Abstract: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by hepatic steatosis that develops in the absence of competing for liver disease etiologies such as alcohol consumption, monogenic hereditary conditions, or iatrogenic causes. The pathogenesis of NAFLD is multifactorial and its understanding is still incomplete. Although knowledge of the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying disease development and progression has grown significantly in recent years, the exact contribution of environmental and genetic factors as well as that of extrahepatic and intrahepatic events in determining the disease phenotype remains ill defined. This book discusses topics highly correlated with NAFLD such as the regulation of iron metabolism, the role of the enzyme heparanase in liver steatosis, transcriptional regulation by ERR and its role in pathogenesis, hepatic lipid homeostasis, therapeutic approaches to NAFLD, and pathogenesis and significance of HDL as a molecular modifier in NAFLD

    Keywords: Food security & supply
Abstract: In a totally globalized world with a population estimated to reach 10 billion by the year 2100, according to the United Nations, food security and food safety are two of the main challenges facing humanity. Foodborne pathogens continue to cause many cases of infection in humans worldwide each year. Global trade today results in food produced in a specific region or industry being distributed globally, which can lead to a food-poisoning outbreak affecting people in different countries. The increase in antimicrobial resistance and the emergence of multidrug-resistant bacterial strains is another cause for concern. Detection and control of pathogens are therefore essential to prevent the occurrence of food-poisoning outbreaks and to reduce the prevalence of pathogens along the food production chain. Throughout the chapters of this book, the reader will have an overview of the main food pathogens and the problems they cause, as well as the main control measures and techniques for their rapid detection

Abstract: Recent Updates in Eating Disorders raises recent relevant issues about eating disorders and obesity that have led us to speak of an ‘eating disorder society’, especially among adolescents who are at the most vulnerable stage of life. It is important not only to be aware of the behaviours that occur before the emergence of an eating disorder, but also, from a clinical perspective, to talk about diagnostic criteria. It is also important to specify, as accurately as possible, the severity criteria and the presence of comorbidity, in order to establish better protocols for therapeutic action. We also address the issue of social media networks and their influence on the development of eating disorders (and many other problems). While this work is neither exhaustive nor extensive, we nevertheless hope it will be of interest and will open up further lines of study and research in the near future

Abstract: With around 3,500 species identified so far, mosquitoes can be found in virtually every environment and continent around the globe. Blood-feeding biters (e.g., Anopheles, Culex, Aedes, Ochlerotatus, and Mansonia) are among the most influential vectors for harboring and transmitting mosquito-borne diseases (MBDs) such as Zika, Japanese encephalitis, West Nile fever, dengue fever, yellow fever, and malaria, among other diseases. More than 700 million human infections and 725,000 deaths occur every year. Mosquitoes are increasing in number worldwide, yet there are still no effective vaccines or prevention strategies. Thus, traditional vector control strategies remain the most common ways to combat these diseases. Despite this, MBDs linger as one of the major challenges for public health and vector control programs at both global and local levels. This book provides a comprehensive overview of MBDs and vector control strategies

Abstract: Trust has always been complicated. This book works to examine aspects and theories of trust. Chapters look at trust in the workplace. It considers types of leadership and how that influences the trust of employees. As workplaces and societies become more diverse, there can be an impact on trust. Many times, individuals will have implicit biases that can influence their perception of others and their ability to trust. Trust has also become more complicated with the advent of the internet. We can now connect with more ideas and individuals. Yet, is the person who communicates back with us real? Is it someone with a fake account or maybe not even a person at all, but a robot? Even though trust is complicated and we can sometimes be taken advantage of, we still need to find ways to trust others in our lives. Trust allows us to develop a community. We have always needed the community to be safe, both physically and emotionally. This book allows you to connect with new ideas and aspects of trust

Abstract: Traditionally, high-performance communication systems were based on rectangular waveguides (RWGs) to guide high-frequency signals. Newer, efficient RWG-like systems are now available with the added value of low cost, low volume and low weight, together with compactness and ease of manufacture. These systems are based on substrate-integrated waveguides (SIWs), empty SIW (ESIW) and their multiple variations. This book presents successful examples of the use of these systems and the advances in their manufacture, as well as newer techniques that combine 3D metal/plastic printers with the most common planar procedures. The result is a variety of waveguide topologies, applications and manufacturing procedures that may have a strong influence on the design of communication devices and systems

Abstract: Due to the world’s increasing population, the demand for food is rapidly growing. There is a real concern that we are headed toward a food crisis. Land for farming is dwindling, leading to the need to develop alternative production methods. One of the most promising is soilless agriculture, which refers to growing crops, particularly horticultural crops, in different growing media or in substrates other than soil (substrate culture) or in aerated nutrient solutions (water culture). The primary advantage of soilless agriculture is that it is independent of the negative effects of climate change and chemical pollution (temperature and soil intensity variations, drought, salinity, soil degradation, low biodiversity, toxicity, and diseases). This book presents up-to-date information on soilless culture types, how to manage plant nutrition, fertilizer use, organic cultivation, plant diseases and plant protection in soilless agriculture, the use of smart agricultural tools, the evaluation of carbon and water footprint, and the economic aspects of soilless agriculture

Abstract: Human activities cause the degradation of innumerable ecosystems, including forests. The degradation of forests leads to far-reaching nutrient cycle changes throughout all environments. Reversible or irreversible degradation processes cause declines in an ecosystem’s ability to self-regulate. Reversible processes decrease native forest biodiversity while preserving the ecosystem’s abiotic components, whereas irreversible processes alter the character of the potential natural vegetation. This book discusses forest degradation in three sections on general, climatic, and land-use degradative effects

Abstract: Panic disorder is often confused with elevations of anxiety and what is often described as “anxiety attacks.” However, panic is qualitatively different from these phenomena. Panic disorders or panic attacks are intense and usually brief episodes that have often come upon the sufferer as an extreme dread and fear of annihilation. Panic attacks are startling and often produce a sense of impending doom and fear of imminent disaster. They are associated with heart palpitations, dizziness, tingling of extremities, disorientation, and the urge to flee the present environment. During a panic attack, it is not unusual for the sufferer to act in ways that seem completely irrational and beyond the realm of sanity. Imagine sitting quietly in a darkened room and being intensely engrossed in a book that you cannot put down. Suddenly you feel someone’s hands grasp your neck and begin choking you. That level of startled and life-threatening fear is like what many report during a panic attack. It is difficult to know what causes this disorder. In many cases, sufferers report having endured traumatic experiences, especially in childhood. However, in an equal percentage of cases, there is no prior trauma history, and the origins of the panic disorder are unknown, although they do tend to run in families. This book elucidates the nature of panic, the factors that contribute to the disorder, and describes psychological, physiological, and medical interventions that have been useful in ameliorating the suffering brought on by panic attacks

Abstract: Patients with schizophrenia need a personalized medicine approach where the pharmacological and neurological mechanism is understood from the perspective of the patient’s own experience and symptoms. Even though genetics play a role in the etiology, there are other important contributing risk factors. Schizophrenia is not a single-disease entity but has overlapping neurobiological and clinical profiles with other disorders such as autism and stress-related disorder. This expanded conceptualization benefits not only scholars but also diagnosing clinicians, as the diagnosis of schizophrenia is not always straightforward. The authors of this book discuss neurochemistry, animal models and antipsychotic models of schizophrenia to arrive at a personalized medicine approach for patients with schizophrenia. New treatment prospects from pharmacogenetic and neurotechnology research bring hope to clinicians and patients alike that, with continuing scientific studies, precisely targeted care is becoming available, with the potential of further alleviating the symptoms. Music therapy and patient-centered nursing practice are important aspects of clinical care as new directions are explored. This book will benefit researchers, clinicians, patients and family members needing a compact state-of-the-art reference resource. Knowledge is not only empowering but consoling, as our collective efforts to advance our understanding will translate into better treatment outcomes and the promise of a freer life for the patient

Abstract: In mathematics and science, a nonlinear system is a system in which the change of the output is not proportional to the change of input. Nonlinear control systems, which are among the new technologies most widely used in many fields such as economic management, industrial production, technology research and development, ecological prevention and control, are at the core of worldwide automation control technology. In contrast to linear control systems, the nonlinear control system has the characteristics of a data model: stability, zero-input system response, self-excited oscillation or limit cycle, and a more complex structure, increasing the difficulty of its theoretical analysis and technical development. Nonlinear systems are common phenomena in real life and as such cannot be ignored. Analysis and research of nonlinear systems are therefore important, and researchers need to clarify their characteristics, explore scientific and effective application measures, and finally enhance their control quality. This book comprehensively investigates the main principles, core mechanisms, typical problems, and relevant solutions involved in nonlinear systems. In general, this book aims to provide advanced research on nonlinear systems and control schemes for researchers and engineers working in related fields, and thus promote future study in this research area

Abstract: Aridity is the imbalance between long-term average water supply and long-term average water demand. Arid environments cover more than one-third of the world’s land area and represent the most common habitat on Earth after the oceans. Aridity poses a threat to the environment and the economy, and to security, development, food security, and social life around the world. The causes of increased aridity are complex and are thought to be both natural and man-made. The causes of drought include such factors as climate change, population growth, soil erosion, inappropriate irrigation, poor farming methods, soil, water, and groundwater contamination, urbanization, deforestation, improper water management, and desertification of arid and semi-arid zones. This book contains valuable scientific studies on such aspects of aridity as surface and groundwater management, land use, and agricultural applications. Case studies from different geographies and planets are included

Abstract: Biomimetics is an innovative form of technology that emulates, imitates, or mimics nature in order to improve human lives by creating desirable solutions. It is the study of nature and natural phenomena in an attempt to understand its laws, principles, and underlying mechanisms, to obtain ideas from nature, and to apply concepts that may benefit science, engineering, pharmacy, dentistry, and medicine. Smart/intelligent biomaterials for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine are fine examples of biomimetics. Yet, biomimicry can go above and beyond the simplistic inspiration and use of natural properties as the basis for the innovation of new products. It bridges the gap between the lab and the industry via the intra-disciplinary design and formulation of functional solutions combining knowledge, methods, techniques, and advances in the fields of chemistry, biology, architecture, engineering, medicine, pharmaceutics, dentistry, and biomedical engineering. Three-dimensional printing, self-healing nanocoatings, hydrogels, bio-mechanical carbon nanotubes, stimuli-sensitive and -responsive cell/drug delivery systems, and robotics are some of the topics covered in this book. In a simplified style, the book provides interested readers with a practical reference approaching biomimetics and biomimicry from a realistic and translational perspective, discussing problems and offering solutions and including studies ranging from basics to the clinic to scale-up and industrial or go-to-market obstacles. Through Biomimetics - Bridging the Gap, you’ll quickly discover that biomimicry is more than just looking at a silkworm (silk is one of the first examples in history) or at the shape of a flower, a damselfly, or even a humpback whale and becoming re-inspired. Biomimicry is an intra-/multi-disciplinary methodology and technological-oriented approach presently employed by the most innovative organizations on this planet

Abstract: Mutations in the BRCA1/2 genes are the most common cause of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC), and HBOC is an autosomal dominant cancer predisposition syndrome. Individuals with HBOC have a high risk for breast and ovarian cancers and a moderate risk for other cancers, such as prostate, pancreatic, melanoma, and fallopian tube cancers. The goal of screening individuals at high risk of familial cancer is either prevention (such as a change in lifestyle or diet) or early detection of cancer. The identification of BRCA mutation carriers is important, since increased surveillance, drug therapy, and prophylactic surgery can reduce cancer-related morbidity and mortality. In recent years, there has been substantial development in BRCA-associated hereditary breast and/or breast-ovarian cancer research and its clinical applications. In this context, this book consolidates the recent advances in BRCA-related cancer biology and therapeutics, covering a wide spectrum of interrelated topics. Chapters cover a wide range of topics, such as BRCA discovery, BRCA structure and function, BRCA-associated cancers, BRCA genetic testing and counselling, and more. This book is a valuable resource not only for medical and allied health students but also for researchers, clinical and nurse geneticists, genetic counselors, and physician assistants

Abstract: In many parts of the world, the use of antibiotics in food-producing animals is partially or completely banned. This has led to increased research to develop alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs). Some of these alternatives include prebiotics, probiotics, and phytoadditives. This book focuses on probiotics, which are the most feasible option to replace AGPs because they directly modulate the gut microbiota and improve gut absorption, which ultimately accelerates growth and production. The book provides recent updates on the use of probiotics in farm animals including poultry, fish, and ruminants as well as pet animals

Abstract: In recent decades, artificial porous structures have attracted increasing enthusiasm from researchers inspired by the fascinating molecular pores in nature and their unique biological functions. Although substantial achievements in porous materials have been realized, the construction of topologically designed pores is still challenging. Recently, the emergence of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), which are constructed based on organic and polymer chemistry, has made it possible to design artificial pores with controlled pore size, topology and interface properties. COFs are crystalline porous materials constructed by the precise reticulation of organic building blocks via dynamic covalent bonds. Distinct from non-covalent interactions which tend to produce isostructures, covalent bonds enable accurate pore design owing to their predetermined reaction pathways. In addition, the appropriate polycondensation of organic building units enables the formation of extended two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) polymer architectures with periodically ordered skeletons and well-defined pores. With their large surface area, tailorable structures, and tunable chemistry, COFs are regarded as potentially superior candidates for various applications including catalysis, energy storage and conversion, mass transport and biotechnology. This book examines the historic achievement of COFs, providing clear and comprehensive guidance for researchers on their structural design, synthetic protocols and functional exploration

Abstract: Squamous cell carcinoma remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. It is a heterogeneous disease with complex molecular abnormalities. Head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) represent the most frequent human solid tumors and are a major cause of cancer mortality. Highly heterogeneous tumors arise from closely interconnected epithelial cell populations whose intrinsic self-renewal potential is inversely related to the stratified differentiation program. Cancer prevention strategies are theoretically appealing although often difficult to implement, owing to the multifactorial pathogenesis of most cancers. This book focuses on significant variations of squamous cell carcinoma, including squamous cell carcinoma of the vagina, bladder, head and neck

Abstract: Symbiosis is a vital and enduring interaction between two species in nature, benefiting both organisms involved. Mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism are the three main types of symbiotic relationships. Mutualism benefits both species, commensalism benefits one species while leaving the other unaffected, and parasitism benefits one species at the expense of the other. These interactions play a crucial role in maintaining ecosystem stability and functionality. Symbiosis relies on a close genetic, physiological, and morphological connection between the participating species. Numerous examples demonstrate the significance of symbiosis in nature. Nitrogen-fixing bacteria, for instance, convert atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia, which plants can utilize as a nutrient. This process reduces the reliance on chemical fertilizers. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi enhance nutrient and water absorption in plants, while certain bacteria in the soil improve nutrient availability, plant development, and photosynthesis. These instances highlight the diverse ways in which symbiosis supports the well-being of different species. This book thoroughly explores various aspects of symbiosis in nature, delving into topics such as signaling, its importance in agriculture, and its role in mitigating abiotic stresses. It also provides a comprehensive exploration of various aspects related to symbiosis in nature, offering readers a valuable opportunity to enhance their understanding of this subject. By offering valuable insights, the book sheds light on the beneficial relationships that exist between different species. Overall, symbiosis is an integral mechanism that promotes the interdependence and cooperation of species in nature. Understanding the complexities and benefits of symbiotic relationships is essential for comprehending and preserving the delicate balance within ecosystems

Abstract: Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has received a lot of attention due to its inexpensive cost, benign nature, and great photocatalytic potential. TiO2 has numerous applications, including in photocatalysts, Li-ion batteries, solar cells, and medical research. However, its performance is unsatisfactory due to a variety of issues, including a wide band gap (3.01 to 3.2 eV) and quick electron–hole pair recombination (1012 to 1011 s). Many efforts have been made to improve the qualities of TiO2, such as structural and dopant changes, which expand its applications. This book focuses on the properties of TiO2-modified nanoparticles, including their synthesis, alterations, and applications

Some authors report on the association between physical activity and fitness and cognitive function among children while others describe noted differences in selected physical fitness components among children over a span of 30 years. The book also provides empirical insights into the role and status of school sports. While the feasibility and benefits of designed programmes and organized school activities have been demonstrated, the need for targeted specialized interventions and additional knowledge underpins the need for multidisciplinary and inter-sectoral approaches when working with children

Abstract: The first roundworm identified in humans was Ascaris, described by Linnaeus in 1758. Rudolphi’s 1808 classification was the first to describe the Nematoidea. With the development of new molecular techniques, classification and phylogenetic research have also frequently changed; in 2019 a new classification, the phylum Nematoda, was created based on evolutionary relationships, developmental and morphological features and recent molecular evidence. Nematodes, which include hookworms, whipworms, threadworms, and soil-borne worms, are one of the oldest disease-causing creatures, dating back to Ancient Greek, Roman and Mesopotamian civilizations. Most commonly affecting children and women, the disease causes developmental disorders, cognitive impairment and death, with symptoms primarily affecting the organs they inhabit. In this book, the historical background, biology, transmission routes and geographical distribution of some roundworms affecting human health are discussed

Abstract: As a fundamental aspect of science and technology, the electromagnetic field has infiltrated most human activities. This book reviews recent achievements in electromagnetic field theory, in the scientific research driven by the electromagnetic field, and in the application of the electromagnetic field in advanced technology. Theoretical aspects of the electromagnetic field are examined in detail and new interpretations of the basic interactions related to magnetic fields are proposed. Among the scientific research topics reviewed, new understandings are achieved of long-distance wireless power transfer, nerve impulses, and electromagnetic diagnosis mechanisms. A new concept of the electric field at the verge of discharge is applied to the electric fields produced by any distribution or structure of electric charges in clouds. The detailed relationship between materials and microwave electromagnetic fields is described in order to achieve fine control of the chemical reaction field in materials under microwave irradiation. Electromagnetic power consumption in microelectronic devices is carefully analysed, enabling power saving in CMOS/FinFET circuits. The effective use of 2D materials in newly developed electronic, electromagnetic resistive switching devices is investigated

Abstract: The role of a leader has changed drastically since scholars began theorizing about the modern leader. Contemporary society has and is continuing to evolve. Existing leadership theories need to adapt to be relevant to the expectations of leaders now. That is, new leadership theories emerge in their place. This book presents new ideas in leadership in the 21st-century context as well as new models that explain how individuals enact good leadership. This book serves as an opportunity to critique or defend current understandings of leadership and propose new evidence-based and theory-driven insights into leadership. Leadership is understood as more complex than an individual influencing another. Within the broad domains of leadership, there are leaders, followers, leadership processes, followership processes, teams, dyads, relationships, and context. Each of these is critical in defining what it is to be a good leader in increasingly complex professional and personal environments. This book will encourage authors to make compelling arguments not for how leadership is and has been but rather for how good leadership should be

Abstract: Phytotherapy is attracting increased interest for several reasons. It differs from medical procedures in that it uses the whole herb, although there is often only one component of the plant that works effectively to manage the problem. Plants contain many natural chemicals or phytochemicals that interact with the active ingredient and help prevent any side effects. Medicinal herbs and spices are investigated for their suitability in daily diets for maintaining general wellness or preventing disease. In the past decade, natural health products, dietary supplements, foods with added value, or nutraceuticals have emerged due to the increasing demand for non-pharmaceutical healthcare products. Medical herbs and spices are potential sources for developing new, effective, and safe ingredients to capture a rapidly expanding opportunity in global marketplaces. This book presents up-to-date information on the chemical, pharmacological, and nutritional uses of medicinal herbs and spices in folk medicine, pharmaceuticals, the food industry, veterinary practice, and gastronomy

Abstract: Animal welfare has become a topic of serious discussion worldwide. Humane breeding has become an issue that has been given international attention in recent years. However, many people are still very unfamiliar with this concept. The foundation of humane feeding is based on AW. The main appeal is to allow animals to have five freedoms. When animal feeding meets these conditions, it can be regarded as meeting the basic requirements of humane feeding. The basis for the sustainable implementation of humane breeding is actually consumers. If consumers do not support the concept of humane feeding and do not agree with the price difference that should be paid for the production of humane products, then producers have no resources to put humane concepts into the production process. Therefore, only when consumers pay attention to humane production in terms of consumer behavior, more producers are willing to raise livestock and poultry in a humane way. As long as the insistence of both consumers and producers is satisfied, animals can be treated better

Abstract: Corrosion refers to the gradual degradation of materials. It occurs in both ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Rust, erosion, wear, galling, swelling, cracking, splitting, and decaying are known forms of degradation. A refined metal undergoes natural corrosion, which changes it into a more stable oxide. By reacting chemically or electrochemically with their surroundings, materials (often metals) slowly deteriorate. The discipline of corrosion engineering is focused on managing and avoiding corrosion. Some metals develop a natural corrosion resistance property known as passivity. This happens when the metal reacts with the oxygen in the air or corrodes in it. The ultimate result is a thin oxide sheet that prevents the metal from continuing to react. In general, corrosion is a process that turns refined metals into more stable substances like metal oxides, metal sulfides, or metal hydroxides. Similar to this, when iron rusts, oxygen and moisture in the air cause the development of iron oxides. According to the science of corrosion, metals transform into considerably more stable chemical compounds like oxides, sulfides, and hydroxides throughout this spontaneous and irreversible process. The book presents research on the basic and advanced aspects of corrosion
