Abstract: "Structuralism" is a term used to designate various trends in modem linguistic science which emerged and became predominant between the two great wars. In this intercontinental effort toward a thoroughly scientific methodology, a team of scholars meeting at the confluence of cultural currents from both East and West became world-famous under the label "Prague School." They produced a host of fundamental studies-many of them long out of print or otherwise inaccessible-dealing with important problems in general linguistics. An anthology of these papers has been assembled and edited especially for Indiana University Studies in the History and Theory of Linguistics by one of the original and most prominent representatives of functional linguistics, Josef Vachek, Senior Research Worker of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. Included are studies by A. Artymovyč, Bohuslav Havránek, Karel Horálek, A. V. lsačenko, Roman Jakobson, Serge Karcevskij, J. M. Korínek, Vilem Mathesius, L'udo- vít Novák, Eugéne Pauliny, I. Poldauf, Vladimir Skalička, B. Trnka, P. Trost, N. S. Troubetzkoy, and Josef Vachek

Abstract: "God is dead," proclaimed Nietzsche; meaning that neither nature nor the supernatural can provide any solid ground on which to base rules or standards of human conduct. To this dictum, which is consciously or unconsciously accepted by many people today, the author of this book takes strong exception. There are, he believes, rational grounds for ethical standards, for an "art of living" the good life; and he defends this thesis with arguments derived from the great Greek philosophers but focused on problems of modern living. Writing in non-technical language, the author acknowledges his debt to Aristotle (and also Socrates and Plato), but his purpose is not merely to restate Aristotle's ideas but "to use him in a modern effort to set forth and justify a rational system of ethics." Mr. Veatch makes short shrift of modern philosophical writers who merely analyze the language of ethics but disclaim any concern with its content, and he vigorously refutes objections to his position made by relativists, behaviorists and utilitarians. Existentialists, on the other hand, he finds closer to the search for a rational ethic than is commonly supposed. While his discussion centers on ethics, he acknowledges the important role of religion in human conduct. Thoughtful readers and students will welcome this attractive and intelligible presentation of the case foe a realistic ethics in modern life

Abstract: The work here presented is a definitive study of Middle English musical terms, arranged on a modified historical principle and based, as the bibliography will show, on essentially everything published in Middle English. Terms included in the study refer to the theory, the performance, the materials, and the forms of Middle English music. As in the OED and MED, but with more concentration on musical applications, definitions are given for all terms and are illustrated by chronologically arranged examples. For terms of low incidence all of Professor Carter's quotations have been used; for those of moderate or high incidence, only the earliest, and the most varied and interesting

Abstract: Cheremis Musical Styles serves as a guide to a specific style of folk music only just becoming known to worldwide academia as of its original publication in 1960. The original preface by Thomas A Sebeok printed in the book had the following to say in regards to its contents: "While ... Cheremis music has received sensitive and sophisticated attention, yet it has hitherto been approached in a curiously indirect way ... . Bruno Nettl's monograph ... is the first systematic and comprehensive account of Cheremis musical style (and ancillary topics) as an autonomous object of study. ... Nettl's work ... [on] the architectural relationship between these two systems-between folk poetry and folk music-remains largely uncharted."
