Abstract: The usages of the past, and of antiquity, were felt throughout history, reflecting the fabric of apologetic and ideological narratives. Antiquity is studied to understand time to understand the way in which the past is received, integrated, and used. This work gathers seven essays featuring case studies on ancient cultural identity via interdisciplinary approaches. Interdisciplinarity, thanks to the intersection of history, archaeology, and linguistics, corresponds to the transversal, comprehensive, and complex look essential to understand the intrinsic value of antiquity in each time and in each present. Ancient history and archaeology demonstrate how diverse the ancient world truly was. Socio-cultural change and dynamics in contact situations between groups of distinct cultures produced constant innovations and adaptations. In this book, the reader will access debates on intercultural experiences from the perspective of Phoenician colonists in Spain; the formation of a particular Greek identity built by Greek colonists in Sicily; the dramatic social and cultural transformations in the southern Levant following the regional transition to the Bronze Age; the integration of pre-Islamic Somalia in a trade network connected to the Mediterranean, from the Bronze to Iron ages; the multicultural influences inspiring the Book of Genesis; the cultural identity of early Christians as the New Testament is developed under the influence of Near Eastern traditions; and the complex multi-cultural and multi-ethnic dialogue behind the process of formation of Koine Greek during Byzantine times.

    Keywords: Medical genetics
Abstract: Mutations in the BRCA1/2 genes are the most common cause of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC), and HBOC is an autosomal dominant cancer predisposition syndrome. Individuals with HBOC have a high risk for breast and ovarian cancers and a moderate risk for other cancers, such as prostate, pancreatic, melanoma, and fallopian tube cancers. The goal of screening individuals at high risk of familial cancer is either prevention (such as a change in lifestyle or diet) or early detection of cancer. The identification of BRCA mutation carriers is important, since increased surveillance, drug therapy, and prophylactic surgery can reduce cancer-related morbidity and mortality. In recent years, there has been substantial development in BRCA-associated hereditary breast and/or breast-ovarian cancer research and its clinical applications. In this context, this book consolidates the recent advances in BRCA-related cancer biology and therapeutics, covering a wide spectrum of interrelated topics. Chapters cover a wide range of topics, such as BRCA discovery, BRCA structure and function, BRCA-associated cancers, BRCA genetic testing and counselling, and more. This book is a valuable resource not only for medical and allied health students but also for researchers, clinical and nurse geneticists, genetic counselors, and physician assistants

Abstract: In many parts of the world, the use of antibiotics in food-producing animals is partially or completely banned. This has led to increased research to develop alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs). Some of these alternatives include prebiotics, probiotics, and phytoadditives. This book focuses on probiotics, which are the most feasible option to replace AGPs because they directly modulate the gut microbiota and improve gut absorption, which ultimately accelerates growth and production. The book provides recent updates on the use of probiotics in farm animals including poultry, fish, and ruminants as well as pet animals

Abstract: Panic disorder is often confused with elevations of anxiety and what is often described as “anxiety attacks.” However, panic is qualitatively different from these phenomena. Panic disorders or panic attacks are intense and usually brief episodes that have often come upon the sufferer as an extreme dread and fear of annihilation. Panic attacks are startling and often produce a sense of impending doom and fear of imminent disaster. They are associated with heart palpitations, dizziness, tingling of extremities, disorientation, and the urge to flee the present environment. During a panic attack, it is not unusual for the sufferer to act in ways that seem completely irrational and beyond the realm of sanity. Imagine sitting quietly in a darkened room and being intensely engrossed in a book that you cannot put down. Suddenly you feel someone’s hands grasp your neck and begin choking you. That level of startled and life-threatening fear is like what many report during a panic attack. It is difficult to know what causes this disorder. In many cases, sufferers report having endured traumatic experiences, especially in childhood. However, in an equal percentage of cases, there is no prior trauma history, and the origins of the panic disorder are unknown, although they do tend to run in families. This book elucidates the nature of panic, the factors that contribute to the disorder, and describes psychological, physiological, and medical interventions that have been useful in ameliorating the suffering brought on by panic attacks

Abstract: Human activities cause the degradation of innumerable ecosystems, including forests. The degradation of forests leads to far-reaching nutrient cycle changes throughout all environments. Reversible or irreversible degradation processes cause declines in an ecosystem’s ability to self-regulate. Reversible processes decrease native forest biodiversity while preserving the ecosystem’s abiotic components, whereas irreversible processes alter the character of the potential natural vegetation. This book discusses forest degradation in three sections on general, climatic, and land-use degradative effects

Abstract: In recent decades, artificial porous structures have attracted increasing enthusiasm from researchers inspired by the fascinating molecular pores in nature and their unique biological functions. Although substantial achievements in porous materials have been realized, the construction of topologically designed pores is still challenging. Recently, the emergence of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), which are constructed based on organic and polymer chemistry, has made it possible to design artificial pores with controlled pore size, topology and interface properties. COFs are crystalline porous materials constructed by the precise reticulation of organic building blocks via dynamic covalent bonds. Distinct from non-covalent interactions which tend to produce isostructures, covalent bonds enable accurate pore design owing to their predetermined reaction pathways. In addition, the appropriate polycondensation of organic building units enables the formation of extended two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) polymer architectures with periodically ordered skeletons and well-defined pores. With their large surface area, tailorable structures, and tunable chemistry, COFs are regarded as potentially superior candidates for various applications including catalysis, energy storage and conversion, mass transport and biotechnology. This book examines the historic achievement of COFs, providing clear and comprehensive guidance for researchers on their structural design, synthetic protocols and functional exploration

Abstract: In mathematics and science, a nonlinear system is a system in which the change of the output is not proportional to the change of input. Nonlinear control systems, which are among the new technologies most widely used in many fields such as economic management, industrial production, technology research and development, ecological prevention and control, are at the core of worldwide automation control technology. In contrast to linear control systems, the nonlinear control system has the characteristics of a data model: stability, zero-input system response, self-excited oscillation or limit cycle, and a more complex structure, increasing the difficulty of its theoretical analysis and technical development. Nonlinear systems are common phenomena in real life and as such cannot be ignored. Analysis and research of nonlinear systems are therefore important, and researchers need to clarify their characteristics, explore scientific and effective application measures, and finally enhance their control quality. This book comprehensively investigates the main principles, core mechanisms, typical problems, and relevant solutions involved in nonlinear systems. In general, this book aims to provide advanced research on nonlinear systems and control schemes for researchers and engineers working in related fields, and thus promote future study in this research area

Abstract: Skin wounds are common occurrences that result from the breakdown of anatomical continuity and integrity of the epidermis, with consequent functional changes. Wound healing is a complex phenomenon through which there is healing of the skin. The wound healing process begins immediately after the wound occurs and can be a lengthy and complex process depending on the severity of the wound and the normal or abnormal healing progress. Wound healing progress through three distinct phases of inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling in a methodical and complex sequence that involves cellular, molecular, and humoral mechanisms of action. Any change in this sequence of events can lead to abnormal wound healing. Due to the health and psychological consequences of wounds that are difficult to heal there has been a continuous effort to develop new therapies that promote wound healing more quickly and effectively and that restore the skin’s barrier function. Nevertheless, this situation remains a medical challenge. This book presents some therapeutic advances based on new and innovative therapeutic options, medical devices, and biomaterials to promote wound healing. It is a theoretical and practical reference for future research on chronic wound healing

    Keywords: Distributed systems
Abstract: Over the years, computing has moved from centralized location-based computing to distributed cloud computing. Because of cloud computing’s security, regulatory, and latency issues, it was necessary to move all computation processes to the edge of the network (edge computing). However, at the edge, traditional computing devices no longer exist on their own. They have been joined by millions of mobile, Internet of Things (IoT), and smart devices, all needing computation. Therefore, edge computing infrastructure is necessary for multiple devices at the edge of the network. This book explores various technologies that make edge computing possible and how to manage computing at the edge and integrate it with existing networks and 5G networks of the future. It investigates the current state-of-the-art infrastructure and architecture and highlights advances and future trends. Security and privacy become a concern when you compute at the edge because the data needs to travel across various network nodes and user devices at the edge. As such, this book also discusses the management of security, privacy, and other network issues

Abstract: The sections and chapters contained in this book deal with issues and challenges facing indigenous and minority populations located in several geographical areas of the world. The papers are written by writers and scholars from various parts of the world and, like any piece of literature on indigenous and minority populations, the topics are diverse. The perspectives are both interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary. The issues examined in the various chapters cover areas pertaining to their human rights, preservation of their culture and identity, traditional knowledge, and their challenges, but also scholarly and epistemological approaches to understanding and articulating such topics in academic contexts. Indeed, the issues around indigenous and minority populations across the world transcend their human rights concerns in relation to dominant groups and institutions within the territorial boundaries of the modern states where they currently live. These issues are cultural, anthropological, sociological, philosophical and epistemological, as well as historical. Any scholarly piece of work on indigenous and minority populations is therefore inevitably inter-disciplinary, multi-disciplinary or both. The various topics examined by the authors epitomize this diversity of issues around such populations. The book is a significant source of information for students, academics, practitioners, policymakers, government officials and non-governmental organisations working on issues that pertain to such populations at national, regional and global levels

Abstract: The objective of spatial analysis techniques is to describe the patterns existing in spatial data and to establish, preferably quantitatively, the relationships between different geographic variables. The notion of spatial analysis in a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) environment encompasses the idea of integrating spatial data and alphanumeric attributes and translating it into a series of functions related to selection and data search, on the one hand, and with modeling, on the other. There have been substantial advances in spatial analysis techniques in GIS, mainly in the form of more faithfully apprehending the relationships inherent to the geographic phenomenon, something that was proven impossible to do with non-spatial techniques. Nowadays, spatial analysis involves a set of techniques used to analyze and model variables with distribution in space and/or time. The new era of spatial analysis must also consider the possibilities of integrating artificial intelligence in simulation (geosimulation) processes in computerized environments (geocomputation) in close relationship with models developed in real situations. GIS have emerged as useful tools in geographic modeling processes, helping to answer questions about the time variability of the landscape structure, study the behavior of fire, predict areas of urban expansion, analyze propagation phenomena, model animal movement and behavior, and determine periods and areas of high risk of flooding, among other phenomena. GIS and Spatial Analysis is a critical book that provides different methodologies that combine the potential data (including Big Data) analysis with GIS applications. It gives readers a comprehensive overview of the current state-of-the-art methods of spatial analysis, focusing both on the new philosophical and theoretical foundations for spatial analysis and on a flexible framework for analysis in the real world, for problems such as complexity and uncertainty

Abstract: Oxidative stress is a major contributor to the etiology of chronic disorders like cancer, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases, and cardiovascular diseases. Long-term exposure to elevated levels of pro-oxidant substances can lead to structural damage in mitochondrial DNA as well as functional changes in a number of enzymes and cellular components, which can lead to abnormalities in gene expression. Modern lifestyles, which include eating processed food, exposure to a variety of chemicals, and not exercising, are significant factors in the development of oxidative stress. However, the ability of medicinal plants with antioxidant capabilities to cure or prevent a number of human illnesses in which oxidative stress appears to be a contributing factor has been demonstrated. A growing body of research links free radicals to the etiology of many diseases, supporting the use of antioxidants as a promising therapeutic strategy for the management of pathologies caused by free radicals. Despite these remarkable advances, there is still much to learn about the relationship between free radicals and antioxidants. Understanding the principles behind pathological and physiological disorders caused by free radicals is crucial. Importance of Oxidative Stress and Antioxidant System in Health and Disease contributes to understanding the fundamental principles of oxidative stress and the effects of antioxidants on disease and health

    Keywords: Psychotherapy
Abstract: Psychoanalysis is facing a severe crisis. Contemporary epistemology relies on an extreme materialistic reductionism and human sciences seem eager to conform as much as possible to the models and procedures of hardcore science and somatic medicine. Western society is currently harboring a deep mistrust for a discipline that fully incorporates the flesh and blood of interpersonal emotions. The standing of psychoanalysis as a basic dimension of human culture is threatened more than ever and psychoanalysis is badly in need of new strategies and new models. Unluckily, and - I must add - quite dismayingly, psychoanalytic institutions have generally appeared shy, even helpless in front of such an impressive army of critics and opponents. Nowadays, psychoanalysis appears weak. We may even qualify it as wounded. The development of the interpersonal model and of the Kleinian school in the second half of the last century has set the stage for the emergence of an original conceptualization of the unconscious mind. Within the intersubjective paradigm, the psychoanalytic situation is conceptualized as an interpersonal field to which both the analyst and the patient substantially contribute. We believe that the failure to fully integrate such an intersubjective dimension in both psychoanalytic theory and practice amounts to a core liability in 21st-century psychoanalysis. This book gathers several contributions discussing the contemporary crises of psychoanalysis and offering new perspectives. Some contributors lament that the prevailing psychoanalytic theory and clinical practice have been unable to stay true to the fundamentals of the discipline. Other chapters explore the intersections between psychoanalysis and neural sciences. Finally, the last section demonstrates how psychoanalysis can still be fruitfully applied to the understanding of contemporary culture and society, including basic issues such as identity politics and climate change

Abstract: The presence of flavonoids such as chalcones, flavones, flavonols, anthocyanins, and proanthocyanidins is ubiquitous throughout the plant kingdom. It was previously believed that the oldest plants that produced flavonoids were liverworts and mosses. However, recent discoveries have found genes encoding enzymes in the shikimate pathway responsible for flavonoid biosynthesis in a variety of plants including algae, liverworts, mosses, lycophytes, ferns and horsetails, gymnosperms, and angiosperms. These genes include the first two enzymes for flavonoid biosynthesis, chalcone synthase and chalcone isomerase. Furthermore, recent research has found flavones, isoflavones, and flavonols in microalgae from five distinct evolutionary lineages(Cyanobacteria, Rhodophyta, Chlorophyta, Haptophyta, and Ochrophyta) using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. This implies that plants may have developed the capacity to make flavonoids earlier than previously believed. Flavonoids in the earliest plants that produced them were believed to have acted as protection against UV radiation and control of plant hormone activity. As plants evolved, these roles diversified, and the study of flavonoids has revealed how plants developed the capacity to produce a wide array of specialized metabolites and then evolved the metabolic pathways required to manufacture them. This book delves into the structural diversity of flavonoids found throughout the plant kingdom, the evolution of flavonoid biosynthesis genes in plants, and the molecular interaction of flavonoids with growth hormones. The metabolic routes of flavonoids are thoroughly investigated using both biochemical and molecular biology methods, and the book elucidates the links between genes/proteins and metabolites, as well as between metabolites. The book also explores the interplay between flavonoid metabolism and external environmental factors that are subject to continuous change

Abstract: Pulmonary lobectomy is one of the most performed thoracic surgery procedures worldwide. These special operations, which have a higher risk of mortality and morbidity compared to many surgical interventions, are only possible with sufficient theoretical knowledge and experience. Anatomical lung resections, which started with mass ligation of the pulmonary hilum in the 1800s, have become specialized operations that mostly use minimally invasive methods and require individual dissection of hilar structures. However, to date, there has only been a limited number of textbooks on these complex procedures. This book, which discusses the principles of pulmonary lobectomy, was written by experts in the field of thoracic surgery and other subspecialties. Surgical anatomy, VATS lobectomy, RATS lobectomy and intensive care follow-up are discussed in detail. The textbook should be useful for surgery residents and thoracic surgeons seeking to improve their understanding and skills in pulmonary lobectomy

Abstract: The role of a leader has changed drastically since scholars began theorizing about the modern leader. Contemporary society has and is continuing to evolve. Existing leadership theories need to adapt to be relevant to the expectations of leaders now. That is, new leadership theories emerge in their place. This book presents new ideas in leadership in the 21st-century context as well as new models that explain how individuals enact good leadership. This book serves as an opportunity to critique or defend current understandings of leadership and propose new evidence-based and theory-driven insights into leadership. Leadership is understood as more complex than an individual influencing another. Within the broad domains of leadership, there are leaders, followers, leadership processes, followership processes, teams, dyads, relationships, and context. Each of these is critical in defining what it is to be a good leader in increasingly complex professional and personal environments. This book will encourage authors to make compelling arguments not for how leadership is and has been but rather for how good leadership should be

Abstract: Participation in fitness and sports activities bestows far-reaching benefits on children’s growth, physical and mental development, health, skill acquisition, and physical performance. Besides the typical description of common concepts, subjects, and general literature, this book presents a variety of topics associated with physical activity and fitness among children and youth. Work presented in this book ranges from complex descriptions of the role of vitamin D deficiency on children’s physical activity and lifelong health to the analyses of the role of motor proficiency among children with an autism spectrum disorder. Some authors report on the association between physical activity and fitness and cognitive function among children while others describe noted differences in selected physical fitness components among children over a span of 30 years. The book also provides empirical insights into the role and status of school sports. While the feasibility and benefits of designed programmes and organized school activities have been demonstrated, the need for targeted specialized interventions and additional knowledge underpins the need for multidisciplinary and inter-sectoral approaches when working with children

Abstract: Volcanic geology is a rapidly growing research field within earth sciences. It is a research field that provides the fundamental basic data to be able to reconstruct volcanism that generated eruptive products and the sedimentary processes acted upon to redeposit and rework volcanic pyroclasts. Due to the broad time and spatial scales over which volcanism takes place, it is difficult to determine the correct link between the preserved rocks and the type of volcanism responsible for their formation. Volcanic rocks represent geological processes that occur in a distinct and rapid pattern compared to other geological processes. This book provides insight into the problem of determining the scale of volcanism and linking it to the volcanic rock record. It includes comprehensive reviews and case studies representative of volcanism in diverse geological environments. This book provides a broad overview of the problems, complexity, and usefulness of the active volcanism-based volcanic geology approach to interpreting volcanic rocks in the geological record

Abstract: Corrosion refers to the gradual degradation of materials. It occurs in both ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Rust, erosion, wear, galling, swelling, cracking, splitting, and decaying are known forms of degradation. A refined metal undergoes natural corrosion, which changes it into a more stable oxide. By reacting chemically or electrochemically with their surroundings, materials (often metals) slowly deteriorate. The discipline of corrosion engineering is focused on managing and avoiding corrosion. Some metals develop a natural corrosion resistance property known as passivity. This happens when the metal reacts with the oxygen in the air or corrodes in it. The ultimate result is a thin oxide sheet that prevents the metal from continuing to react. In general, corrosion is a process that turns refined metals into more stable substances like metal oxides, metal sulfides, or metal hydroxides. Similar to this, when iron rusts, oxygen and moisture in the air cause the development of iron oxides. According to the science of corrosion, metals transform into considerably more stable chemical compounds like oxides, sulfides, and hydroxides throughout this spontaneous and irreversible process. The book presents research on the basic and advanced aspects of corrosion

    Keywords: Waste management
Abstract: Recycling is an act of collecting and processing items that would otherwise be discarded as waste in order to create a new product. Recycled material is being used in an increasing number of today’s products. Waste management is primarily concerned with a wide range of wastes, including industrial, biological, household, municipal, organic, biomedical, and radioactive wastes. Human activity, such as the mining and processing of basic resources, generates waste and poses health problems that can emerge both indirectly and directly. Waste mismanagement is a serious problem on an individual and a governmental level. Nowadays, the waste disposal business is struggling to adapt to globalized consumerism, a system in which things are manufactured on one continent, purchased and used on another, and disposed of on yet another. Therefore, remediation is often subject to a variety of legal criteria, but it can also be based on evaluations of human health and environmental concerns in cases where no statutory standards exist or when standards are advisory. This book discusses recycling strategies and technologies to find solutions to waste management. Chapters address such topics as biodegradable waste, the circular economy, managing industrial and nuclear waste, and much more
