    Schlagwort(e): Western "classical" music
Kurzfassung: After its eclipse by the piano, the harpsichord survived primarily as a museum curiosity until the end of the nineteenth century. But early in the new century the player and builder Arnold Dolmetsch found a ready market for his harpsichords, clavichords, and virginals and an eager audience for his chamber concerts featuring these new/old instruments. In 1923 the incomparable Wanda Landowska made her American debut. This tiny woman, almost a cult figure, was to exert a powerful influence on the course of harpsichord playing for the next half century. Among her students were Putnam Aldrich, the harpsichord duo of Philip Manuel and Gavin Williamson, Alice Ehlers, and, for a short time, Ralph Kirkpatrick. Landowska's instrument was the heavy, durable Pleyel. As the harpsichord and authentic instrument revival progressed, American builders started to produce lighter instruments, and in recent years do-it-yourself builders have been buying harpsichord kits. Sylvia Marlowe is famous for playing jazz on the harpsichord, and in a reversal of past practice, harpsichordists are now borrowing the music of the piano and making it their own. The harpsichord has come a long way from the days when reviewers patronizingly described it as "quaint," "tinkling," or sounding like "a regiment of mice." It can be powerful and tender, dramatic and delicate, and in the minds of many, the only medium for the performance of early music

Kurzfassung: In Writing Joyce, Lorraine Weir proposes a paradigm shift in Joyce studies away from the preoccupation with referential mimesis and toward a theory of processual mimesis and a materialist semiotics. Rather than emphasize plot, character, and psychology, Weir approaches A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses, and Finnegans Wake as a system, a memory theater whose mnemonic repertoires readers comprehend according to directives coded in the text. "In Writing Joyce," says Weir, "we encounter the system as a teaching machine, whose purpose is to teach us itself." To write the system is both to invent and to perform it," she writes, " 'invent' in the medieval rhetorical sense of invention, to come upon or discover what is already given and, working with the text, to 'draw out' or foreground its modes of operation. In the process of acquiring competence in the working of the system, to write Joyce is to be written by the system which is 'Joyce.' " Weir's book reconsiders such familiar topoi in Joyce studies as epiphany, catechism, pun/catachresis, and Joycean "music" from within a semiotics of the system as performative discourse. Rejecting postmodernism's construction of high modernism, Writing Joyce seeks an expanded understanding of modernity that reaches back to Gothic pedagogy and to Vico's new science, to a grammatology grounded in a semiotics of the perceived environment as a knowable world. Through the discussion of texts ranging from Ignatius Loyola to Roland Barthes and from Giambattista Vico to Louis Zukofsky, Writing Joyce seeks to formulate the Joyce system in its own terms while expanding the boundaries of literary semiotics

Kurzfassung: When Jean Genet, the enfant terrible of the French theater, died on April 15, 1986, he left a rich and controversial literary legacy. Genet, a homosexual and ex-convict, wrote about events and in a language that could ruffle the complacency of the most sophisticated reader. His work can be seen as a struggle of the social outcast to be heard from beyond the borders of the dominant, heterosexual culture. This challenging book tracks the effects of this struggle in Genet's novels, plays, film, and political essays by means of a general semiotics of performance. By staging a dialogue between Genet and writers such as Derrida, Bakhtin, Metz, Ricoeur, and Benveniste, Laura Oswald pursues the question of performance in the form of a debate rather than that of a closed theoretical system. Her approach puts into play relations between semiotics and philosophy and provides a means of understanding the relationship between Genet's poetics and his radical politics. By focusing on the role of the double in Genet's literary imagination and by reading Genet with his "others" in the realm of theory, Oswald comes to grips with the overriding concerns of a man whose life in literature was never very far from his life as prisoner, as outcast, as self-proclaimed exile

Kurzfassung: From the Spanish mission days of the seventeenth century to the present, the organ mirrors to a remarkable degree its social, economic, and cultural setting. It has unique characteristics that bind it more closely than any other instrument to its location, to social and economic changes, and to fluctuations in musical taste. Immigration, wars, industrial growth, the availability of electricity, the popularity of orchestral music, and the invention of the phonograph and of the player piano all had a part in determining the course of American organ history. Orpha Ochse provides descriptions and specifications of instruments representative of the various periods of organ building: from the small tracker-action organs built by the colonists to the electropneumatic monsters of the early twentieth century to today's repertoire-oriented instruments. She shows how the design is affected by the intended use of the organ-in a church, a home, or a concert hall-and by the music written for it. This comprehensive account of the development of the organ in the United States will be valuable not only to players and builders but also to students of Americana

Kurzfassung: Taking issue with a widely held view that Nietzsche's writings are essentially fragmentary or aphoristic, Gary Shapiro focuses on the narrative mode that Nietzsche adopted in many of his works. Shapiro proposes a reading of Nietzsche that recognizes his rigorous critique of the metanarratives of traditional philosophy and religion but that also takes seriously the philosopher's claim to be a master of many styles. By articulating the stories and the critique of story-telling to be found in Nietzsche's writings, Nietzschean Narratives explores the radically plural and yet inevitable nature of the narrative function. Shapiro offers extended readings of three emblematic but contrasting narrative works-Thus Spoke Zarathustra, The Antichrist, and Ecce Homo. His approach is informed by the tension between the critical and the poetic sides of Nietzsche's narrative thought and practice and by the issues raised in recent literary and philosophical discussions of Nietzsche's writing. Such Nietzschean themes as eternal recurrence, the question of origins, and the problematics of self-knowledge are reinterpreted in the context of the narratives in which Nietzsche develops or employs them

Kurzfassung: Not since the culturally and politically exciting period of the sixties has there been such an outpouring of stylistically varied and sociopolitically significant films from the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. In recent years, films from these countries have captured numerous awards at prestigious international film festivals and have been the subject of major retrospectives at important cultural centers in the United States and Western Europe. Post new wave developments have been variously hailed as a second new wave, as the new model in the Soviet Union, the new Yugoslav film in Yugoslavia, the cinema of moral concern in Poland, and the new Hungarian cinema in Hungary. This book is the first to systematically survey and analyze recent cinematic developments in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, and to do so within the context of contemporary sociocultural and political developments. Each national cinema is discussed and analyzed by a noted authority, with chapters devoted to the Soviet Union (Anna Lawton), East Germany (Sigrun D. Leonhard), Czechoslovakia (Peter Hames), Poland (Frank Turaj), Hungary (David Paul), Bulgaria (Ronald Holloway), and Yugoslavia (Daniel J. Goulding)

Kurzfassung: The Lost Chord is a pioneering effort to establish the place of music in the life and literature of Victorian Britain and to establish its value as art. In an introductory essay, Nicholas Temperley gives a detailed assessment of the current state of research in this field and examines the reasons for the relative obscurity of most Victorian music, which he traces to the Victorians' own belief that great music must come from across the Channel. The intrinsic value of Victorian music is the main message of Peter Horton's essay on Samuel Sebastian Wesley and Linda K. Hughes's critical study of Arthur Somervall's song cycle on Tennyson's Maud; but both also examine the proper function of music, a subject that greatly concerned many Victorian writers and thinkers. Among them was John Ruskin, whose ideas and musical compositions are explored by William J. Gatens. The function of music in education is the subject of Bernarr Rainbow's essay, while Mary Burgan surveys the treatment of music as an occupation for women in nineteenth-century fiction. Robert Bledsoe investigates the reception of a great Italian composer, Giuseppe Verdi, by Victorian critics and audiences. Since, as Temperley points out, serious Victorian music is difficult for the general reader to locate, the book is accompanied by a special cassette recording of music to illustrate some of the essays

Kurzfassung: Elaborating a theory of consciousness that Kant made only partially explicit in the Transcendental Deduction of the Critique of Pure Reason, Richard E. Aquila offers a novel reading of Kant's theories of synthesis and conceptual rules, productive and reproductive imagination, the distinction between judgments of perception and experience, and the relations between self and objects. Aquila builds on the Transcendental Aesthetic's view of the formation of intuitional consciousness out of sensory matter and proposes a theory of concept formation, in the Transcendental Deduction, out of analogously conceived bodies of imaginative matter. Kant is seen here as offering a formidable synthesis of the purely animal and the distinctively human in human consciousness

Kurzfassung: In this innovative study, Stephen Nimis applies the insights of semiotics to the analysis of the epic simile in works by Homer, Apollonius of Rhodes, Vergil, Dante, and Milton. Through close structural readings of the similes in these works, Nimis explores the ways texts relate to their narrative traditions and shows how changing cultural contexts produce different ways of conceiving and constructing meaning. He traces these transformations in the epic from the integrated warrior culture of the Iliad to the dissolution of the epic tradition in the cultural world of Milton's Paradise Lost

Kurzfassung: How might an understanding of semeiosis enrich our understanding and appreciation of the literary work? Micael Cabot Haley investigates the creative working of metaphor from the perspective of the semeiotic theory of Charles Sanders Peirce. Haley bringes Peirce's sign theory, categories, philosophical realism, and objective idealism to bear upon metaphor, illustrating the role of figruative semeiosis as a creative principle of semantic growth in literature, language, and consciousness. The Peircean metaphor is shown to be a "metaicon," which appears in poetry as a perennially fresh srchetypal metaphor, generating a myriad of poetic diagrams and images. Peirce's central man-as-symbol metaphor is revealed as grounded in a symmetrical metaicon controlling and guiding abductive discovery of many kinds. Haley applies this Peircean scheme to actual literary uses of metaphor by such poets as William Shakespeare, John Keats, and T. S. Eliot, revealing in abundant detail just how Peircean conception works itself out in practice. Haley's clear-headed, perspicacious analysis takes a first step toward the founding of a Peircean semeiotic of figurative language

Kurzfassung: Rosemary Zumwalt examines the split between the literary folklorists and the anthropological folklorists during the period from 1888, when the American Folklore Society was founded, to the early 1940s, when control of the Journal of American Folklore by the anthropologists was ended. At the center of the conflict were concerns of professionalism, science, and academic discipline. For the literary folklorists, the orientation was toward literary works and the unwritten tradition from which they derived. Folklorists a·lso focused on the study of literary types or genres. Child and Kittredge studied the ballad; Thompson, the folktale; Taylor, the riddle and the proverb. In anthropology, study was directed toward cultures without writing, and the emphasis was on fieldwork. Boas in his own writings, and in training his students, stressed collection of every aspect of the life of a people. And part of that material collected was folklore. The literary folklorists looked at literary forms for folklore while the anthropological folklorists looked at the life of the people and saw folklore only as part of it. Although this discipline-bound focus of the two factions created friction and led the two groups in different directions, it helped shape the development of the discipline in the United States

Kurzfassung: Alexander Pushkin's dazzling poetic masterpiece, Eugene Onegin (1823-1831), occupies a unique place in the history of Russian culture, regarded as the national epic as well as the cornerstone of the nineteenth-century Russian novel. Onegin is so central to Russian culture that generations of Russians have been on intimate terms with its characters, its form, and its flavor, and, from the time of its publication until the present, every important critical movement or literary theory has addressed it. Yet, because the poem's literary qualities are exceptionally difficult to convey in translation, Onegin is little known among non-Russians. This anthology, presenting in English the most influential nineteenth- and twentieth-century criticism devoted to Onegin, offers English-speaking readers an appreciation of the poem's hold on the Russian imagination while illuminating the history of Russian criticism itself

Kurzfassung: The Theory of Oral Composition presents the first history of the new field of oral-formulaic theory, which arose from the pioneering research of Milman Parry and Albert Lord on the Homeric poems. From their studies an interdisciplinary field of research and scholarship has emerged that draws on the methods of literary studies, folklore, anthropology, and linguistics. Foley examines the roots of oral-formulaic theory in nineteenth-century philology and anthropology, documents the contributions of Parry and Lord, measures the effect of Lord's comparative extensions through the impact of The Singer of Tales, and considers important recent contributions. A select bibliography of more than 700 items and a subject-author index enhance the scholarly usefulness of this study

Kurzfassung: Bohlman examines folk music as a genre of folklore from a broadly cross-cultural perspective. His study espouses a more expansive view of folk music, a view stressing the vitality of folk music in non-Western cultures as well as Western, in the present as well as the past. A wide range of examples-especially from the Middle East and American ethnic communities-illustrates the sheer richness of folk music in the twentieth century. A reconsideration of the folk musician as an agent of creativity underscores the book's assertion that folk music is not a disappearing genre, but rather an expressive behavior intrinsically part of the modern world

Kurzfassung: Crime Victim Stories looks at the frightening world of urban violence. Eleanor Wachs analyzes stories of muggings and other crime experiences told by native New Yorkers. By using the personal-experience narrative, the author shows how these shocking stories about the danger and violence of city streets reveal attitudes toward crime, urban groups, and life in general in New York City. These true accounts, frequently embedded in social conversations, suggest ways in which city folk plan to thwart future victimization and tell how a candidate for a mugging-almost anyone-can avoid becoming a victim. These narratives reveal that two standard folklore forms, the urban legend and the shaggy dog story, are the underlying models of crime-victim stories. Oral stories about urban crime often differ from their newspaper counterparts, demonstrating the tenacity of oral tradition in a cosmopolitan environment. Readers will be surprised to learn that these horrifying, and sometimes titillating, stories are filled with stock characters such as the trickster mugger and the clever victim who try to outsmart each other. Crime Victim Stories presents oft-told tales of city life that sometimes shock, often entertain, and also enhance our understanding of daily experience in what is believed to be one of America's most dangerous cities

Kurzfassung: Does the end of modernism signal the onslaught of some form of anarchistic nihilism, as some today proclaim? Or can the traditional guiding notions of philosophy-in particular, meaning, truth, and reality-be revitalized in a nonfoundational, postmetaphysical, decidedly postmodern way? The figures about whom G. B. Madison writes are active participants in this unfolding debate: Husserl, Gadamer, Hirsch, Ricoeur, Merleau-Ponty, Derrida, Barthes, and Rorty. In a decidedly postmodern fashion, Madison also takes up such central themes as thenature of metaphysical thinking, metaphor, imagination, subjectivity, intersubjectivity, and the mind/body problem. Common to the essays presented here is a central preoccupation with the fate of philosophy and of traditional philosophical concerns in a postmodern age. Throughout, an attempt is made to bring into focus the decisive questions posed by the demise of foundationalist philosophy, of the epistemological subject and the objective world, and of the traditional, objectivistic ideas of knowledge and truth

Kurzfassung: Drawing upon theories of folkloristic performance, deconstructive criticism, and reader-response theory, Sandra Dolby Stahl has developed a unique methodology for the examination of oral personal narratives, stories that people tell based on their own experiences. Such stories are not traditional in the usual sense but are instead a creative response to experience and the tradition of narration. Hearing such stories is also a creative response, one that requires the perception of traditions or "allusions" in the story and its performance. It is to these interpretive allusions that our attention is drawn throughout the book. Stahl begins her analysis with a discussion of the genre of personal narrative and the seemingly universal practice of turning events and experiences into narratives. She also discusses the state of interpretive research in folkloristics. Folk-narrative research has generally been analytical, attending to questions of form, structure, style, or function; few interpretive studies of folk narrative have been published. Because the personal narrative has only recently become a part of folklore research, Stahl's interpretive attention to the genre is unprecedented. Her study includes two lengthy chapters in which two transcribed narrative texts are meticulously analyzed and subjectively interpreted-as allusion upon allusion creates meaning for the listener (and reader)

Kurzfassung: A Catalogue of 18th-Century Symphonies makes possible for the first time a comprehensive view of one of the largest and most significant repertories in the history of music. Until now, no one has known for certain who wrote what, and hundreds of symphonies have been attributed in manuscript and printed sources to two or more composers. Under these conditions no reliable history of the symphony could be written. Now, thanks to Jan LaRue·s indefatigable efforts, we know how many symphonies have survived from the eighteenth century, where they are, their composers, and how many each composer wrote; and we can see at a glance the favorite keys, movement sequences, and instrumental combinations that were used. Volume I, Thematic Identifier, enables the user to identify more than 13,000 symphonies by means of the note names of the opening bars of the first violin part. This powerful reference tool also tells whether a particular symphony exists anywhere under a different name and whether there are any anonymous sources for the work. Volume II, Composers' Worklists, will provide detailed information for all the symphonies attributed to a particular composer in Volume I. With this indispensable bibliographic resource, Jan LaRue has established a solid foundation for public reference, performance, recording, and future research

Kurzfassung: The Unbroken Chain is the first anthology in any language to present the diversified achievement of Taiwan fiction from the period of Japanese occupation to the present. Representing four generations of Taiwanese writers, the seventeen stories in this unique volume demonstrate that, although Taiwan fiction originated under a foreign regime, it has maintained a distinct Chinese identity nurtured by the fervent national consciousness of its practitioners. The four stories in Part I, written during the period of Japanese occupation, reveal a common concern with national self-respect and pride in the face of foreign domination. In Part II, thirteen stories trace the evolution of themes and styles in Taiwan fiction since 1945, from the "transit-passenger" mentality of the late forties and early fifties, through a period of modernist literary experimentation in the 1960s, to a search for social and cultural roots in the so-called hsiang-t'u morality tales of the 1970s. Illustrative of the last are two especially powerful stories, Huang Ch'un-ming's "I Love Mary" and Ch'en Ying-chen's "Night Freight," about the corrosion of Chinese identity by materialistic American culture. Each selection is prefaced by a short biographical sketch that identifies the special qualities of the author and places the story within its sociohistorical context. A valuable introduction for the student as well as for the general reader interested in Chinese life and culture, The Unbroken Chain establishes Taiwan fiction as an important link in the great chain of modern Chinese writing begun by the May Fourth Movement of 1919

Kurzfassung: E. Power Biggs was one of the most influential figures in the American musical world during the middle decades of the twentieth century. As a popular radio performer in the 1940s and 1950s, a renowned recitalist, and a prolific recording artist, he stood for the best in organ music and the best in instruments. Biggs played everything from Buxtehude, Bach, and Handel to Hindemith, Scott Joplin, and Ives; and he experimented with such diverse media as the pedal harpsichord and the latest in quadraphonic sound recording. He encouraged American composers to write new works for the organ, which he performed regularly on the radio and at his recitals in the United States as well as abroad. Biggs eschewed electronic instruments and did everything he could to encourage churches and concert halls to acquire instruments by the best builders. He was one of the pioneers in the return to smaller, tracker-action organs for the performance of the Baroque and Classical literature. In his search for authenticity, he recorded the music of Frescobaldi, Soler, Sweelinck, and Bach, among others, on the instruments they had actually played. Although E. Power Biggs was born in England, he dedicated himself to his adopted country. He attracted a devoted following, achieved great fame, and revolutionized the organ world

Kurzfassung: Taking issue with Transformational Grammar Theory, which has dominated language study since Noam Chomsky introduced it more than thirty years ago, Sebastian Shaumyan separates language from psychology, arguing that language occupies a different world, that of the semiotic. The author develops a unique theory based on an analysis of the semiotic properties of language, which he names applicative grammar. This theory is then used to distinguish two levels of grammar and outline a comprehensive semiotic theory of language

Kurzfassung: The symbols used in the notation of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century music are tantalizingly similar to those of modern notation, but their meanings can be very different. The right musical pronunciation is avidly sought by today's scholars and performers and by an increasingly demanding modern audience. Transcribing earlier notation into our modern system, in which time signatures and bar lines indicate regular accents and dynamic stress, distorts music that may have been conceived quite differently. Using theoretical treatises and instruction manuals of the period, George Houle provides a practical guide to the performance of Baroque and early Classic-period music, including discussions of notes inegales, keyboard fingerings, woodwind tonguings, and string bowings. Creating a persuasive beat, he advises, requires a paradoxical mixture of precision and flexibility that avoids both mechanical regularity and unpredictable caprice. These principles are demonstrated on an unusual cassette tape, available separately. Realized by means of a computer program, it reconstructs fifteen examples of music from the late eighteenth century, reproducing not only the melodies but the metrical articulations of these pieces. When performed according to the conventions of its own time, seventeenth- and eighteenth-century music has a wonderful lilt and grace and a compelling vitality

Kurzfassung: This translation of the work of one of the founding fathers of literary structuralism and semiotics in Italy is a timely introduction to the theoretical study of literary communication. Marcello Pagnini is a leading figure in the post-structuralist endeavor to return the text to something resembling its social matrix. He explores not only the dynamics of the author/reader rapport but also the connections between the literary text and its sociocultural and historical contexts

Kurzfassung: Camera Politica is a comprehensive study of Hollywood film during a period of tremendous change in American history. A unique combination of history, political theory, and film analysis, Camera Politica argues that Hollywood film provides access to the matrix of cultural, economic, political, and psychological factors which undermined liberalism and led to the rise of conservatism in this era. Camera Politica combines the deconstructive analysis of film and culture with the Marxist critique of ideology, and it brings together social scientific research, contemporary psychoanalytic theory, discourse analysis, and textual criticism. The book will be of value to political scientists for its structural analysis of the cultural roots of political change, to historians for its account of the internal dynamics that caused the failure of liberalism and the rise of conservatism in the 1970s and 1980s, to social theorists for its revision of the received way of understanding the operations of cultural domination, and to film scholars for its accessible examples of deconstructive film analysis and for its inclusive account of the major genres, films, and directors of this era in Hollywood

Kurzfassung: The concept of affinities, or pitch relationships, was fundamental to modal theory in the Middle Ages and the early Renaissance. For the first time, Delores Pesce brings together theoretical perspectives on this subject from the end of the ninth century to the middle of the sixteenth, spanning the ideas of Hucbald through Guido of Arezzo, Jacques de Liège, Marchetto of Padua, Tinctoris, and Aaron to those of Glareanus. Pesce provides a comprehensive survey of problematic chants and of medieval solutions for them. She also traces the arguments that led to the rejection of the affinities and the acceptance of transposition in the modern sense. Scholars will find this volume invaluable for addressing issues related to modal classification and notational practices, in both chant and polyphony

Kurzfassung: All of the major themes of Edmund Husserl's phenomenology, from the Logical lnvestigations to The Crisis of the European Sciences, are investigated from a critical point of view by James M. Edie. The philosophy of logic is considered insofar as it relates to the phenomenological and transcendental foundation of logic itself. Transcendental logic is studied with reference to both the formal logic of Aristotle and Leibniz and the dialectical logic of Hegel. Edie considers Husserl's theories of meaning and reference, intentionality, the distinction between perceptual and eidetic intuition, the notion of the ideality of meaning, the laws of objectivity in general, and formal and material ontology, as well as Husserl's reinterpretation of the apriori. Concerned throughout with the study of language and its place in phenomenology, Edie pays special attention to Husserl's conception of pure apriori grammar in its relationship to contemporary linguistic structuralism. The book culminates in an exploration of the more dramatic elements in Husserl's phenomenology, which are frequently misinterpreted by the existentialists and neglected by the stricter logicians, such as the theory of freedom, the relationship of phenomenology to existentialism, and the various correlative levels of meaning and being within a phenomenological analysis of our experiencing-in-the-world

Kurzfassung: This pathbreaking work lays a new foundation for linguistics: It focuses on people rather than on language and is governed by science rather than grammar or philosophy. A linguistics built on this foundation avoids many intellectual problems, it can confront the full observational details of how people communicate, and provides greater relevance to studies in psychology, sociology, culture, and literature. The goal is nothing less than to provide the basis for a new scientific linguistics. The thesis that grammar and science are incompatible is developed in a carefully reasoned argument that explores the ancient foundations of grammar and considers the widely accepted goals of modern scientific linguistics. Out of this comes the insight that linguistics must choose between being a discipline of pure grammar that studies language as an abstract relation between sound and meaning and rejects science or a scientific discipline that studies people and how they communicate as part of the physical world. Professor Yngve lays out a new and formal notational apparatus capable of confronting in detail all the evidence of how people communicate . His approach provides formal methods suitable for studying previously difficult pragmatic, contextual, and variational phenomena. And it promises to provide greater relevance to adjacent disciplines, such as physiology, psychology, anthropology, sociology, semiotics, cultural and literary studies

Kurzfassung: Mao Tun was indisputably one of the best novelists of twentieth-century China. Perhaps because his struggle to establish himself took place during the most volatile years of the Revolution, his best work has an elemental force that is rare in Chinese fiction, politically committed or otherwise. Yu-shih Chen has provided the first full-length scholarly interpretation of Mao Tun's greatest work. Her approach is broad, taking into consideration social, political, and biographical influences. She gives us detailed and brilliantly original analyses of Disillusionment, Vacillation, and Pursuit, the three novels which together form the great trilogy published under the title Eclipse. The picture that emerges in the analysis of this and subsequent work is of a great writer struggling to reconcile the conflict between idealism and realism, between the dream of the revolutionaries and the far from ideal results. Mao Tun ultimately stood with the Revolution in China. He was a committed revolutionary but he was also-perhaps first of all-a great writer. This indispensable book introduces his major work to English-speaking readers

Kurzfassung: Nietzsche's allusions to women were once taken as evidence of his unmitigated misogyny. However, drawing on notes and sketches for a drama on the intertwined themes of woman, sensual love, and tragic death in Nietzsche's notebooks, David Farrell Krell reveals that Nietzsche's views on women were quite complex and that he wrestled with the meaning of woman throughout his philosophical career. Taking as his point of departure Jacques Derrida's deconstructive reassessment of Nietzsche's styles in Derrida's recent book Spurs, Krell traces the philosopher's deferred efforts to come to terms with the idea of woman. Chapter One focuses on the poem "The Plaint of Ariadne" and shows the vital role played by this mythic figure in Nietzsche's Dionysian philosophy. Subsequent chapters introduce the variant female personifications of Ariadne as they emerged in notes for the unwritten play: Corinna, the principal female character in a proposed drama about Empedocles; Pana, the object of Zarathustra's love; and Galina, a shadowy persona connected with the later sketches of a scenario for Zarathustra's death. Krell concludes that in Nietzsche's writings there was no stable pattern or final resolution for the confrontation of woman with sensuality and death-only indefinite postponement. Dramatic images of women in five graphic works by Edvard Munch enhance this insight- ful study. An appendix includes the relevant German texts

Kurzfassung: Chin p'ing mei, the late Ming dynasty novel, combines rich sensuous detail with an interweaving of reality and fantasy to create a telling portrait of the dynasty's decline. In addition to the explicit sexual detail, the novel also contains a stern Confucian message about the retribution to be expected from decline. Professor Garlitz analyzes the author's varied techniques, the dominant concerns of late Ming China (such as the relationship between family and state, the individual's need for self-knowledge and self-cultivation), and the verbal and narrative structure. Where Chin p'ing mei draws on late Ming popular religion, or quotes drama and song, or incorporates portions of earlier novels and tales, the effect is always the same: hypocrisy and complacency are exposed, facile solutions to difficult moral problems are rejected, and traditional Confucian judgments are affirmed

Kurzfassung: This collection of 51 works by 37 composers is the first compendium of its kind. The compositions, spanning eleven centuries of Western art music, are vital and important and illustrate advanced compositional trends of their age. The earliest works reproduced are two Byzantine chants by Kassia (fl. 840); the most recent is the first movement of Ellen Zwilich's Symphony No. 1, which received the Pulitzer Prize for music in 1983. Some of the outstanding early composers included are Hildegard von Bingen (fl. 1150), Maddalena Casulana (fl. 1560), Francesca Caccini (fl. 1620), and Elisabeth-Claude Jacquet de la Guerre (fl. 1700). From the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries come compositions by Marianne von Martinez, Maria Szymanowska, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, Pauline Viardot, Clara Schumann, and Amy Beach. Among the twentieth-century composers are Ruth Crawford Seeger, Grazyna Bacewicz, Louise Talma, Pauline Oliveros, and Thea Musgrave. Each composer is introduced in a short essay written by an authority on the period or, in the case of some of the living composers, the artist herself. The essays discuss the main aspects of the individual composer's life, her style, and her output, and they suggest additional readings. Since this anthology is designed for use in courses in women's studies, music appreciation, and music history, all style periods and important genres are represented, and all the works in the collection are available on recordings or are easily performed. Historical Anthology of Music by Women reflects the growing interest in and recognition of women's contributions to the arts in general and to music in particular

Kurzfassung: This is the first comprehensive English anthology of poetry from China's last great dynasty, the period 1644-1911. Waiting for the Unicorn is a direct descendant of Sunflower Splendor. After that seminal volume was published, it became clear that many scholars and students wanted more detailed coverage of specific dynasties. The Ch'ing Dynasty was the obvious place to start. This volume presents the works of seventy-two individual poets from Sung Wan (1614-1673) to Ch'iu Chin (1877-1907) and Wang Kuo-wei (1877-1927). Over forty scholars in the United States and Canada have been working together with Professors Lo and Schultz for more than half a dozen years in the selection and preparation of these translations. Besides the translations themselves, there is a short bio-critical essay on each poet and an introduction by the editors

Kurzfassung: Derrida and the Economy of Diffèrance is a study of Jacques Derrida's philosophies, described on its original 1986 front cover flap text as follows: "Despite, or perhaps because of, the popularity of Jacques Derrida among literary theorists, the philosophical community has for the most part ignored or rejected his work. In this valuable introduction to the philosophical implications of Derrida's thought, Irene E. Harvey argues that Derrida is indeed a philosopher, perhaps the most significant philosopher of our time. Situating Derrida's philosophical contribution within the Continental tradition of Kant, Hegel, Nietzche, Husserl, Heideffer, and Levinas, Harvey demonstrates that deconstruction is an approach not only to textuality but also to metaphysics. Tracing the development of Derrida's thought from lesser to greater complexity, Harvey investigates his explicit claims concerning the identity, function, and structure of deconstruction, metaphysics, and differance. She concludes that there exists a relation of economy among these three concepts within the structure of Derrida's work as a whole."

Kurzfassung: Haydn expert A. Peter Brown offers the first detailed and comprehensive study of the composer's keyboard works, encompassing the solo sonatas, keyboard trios, accompanied divertimentos , concertinas and Klavierstücke. Brown first establishes that Haydn was an effective performer on the keyboard instruments of his day. Then, drawing on the latest findings, he devotes two essays to questions of authenticity and dating of keyboard works attributed to Haydn, and another to the central issue for eighteenth- century keyboard music: which instrument is most appropriate for a given work? In investigating the possible influences on Haydn of the Viennese tradition and of C. P. E. Bach, the author concludes that Haydn learned from both but put his own stamp on everything to which he was exposed. In the last three essays, Brown traces the development of Haydn's musical language, describing the relationship of certain genres in the composer's oeuvre and providing a chronological examination of the structure and style of the works in each category. Haydn's contributions to the symphony and the string quartet have long been acknowledged. This meticulously documented study now celebrates Haydn's accomplishments in the realm of keyboard music

He recorded and studied mundane conversations; greetings; discussions of crops, marriages, and village happenings; gossip; social talk at weddings, dinners, and religious ceremonies; and talk among people at work. Various patterns of social interaction, such as pronoun usage, significant pauses, and gestures, are analyzed here in terms of their contributions to the overall meaning of the conversation. While focusing on Iran, Beeman's study in cross-cultural linguistics will clearly be a model for the study of different languages and cultures

Kurzfassung: Since Aristotle, traditional strategies for knowledge have been linear. By contrast, circular epistemology, a basic but rarely discussed concept in Hegel's thought, is a theory of knowledge that does not depend on certainty with respect to first principles. Tom Rockmore examines and evaluates Hegel's novel approach to knowledge against the background of the philosophic tradition, attending to the relation between the systematic and historical aspects of Hegel's thought. After reconstructing the complex historical context in which Hegel's theory took form, Rockmore studies in detail its initial formulation in the Differenzschrift. Circular epistemology is next examined in Hegel's mature thought in both systematic and historic perspectives. Finally, Hegel's approach to knowledge as intrinsically circular is evaluated in relation to subsequent philosophy, especially phenomenology and analytic thought. Rockmore concludes that although Hegel was correct in rejecting linear formsof argumentation, he was wrong in thinking that a circular approach yields knowledge in the full, traditional sense that has been a central goal in philosophical inquiry at least since Plato

Kurzfassung: Why has Nietzsche recently emerged as an important figure of reference in the critical discourse about contemporary culture? Major commentaries on Nietzsche by Heidegger and Derrida, among others, have provoked much current debate about the meaning and present-day relevance of Nietzsche's writings. Is Nietzsche the philosopher of the will to dominate the earth through science and technology, as characterized by Heidegger, or is he the playful deconstructive genealogist of the historical will to power, as construed by Derrida? In this valuable volume, distinguished philosophers and literary theorists address these issues through readings of Nietzsche's major texts, analyses of his positions in relation to precursors and inheritors, and assessments of the critical impact of Nietzsche's thought. Contributors include David Allison, Charles Altieri, Jonathan Arac, Paul Bove, Joseph Buttigieg, Stanley Corngold, Rudolph Gasche, Martin Heidegger, David Farrell Krell, Rudolph E. Kuenzli, George McFadden, J. Hillis Miller, Daniel T. O'Hara, Joseph Riddell, Gary Shapiro, Hugh J. Silverman, Tracy B. Strong, and Cornel West

This major collection of ninety-six stories, most of them newly translated, represents the very best of this tradition. Presented here are stories which are known in the Chinese tradition as chih-k uai (records of anomalies or the unnatural) and the ch'uan-ch'i (accounts of the extraordinary). These are all basically fictional narratives or stories, but, unlike Western supernatural stories, are considered more or less as records of observable facts and have the effect of giving the fantastic a rootedness in historical reality. Underlying the recording of these supernatural stories is a belief in supernaturalism and magic and, above all, the acceptance of the unnatural and the supernormal on their face value as factual. Professor Kao has provided a brilliant and lengthy introduction explaining the genre and its influence on later Chinese literature right down to the twentieth century

Kurzfassung: This is the first English language translation of the Japanese classic Nihon mukashibanashi meii. The work remains the only single-volume reference available to the student of the Japanese folk tale. The author, Yanagita Kunio, was a prominent figure in early twentieth-century Japanese intellectual circles. The Guide is the result of thirty years of folk tale research by Yanagita, his colleagues, and his students. The editor, Fanny Hagin Mayer, having received encouragement and assistance from the late Yanagita Kunio, has brought the 347 folk tale types and the distribution of their variants into conformity with Japanese folk tale scholarship for the use of Western scholars. She has numbered the tale types in the Guide to facilitate reference to Ancient Tales in Modern Japan, the anthology of folk tales selected from the Guide. A complete bibliography of sources, several indexes, and maps have also been furnished by the editor

Kurzfassung: The Semiotics of Built Environment provides an introduction to architectonic analysis, described in the author's preface to the 1979 edition as follows: "This book is concerned with the analysis and description of the built environment as a semiotic system-as a system of meaningful signs. It seeks to establish some of the principal ways in which what will be termed architectonic systems are similar to and different from other forms of human symbolic communication."

Kurzfassung: Since the advent of generative phonology, linguists have turned their attention to elaborating or constraining the 'standard theory'. The present volume, the outgrowth of a conference held at Indiana University in the fall of 1977, engages in dialogue the leading proponents of some of the most stimulating current approaches to phonological theory and makes possible a serious and systematic comparison of their views. Some of the larger questions taken up in this volume are: What specific issues or problems have given rise to each new theoretical approach to force a depature from 'standard theory'? How do the new approaches differ from one another? What aspects of these differences are formal/empirical? Are there any bases for judging one theory or approach to be superior to another?

Kurzfassung: For half a century, Martin Heidegger's philosophical thought has been a towering-even revolutionary-presence on the European scene, yet in the United States and England complete understanding of his enormous importance is still limited. The essays in this volume constitute the first systematic effort to relate the applicability of Heidegger's hermeneutic thought and practice to questions concerning the nature and function of language, the interpretation of literary texts, and the "crises of criticism" central to the postmodern situation. Distinguished philosophers and literary critics address themselves to these issues in the context of the poetics of New Criticism-which they collectively call into question-and in light of the spirited dialogue between proponents of the new currents of hermeneutic and critical thinking-phenomenological, structuralist , deconstructionist -that are vying to replace New Criticism. The volume includes Heidegger's essay "The Age of the World View," translated by Mar jorie Grene; a photographic essay by Donald Bell; and contributions by Stanley Corngold, Frances C. Ferguson, Michael Gelven, Karsten Harries, Albert Hofstadter, David Couzens Hoy, David Farrell Krell, Donald G. Marshall, Richard E. Palmer, Joseph N . Riddel, Alvin H. Kurzfassung: Indiana University's School of Music is widely recognized as one of the world's outstanding performance-oriented teaching institutions. One of the strongest departmenfs in a consistently excellent school is the string faculty. Especially for this vol-ume, twelve artist-teachers from the string department have contributed essays on aspects of their art relevant to practicing, performing, or pedagogy. Although the authors have varied backgrounds-as soloists, chamber music players, orchestra members-and differ widely in age and birthplace, several themes recur throughout the volume: how to make the most of limited practice time, the importance of economy of effort, the similarities of playing a musical instrument and athletic endeavors, and, above all, the respect for a composer's intent that must be every musician's goal. The contributors are James Buswell IV (violin), Josef Gingold (violin), Murray Grodner (bass), Franco Gulli (violin), Georges Janzer (viola), Albert Lazan (violin), Fritz Magg (cello), Laurence Shapiro (violin), Abraham Skernick (viola), Janos Starker (cello), Helga Ulsamer Winold (cello), and Tadeusz Wroński (violin)

Kurzfassung: Until now little of China's massive literary output of the last thirty years has been available to American readers. Literature of the People's Republic of Chinapresents a generous sampling in translation of the literature written in the PRC from 1949 to the present. Included here are more than 200 selections: poems, stories, essays, a hsiang-sheng (comic dialogue), and excerpts from novels, plays, movie scripts, and an opera. The collection opens with an excerpt from Mao Tse-tung's 1942 Talks at the Yenan Forum on Literature and Art, which has served as a Chinese Communist literary manifesto. The other selections treat five major themes: the Communist revolution up to 1949, the land reform experience, the Chinese participation in the Korean War, and the socialist reconstruction of the country. Kai-yu Hsu's informative general introduction, his introductions to each section, and explanatory head notes by the translators help place the literature in the context of political campaigns and conflicting ideologies. Literature of the People's Republic of China not only offers a fascinating glimpse into Chinese life but also demonstrates how creative writers have differed in their ideas of how best to serve the revolution

It is hardly surprising that her life and writings, only recently rediscovered by readers outside Russia, have profoundly influenced many Western radical feminists, some of whom regards her as a role model. Bolshevik Feminist, the first full-scale biography of this magnetic figure to appear in the United States, follows the life of Kollontai from her birth in St. Petersburg in 1872 to her death in Moscow eighty years later

Kurzfassung: China's cultural revolution of the 1960s had an important precedent in the Soviet Union during the First Five-Year Plan, when established authorities and institutions in culture and the professions came under attack from militant Communist intellectuals. One of the most challenging questions for the student ofthis turbulent era is the actual nature of the revolution. Was it "revolution from above," initiated and controlled by the Party leadership, or "revolution from below," brought on by Marxist radicals within the cultural professions and pressure from an upwardly mobile working class? This important book, focused on the transition from NEP to Stalinism, presents both sides of the vigrous current debate

Kurzfassung: Dillon draws upon recent studies of language processing to ask how linguistic form shapes readers' (or hearers') responses to literary texts. The resulting model of comprehension gives an explicit account of the strategies readers may use in analyzing and comprehending passages from Spenser, Milton, Wordsworth, Henry James, Faulkner, Wallace Stevens, and other notoriously "difficult" writers. Dillon's model bears on many of the major issues in current literary theory, such as whether and how "literary" reading differs from other kinds of reading and what the function and importance of ambiguity is within a literary work. The book's overall aim is to supplant William Empson's Seven Types of Ambiguity as an account of how we do and should read literature

Kurzfassung: "Beyond mimesis" might have been a fitting motto for this essay, which asserts that poetry works not through mimesis, the literary representation of reality, but through a semiotic process of displacement and transformation. Drawing on examples from 19th- and 20th-century French poetry (with translations), Riffaterre describes the structure of meaning in a poem . He argues for the self-sufficiency of a literary text and firmly establishes the dialectic between text and reader, between poetic and everyday discourse. The key term in his analysis is the hypogram, a preexistent word group-a cliche, stereotype, epithet , or even another literary work-from which poeticity is derived. Semiotics of Poetry is a lucidly argued and provocative book which will interest readers concerned with poetic and literary theory

Kurzfassung: "Semiotics: A Discipline or an Interdisciplinary Method?" -the query with which the internationally celebrated scholar Umberto Eco has titled his contribution to this volume-articulates a question raised in many quarters and will evoke interest among specialists not only in semiotics but also in communication, linguistics, literary criticism, and anthropology. The thirteen essays in this collection are the outcome of a pilot program in Semiotics in the Humanities held at Indiana University during the 1975-76 academic year. The lectures, a highlight of the program, are here produced in revised form. They fall under four major headings: historiography, with two articles, one on the origins of semiotics and the other on Peirce's theory of signs; methodology, which includes three articles that consider Eco's query and discuss the relation between social communication and semiosis; nonverbal communication, explored among animals and in man, with a focus on sign language in general; culture theory, religion, text analysis, and translation. Sight, Sound, and Sense, together with its companion volume, A Perfusion of Signs (Indiana University Press, 1977), examines the main trends in semiotic theory and praxis and supplies suitable reading in semiotics courses, on both introductory and advanced levels

Kurzfassung: Cripps delineates the elements of black film genre in a brilliant essay, and then analyzes six films and their position in the genre. The Scar of Shame, a silent classic, is a social drama which expresses black economic aspiration. The St. Louis Blues uses the black musical idiom to express dramatic conflict, and features Bessie Smith's only film appearance. The Blood of Jesus speaks with primitive conviction to a black religious fundamentalism. The U.S. Army film, The Negro Soldier, is a strong advocate for black social goals, despite the constraints imposed by its sponsor. The critically acclaimed Nothing but a Man celebrates a heroic pastoralism through a visually symbolic narrative. The author's final example is Sweet Sweet - back's Baadasssss Song, the most notorious of the recent "blaxploitation" films. The book concludes with a useful survey of black film criticism and features a bibliography, a filmography, and illustrations from the films

Kurzfassung: This volume is a general interpretation of Nietzsche's works, with emphasis on the "doctrine of eternal recurrence," which Nietzsche considered his most significant philosophic contribution. Magnus disposes of traditional schools of interpreta-tion and argues a new thesis. First, since the value of life cannot be estimated, for Nietzsche, estimates of life are "self-reference clues," or, in Magnus's words, "conceptual Rorschachs." The doctrine of eternal recurrence is an attitude toward life-that of nihilism overcome. Magnus regards this doctrine as a "countermyth"-an antidote to the flight from experience sanctioned by Christianity, philosophy, and nihilism. A long opening chapter serves as an excellent introduction to Nietzsche's philosophy in general. Subsequent chapters trace the history of recurrence theories, discuss textual and conceptual problems, and, finally, expound the meaning of the doctrine of eternal recurrence

In the early 1950s, inspired by the official Yugoslav critique of the Soviet Union and a relaxed cultural atmosphere, they began to develop a radical interpretation of Marxian theory. THese writers maintained that concepts appearing in Marx's early philosophical writings, especially praxis and alienation, formed the lifelong basis for his work of social criticism and remain applicable to all social formations

Kurzfassung: Most twentieth-century attempts to develop a linguistic approach to literature rest on the assumption that litera-ture exists by opposition to all other uses of language-an assumption traditionally expressed as an opposition between "poetic" and "ordinary" language. Departing radically from this view, and drawing upon the findings of both sociolinguists and speech act theoreticians, Pratt argues against the notion that literature is formally and functionally distinct from our other verbal activities and points the way toward a unified theory of discourse. She shows how the poetic language argument, expounded by the Russian Formalists and developed by structuralists, fails, first on its own grounds, and second in the face of data from non-literary discourse, especially that presented by Labov in his studies of non-literary narrative; and suggests how recent developments in speech act theory and sociolinguistics correct previous theoretical deficiencies. The hypothesis emerges that a descriptive apparatus which can adequately account for non-literary uses of language will give a satisfactory account of literary discourse as well. An immensely important contribution to literary theory and linguistics

Kurzfassung: A state-of-the-art survey of a wide spectrum of sub-disciplines within linguistics by some of the most prominent contributors to linguistic theory of our day. The areas covered include phonology, syntax, semantics, discourse theory, sociolinguistics, and historical linguistics. Taken together, the eight essays in this volume do more than exemplify a number of the most interesting approaches being taken in linguistics today: they point the directions in which the discipline and its most exciting sub-fields are likely to move in the coming decade. The essays and their authors are: "Conditions on Rules of Grammar" by Noam Chomsky; "The Sociology of Language: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow" by Joshua A. Fishman; "Topics in Lexical Semantics" by Charles J. Fillmore; "Semantic Domains and Componential Analysis of Meaning" by Eugene A. Nida, Johannes P. Louw, and Ronda! B. Kurzfassung: This collection celebrates the founding of the Semiotics Society of America. The ten essays cover various aspects of semiotics, ranging from its medical foundations to philosophical concerns, logic, the arts, and social science perspectives. The title echoes a remark by the great American founder of the modern theory of signs, C. S. Peirce, who argued that the entire universe is perfused with signs, if not composed exclusively of them. Accordingly, the theme that runs through this endeavor is that of global unity underlying variety, and a spirit of ecumenicalism that, more and more, characterizes contemporary semiotics. However, the specific ways in which signs function in the different arts and sciences are also clearly brought out. Contributors are Diana Agrest, Paul Bouissac, Mario Gandelsonas, Henry Hiz, James D. Meltzer, Jean-Jacques Nattiez, Erik Schwimmer, Thomas A. Sebeok, Harley C. Shands, Edward Stankie-wicz, Rulon Wells, and J. Jay Zeman

Kurzfassung: A frequent approach to musical analysis is to consider one term or concept at a time, illustrating it with fragments of several compositions. But the format of this original and lucidly written book features entire tonal compositions, one per chapter, analyzed on several levels simultaneously. The author builds up from very simple musical forms, skillfully leading the reader through a measure-by-measure, indeed often beat-by-beat or note-by-note, analysis. The pieces span the period from Corelli to Debussy and hence illus-trate both the flexibility and the historical development of the tonal system. A concluding essay projects this development into the twentieth century, with implications for the analysis of nontonal music. The music discussed in five of the twelve chapters is supplied; the rest of the compositions are standard works

Kurzfassung: In recent years enormous advances have taken place in the field of animal communication. This two-volume collection of essays by experts of international renown presents the latest developments in three main divisions. The introduction and the first six chapters examine major theoretical issues, including both the phylogeny and the ontogeny of communication, as well as pertinent aspects of language and other forms of human communication. The chief mechanisms of communication are taken up in turn in the next seven chapters. The heart of the book consists of surveys of communicative processes in selected groups of organisms, ranging from octopuses and squids to social insects, birds, dog-like and cat-like animals, whales, and the Great Apes, and a special chapter devoted to man-chimpanzee communication. A taxonomic index of animals is included. Contributors to How Animals Communicate are George W. Barlow, Gordon M. Burg-hardt, René-Guy Busnel, David K. Caldwell, Melba C. Caldwell, James A. Kurzfassung: This volume of essays constitutes an up-to-date survey of pidgin and creole linguistics intended for general linguists and readers interested in current theory in such diverse areas as linguistic universals, language acquisition, bilingualism, and language planning. It will acquaint persons relatively unfamiliar with the field with established theories and data, enabling them to follow current debates and to undertake research in the field. Thus it may serve as a basic textbook in courses in sociolinguistics, bilingualism, and language contact, as well as in ethno- or anthropological linguistics, whose focus is language variation and its social and cultural implications. Kurzfassung: Why do visual signals have the characteristics that they do? Why do animals (including man) gesture, posture, and move in communicative fashions? Why are animals colored and patterned in particular ways? Optical Signals is the first attempt to answer these and related questions. After presenting a synthetic framework of social communication, ethology, mathematical information theory, and semiotics, Hailman explains the relevant background: considerations of the physics of light that carry information from sender to receiver, and properties that limit the receiver's ability to get and send information encoded in light. Next Hailman puts together data from different disciplines in order to discover the "design characteristics" of optical signals. The major part of the book concerns these design characteristics and factors that influence them: behavioral patterns and coloration that look like visual signals but are not, principles of visual deception, and the way in which the physical and biological environment structures the characteristics of signals. Lastly, the book considers how the message being transmitted influences the design of the signal itself

Kurzfassung: The glories of the Baroque age, mainly the arts of literature, painting, and music, areewpoint notable for its scope and catholicity. The term Baroque here denotes a period from the early seventeenth to try. From Jensen's method of moving from one country and time to another we discover that Addison's writings, Vivaldi'gs, Shaftesbury's aesthetics, and Coeffeteau's psychology all help elucidate seventeenth-century ideas and works of ajor attention to Enland, but does not neglect France and Italy. Ranging widely over an entire aesthetic movement, he rtistic creation, rhetoric, education, moral values, social mores, scientific discoveries, and issues of taste, and riation of Baroque art

    Schlagwort(e): Philosophy
Kurzfassung: The last decade has seen the reanimation with violence and vitriol of some of the oldest errors of political thought. Perhaps their common spirit is an enthusiasm for shallow and abstract principles along with an accompanying impatience to act now at all costs. Professor Earle has grouped some of these abstractions under the title "Public Sorrows: Ideology"; they include radicalism, the absolute authority of personal conscience, pacifism, the reduction of philosophy to expertise, and the absurd celebration of civilization. He asks whether it is not time to re-open discussion of these stages of the mind, and he invites the reader to reflect on the paradoxes, ironies, and dialectical complexities of social reality. A second part, entitled "Private Pleasures: Philosophy," looks into the mystical, transcendental life of the self in its first-person singularity. If that singularity must experience a certain defeat confronted with a nature whose character is for us hypothetical, this second section looks into a region where the spirit need not be humiliated or alienated: into art, surrealism, subjectivity, and autobiography-domains more valuable because they are closer to home and to the mind's final destiny. This book is not directed solely to philosophers, but will interest the thoughtful layman as well

    Schlagwort(e): linguistics
Kurzfassung: Approaching linguistic science from the combined viewpoint of the philosophy of science and the theory of graphic design, this book offers a radically new treatment of linguistic theory and the history of linguistics. The author analyzes graphic representation, or diagramming, in terms of form and meaning, proposes a taxonomy of linguistic models that cuts across other classifications of linguistic theory, and shows that, like models in the biological and physical sciences, graphic representation has performed and continues to perform a heuristic function for the development of theory in linguistics. This view leads to a reinterpretation not only of the place and function of graphic representation in theoretical linguistics today but also of the history of linguistics. The book suggests new directions for models in linguistics: by making use of the tools furnished by the principles of graphic design, within the context of the principles of the philosophy of science, linguistics can exploit the influence of graphic representation on theory. This is illustrated by two new three-dimensional models for linguistics designed to replace the two principal models now current-the matrix and the tree-both two-dimensional. An analysis of the ways in which new models grow out of old ones and improve upon them demonstrates how graphic representation can furnish linguistics with models and how the design of such models can be improved by applying the principles of graphic design. The view presented here has particular significance for the development of transformational-generative theory

Kurzfassung: This volume analyzes academic exchanges between the United States and the Soviet Union, as well as some of the states of Eastern Europe, from 1958 through 1975 in the framework of Soviet-American cultural relations and of the larger Soviet-American relationship. Academic exchanges with the Soviet Union, which began formally in 1958 and which continue under many of the principles then established, have increased our understanding of the Soviet Union and have created new relationships between our universities and our government. They have often provided the closest and most significant form of personal contact between American and Soviet citizens. They have also played an important political role, although they are called the "neglected aspect" of our foreign policy. They reveal the basic philosophies and policies that separate the two systems and the adversary character of Soviet-American relations

    Schlagwort(e): Folklore, myths & legends
Kurzfassung: Probably in no other country has the marriage of folklore studies and nationalism produced such dramatic results as in Finland. The turning point in the struggle for independence was the intensifying nationalistic sentiment produced by the publication, in 1835, of Elias Lonnrot's Kalevala, an epic based on folk poetry. In the following decades a small band of Finnish scholar-patriots dug into Finnish folklore to forge a literary language, create a national culture, and reconstruct the prehistoric period of the nation's past independence. Folklore and Nationalism in Modern Finland traces the crucial impact of folklore studies on three periods in Finnish history: the era of Swedish and Russian rule; the tense decades between the winning of Finnish independence and the end of World War II; and the postwar period. By studying the increasingly propagandistic application of folklore by both the political right and left and by showing how respected folklore scholars allowed themselves to be swayed by political issues, Wilson raises important questions about the proper use of folklore-and indeed of all the humanities

Kurzfassung: Generations of movie-goers found models for their lives and loves in the powerful images in darkened theatres-images as potent as the viewers' own dreams and as basically entwined with matters of sex and identity. In entertaining, intelligent, lavishly illustrated essays, the authors of Sexuality in the Movies examine the complex evolution of sex and sensuality on the screen ln relation to the changing, often ambivalent values of the public. Part I considers the history of censorship in the movies and the significance of what was belng censored-including an insider's expose of the contemporary rating system. Part II deals with specific genres-what is really going on in the popular Hollywood feature, the flesh film, the monster movie (a fascinating reading), the underground film, and European films-as well as with the treatment of homosexuality in the movies. Part III offers close studies of six major films, outstanding either artistically or as landmarks of sexual expression. A lively, varied, and comprehensive analysis of sexuality in the movies, from early shorts like The Kiss and Love in a Hammock to contemporary achievements like Cries and Whispers and Last Tango in Paris. Over 150 photographs, many of them rarely seen

Kurzfassung: Film and Revolution is an arresting new contribution to film studies by a critic who has constructed an aesthetic of the cinema grounded in Marxian ideology. The longest part of the book, devoted to Jean-Luc Godard, shows how Godard hopes to make his contribution to the revolution of society by inventing a revolutionary cinema. Essays present intelligent, probing analyses of Godard's later major films: Two or Three Things I Know about Her, La Chinoise, Made in USA, Weekend, Le Cai Savoir, One Plus One, Wind from the East, British Sounds, and Tout va bien. Part II,"Film and Revolution on Many Fronts," turns to film making in the Third World and elsewhere, analyzing films by Solanas, Kramer, Rossellini, Makavejev, Ophuls, Harris, and Petri. In Part Ill MacBean examines the semiology of the cinema proposed by Christian Metz and attacks his failure to come to terms with ideology. Finally, MacBean attempts to demystify the ideological package offered by the mass media, particularly the class struggle that is eclipsed by TV and the cinema. Illustrated with more than forty black-and-white stills

Kurzfassung: Prepared in commemoration ofthe fiftieth anniversary of the talkies, The Birth of the Talkies is the first complete, authoritative account of how sound cinema was born. The story begins in 1877 with the invention of the phonograph, which was to provide silent cinema with its earliest form of recorded sound accompaniment. It concludes in 1929, the first year in which a talkie won an Academy Award. En route, the book recounts the various applications of the phonograph in supplying sound for the so-called silent cinema. It surveys the profusion of failures, half-failures, and abortive successes that led ultimately to Vitaphone and the international triumph of The Jazz Singer. Remarkable but virtually forgotten developments such as the Phono-Cinéma-Théâtre of 1900, the Filmsparlants of Léon Gaumont, and the Kinetophone shows of Thomas Alva Edison are described in detail, along with a wealth of information about related efforts to harness the phonograph to the cinematograph. All the early sound films of the Hollywood studios are described and discussed, and a concluding chapter surveys the effects of the sound revolution on the American film industry

    Schlagwort(e): Asian history
Kurzfassung: The dramatic confrontations and shifting alliances of the two great superpowers, and their sometimes disastrous consequences for lesser nations, are set forth in this searching analysis of political developments in the Far East since the Second World War. Hinton skillfully presents the grand design of events in Asia; the period of American ascendancy giving way to an era of Soviet-American strategic parity, which has in turn been succeeded by a multilateral balance of "three and a half powers"-the Soviet Union, the People's Republic of China, the United States-and Japan. Part I (1945-1969) analyzes decolonization and nation-building in South Asia, Japan's re-emergence after the war, the influence of the Cold War upon Asia, and the American attempt to contain and isolate the People's Republic of China. Part II (1969-1974) discusses in greater detail the emerging Sino-Soviet confrontation, the United States' military disengagement from Asia, American detente with China and the Soviet Union, and the resultant new balance of power in Asia. The outcome of more than twenty years' research, this book is for general readers as well as students and scholars

This study both incorporates and reflects the current Soviet policies and attitudes roward the Maoist leadership in Peking; it also enables the reader to project Soviet actions and reactions into the future
