Kurzfassung: Big Data: when the size and performance requirements for data management become significant design and decision factors for implementing a data management and analysis system. For some organizations, facing hundreds of gigabytes of data for the first time may trigger a need to reconsider data management options. For others, it may take tens or hundreds of terabytes before data size becomes a significant consideration.

Kurzfassung: This IBM® Redbooks® publication discusses IBM Tivoli® Netcool® Service Quality Manager V4.1.1 data mediation development. It is aimed at implementers and system integrators connecting new data sources that will be managed by Service Quality Manager. Data mediation in Service Quality Manager is performed by Perl gateways. Gateways extract data from vendor specific hardware monitors and prepare the data to be loaded into the Service Quality Manager application. The development aspect of data mediation for gateways uses Perl extensively. The control files or rules are written as Perl subroutines. We discuss the detailed specifications and processing of these mediation rules.

Kurzfassung: You may be passionate about photography, and own a digital SLR with perhaps more advanced equipment as well. But do the photographs you take with this powerful equipment come out as well as you'd like? With this fascinating and beautifully illustrated book, you learn how to apply the techniques and principles of classic photography so you can make great images with today's digital equipment. Harold Davis, author and renowned fine art photographer, puts the focus in Practical Artistry on light and exposure, two crucial concepts you need to understand and master if you are to truly capture the images you see. Davis presents a generous number of his own images in each chapter, complete with technical information and an explanation of what he was trying to achieve. These striking photographs not only illustrate the lesson at hand, but also serve as inspiration for your own efforts. Browsing the photographs alone will tell you a lot. Topics covered in this book include: Camera, lenses, and equipment Understanding exposure and measuring light Relationship of aperture to shutter speed and ISO Working with depth of field Natural lighting, studio lighting, and the use of flash Light and color temperature Working with white balance Photographing at dawn or dusk Photography at night Capturing motion Telling a story with your image Capturing people, places, and things Setting up a digital workflow RAW processing and double RAW processing Adjusting exposure and reducing noise Black & white photography And much more Concise and to the point, Practical Artistry clearly demonstrates that photography, essentially, is writing with light, and that the type of images you produce depend on the many choices you have for using that skill. Harold Davis gives you an array of choices in full living color.

Kurzfassung: Apple has taken iPhoto 08 to a whole new level. Now, in addition to handling upwards of 250,000 images, the program lets you easily categorize and navigate through those photos with a feature called "Events". Plus, new editing tools let you copy and paste adjustments between photos. Books and calendars have been improved, too, as has the program's ability to publish pictures on the Web. Apple makes it all sound easy: drag this, click that, and you're done. But you can still get lost, especially if you're a newcomer. iPhoto '08: The Missing Manual explains how to take advantage of all these powerful tools and new features without confusion or frustration. Bestselling authors David Pogue and Derrick Story give you a witty, objective, and clear-cut explanation of how things work, with plenty of undocumented tips and tricks for mastering the new iPhoto. Four sections help you import, organize, edit, share, and even take your photos: Digital Photography: The Missing Manual offers a course in picture-taking and digital cameras -- how to buy and use your digital camera, how to compose brilliant photos in various situations (sports, portraits, nighttime shots, even kid photography), and how to get the most out of batteries and memory cards. iPhoto Basics covers the fundamentals of getting your photos into iPhoto, organizing and filing them, searching and editing them. Meet Your Public teaches you all about slideshows, making or ordering prints, creating books, calendars and greeting cards, and sharing photos on web sites or by email. iPhoto Stunts explains how to turn photos into screen savers or desktop pictures, using plug-ins, managing Photo Libraries, and even getting photos to and from camera phones and Palm organizers. You also learn how to build a personal web site built with iWeb, and much more in this comprehensive guide. It's the top-selling iPhoto book for good reason.

Kurzfassung: Workload partition functionality, originally introduced in 2007 with the release of IBM AIX Version 6, is a strategic component of the IBM AIX Operating System. With the release of AIX V6.1 TL2 in November 2008, both the core functionality and features related to managing workload partitions have been improved and expanded. This IBM Redbooks publication provides an updated introduction and “how to” guide for system administrators and architects using workload partitions in AIX V6.1 TL2. It builds on the original concepts and practices described in the first Redbooks publication about this topic, Introduction to Workload Partition Management in IBM AIX Version 6.1, SG24-7431 , published in 2007. In AIX 6.2 TL2, significant enhancements to core workload partition functions and new features have been added. Some of the important feature updates provide more flexibility and support for enhanced mobility, improved isolation, and NIM integration. A new and significantly updated version of IBM Workload Partitions Manager for AIX (WPAR Manager), the Web browser-based graphical user interface for managing and monitoring WPARs, is also available. WPAR Manager is a platform management solution that provides a centralized point of control for managing WPARs across a collection of managed systems running AIX.

Kurzfassung: Deploying an identity management solution for a medium size business begins with a thorough analysis of the existing business and IT environment. After we fully understand the organization, their deployed infrastructure, and the application framework, we can define an applicable representation of these assets within an identity management implementation. This IBM® Redbooks® publication, intended for IBM Business Partners, takes a step-by-step approach to implementing an identity management solution based on IBM Tivoli® Identity Manager. Part 1 discusses the general business context and the planning approach for an identity management solution. Part 2 takes you through an example company profile with existing business policies and guidelines and builds an identity management solution design for this particular environment. We describe how the components can be integrated into the existing environment. Then, we focus on the detailed configuration of identity management integration tasks that must be implemented in order to create a fully functional end-to-end solution. This IBM Redbooks publication does not introduce any general identity management concepts, nor does it systematically explain all of Tivoli Identity Manager's components and capabilities; instead, those details are thoroughly discussed in the IBM Redbooks publications: Identity Management Design Guide with IBM Tivoli Identity Manager, SG24-6996, and Enterprise Security Architecture Using IBM Tivoli Security Solutions, SG24-6014.

Kurzfassung: Over years, the typical IT infrastructure grows and is very likely a collection of separated, heterogeneous environments that can collide with today's requirement for companies to react quickly to changing business needs. This changing environment demands a middleware that is both robust and extensible as well as flexible when reacting to change. With WebSphere Middleware products from IBM you can operate flexible service-oriented architectures that overcome these integration challenges. The IBM WebSphere Service-Oriented Middleware product suite includes different integration brokers and a multitude of application and technology adapters. In addition to the adapter-based integration approach, this product suite supports a wide range of open standards to connect any back-end component in a service-like manner to the middleware infrastructure. This book highlights broker-to-broker connectivity to the SAP Exchange Infrastructure as well as direct communication patterns to the SAP WebApplication Server. This book also illustrates how to integrate data and processes that are located in SAP back-end systems that use IBM Service-Oriented Middleware technology. The adapter-based scenarios use the WebSphere adapters for SAP, and the standards-based integration scenarios use the Web Services and Java Message Service capabilities that are built in to the products of both IBM and SAP. Please note that the additional material referenced in the text is not available from IBM.

The virtual world is becoming so similar to the real one that some think the overt laws, or at least agreed-upon rules, may be necessary for the Net to survive in its current open form. If the internet can be ruined by everything from criminals to overzealous politicians responding to those criminals, then how can it be saved? We explore this issue in Release 2.0: Issue 3. Other topics in this issue: Listening to Lawrence Lessig - The man who started it all considers hard, thinks hard, and worries hard - about what code and the law can do. Kurzfassung: In a corporate environment, documents are usually created or captured in a decentralized environment with no overall surveillance. Many corporations have no formal process of retaining these documents as records, which can increase storage costs. In addition, when litigation requests occur, companies can spend a huge amount of money and resources to locate records. In the case when a company is not able to locate records or to locate them on a timely manner, the company is subjected to a financial penalty or, more importantly, damage to the company's reputation. IBM Records Manager is an application and an engine that provides records management capabilities to existing business applications. It provides a single and consistent records management platform to help companies meet government and industry requirements for formal records management. This IBM Redbooks publication provides an introduction to records management and IBM Records Manager. Solution architects, designers, and implementers who plan to implement IBM Records Manager will find this book useful. It also serves as a guide for system administrators or records administrators in performing common records management administration tasks in IBM Records Manager. Lastly, the first part of this book serves as a good starting point for anyone who is interested in exploring the world of records management.

Kurzfassung: Today's computing environment is subject to increasing regulatory pressures and potentially malicious attacks. Regulatory compliance, security, and audit are in the daily headlines and growing more prominent. The security of the information to which you have been entrusted has never been more critical. The reality of compliance is too complex. Compliance demands that you work carefully to set up a strong, comprehensive set of policies and controls. That means controls that consider operational data, financial data, unstructured data, spreadsheets, e-mail, and business intelligence data. We have a responsibility to secure all business data and especially sensitive customer data. Security can be difficult to manage. IBM DB2 for z/OS already resides on one of the most secure platforms in the industry. IBM System z servers are routinely used by enterprises around the world to support their mission-critical applications. The mainframe's strengths in security stem in part from its history of supporting sensitive data for large enterprises, resulting in security features being built into its design for many decades. It also benefits from a system-wide approach with security capabilities built into the hardware, operating systems, databases, key middleware and more. Its highly evolved layers and security management components give it a fundamental advantage over other systems.

Kurzfassung: Building electronic projects that interact with the physical world is good fun. But when devices that you've built start to talk to each other, things really start to get interesting. Through a series of simple projects, you'll learn how to get your creations to communicate with one another by forming networks of smart devices that carry on conversations with you and your environment. Whether you need to plug some sensors in your home to the Internet or create a device that can interact wirelessly with other creations, Making Things Talk explains exactly what you need. This book is perfect for people with little technical training but a lot of interest. Maybe you're a science teacher who wants to show students how to monitor weather conditions at several locations at once, or a sculptor who wants to stage a room of choreographed mechanical sculptures. Making Things Talk demonstrates that once you figure out how objects communicate -- whether they're microcontroller-powered devices, email programs, or networked databases -- you can get them to interact. Each chapter in contains instructions on how to build working projects that help you do just that. You will: Make your pet's bed send you email Make your own seesaw game controller that communicates over the Internet Learn how to use ZigBee and Bluetooth radios to transmit sensor data wirelessly Set up communication between microcontrollers, personal computers, and web servers using three easy-to-program, open source environments: Arduino/Wiring, Processing, and PHP. Write programs to send data across the Internet based on physical activity in your home, office, or backyard And much more With a little electronics know-how, basic (not necessarily in BASIC) programming skills, a couple of inexpensive microcontroller kits and some network modules to make them communicate using Ethernet, ZigBee, and Bluetooth, you can get started on these projects right away. With Making Things Talk , the possibilities are practically endless.

Kurzfassung: If you're an experienced system administrator looking to acquire Linux skills, or a seasoned Linux user facing a new challenge, Linux System Administration offers practical knowledge for managing a complete range of Linux systems and servers. The book summarizes the steps you need to build everything from standalone SOHO hubs, web servers, and LAN servers to load-balanced clusters and servers consolidated through virtualization. Along the way, you'll learn about all of the tools you need to set up and maintain these working environments. Linux is now a standard corporate platform with users numbering in the hundreds of millions, and there is a definite shortage of talented administrators. Linux System Administration is ideal as an introduction to Linux for Unix veterans, MCSEs, and mainframe administrators, and as an advanced (and refresher) guide for existing Linux administrators who will want to jump into the middle of the book. Inside, you'll learn how to: Set up a stand-alone Linux server Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot a DNS server using BIND Build an Internet server to manage sites, perform email and file transfers, and more Set up an email service for a small-to-medium-sized site, complete with authentication Install and configure Apache, PHP, and MySQL on a web server built from scratch Combine computers into a load-balanced Apache web server cluster based on the free Linux Virtual Server Set up local network services from distributed file systems to DHCP services, gateway services, print services, user management and more Use Linux virtualization with Xen or VMWare to run multiple kernels on one piece of hardware; manage each kernel's access to processor time, devices, and memory Create shell scripts and adapt them for your own needs Back up and restore data with rsync, tar, cdrecord , Amanda, and MySQL tools Linux System Administration is not only knowledgeable and practical, but convenient. The ingredients for this book had been scattered throughout mailing lists, forums, and discussion groups, as well as books, periodicals, and the experiences of colleagues. Everything is now in one handy guide. In the course of their research, the authors also solved many problems whose solutions were completely undocumented. They now pass their lessons on to you.

Kurzfassung: A database administrator (DBA) has a challenging job trying to maintain databases in today’s nonstop 24x7 environments. This challenge is compounded by the complexity of database structures and the time pressure of trying to be up again as soon as possible without making mistakes. When business expands, several DB2 subsystems have to be maintained, such as multiple development systems, function test, acceptance test, volume test, and production systems. Often changes have to be implemented across multiple DB2 subsystems. The two IBM DB2 for z/OS tools that help database administrators to implement database changes are the DB2 Administration Tool and the DB2 Object Comparison Tool. In this IBM Redbooks publication we show how, with Version 7.2, the two tools offer an enhanced Change Management function to manage and track the changes of your DB2 objects. We show how the tools help you define changes, resolve conflicts, register the changes, analyze the changes to generate a work statement list that applies the changes, and then run the changes in the correct order. The Change Management functions also allow you to back out completed changes and facilitate the management of a convenient audit trail. This book contains a major update to the Change Management functions described in DB2 for z/OS Tools for Database Administration and Change Management, SG24-6420-01.

Kurzfassung: Service-oriented architecture (SOA) is one of the most important topics on the agenda of any IT person. SOA involves a new vision of how to design, develop, and manage applications. It also has new requirements when building an architecture for the underlying infrastructure. This IBM Redbooks publication is the result of a project managed in the IBM European Design Center, based in Montpellier, France. The scope of the project involved helping a major worldwide customer in the automotive industry to validate and justify an SOA implementation. In particular, the customer wanted to add new business values to work with its partners, by adding new data models. It also wanted to modernize an infrastructure, by adding new Internet interfaces. The customer faced the need to eradicate an obsolete programming language. Furthermore, it wanted to build a smooth migration path, with as few risks and costs as possible. The thought, planning, and architecture of the new system, which included integration of the SOA concepts, was built by the customer with the participation of Atos Origin, a leading international IT services provider. The existing customer IT infrastructure was already built around UNIX systems, IBM System z, non-IBM clusters, SAP solutions, 3270 screens, IMS-DL/I databases, and specific code. SOA was the right solution to connect this existing environment to new components using Java, Web services, and DB2 in particular. This book explores the business needs and the architectural choices that were faced by the customer. It describes the mock-ups and prototypes, provides performance numbers that were used to validate the decisions, and explains how they were implemented. It also suggests a generic and riskless solution to eradicate the obsolete programming language.

Kurzfassung: This IBM Redbooks publication provides an introduction to custom reporting, a feature in Operations Manager. The book describes in detail the commands used to implement and manage custom reports, examples of reports, and reference information for the creation of custom reports within the Operations Manager environment. In any IT environment today there is a frequent and heavy need for reporting capability. These reports may be for managers or for administrative documentation. As the number of reports increases, so does the complexity of the reporting process. For some time Operations Manager has provided an extensive library of standard reports giving administrators the information they need. However, since no two IT organizations are alike, there are always different reporting needs. An organization may require a report that must have data that in the Operations Manager environment is on multiple reports. Rather than submit multiple reports, it would be more efficient to create a report that has just the data objects desired. the custom reporting feature of Operations Manager 3.4.1 provides such functionality. This functionality is discussed further in this book.

Kurzfassung: This IBM Redbooks publication describes the features and functionality of Workplace Forms and each of its component products. After introducing the products and providing an overview of features and functionality, we discuss the underlying product architecture and address the concept of integration. To help potential users, architects, and developers better understand how to develop and implement a forms application, we introduce a specific scenario based on a "Sales Quotation Approval" application. Using this base scenario as a foundation, we describe in detail how to build an application that captures data in a form, then applies specific business logic and workflow to gain approval for a specific product sales quotation. Throughout the scenario, we build upon the complexity of the application and introduce increasing integration points with other data systems. Ultimately, we demonstrate how an IBM Workplace Forms application can integrate with WebSphere Portal, IBM DB2 Content Manager, and Lotus Domino. Note: The code used for building this sample scenario application is available for download. For specific information about how to download the sample code, please refer to Appendix A. Kurzfassung: IBM communication controllers have reliably carried the bulk of the world's business traffic for more than 30 years. Over the years, IBM controllers have been enhanced to the point that the functional capabilities of the current products, the 3745 Communication Controller and the 3746 Nways Multiprotocol Controller , surpass the capabilities of any other data networking equipment ever developed. Beyond the SNA architecture PU Type 4, beyond APPN, even beyond IP routing, these controllers support an extraordinary set of functions and protocols. Because of their long history and their functional richness, IBM controllers continue to play a critical role in the networks of most of the largest companies in the world. Over the past decade, however, focus has shifted from SNA networks and applications to TCP/IP and Internet technologies. In some cases, SNA application traffic now runs over IP-based networks using technologies such as TN3270 and Data Link Switching (DLSw). In other cases, applications have been changed, or business processes reengineered, using TCP/IP rather than SNA. Consequently, for some organizations, the network traffic that traverses IBM communication controllers has declined to the point where it is in the organization's best interest to find functional alternatives for the remaining uses of their controllers so they can consolidate and possibly eliminate controllers from their environments. This IBM Redbooks publication provides you with a starting point to help in your efforts to optimize your communication controller environment, whether simply consolidating them or migrating from them altogether. We discuss alternative means to provide the communication controller functions that you use or ways to eliminate the need for those functions outright. Where multiple options exist, we discuss the relative advantages and disadvantages of each.

Kurzfassung: When you enter the world of syndicated content, you're often faced with the question of what is the "proper" way to do syndication. While syndication feeds have become a standard tool on the Web--you've seen their signposts: a little orange button labeled XML in white letters, or maybe buttons that say Atom, RSS 2.0, RSS 1.0, or even Feed--it is important that your syndication feed be an extension of your site. It should reflect your interests, your concerns, and your choices. This edoc will help you learn about these pervasive little blobs of XML markup: their purpose, the elements that make up a feed, the different formats, and the tools for generating and consuming feeds. The tutorial starts with a succinct description of what a feed really is, then it covers: What Makes Up a Feed: A look at the common container and entry elements for a feed, and what they do. Industry Support: An overview of the major players and tools for syndication feeds. Discovering Feeds: How to make your site easy to subscribe to. Subscribing To and Reading Feeds: A look at various aggregators and how to use them. Which Feeds Work Best for You: Should you use RSS 1.0, RSS 2.0, or Atom? Or all of them? Here's how to decide. This tutorial will help you get your syndication feed up and running, so you can then forget about it and focus instead on what's really important at your site: the content you are providing to the world.

Kurzfassung: Fundamentally, computers just deal with numbers. They store letters and other characters by assigning a number for each one. There are hundreds of different encoding systems for mapping characters to numbers, but Unicode promises a single mapping. Unicode enables a single software product or website to be targeted across multiple platforms, languages and countries without re-engineering. It's no wonder that industry giants like Apple, Hewlett-Packard, IBM andMicrosoft have all adopted Unicode. Containing everything you need to understand Unicode, this comprehensive reference from O'Reilly takes you on a detailed guide through the complex character world. For starters, it explains how to identify and classify characters - whether they're common, uncommon, or exotic. It then shows you how to type them, utilize their properties, and process character data in a robust manner. The book is broken up into three distinct parts. The first few chapters provide you with a tutorial presentation of Unicode and character data. It gives you a firm grasp of the terminology you need to reference various components, including character sets, fonts and encodings, glyphs and character repertoires. The middle section offers more detailed information about using Unicode and other character codes. It explains the principles and methods of defining character codes, describes some of the widely used codes, and presents code conversion techniques. It also discusses properties of characters, collation and sorting, line breaking rules and Unicode encodings. The final four chapters cover more advanced material, such as programming to support Unicode. You simply can't afford to be without the nuggets of valuable information detailed in Unicode Explained .

Kurzfassung: This IBM Redbooks publication supersedes both: IBM TotalStorage: Introduction to SAN Routing, SG24-7119-00 Implementing the IBM TotalStorage Multiprotocol Routers, SG24-7246-00 The rapid spread and adoption of production storage area networks (SANs) has fuelled the need for multiprotocol routers. The routers provide improved scalability, security, and manageability by enabling devices in separate SAN fabrics to communicate without merging fabrics into a single, large SAN fabric. This capability enables clients to initially deploy separate SAN solutions at the departmental and data center levels. Then, clients can consolidate these separate solutions into large enterprise SAN solutions as their experience and requirements grow and change. Alternatively, multiprotocol routers can help to connect existing enterprise SANs for a variety of reasons. For instance, the introduction of Small Computer System Interface over IP (iSCSI) provides for the connection of low-end, low-cost hosts to enterprise SANs. The use of an Internet Protocol (IP) in the Fibre Channel (FC) environment provides for resource consolidation and disaster recovery planning over long distances. And the use of FC-FC routing services provides connectivity between two or more fabrics without having to merge them into a single SAN. This book targets storage network administrators, system designers, architects, and IT professionals who sell, design, or administer SANs. It introduces you to the products, concepts, and technology in the IBM System Storage SAN Routing portfolio. This book shows the features of each product and examples of how you can deploy and use them.

Kurzfassung: The IBM System i family, which encompasses the IBM AS/400, eServer iSeries, eServer i5, and System i5, has a successful 24-year history of satisfying hundreds of customers' requirements, thanks to its developers. DB2 for i5/OS, also known as DB2 Universal Database for iSeries, is deeply rooted in the architecture and heritage of the AS/400 and its predecessor System/38. The database has undergone significant changes over the years to maintain its competitive advantage including fundamental changes to the structure of the database to compete successfully in the industry. In doing so, IBM Rochester launched a project to re-engineer and redesign important components of the database. The redesigned components were architected using object-oriented design concepts and then implemented using object-oriented implementation techniques. The query optimizer was one of the key components that was redesigned. This IBM Redbooks publication gives a broad understanding of the architectural changes of the database concerning the query optimizer. It explains the following concepts: The architecture of the query optimizer The data access methods used by the query optimizer The Statistics Manager included in V5R2 The feedback message changes of the query optimizer Some performance measurements Changes and enhancements made in V5R4 The objective of this book is to help you minimize any SQL or database performance issues when upgrading to OS/400 V5R2 or V5R3 or to IBM i5/OS V5R4. Prior to reading this book, you should have some knowledge of database performance and query optimization.

Kurzfassung: This IBM Redbooks publication is about using Java on z/OS to develop, deploy, and run stand-alone and batch applications. Java has certainly become the most popular programming language, and it is the language of choice for many enterprise applications today. This is the result of many advancements in the language itself as well as related technologies and tools that enable users to develop and run cost-effective, scalable, high-performance solutions. IBM System z servers provide comprehensive support for deploying Java applications while providing the traditional quality of service, advanced security, and scalability that users have come to expect from this server family. IBM System zApplication Assist Processors (zAAP) further enhance the ability of an enterprise to implement complex and heavy workload applications on System z in a cost-effective and reliable manner. There are many technical and business-oriented documents that describe the value of running J2EE applications on System z using WebSphere Application Server. However, less attention has been given to running stand-alone Java applications. This book shows how Java can leverage the power of IBM System z to run stand-alone and batch applications. This book is a technical guideline for Java application developers who do not have prior experience with the System z operating environment, as well as System z operators who are new to the world of Java because of the inevitable transition occurring in the IT industry. Chapters in this book are designed to be self-contained so that they can be read in any order. Please note that the additional material referenced in the text is not available from IBM.

Kurzfassung: This IBM Redbooks publication provides IMS performance monitoring and tuning information. This book differs from previous IMS performance and tuning IBM Redbooks in that there is less emphasis on the internal workings of IMS and more information about why and how certain options can affect the performance of IMS. Most of the information in the previous book IMS Version 7 Performance Monitoring and Tuning Update, SG24-6404, is still valid, and in most cases, continues to be valid in any future versions of IMS. This book is not an update or rewrite but instead attempts to be more of a guide than a reference. As such, the team gathered experiences and data from actual production environments as well as from IBM benchmarks and solicited input from experts in as many areas as possible. You should be able to find valuable new information and perhaps validate things you might have questioned. Hardware and software characteristics are constantly changing, but hopefully the information that you find here provides a basis to help you react to change and to keep your IMS running efficiently. In this book, we introduce methods and tools for monitoring and tuning IMS systems, and in addition to IMS TM and DB system-wide performance considerations, we dedicate separate chapters for application considerations, IMS and DB2 interoperability, the Parallel Sysplex environment, and On Demand considerations.

Kurzfassung: Successfully implementing a service-oriented architecture (SOA) requires applications and infrastructure that can support the SOA principles. Applications can be enabled by creating service interfaces to existing or new functions hosted by the applications. The service interfaces should be accessed using an infrastructure that can route and transport service requests to the correct service provider. As organizations expose more and more functions as services, it is vitally important that this infrastructure supports the management of SOA on an enterprise scale. This IBM Redbooks publication looks at how IBM messaging products support an SOA environment. In particular, it looks at WebSphere Application Server, WebSphere Enterprise Service Bus, WebSphere MQ, and WebSphere Message Broker in an SOA environment. We discuss how they support SOA, compare the potential ESB product implementations, and show examples of building the infrastructure and creating mediations.

Kurzfassung: DB2 for z/OS takes advantage of data sharing technology in a z Parallel Sysplex to provide applications with full concurrent read and write access to shared DB2 data. Data sharing allows users on multiple DB2 subsystems, members of a data sharing group, to share a single copy of the DB2 catalog, directory, and user data sets. Data sharing provides improvements to availability and capacity without impacting existing applications. The road to data sharing might seem arduous to a novice user, but once you have started to learn terminology and gain basic understanding, things will become much easier. This IBM Redbooks publication is meant to facilitate your journey towards data sharing by providing a cookbook approach to the main tasks in enabling data sharing and workload balancing. It does not have all the answers, because it is a brief summary of a large field of knowledge, but it contains the key elements and it points you in the right direction to get more details. Throughout this document we assume that your sysplex environment is set up and a DB2 subsystem exists at a currently supported level.

Kurzfassung: When Microsoft releases Windows Vista, the new operating system will support applications that employ graphics now used by computer games--clear, stunning, and active. The cornerstone for building these new user interfaces is XAML ("Zammel"), the XML-based markup language that works with Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Vista's new graphics subsystem. An acronym for Extensible Application Markup Language, XAML offers a wealth of new controls and elements with exciting capabilities, including animation and rendering of 3D graphics. Windows developers are already jazzed by the possibilities of using XAML for fixed and flow format documents like PDF and HTML, 2D and 3D vector-based graphics, form development, animation, audio and video, transparent layering, and a lot more. Many feel that XAML will eliminate the need for multiple file formats or plug-ins (read: Flash), while lowering development costs and reducing time to market. The problem is, most developers don't know XAML. While it is fairly easy to understand, you still need a quick guide to bring you up to speed before Vista's release, and that's where this book's simple, no nonsense approach comes in. XAML in a Nutshell covers everything necessary to design user interfaces and .NET applications that take advantage of WPF. Prerequisites such as Microsoft's new unified build system, MSBuild, and core XAML constructs and syntax--including shortcuts--are all presented with plenty of examples to get you started. The Core XAML Reference section lets you dig even deeper into syntax rules and attributes for all XAML elements with a series of quick-reference chapters. This section divides XAML elements into logical categories of elements, controls, shapes and geometry, layout, animations, and transformations for easy reference. XAML in a Nutshell helps you learn, firsthand, how to use this XML-based markup language to implement the new generation of user interface graphics. As one reviewer noted, "Strong code examples and an efficient, conversational style take the tedium out of learning XAML and make the subject understandable--even interesting."
