    Keywords: Western "classical" music
Abstract: The author achieves a dual purpose in this volume: "To portray the mind of the master, his peculiarly anachronistic culture in an epoch of change," and "to trace Bach's application of venerable philosophies-musical as well as theological-to a musical equipment technically so much in advance of his time." Mr. Chiapusso accordingly explores Bach's Lutheran education, the philosophers and writers available to him, and the influence of scientific thought on his faith and work. He finds that at the dawn of the Enlightenment, when traditional culture was giving way to new ideas, Bach retained an essentially medieval world view, exercising his art "for the glory of God." An understanding of this world view is essential, Mr. Chiapusso demonstrates, to the full appreciation of Bach's music, its spiritual foundations, and its impressive technical innovations. In this context the author goes on to examine such problems as Bach's attitude toward instrumentation, his ornamentation, his use of symbolism, his use of secular music in the church, and his borrowing of ecclesiastical music for secular purposes. A valuable addition to the history of music and ideas

Abstract: A lucid and straightforward analysis that argues that film and literature are not the entirely different, antithetical disciplines they have been and are widely held to be. Mr. Richardson shows clearly the relationship of film to literature, outlining differences as well as similarities, and common goals as well as divergent aims appropriate to the two arts. He demonstrates how each form and its associated criticism is frequently able to illuminate and enliven the other. A film consciousness sharpens the reader's alertness to the visual and aural qualities that mark much great writing, and literary training, in turn, adds depth and perspective to appreciation of film. The author goes on to present some of the literary influences that have affected film during its development, and discusses the impact of film on modern literature. He concludes with an extended exploration of the relationship of film to poetry, suggesting that while the two forms use similar techniques, film has dealt more significantly with the problem of how to find a humane, noncoercive order in life

Abstract: This original and fully documented study finds that the trend in film making in the Western world is to international coproduction. The massive increase of American investment in European film companies, and the continuing search for wider and more lucrative markets are creating a dehumanized, slick style of film that eliminates domestic cultural characteristics and blurs the expression of individual national perceptions. Mr. Guback discusses postwar quota and tariff restrictions erected by European countries to protect their national film industries; the use of the boycott to force a foreign market for American films; the increasing acceptance of European films in the United States; and the United States' backing of the American industry and use of film for propaganda purposes. He shows the intricacies of coproduction and the creation of an industry that is truly international in financing, production, and distribution. Mr. Guback has tapped a reservoir of new sources by personally interviewing film executives on both sides of the Atlantic, and by gaining access to documents heretofore unavailable to researchers. His study provides economists and film buffs with significant new material and interpretation

Abstract: Over a half century after the death of the great Genevese linguist, Ferdinand de Saussure, Mr. Godel provides an external frame of reference for what has been called the "Saussurian School" of Geneva. He presents a succinct biography and bibliography of the leading figures of the School in chronological order according to their date of birth. Except for those linguists no longer alive (de Saussure, Bally, Sechehaye, and Kar- cevski), each author has chosen his own extract. Mr. Godel makes available for the first time de Saussure's notes on Morphology and the text of his last lectures on Linguistic Science. Also included are papers from Manuel Mourelle-Lema, Charles Bally, Albert Sechehaye, Serge Karcevski, Andre Burger, Henri Frei, Robert Godel, Edmond Sollberger, and Felix Kahn. In drawing together this distinguished collection of articles and papers by the foremost representatives of the Geneva circle of linguists, Mr. Godel provides students of linguistics with a valuable source of primary materials

Abstract: Pushkin: Death of a Poet is a careful appraisal of the available facts, casting doubt on many sidely circulated theories concerning Pushkin's death. Sifting the evidence from contemporary letters, diaries, and other sources, the author examines Pushkin's motives: his intense envy of his wife's popularity; his own social discomfort and failure; his humiliating obligation to the Tsar; his growing artistic sterility. He recreates the personalities of the central figures in the story and explores the tangled web of events which preceded the duel and the desperate last-minute efforts by friends of both Pushkin and d'Anthés to prevent their meeting. A vivid account of the duel itself and its tragic aftermath concludes this engrossing study of a perplexing chapter in literary history

Abstract: The career of Constantine P. Pobedonostsev is immensely important to an understanding of what has happened in Russia during the past century. Known to historians as the arch-reactionary of nineteenth-century Russia and the man most responsible for the repressive policies of Tsar Alexander III, Pobedonostsev's influence extended well beyond his own lifetime. A bureaucrat, legal scholar, editor, propagandist, tutor, and advisor to the last two tsars, theologian and powerful religious leader, Pobedonostsev left his imprint on nearly every aspect of Russian life. In the political realm, his savage opposition to moderate reform crushed early efforts at constitutional government, helped prepare the climate for revolution, and profoundly affected the course of history under the Soviets. As a philosopher, he represents the mainstream of Russian intellectual history during the nineteenth century

Abstract: This account of the stormy career of a controversial figure in United States diplomacy draws upon all available sources, including the previously inaccessible Bullitt papers at Yale University. It focuses principally on Bullitt's contribution to Russian-American policy during the WIlson administration and as adviser on Soviet affairs to Franklin Roosevelt. These revealing chapters in recent diplomatic history show how Bullitt's contact with the harsh facts of international politics gradually extinguished his enthusiastic hope for a new world to follow World War I

Abstract: An intimate view of the art and craft of the film is afforded by this anthology of the writings of thirty leading film directors. Ranging from formal essays to informal interviews, the selections provide 'insight into the personalities and purposes of the men behind the cameras and constitute a unique history of the cinema from the early inventions of the Lumière brothers to the current experiments of the "underground" film makers. The selections are international in scope and interest, ranging from an analysis of the techniques of slapstick comedy by the most famous early master of the form (Mack Sennett's "How to Throw a Pie") to the aesthetic of the nouvelle vague film (Alain Resnais's "Trying to Understand My Own Film") and a speculative commentary by the most inventive and celebrated Swedish director (Ingmar Bergman's "What is 'Film Making'?"). The first section of the book is devoted to the views of film pioneers and masters of the silent film with selections from Cecil Hepworth, Edwin S. Porter, Mack Sennett, D. W. Griffith, Robert Flaherty, Charles Chaplin, Erich von Stroheim, Serge Eisenstein, and Carl Dreyer. The second part surveys the opinions of outstanding recent and contemporary directors representing twelve countries: Alfred Hitchcock, Tony Richardson, Jean Cocteau, Alain Resnais, Louis Buñuel, Ingmar Bergman, Federico Fellini, Michelangelo Antonioni, Fritz Lang, Andrzej Wajda, Satyajit Ray, Akira Kurosawa, Orson Welles, and Kenneth Anger. In his introduction Mr. Geduld discusses the ways in which a director imposes his personal vision on a film, the major differences between the film and other artistic media, and the special problems of adapting the novel and other literary forms to the cinema. Included is an index to the contributors presenting biographical data and listing their major films

Abstract: Combining extraordinary learning with grace of style, Robert Briffault provides in this volume the first comprehensive work in English on the heritage of the medieval troubadours, the traveling "reporters" and often the sole entertainers of their age. The lays which these remarkable poets sang, with their intense lyricism and unique treatment of erotic themes-so unlike that found in the literature of Greece or Rome or of barbarian cultures-sprang from the Provencial lands of southern France. Here, in the twelfth century, the popularity of Islamic songs of the neighboring Hispano-Mauresque civilization contributed to the development of a poetry which "answered the mood of a feudal society newly awakened to its native uncouthness by contact with the luxury of the Orient." Briffault clearly establishes that the largely non-Western idiom of the troubadours soon dominated the language of European poetry. His provocative essays on Dante and Shakespeare illuminate the particular impact of the troubadour tradition, so long ignored by literary historians, on Italian and English verse

Abstract: The main events in the history of linguistics from the late eighteenth century to the present are here presented by means of a unique method. The thought and ideas of distinguished linguists are cosidered in biographical accounts by other well-known scholars in the field. Wherever possible, the life of each linguist is discussed by his own pupil, so that a natural continuity of ideas occurs. Thus the reader is able to trace the intellectual transmission, growth, and development of particular schools of linguistic thought. Among the American and European linguists, included are Sir William Jones, Wilhelm von Humboldt, Jacob Grimm, W. D. Whitney, Ferdinand de Saussure, Edward Sapir, Nikolaj Trubetzkoy, Franz Boas, Leonard Bloomfield, and Leo Spitzer

Abstract: "Astonish me!" was an early command of one of Jean Cocteau's mentors, Serge de Diaghileff. It was an admonition he apparently never forgot. Poems, paint- ings, plays, films, novels, criticism-he was creator and master of them all. In this volume Wallace Fowlie pre- sents a biographical and a historical-critical study of Cocteau in all his guises, together with background ma- terial on Cocteau's major works. There is also a chapter on the special relationship between Cocteau and Pablo Picasso, their friendship, and the ways in which they in- fluenced each other artistically. But more than a portrait or a critical study, the book achieves what its subtitle implies: it is a study of a poet's age. Cocteau's personal world was inhabited by Apollinaire, Diaghileff, Stravin- sky, Maritain, and Genet, as well as such figures as Mistinguette, the Parisian singer, and a former world champion boxer, Al Brown. Mr. Fowlie's work will be treasured not only by devotees of Jean Cocteau but by all who are fascinated by the turbulent brilliance of Paris during Cocteau's lifetime

Abstract: In this volume the author presents a thoroughly considered critical and historical analysis of the theory of sensation as originated by Descartes, and concludes that the theory is basically wrong. Examining and finding unsatisfactory the original proofs of the theory, Mr. Chapman goes on to demonstrate that the notion of sensations as the basis of knowledge has been inherited successively by philosophers who assumed it to be correct without scrutinizing it critically. He analyzes the processes which the mind would have to carry out in transforming a manifold of sensations into orderly ex-perience and knowledge of an empirical world, and discusses the celebrated doctrine of "constitution," now seen to be the natural offspring of the sensation theory, which became an essential part of the transcendental phenomenology of Edmund Husserl. In a particularly brilliant discussion the author argues that Husserl put forth two conflicting doctrines, the theory of sensation (including the notion of "constitution") and the classical idea of intentionality. He concludes that the sensation theory must give way, that it has foisted on modem philosophy an illusory problem of knowledge and diverted metaphysics from inquiry to speculation

Abstract: For many years teachers of English felt that linguistics had little to do with their day-to-day classroom activities. More recently, during a period of change which affected the teaching of many subjects, the attitude toward linguistics underwent a sudden and sharp reversal. Linguistic methods of English teaching became a common topic of formal and informal discussion. Today there is a real danger that the profession may be expecting too much from linguistics. In this volume Mr. Marckwardt presents a cool, realistic analysis of the possible applications of linguistics to English teaching at all levels of instruction. He deals first with the direct application of linguistics to the teaching of grammar and to thorny questions of usage. Next, he considers the areas where the use of linguistics is partial or indirect: composition, spelling, reading, and literature. Finally, because he believes that all teaching must be conducted in terms of a broad educational philosophy, the author includes a discussion of the place of language study in the curriculum

Abstract: Based on a series of lectures given at Indiana University in 1964, The Linguistic School of Prague discusses the famed Prague Linguistic Circle and its work. The book was originally described on its original 1966 cover flap as follows: "In this volume ... Josef Vachek, one of the original members of the famed [Prague Linguistic] Circle, traces its prehistory adn the general linguistic context in which the Circle came into existence. He also provides an illuminating account of the sepecific Prague conception of language as a system of systems in motion-a dynamic structure-and illustrates how the Prague approach differs from those of the Cophanhagen and Yale linguistic groups. In succeeding chapters, Professor Vachek discusses in detail the analysis of the phonic level-both synchronic and diachronic-and main problems of morphonology and morphology, as well as of grammar and style. Special attention is given to the historical development of language, ... [and] in conclusion the author relates the Prague approach to that of present-day mathematical and applied linguistics, whose adherents have admittedly drawn some inspiration from the Prague ideas of the thirties."

Abstract: The first publication of Psycholinguistics in 1954 signalled a revolution in linguistic theory. Until that time, psycholinguistics, which developed severally from language-oriented research in psychology and from psychologically-oriented research with verbal behavior in linguistics, remained on the peripheries of the established disciplines. The renewed interest and intensified cooperative work witnessed in this book resulted largely from the impact of modern science on linguistics and the questions raised by other behavioral scientists. The contributors, among them psychologists Donald E. Walker, John B. Carroll, and Kellog Wilson and linguists Sol Saporta and Leonard D. Newmark, examine the ap-proaches of the linguist, the learning theorist, and the in-formation theorist to appraise their utility for handling a variety of problems, and to discover how they can be placed in a common conceptual framework
