Abstract: The volume has been set up in a friendly manner, and tries to propose Meteorology through images, focusing its attention on the description of the clouds, ethereal presences that almost always provide us precise information about the incoming weather. There are ten kinds of clouds, numerous species and even more numerous varieties, and each of them forms in the sky not by chance but as a consequence of a very precise physical and thermodynamic mechanism that is there developing in the atmosphere. Clouds can be considered the leading actresses of this volume and for each of them the author tried to identify the link between these mechanisms of formation and the probable future evolution of weather conditions. In the book, the most recurring type of cloud is the Cumulonimbus, also called “the storm cloud”, since it generates the most intense and devastating meteorological phenomena, such as storms, tornadoes, hailstorms, etc. After having extensively dealt with the phenomena associated with Cumulonimbus, the final part of the volume provides some useful insights to understand the response dynamics of the territory under the stresses induced by extreme rainfall events and, lastly, to identify planning territorial strategies able to reduce the impact on the ground. From this point of view, Green Infrastructures have a considerable potential, in particular if they are considered a key element in an overall plan of adaptation to the complex evolutive dynamics of climate change

Abstract: From the reorganization of the Archive of the Society of Naturalists in Naples, some drawings of insects and plants by Domenico Cirillo (1739-1799) reappear after two hundred and twenty years, fortunately escaped the fury of the Sanfedisti when they sacked and destroyed his house. They were confused among the papers of his pupil and friend Filippo Cavolini (1756-1810). Carefully studied in this volume, they are for the first time made known to scholars and admirers of the great physician and naturalist, who died for his ideals of justice and for the renewal of the old regime society. In addition to contributions documenting the contacts that Cirillo had with artists and printers, the volume also includes information on the costs he incurred for the publication of his books, to which is added the history that occurred to the manuscript papers of Filippo Cavolini and its descendants, the family De Mellis, which merged into the Society of Naturalists

Abstract: This volume presents the outcomes of the three third-year Design Studios conducted within the bachelor's degree program in Science of Architecture (Department of Architecture - University of Naples "Federico II"). The place chosen to situate the different design strategies developed by each course has been Sanità, a central area that developed as a periphery of the adjacent city centre, a major example of a logic of systematic fragmentation and discontinuity that seems to have affirmed as a principle of a way of urbanizing the urban tissue of the city of Naples. Through essays and projects, this volume illustrates the results of a didactic approach that is functional to the needs of an open and inclusive School of Architecture, seeking at the same time – in the personal expertise of each teacher – which methods, processes, and ways of teaching the project can delineate different cultural horizons in favour of a plurality of views on the architecture of the city

[English]: The volume "The University is community" tells through images the experience of the community psychology students of the Psychological Sciences and Techniques course of the Federico II University of Naples, offering a cross-section of emotions, questions and choices. Italian universities are facing the Covid 19 pandemic by scaffolding their students in virtual classrooms. This photo-booklet highlights the community psychology methods and strategies which witness the students’ strains and strengths. Forced confinement has highlighted the role of the reflective and interactive dimension in the construction of knowledge and scientific acquisition. Abstract: Within the vast Ovidian bibliography, taking the opportunity provided by the celebrations of the Bimillenary of the poet's death (17-2017), the volume aims at offering a useful tool to deepen, in a diachronic and synchronic perspective, not only the multifarious virtues of Ovid's poetry, his extraordinary Alexandrian ars, the stages of his Reception starting from antiquity, but also - if not above all - an undisputed and in some ways unreachable quality of the Ovidian language and style: the disruptive icastic strength, the ability to employ, like few others, the images in the construction of the poetic text, of its narrative plots, of its elegant refinement, of its effectiveness in the reader’s Reception. The versatility of Ovid's poetry, the transversality of its readings and of its possible reuse throughout the history of western culture are confirmed by the coexistence, within the volume, of contributions ranging from classical to modern and contemporary literatures, from archeology to Art history, from philosophy to music

Abstract: “Reason” and “rationality” are, today, problematic notions: considered for a long time, in the history of Western thought, as distinctive traits of man and of the Euro-American civilization, from a certain point onwards they have been called into question and ripped apart by the crisis and the malaise of the latter. In the light of the most recent controversies and reflections on the subject developed over the first half of the 20th century, this book aims to riegnite the debate on “ratio” with the intention of highlighting – through a series of “case studies” – the fine texture of the multiple meanings and uses of the notion of reason, but also to question the different “eras” of reason by attempting to reconstruct its “history”. The essays included in this volume, therefore, contextualise and analyse the meanings and ambiguities of the term “ratio” and its derivatives within the framework of the many discussions that have marked its history from the earliest modernity, when the concept assumed new configurations with respect to the uses attested in Ancient and Medieval thought, to the contemporary debate

Abstract: Another step of the Trotula Project created by the University Federico II’s Equal Opportunity Committee: In December 2019, the National Congress brought together the University Equal Opportunity Committees from all over Italy. Now we are publishing the Transcripts in a period of the COVID-19 emergency, during which Diversity has appeared as a crucial theme. We know it is just a little step on a long path, but we are happy to introduce many significant, sensitive and passionate voices of a mindful Community that dialogues with its territory on culture of differences today and while thinking to the future

Abstract: Are we made of spirit or body? Or are we a «third thing», as Nietzsche said almost 140 years ago? The question is not trivial. If, on the one hand, God’s death does not allow us to trust in the immortal soul that takes away from the torments of the flesh to be destined for final judgement, on the other hand, a mechanistic scientific vision reduces everything to the body, understood as a pure piece of matter, impoverishing our vital experience. Beyond these two moments, Nietzsche intuits a space that remains to be explored, which is both physical and moral, biological and social. This book continues and deepens a research work on Nietzsche started by Papparo over 25 years ago, first with La passione senza nome (1995), then with Qualcosa del corpo (2016), taking in analysis not only the texts of the German philosopher, but his most recent interpretations. Not only Heidegger (and the French philosophy of the second half of the twentieth century: Bataille, Deleuze or Derrida), but some “friend” thinkers: Stiegler, Masullo, Giametta, Moroncini, Mazzarella, Vitiello, Giugliano... An incessant comparison that gives this book the peculiar physiognomy of a book written on the margins of the many texts examined
Abstract: Siamo fatti di spirito o di corpo?

Abstract: Joseph Petzoldt was Ernst Mach’s and Richard Avenarius’ main pupil, as well as the primary source for the habit to reunite these two thinkers under the label of “empiriocriticists”. Petzoldt developed Mach’s and Avenarius’ ideas in a philosophical system aiming at overcoming the dualism and agnosticism of the Kantian approach that was typical of German scientific circles in the late 1800s. Petzoldt’s thought is based on three pillars: his radical empiricism, according to which sensory experience is not appearance but reality; the Eindeutigkeit principle, which states that all that happens is univocally determined and thus necessary; the principle of the tendency to stability, which governs the evolution of the universe, including the living organisms and the brain. On these bases, Petzoldt arrives at his “relativistic positivism”, according to which every individual experiences reality from his point of view, but – since knowledge processes are determined by the functioning of the brain – this does not preclude an objective knowledge of the world. Petzoldt was also one of the leading figures of the debate on the philosophical interpretation of Einstein’s relativity. He believed that relativity was a consequence and a confirmation of E. Mach gnoseological approach and thus of relativistic positivism

Abstract: The Milites Baroli censused in the Catalogus Baronum constitute the beginning of this study on the formation, characteristics and evolution about lordship powers in the Ofanto Valley and particularly in the city of Barletta between the Norman and early Angevin age. Through a focused and complex rereading of the existing documents, the volume analyzes the structure of the Barletta society with particular attention to its military and political élite and to the relationship with central power. Structured during the XII century consequently the intervention of the Norman crown, for the southern sovereigns the milites of Barletta organized and controlled the Ofanto Valley, favoring the unification of the Apulian center with civitas and the bishopric of Canne. Strongly put to the test in the secular relationship with the crown, the élite of the Apulian city is here probed through the study of prosopographic profiles and the pervasiveness of the power used by main local military families. In this point of view, is analyzed both the relationship established from time to time with the ecclesiastical foundations of Outremer and with the Holy Land, and the quality of the intervention in the main places of political and religious power and the characteristics of supremacy. In that sense, particular attention is focused on the dynamics of the conflict, hidden in the city society, as a basic element for understanding the inner workings of power in the local and supralocal context. In this way, the volume is part of the debate on the social and political structure of the cities in the south of Italy and on the aristocratic powers in the Kingdom of Sicily, of which Barletta is a complex and very interesting case

Abstract: Florus’ work has always been regarded as a summary of Livy’s broader narrative, reorganized around a “biological” conception of history to become more effective. The design of his historical account, however, is the result of a series of strategies outlined by the author himself in his praefatio. There Florus reveals his methodology to the reader by declaring that he intends to operate like “those who paint the regions of the earth.” My analysis of this work shows that Florus sacrifices the accuracy of historical information in order to present the Roman history from the origins to the Augustan age as a coherent trajectory that justifies the Empire. On the one hand, this path is made “visible” through the use of an “evolutionary” narrative pattern, characterized by the transition between different aetates; on the other hand, it can be defined as “geographical,” for it mirrors the Roman imperialistic expansion. The only break in this linear narrative is the account of the civil wars from the age of the Gracchi onward, recounted all together in Book 2 for the sake of clarity. In this case Florus employs a new strategy, that shatters the chronological arrangement of the material to privilege the discussion of agonizing ethical considerations. This monograph also examines the stylistic choices adopted by Florus throughout his narrative. The use of the metaphor and the direct intervention of the author, who comments on particular events or characters, inserting questions and interjections, create an original synthesis of history and rhetoric that aims at gaining the reader’s approval. Florus’ resorting to techniques commonly employed in declamations speaks to the artistic value of his work

Abstract: "Administering the foreigner" is the title of a large research program of whom this volume is part. The chapters use a wide range of sources, and offer a sort of survey of the available documentation; for example: ancient regime censuses, matrimonial acts, traveler memoirs, registers of guest-houses and other reception centers, passports and other registration and travel documents, such as laissez passer, safe conducts, security and verification cards. In this long-lasting perspective, the theme of mobility highlights the relationships, tensions and negotiations between individuals, communities and state and local powers, around the issues of identifying people and ensuring the coexistence between different cultures and religions

[English]:This volume deals with the problem of the reception of elitism in the United States in the period between 1920 and 1956, identifying the protagonists, the phases, and the themes that characterized it. After introducing the fundamental principles of the theory of the elites, the first part of the study reconstructs the debate that it aroused beyond the Atlantic. The second part examines the original American reworking of the elitist lesson, concentrating the analysis on the works of the authors most strongly influenced by it: Joseph A. Schumpeter, Harold D. Lasswell, Charles W. Mills. In this way, the study aims to show how Italian elitism contributed in a meaningful way to the elaboration of democratic pluralism and the construction of American political-cultural hegemony in the second post-war period

Abstract: International lecturers and academics address issues centred on the fundamental role played by the urban centres and port poles of Adriatic Puglia and the Tyrrhenian Sea in ancient and modern history for the development of Mediterranean civilization. The common denominator of the themes tackled is therefore the urban historical landscape, outlined through the gaze of the most varied disciplines - from the history of art, architecture and the city to urban historical iconography and cartography, from archaeology to economic history, to that of building materials and their technological and chromatic use - drawing on many, and in more than one case unpublished, documentary and iconographic sources. A contribution of ideas in the common objective of knowledge and enhancement of the landscape, urban and architectural environment of those historic centers within the current debate on the fate of cultural heritage in Italy. For the territory of Gallipoli and Salento, a valuable tool for the identification of the most appropriate strategies for the exploitation of its recognized beauty, not separated from traditional hospitality

Abstract: According to the European Landscape Convention, signed in Florence on 20 October 2000, the landscape is the outcome of the relationship between local communities and their territories, as a result of the social culture that collective behaviors substantiate to build identities. Aware that everyone has an active role in shaping landscapes, the volume addresses some key aspects of the theme with a specialized but transversal approach. It is paired by the reflections of schoolteachers, who have implemented initiatives with students of Campania schools aimed at bringing them closer to their territories and to make them aware of the active role they have in its transformation. The origin of this symbiosis is the Training Project “Landscape from everyone – Landscape for everyone. Training and education for the awareness of new generations” developed and implemented by the local group of the University of Naples Federico II of the UNISCAPE (European Network of Universities for the Implementation of the European Landscape Convention) Association and the Regional School Office of Campania

Abstract: The railway from Naples to Nocera with a side branch to Castellammare, whose project was approved in 1836 and which was completed in 1844, represents the first and the most significant stage of the construction of the Bourbon railway infrastructure. The absolute novelty of the enterprise, a work of public utility entrusted in concession to the French engineer Armand Bayard de la Vingtrie, led to the development of new and pressing issues, which concern not only the physical dimension of the Vesuvian coast and its new structure, but also important matters of economy, law, administration, archaeological protection, as well as infrastructure and territory promotion issues. The volume, through the research and comparison of different archival and documentary sources, is intended to reread the history of the first Bourbon railway by bringing together the many aspects that characterized its design, construction and use up to the Unification of Italy. From this study emerges a perspective on the Vesuvian landscape and on its multiple and complex components, integrated in the new perception, intermittent and cursory, offered by the moving train

Abstract: Divided into three sections: the existential analytics between neokantism, phenomenology and hermeneutics; ethics, praxis, politics starting from Being and Time; confrontations, deepening, perspectives, this collective volume, inspired by "a hermeneutics of Sachlichkeit", tries to offer a balance on the actuality and unactuality of existential analytics ninety years after publication of Being and Time. Authors from different contexts present the existential analytics in the historical and theoretical context of its first formulation, question the complex problem of a possible praxis or a possible ethics within Heideggerian ontology and measure the impact of existential analytics on contemporary thinkers. It emerges how, despite all the problems and open questions, "the debt of contemporary thought to Heidegger is great and how important it is to preserve the legacy of his thought and the tradition in which it is placed, beyond any false alternative between naive apologetics and radical criticism"

Abstract: This volume is the outcome of a conference on the work of Christopher Bayly held in Naples on March 2016. At less than one year from his untimely death, the convenors called on a group of specialists in several disciplinary areas, on which Bayly has left his enduring mark, to collaborate on a first survey of the rich and complex scientific legacy of the English historian. Each essay focuses on one of the extraordinary succession of great works by which he pioneered innovative approaches throughout his academic career. The collection as a whole provides therefore an account of Bayly’s foremost contributions to the different scholarly fields in which he made repeated breakthroughs, over a period of five decades, on some of the most advanced research fronts of international historiography: the local roots of Indian nationalism, the transition from pre-colonial to colonial India and the role of indigenous society in the establishment of European domination, the nature and limits of colonial power, the rise of the Second British Empire, the history of globalization and the nineteenth-century turn towards planetary modernity, the transregional development of liberalism and nationalism. The common aim of the authors is to highlight the stages of the path through which Bayly emerged, at the beginnings of the 2000s, as a key figure in the current revival and renewal of world history

Abstract: “The drug: research, development and application in therapy” is an in-depth study on the Research and Development process that a drug performs from the moment it is designed up to its practical use. When a molecule is considered suitable for a medicine, a long process is activated which has as its goal the creation of a new therapeutic tool and its approval for marketing. A path marked by the strict observance of regulations and laws that have evolved over time in step with scientific and technological progress. A path that however has often been determined also by tragic events following damaging adverse reactions that have triggered processes of revision of the norms and experimental protocols. This book starts with a summary on the history of Western pharmacology, written to allow the reader to understand the circumstances that have been the background to those dynamics through which the Research and Development process has gradually consolidated. An important part of the book is dedicated to some aspects that are crucial in the normative universe in which the drug is placed, such as the advanced therapies and new approaches for clinical research. The authors also focused on the prescriptions of off-label drugs and on the issues of pharmacoutilization and pharmacovigilance, two disciplines that, in a few years, have become increasingly influential in the present and future perspectives, not only of the pharmaceutical sciences but of the entire society

Abstract: The volume contains the proceedings of the conference on the subject of relational ontology, which involved a group of scholars of classical German philosophy with the aim of explaining the reasons, drawing inspiration and categories from the ideal and conceptual constellation of that age of culture. The idea from which they make the contributions is that for relational ontology we can understand a theory on the structure of reality (onto-logic), attentive to the development of the explanatory and normative potential of the category of reciprocity. The contributions thus define a path that, starting from Kant and the question of a unity and duplicity of the ego, passing through the consideration of the Fichtian relational ontology and the idea of a constitution of identity responding to the appeal from the other (on this theme a dialogue Ricoeur / Fichte is also staged), it touches on the notion of natural law of Schelling, to arrive at the Hegelian construction of an ontology and logic of the relationship, which can be found in the very notion of civil society, and finally to reading in a 'materialistic' key of Kantian transcendental idealism, in relation to the notion of reciprocal action

Abstract: Associationism is a phenomenon has characterized the history of Ponticelli from the last years of 19th century until today. Since the end of the Second World War, for about three decades, the Italian Communist Party and, generally, the Left had a hegemonic role in the civil life of this Naples district of ancient farming and working-class traditions. In this context, in 1974, the House of People was born, which became the symbolic place of Neapolitan communists and the center of cultural initiatives with national resonance. Conferences, art exhibitions, theatrical and educational workshops were organized and directed by: «committed teachers», «avant-garde directors» and «aesthetic operators», that is, by intellectuals with an organic civil life reform project of the geographical and social suburbs. The crisis of Left Parties has led to a progressive rarefaction of the House of People’s activities, but not to the end of its spirit, as shown by the Arci Movie Association. The association, born in 1990, is still engaged in the diffusion of film culture inside and outside Ponticelli. In this book it is possible to trace facts and people of this recent cultural and political season, which has suddenly faded in the collective memory, with the goal to contain its disintegration also manifested in the loss of documentary tracks

[English]:The idea of a convention on the institution, as well as on the historical, educational and scientific contribution of the Law Faculty of the Federico II University arises from the need to adequately focus on the importance assumed by this institution, even outside the boundaries of Southern Italy, in the development of both legal knowledge and practices. From the greetings of the Rector and of the national forensic councils and of the Notariat, going through a surprising reflection by the director of the department, the volume contains in the first part the Acts of the meeting held on 12 November 2015 in the Aula Pessina. To follow, revisited and integrated, the presentation of the materials of the conference, where - with a detailed report on the Deans that followed the Faculty guide - the testimonies of the building and urban renewal of Naples starting from the second nineteenth century are flanked by the most relevant events of the time and the most significant local achievements

Abstract: [Italiano]:Nel ricco campo di studi sull’epica flavia, “Tremefacta quies. [English]: This research is built on three different topics, which are interwoven ("spazi di transito"). The first one deals with sleep, sleeplesness and dreams in Statius' Thebaid; secondly, Silius Italicus' treatment of the same themes are analyzed; thirdly, Onorato Occioni's translation of Punica 1 in 'endecasillabi sciolti' in XIXth Century in Italy are compared to the translation by Cesare Beligoni, with the conclusion of a certain amount of plagiarism. It is an original study, text-oriented and innovative, which gives a contribution to the rich scenario of Flavian studies worldwide

Abstract: More than a reconstruction of the coordinates of his research, the purpose of this collection is the testimony of a community that approached Giuseppe Acocella, recognizing the prestige of his magisterium. His interests, so diversified, would not have lent themselves to an exegetical reconstruction: rather, we have drawn from the"alive" of his reflections, to the extent that he was able to inspire everyone's research. Moral philosopher, philosopher of the law, philosopher of politics, he was formed starting from the teaching of Capograssi and preferred to direct his reflection on the Lebenswelt, rather than on that formal dimension that would have allowed us a dogmatic reading. Starting from individual inclinations, we wanted to testify to the closeness and significance that Giuseppe Acocella's teaching has played in the search for each one: the topics addressed, which question civil life in its formal and material aspects, reflect the multifaceted tension that only a masterful thinker can inspire

Abstract: Literature in Laboratory is a collection of 12 Pamphlets published by the Stanford Literary Lab under the direction of its founder, Franco Moretti, from 2011 to 2017. Already translated into several languages, Moretti’s Literary Lab Pamphlets have opened up a new chapter in the fields of literary and digital studies by creating a new way of critically approaching texts. Moretti and his group of co-authors focused their experiments on the basic element by which literature is composed – namely, the language –, and conducted deep investigations on existing databases and unassisted corpus aiming at defining both a theoretical method and a precise technical procedure to be applied to literature. The essays presented in this book approach literature ranging from micro-linguistic dimensions to the larger scales of literary forms and genres through a series of quantitative measurements in order to increase, improve and develop a more precise understanding of ltheory and history of iterature

Abstract: Through the correspondence between Michele Amari (1806-1889) and Raffaele Starrabba (1834-1906), the volume provides a glimpse of the historiographical panorama of the Italian nineteenth century in the crucial period that followed the birth of the Nation. The correspondence also illuminates the figure of Baron Starrabba, who played a fundamental role in the local archival administration and was the founder, with Isidoro Carini, of the Sicilian Society for the History and of its periodical, the "Archivio Storico Siciliano"

Abstract: The dramatic involvement of the Tsarist Empire in the First World War marks a turning point in the history of Russia and its surrounding areas. The dynamics triggered by the challenge of total mobilization gave rise to political, social, economic and cultural transformations destined to have a profound and prolonged impact on Europe and the whole world during the 20-th century. The studies and the researches collected in this volume explore key themes of the crisis that hit the imperial space: the patriotic culture and the representation of the enemy in war propaganda; the interweaving of war effort and national issues in the imperial peripheries; the intensified competition between the multiethnic empires in the context of total war; the breakthrough achieved by nationalisms during the 1917 revolutions. Special attention is also devoted to the analysis of the international historiographical trends that have emerged in the last quarter of a century and which have redefined the interpretation of the period 1914-1921 / 22

Abstract: The complex life of Frederick of Aragon, second-born of Ferdinando I of Naples, is analyzed through a work of decomposition and interpretation of the data that concern to the political, cultural and ideological physiognomy of a character considered marginal in the the dramatic Italian events of the end of the XV century. Frederick represents instead, in his formation and his roles, the extraordinary experiment that was the Aragonese system of government, and the meaning of a whole political civilization: the Renaissance of the specula principis, of the political art, that can show once more the measure of its inexhaustible originality through the reconstruction of lives as this, transversals, uniques and deeply absorbed in the practice of the power

Abstract: Cities and all the activities carried out in an urban environment significantly influence climate change causes but, at the same time, they are greatly affected by them. For these reasons, urban areas not only represent one of the problems, but also the main field of application of intervention strategies to be developed in order to mitigate the negative effects of climate change. Among the strategies to contrast climate change, the adaptation to its environmental effects has been pushed right into the background in scientific debate, mainly due to the difficulty experienced in transferring urban climatology into methods that can be easily implemented by planners to draw up land use plan. This volume is an attempt to strengthen the cultural background of urban planner, establishing solid connections with urban climatology, in order to build a new language, able to consider the relationships between urban morphology and climate change adaptation strategies to be implemented

Abstract: This volume draws upon the scholarship on the international trade between the Roman Empire and Eastern regions such as Arabia, Ethiopia and India. Such trade has been often described by ancient sources as a flourishing and very expensive one. More in detail, the book focuses on the life and the development of the ports on the Red Sea, controlled by Rome. These ports acted for centuries as international hubs, linking points between West and East, and they were the gates though which the eastern merchandise would reach the Roman markets. Keeping these remote settlements alive required a big effort on the part of the imperial administration, and some degree of planning to choose how and when to invest in the area. So, over the centuries, the geography of such ports changed dramatically. Most works published so far have explained such changes in terms of decline and economic shrinking, due to the “late antique phase” of the Roman Empire. This monograph looks for a different explanation and stretches the analysis into the late antique period, showing hot it was not a period of decline and economic recession, but rather of reorganization. The volume aims finally to reach a new and more full level of understanding of the Roman economic policy in the Red Sea between the first century BC and the sixth AD

Abstract: The volume collects essays dedicated to the Phenomenology of the spirit of G.W.F. Hegel and to some of its main interpretations. It gathers critical essays on the Hegelian masterpiece and studies on Hegel’s influences on authors such as Marx, Gentile, Heidegger, Kojève, Paci, Lacan and Brandom. These contributions investigate some categorical nodes that have marked ensuing ethical, theoretical, philosophical-political and later psychoanalytic reflections: dialectic, culture, negation, desire, body, phenomenon, recognition. Therefore, this collection does not intend to mark a specific interpretation of the Hegelian text. Rather, the authors share the effort to illustrate in actu exercito the possibilities given by these two extremes – the text and its interpretation – in which later philosophical culture has moved. Through this movement the Phenomenology of the spirit continues to produce Philosophy, intended as an opportunity and an instrument for the understanding of "one's own time with thought". In addition to the editors, the volume hosts contributions from: Stefania Achella, Rossella Bonito Oliva, Alessio Calabrese, Teresa Caporale, Alessandro De Cesaris, Giuseppe Antonio Di Marco, Gianluca Garelli, Roberto Morani, Anna Pia Ruoppo

Abstract: The celebration of the 794th anniversary of the founding of Federico II University represents the occasion to give back to the city one of its symbolic places, the Courtyard of the Statues in the Monumental Cloister of the House of the Savior. This architectural complex is famous for its sumptuous porch in Piperno stone, for the statues of the illustrious figures of the past, for the eighteenth-century sundials, for the great clock, finally restored today. Years of renovation work had prevented the full use of a building that for centuries has hosted one of the most extraordinary ancient book collections in Italy and that since the nineteenth century has been the scene of the intellectual development of generations of students. After the Unification of Italy a pantheon was created in the Monumental University Cloister with the statues of illustrious men of the past and present, to exhort new generations to the high values of ethics and scientific research. Choosing this venue to celebrate the foundation of one of the oldest universities in Europe means to collect the legacy of "an extraordinary past" in these complex times, as Gaetano Manfredi writes in his preface, "to highlight the beacon of critical thinking in the globalised growing from our strong historical roots"

Abstract: After centuries of submission to the foreign rulers, between the eighteenth and the nineteenth century the South of Italy took a leading role in the European political landscape, on one hand absorbing in its culture the huge heritage of values and knowledge of those civilizations, on the other hand appealing to its own scientists, intellectuals and technicians’ fervid minds to achieve relevant international goals in the field of the public and urbanistic works. Kings, such as Charles of Bourbon and Ferdinand II, were the main promoters of this ransom and of the achieved primacies. Rummaging through the iconographic documents passed on their desks, nowadays rearranged in the Neapolitan National library Palatine collection and consulting the volumes of the Royal library, it turns out a great turmoil of ideas and projects, but also the confirmation of the large amount of potentialities unfortunately not completely expressed by the Neapolitan State: it occurred, it should be said, not only as a consequence of the end of the kingdom, but also as a result of the specific political responsibility of that dynasty: Unfortunately Italy’s unification didn’t enhance the heritage of these experiences, nor it rectified the structural inadequacies of the former regime; on the contrary the new State often contributed to increase them, stifling a socio-economic promise of development still today unrealized

Abstract: The book illustrates the reconstruction of the system of granting Neapolitan citizenship during the sixteenth century. In particular, the role played by the ‘Regia Camera della Sommaria’, the highest tax magistrature of the Kingdom of Naples, in the evaluation of requests and in the assignment of the citizenship licenses, which allowed access to the substantial tax and jurisdictional privileges of the capital city. The policy of the Spanish government with respect to these privileges is based on prudence and attention to the political and social balance of a fundamental and complex capital as Naples is. The ‘Sommaria’, however, manages in establishing a system of control and government of privileges, which makes the Neapolitan citizenship for a large part a product of the state; also subtracting expertise in the field to the city's municipal government

Abstract: Opioid and Cannabis in Pain Control is the result of studies performed by the Pharmacy Department and the “Centro Interdipartimentale di Ricerca in Farmacoeconomia e Farmacoutilizzazione” (CIRFF) of the University of Naples, “Federico II”. This book is aimed to those who work in a pharmacy and who, scholars, teachers or students, are interested in delve into the issue. The text analyzes different topics with an interdisciplinary approach. A large part is devoted to the chemical and pharmacological aspects related to this topic. Subsequently, the text focuses the theme, still very debated, of using opioids and Cannabis in therapy through an exhaustive analysis of the entire existing legislation: from the first laws promulgated by the Kingdom of Italy until the last ministerial circulars by Italian republic. Finally yet importantly, an important part of the book focuses on medical and therapeutic interpretation with regard to the effects on pain control, where opioids and Cannabis are not only a fruitful frontier of research, but also a consolidated and effective tool to counteract some types of pain

Abstract: This volume proposes a rich corpus of papers about the ‘Other City’, a subject only few times dealt with, but worthy of all our attention: it imposes itself on the scene of international modern and contemporary historiography for its undeniable topicality. Throughout history, the city has always had to deal with social ‘otherness’, i.e. with class privileges and, consequently, with discrimination and marginalization of minorities, of the less well-off, of foreigners, in short, with the differences in status, culture, religion. So that the urban fabric has ended up structuring itself also in function of those inequalities, as well as of the strategic places for the exercise of power, of the political, military or social control, of the spaces for imprisonment, for the sanitary isolation or for the ‘temporary’ remedy to the catastrophes. From the first portraits of cities, made and diffused at the beginning of the fifteenth century for political exaltation purposes or for religious propaganda and for devotional purposes, which often, through increasingly refined graphic techniques, distort or even deny the true urban image, we reach, at the dawn of contemporary history, the new meaning given by scientific topography and new methods of representation; these latter aimed at revealing the structure and the urban landscape in their objectivity, often unexpected for who had known the city through the filter of ‘regime’ iconography. The representation of the urban image still shows the contradictions of a community that sometimes includes and even exalts the diversities, other times rejects them, showing the unease of a difficult integration

Abstract: This work intends to collect the results of studies and researches which contribute to strengthening the knowledge of the area and in documenting all these shades that converge on qualifying in a cultural entity as collective heritage: the single heritages, through knowledge can obtain in this way not only an adequate representation. It is thus not by chance, that this book is dedicated to the city of Naples, a city with a strong and complex identity, with classical roots, full of conflict and eager to confrontations; the artistic and cultural heritage that this city preserves, almost a catalogue of the entire Mediterranean civilization, of which it is the symbol, is made of great testimonies, but also of small fragments, of layers and mixtures, which together converge on the culture of ‘making a system’ aimed at the creation of a territory network, at the bringing closer and understanding of single cultural identities, at a best mutual perception

Abstract: Diffractions. 1994: Philosophy put to test by Psychoanalysis, namely a changing over the method, better to say a style, of the philosophical discourse which “takes care” of other discourses, coming to aid or to annexe them, just because felt/perceived as deficient from the epistemological point of view, as they are no more than empirical knowledges, and thus in need of a “second foundation”.Beyond this canon, (it is) the experience of the proof of diffraction, with and within the thought itself, which means a mutual “de-construction and re-construction” of knowledges which assay themselves beyond any foolish and pretentious sovereignism. Diffractions. 2018: Psychoanalysis between Kultur and Civilisation, namely the whole of the cultural products; the social patterns; the political and institutional options; the whole of the values and ideologies that shapes the Kultur itself, diffracted by the psychoanalytical stream, beyond any childish “gentry” of Kultur on Civilisation
Abstract: Diffrazioni. Abstract: Conceived as a slow and inexorable path of criticism of the ideology of the bourgeois world, this collection is divided into three sections. The first: Mystification: politics and religion is dedicated to philosophy. It is in the philosophy of his time that Marx found the theoretical tools to develop his critique of the bourgeois, materialistic, dialectical and therefore revolutionary society. In the second section Crisis: reforms and conflicts, Marx's theory becomes a method of analysis of the present, a powerful epistemological apparatus that makes it possible to shed light on the intrinsically contradictory character of contemporary capitalist societies. Finally, the last section: Globalisation: resistance and fights reconstructs Di Marco's approach to the "political" question. Here his interpretation of Marx's work is filtered through the relationship with the tradition of Italian operaism, to which the author recognizes the merit of having placed the accent on revolutionary subjectivity, finding however problematic his progressive estrangement from the dialectical core of Marxism. It is in the need to re-establish the center of the Marxist criticism of reality in the capital-labour conflict that can be identified the thread of the Marxist commitment of Giuseppe Antonio Di Marco, who, convinced of the actuality and usefulness of the Marxist categories, tests them against the contradictions and conflicts of the present time

Abstract: This paper examines the meaning of Carlo Michelstaedter’s judgement on Arthur Schopenhauer, according to which Schopenhauer does not fully accept the consequences of his own system of thought but only makes a «profession of pessimism», in the light of Michelstaedter’s categories of «Persuasion» and «Rhetoric»

Abstract: This volume contains the correspondence of Giuseppe De Blasiis (1832-1914), the first History professor of the Neapolitan University. In his leading role as a 19th century Italian Historiographer, he was responsible for the scientific structure of the Neapolitan Society of National History, of which he was a founding member and later president. His studies on Medieval History, without forgetting those he carried out on the modern age, as well as his vast knowledge of the documentary and bibliographical sources from Naples, made him a privileged spokesman for anyone who wanted to approach the history of southern continental Italy

Abstract: The book focuses on the particular historical-political context of the Kingdom of Naples in the Aragonese period (1442-1503), and explores the variety of languages related to political practice: juridical, literary, artistic, political languages are analyzed in their specificities, but also in their reciprocal osmotic relations. This volume offers a conclusive reflection after a conference organized in Naples, and integrates interdisciplinary perspectives. It tests and refines the hypothesis concerning the gradual development of a complex organism that – through literature, oratory, political treatises, artistic representations and administrative practices – goes in the direction of a “state system”, which still operates under the guidance of sovereignty

Abstract: This volume investigates how historiography became a “profession” from the 13th to the 15th century. As a genre, historiography is difficult to define: inspired by Cicero’s rhetorical rules, humanists were the first to elaborate a specific ars. In doing so, they adapted rhetoric to a new ethical sense of humanitas. Several contributors to this book have already discussed in previous works of theirs the linguistic and rhetorical choices that some important historians made. See, for instance, Tra storiografia e retorica: prospettive nel basso medioevo italiano, ed. M. Zabbia, in «Reti Medievali. Rivista», 19 (2018), especially the papers by Paolo Garbini, Marino Zabbia, and Fulvio Delle Donne. On this occasion, they pay attention to the authors’ direct interventions: their self-representation and reflections on methodological issues reveal a new consciousness, which gradually developed over the centuries. This volume is a part of the PRIN project (the acronym standing for Project of Relevant National Interest) titled “A.L.I.M. (Digital Archive of the Italian Latinity in the Middle Ages: http://www.alim.dfll.univr.it): Practices and theory for computer archiving and philology applied to medieval texts”, which Professor Fulvio Delle Donne coordinates at the University of Basilicata

Abstract: During the nineteenth century, the police control represented, for the European continent, first one of the pivotal components of the international system developed by Metternich and then a function to be reshaped in view of the political crisis due to the events of 1848. In the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, in the aftermath of the French Decade, the police were the focus of an intense reflection, inclined to rethink it beyond the Napoleonic model, whose outcome was not at all obvious. The issues that emerged in this context concerning the nature and limits of police power were destined to remain, in the following decades, the subject of a debate developed in the broader framework of the Italian peninsula. The revolutionary turmoil crossing the Kingdom, in particular following the 1848 revolutions, nevertheless placed in the foreground the urgency of deploying suitable devices and instruments to make the prevailing task of police control a defense of the status quo. Moreover, facing the global scale of the liberal-democratic threat, the Bourbon police rearranged political surveillance in a transnational sense, resorting to secret agents and spies, but also to consuls and diplomats, on the trail of exiles and conspirators in a European and Mediterranean dimension

Abstract: As is well-known to the scholars of European philosophical thinking between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries, the great and ambitious plan of diltheyan criticism of the reason of history condensed in a pond-pink Introduction to the Human Sciences appeared in 1883 only the first volume especially the first two Books. The volume, which we present here, encloses in chronological order the various drafts which, as early as 1880, Dilthey made the work of the second volume of the work, which would have to contain the other four Books, the dedicated ones to the gnoseological, logical and methodological aspects of the philosophical foundation of the so-called sciences of the spirit. An absorbing commitment, which Dilthey will pursue throughout his scientific life, without saving power, will cost him a little in terms of psycho-physical health. In addition to the volume, which besides Breslau drafts also contains the famous Berlin Plan dating back to the early nineties, we also thought it appropriate to include the two dafts of the "Althoff Letter" dating back to mid-1882, as they also contain useful observations on the designed Introduction to the Human Sciences

Abstract: This book focuses on the new anthropology elaborated by the physicians-philosophers of Montpellier in the second half of the 18th century, in particular, Paul-Joseph Barthez (1734-1806). In the wake of scepticism and empiricism, Barthez plans a science of man which rests upon physiological foundations and assimilates the respective resources of medicine and philosophical reflection. This essay first reconstructs the historical-cultural context in which the author’s writings came into being; second, it examines the texts in which its science of man takes shape, by highlighting the methodology, conceptual tools and theoretical implications

Abstract: During the First World War, the parliaments of the states involved in the conflict were, in most cases, forced to drastically limit their activity and were often precluded the possibility of fully exercising their prerogatives. More generally the spaces of freedom granted to the citizens, of which the parliamentary institution was the brightest symbol, shrank dramatically. At the same time, the power of military commands expanded, not only in trenches and on battlefields, but also in many areas of civilian life. However, in the final years of the war, the Parliaments succeeded not only in gradually regaining control, but also in pushing for an extension of their functions, initiating a process that in many states coincided with the transition from a liberal order to a full democratic order. The years of the "long" postwar period were however dense with contradictions. Legislative and executive law often grew together, while in some cases the imperative logic imposed for a long time in wartime re-emerged and consolidated. This volume, which examines several national cases, illustrates some of the ambivalent features of this dramatic phase of European history

Abstract: During the 17th century antiquities of Campania received international attention thanks to the cultural politics of the Bourbon monarchy. The archaeological discoveries were considered part of the political and military success of the King of Naples. After the reunification of Italy, Naples lost its central role as heart of the antiquities collecting and trade as consequence of the marginalization of Naples as economic and political capital of a Kingdom. This process influenced the sectors archaeology, collecting and antiquity market that traditionally reflected the self-representation of the cultural and political élite. This book focuses on the social history of Neapolitan archaeology, that between the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century was strictly connected with the antiquarian market. The research analyses cultural, socio-political and institutional transformations that determinated the promulgation of a specific legislation that limited the exportation of antiquities with the aim to protect the national interest on Cultural Heritage

Abstract: In this second report on crime and security in Naples are addressed questions such as the determinants of a high propensity to illegal behavior although crime appears very risky, the appearance of youth-gangs and their peculiarities with respect to similar experiences in other countries, the correlation between social and economic vulnerability and the diffusion of an illegal credit market, the relationship between households’ overindebtedness and their consumption behavior, the diffusion of an usury market where criminal organizations rise huge profits. Many changes have occurred in the deviant and criminal behaviors, and an appropriate response to all of them ask for a radical innovation in the policies to prevent, control and contrast crime. In our region, what might be perceived as a social damnation is actually the result of different factors that produce a sort of crime trap, such that the diffusion of illegal behaviors reduce legal opportunities making a criminal career more convenient

Abstract: The arrival of the Allies in Italy in July 1943 was not the result of an impromptu decision, but rather of a prolonged debate that involved both political and military agencies in London and Washington for the first four years of the Second World War. The decision to pursue the defeat of the Axis through the invasion of Sicily had been reached by the Anglo-American leaders at Casablanca, in January 1943. The choice to give precedence to Italy in the framework of the European war was by no means a foregone conclusion, and its importance in the strategic developments of World War II in Europe has often been underestimated. This research seeks to re-evaluate the role that the elimination of Italy played in the overall strategy developed by the Allies during the first phase of the Mediterranean conflict. The analysis of the political debates, military planning, and strategic appreciations produced by Anglo-American decision-makers in the 1939-1943 period shows that the Allied wartime interest in Italy, its defeat and the occupation of its territory was the result of a long-term design

Abstract: Following Percy Ernst Schramm’s studies on Staatssymbolik, historians have in general considered medieval royal portraits as images mirroring medieval notions of power and political ideology that can legitimate power and strengthen admiration of the king. This interpretation has also had a crucial impact on the analysis of monarchic ideologies and sacral kingship during the Middle Ages. However, the research prompted in Germany on the social praxis of Memoria has opened up new perspectives, by creating an active historiographical debate about the social function and meaning of royal portraits in the liturgical context during the Middle Ages (political/propagandistic vs religious/devotional). This book aims to foster this debate by analysing the functions and meanings of monarchic pictures characterized by sacral figures and symbols and religious and liturgical contexts in the Norman kingdom of Sicily (1130-1189). In the specific, it investigates three royal portraits: St. Nikolas blesses Roger II in the Basilica of St. Nikolas in Bari; Christ crows Roger II in the Church of St. Mary of the Admiral in Palermo; and Christ crowns William II in the Cathedral of Monreale. By going beyond traditional methodological tactics, its exegesis avoids a ‘one-way’ approach in which artwork is analysed in an ‘autonomous’ manner that extrapolates it from its historical, political and functional context. Moreover, it studies royal portraiture as part of a wider communicative strategy to create a mise-en-scène around the monarchic figure by comparing the iconographic sources and the information provided by written evidence regarding the monarch’s official kingship. This new analysis of the Norman royal portraits in the religious and liturgical context leads to original perspectives and uses new cues to reformulate the traditional ideas held by historiography in this regard and on political ideologies and royal sacrality

Abstract: The Neapolitan Society of Homeland History was created in 1875 through the will of some Neapolitan politicians and scholars, who borrowed its structure from previously established historical societies. Like the other Italian institutions, the Neapolitan association was also primarily interested in the publication of sources, the defense of autonomy, and the attempt to reconcile the smaller and the larger nation. The objective was twofold: to reinforce the ties between the local people and the Savoy dynasty, and to underline, through historical memory, the local contribution made to the process of nation building. Through the biographical reconstruction of some members of the Neapolitan historical society, it is well understood that nothing that happened in the city took place far from the institution; from the control of public instruction to the protection of monuments, to the administration of charity organizations. Although there were already some prestigious cultural associations, the historical society knew how to create a wide network of relationships, thanks to the policy of open membership and a fairly accessible membership fee. The events which took place at this institution, reconstructed here from its founding to 1946, through previously unpublished documentary sources and a full bibliography, are thus useful for those who wish to learn about the cultural dynamics of southern continental Italy and the period following the Unification

Abstract: Capodimonte was the first Palace of Neapolitan Dinasty “Borbone”, but it was neglected due to the rise of Portici and Caserta’s Royal Palaces, therefore, it was built very slowly. It was completed only a century after the laying of the foundation stone (1738). After so long times, which saw the succession of several architects aiming the leadership to the royal site, some of them were quite famous among the most representative figures of Architecture and Art History in Naples, across Eighteenth and Nineteenth centuries. The Royal Site was originally meant as Hunting reserve nearby the Capital and significant place of rest for the young Carlo di Borbone (Charles of Bourbon), who two years later decided to build a Royal Palace too. That decision was intended to amend the territorial aspects of Neapolitan northern hill, also to influence the urban layout before the unification of Italy. This study, based on a careful documentary and iconographic research, highlights the complex development of the palace and its park which are still paying a high price for the most controversial aspects of the project and its execution, emerged since the beginnings

Abstract: An examination of the literature sources, of the archival documents, of the iconographic and cartographic repertoire to reconstruct the key moments of the fascinating architectural and artistic history of one of the most famous monuments of our city. The Basilica of San Giovanni Maggiore is now the result of often ominous and even criminal events, or of some imprudent interventions, that the recent renovations have been able to remedy only partially. Nevertheless, thanks to the constant care and to the appropriate use by the Engineers Order of Naples, it has been lately given back to the city: not only as an important place of worship, but also as a cultural center and a social gathering site, placed in such a significant area of the historic center of Naples, UNESCO World Heritage since 1995. The architectural and artistic analysis of the Basilica has been preceded by a description of urban history in late Antiquity and in the early Middle Ages; it had its fulcrum in the hill of Monterone, now largo of San Giovanni Maggiore, with an irregular and tortuous web, preserved up to us. This work proposes in the second part an updated summary analysis of existing artistic works in the Basilica, as well as those placed in some other locations in order to be preserved or restored

Abstract: The volume is an original contribution to the debate on interventions in favour of gender equality in universities and in research. The book presents the results of the research-action carried out together with the experimentation of the pilot mentoring program, within the European project GENOVATEUNINA. By establishing a dialogue with the latest European researches - developed in the cultural context and in the framework for structural change interventions, promoted through the Seventh Framework Program and Horizon 2020 – this work assumes, as an interpretative framework, the processes of global change that involve the settings of the scientific-academic system. The discussion develops along a linear pathway, moving from the debate on gender equality policies, it leads to the design of the mentoring pilot scheme (the first one to be exclusively women addressed, in the Italian universities) and, therefore, the research that has accompanied the project on its path is also described. The interpretation of results, supported by biographical-narrative interviews on career paths and focus groups with mentors and mentees, reveals through which practices and processes are produced and reproduced gender inequalities in academia and research. Using the tools of the survey, these results have been analysed in order to reconstruct the mentoring functioning as a gender practice capable of de-construct processes that produce inequality and produce transformational effects of the scientific-academic context

Abstract: Cities are in a state in which two opposing forces are acting on them: on the one hand the unabated urbanization process, on the other the evergrowing demand for real sustainability. The book proposes an urban planning response focused on the transformations of urban sectors to be achieved using innovative operative tools; for this aim the book defines the main features of this operative tools. The goal is to include in the cities innovative actions that can provoke a domino effect with repercussions on the entire urban structure. The book is devided in 5 sections. The first one addresses the issue of urbanization and the development of the urban systems, with the related implications in terms of resource consumption and concentration of people and functions. The second part discusses some models that explain the mechanisms of urban sprawl and the derived scenarios. The third part deals with one of the key nodes of the relationship between urban systems and environmental resources, namely the energy. The fourth part analyzes some international case studies to extrapolate recurring characteristics that can affect the operative planning. The fifth section focuses on the features of this new type of plan

Beside a section in which some features of the criminal phenomenon in Naples are illustrated, comparatively to other territories, in the report there are two further sections, one devoted to the seizure of illicit assets and another in which the phenomenon of extortion in Campania is analyzed

Abstract: What is the place of the French Revolution in teaching history? What are the ideological trends and pedagogic messages that are used in school textbooks? Are these textbooks simple "national autobiographies" or the faithful reflection of historical research on the topic? The contributions collected in this volume seek to answer some of these questions, taking into account different countries, from France to Russia, from the United States to China. In a time like ours, where much is said about the public use of history, the relationship between historical research, teaching and dissemination remains a fundamental theme.

Abstract: With this rich anthology of sources, most of which are made available here for the first time, Michele Mancino and Giovanni Romeo add another element to the research project that began with their recent book (Clero criminale. The two parts document from a range of perspectives the way in which the Tridentine project of combating the common crimes of the clergy was undone before the end of the sixteenth century. Instead, the Roman curia was mainly concerned with enforcing the right of delinquent priests to be judged only by ecclesiastical tribunals, a strategy intended to defend the honor of the clergy that was followed persistently over the long term. The material presented here describes a previously unknown historical precedent for the recent revelations about the treatment of pedophile priests

Abstract: Spaces of infinite dimension have played an increasing role in the last four decades concerning their applications in models both for economics and for finance. The intertemporal allocation of resources, commodity differentiation, uncertainty, dynamics of the fundamental variables of financial markets, are some of the issues that can be properly captured by means of the mathematical techniques that are typical in such spaces. This collection contains some recent contributions in this area. Abstract: The legitimacy of slavery, deeply rooted in classical and Christian culture, was called into question starting from the 18th century. It was a slow process, that had to relate to the peculiar forms the slavery institution got with the European colonisation of America in the Modern Age, that is the workforce imported from sub-Saharan Africa. This process was influenced by economic and political aspects and got a turning point on the intellectual history point of view when the problem of the universal acknowledgment of natural rights of men arose. This history did not concern the colonial powers solely, and this volume explores an unknown field about it, that is the Italian Enlightenment culture’s contribution to the transnational antislavery thought. In their writings, the Illuministi – and Southern reformers most of all – bumped into the colonial slavery matter, focusing on economic science, history, ancient and contemporary political treaties and on the definition of reforms inspired by the principles of natural rights. The black slave got the anti-model of the human emancipation project of political Enlightenment and, at the end of the century, of the revolutionary «regeneration». Human trafficking and the violation of natural rights were, for Italian antislaverists, the «infamous commerce»

Abstract: A long-serving leader of the Christian Democratic Party from mid-1940s to late 1950s, Fiorentino Sullo led an intense political action in the province of Avellino, combining exercise of power and political planning, programmatic appeals and rational distribution of resources, political and administrative management of State’s intervention in the public sphere and its bodies, efficient control and modernization of the territory. For over fifteen years, he intended to address and solve the typical dilemma faced by every modernizing elite and posed by the clash between the poles of conservation and transformation. His political career was characterized by a deep understanding of the traditional traits of the local communities, persistent and inevitable in the development of the relationship between politics and society. He also highlighted, in his activities, a strong orientation towards political change and the socio-economic development of a backward periphery

Abstract: The volume includes a series of contributions related to the handicraft productions of the ancient city of Aeolian Kyme (Turkey), edited with the purpose of investigating, through their circulation, the relations of the Aeolian metropolis with other areas of the Aegean see and of the ancient Mediterranean. The work deals with a difficult field of investigation, as not all the Anatolian manufacturing centres, including Kyme, have been properly documented so far. Researches carried out by archaeologists of the University of Naples, University of Calabria and University of Milan, who participate in the activities of the Italian Archaeological Mission in Kyme, reveal the economic role that the city of Kyme had in various historical period. It was a seaport of primary importance, located at the mouth of the Ermo river, which was the main transport route to the Anatolian inland, along the north-south costal road

Abstract: The D’Avalos name evokes images of cruel battles and tragic love stories, reminds figures of great warlords and sophisticated ladies, nourishes the legend of fabulous riches and luxurious residences. The work of scholars who explored the thick forest of Innico and Alfonso D’Avalos descendants do not allow to completely outline the history of this family. The family’s private archive, inviolable guardian of their memories, where records related to the private sphere and official acts, such as pontifical papers and relations with the sovereigns, are kept is still inaccessible. The records of the notary Scotto di Santolo can be very useful, because they allowed the reconstruction of the wide archival heritage coming from the past, recorded along with other property of the family after the death, in 1862, of last heir of the primary branch, the Prince Alfonso D’Avalos. The transcription of the D’Avalos archive before the Italian unification that we present can avoid its definitive "burial"

Abstract: This volume collects a series of studies revolving around the edition of Milanese and Florentine diplomatic correspondence from Naples in the Aragonese age, particularly in the years of Ferrante d'Aragona (1458-94). They range from the history of war and territory to prosopography, from the reconstruction of relation networks in courts to international politics, from feudal geography to the conflicts between monarchy and aristocracy. This results in an important increase in our knowledge of the Kingdom of Naples, made possible by the extensive and systematic study of the diplomatic sources, which is evaluated in its different degrees of reliability also thanks to the support of the other sources available − from both within and without the kingdom − used in the full range of its informative potential

Abstract: The "racial and biological regeneration" of the German people was one of the ideological foundations of the Third Reich. The ideas of an organic improvement and of a racial selection of peoples originated in the utopias of eugenics and racism that were developed in the second half of the nineteenth century in Germany and Europe. Eugenics laws were already in place since the early twentieth century in the United States, and later in Switzerland and Scandinavia. However, it was only in the Nazi Germany that racism and eugenics were able to intertwine and be fully realized into a wide and articulated legislative system aimed at the "defense" of the "racial and genetic integrity" of the German people. Statistics, genetics, demographics, anthropology, and medicine contributed, with their true or alleged scientific nature, to give the discriminatory and racist Nazi ideology an aura of objective certainty. The dangerous combination of these factors was systematically and organically implemented within the proposals of the anti-Semitic, "blood and soil" ruralism. These culminated in the "zootechnical" utopia, consisting of a selective breeding of a new Nordic peasant nobility, the future ruling class of the German racial society. The combination of eugenic and racist instances did not remain confined within utopian projects, but found its dramatic fulfillment in the policies of elimination, namely euthanasia and the Shoah.

Abstract: Through the various essays that compose it, the volume gives voice to subjective experiences and perceptions of men and women involved in military conflicts between the Risorgimento period and the Great War: historical phases characterized by deep elements of continuity regarding the symbolic construction of national identity, but also by equally strong watersheds. The comparison between different contexts is valuable in investigating the relationship between gender, nation, and war. Starting from a stereotype that is still strong, though it has been challenged by recent research − associating women with the desire for peace and men at the will of competition and conquest −, the volume inquired whether a specific "gender" perception of wars emerged from the texts analyzed, and to what extent these conflicts have prodded crisis and transformation in the relations between women and men. In the writings of fighters analyzed in the book − Bourbonists and Garibaldians on the Risorgimento scene, British and Italian volunteers in the First World War − "fighting the war" assumes very different meanings in relation to the side that was chosen and to the individual personality; however, it always represents a crucial moment of confrontation with dominant models of virility. The writings of Louise Colet − a passionate supporter of the Italian cause −, the images of "angels" and "fury" emerging from the male memories of the Risorgimento, alongside writings of so many women mobilized in 1914-18 − from Vera Brittain to Italian irredentists and nationalists, to the feminist minority who remained faithful to pacifist internationalism − remind us that in the nineteenth century, as in the terrible conflict that opens the "age of extremes", the war transformed profoundly, in addition to the lives of men called cannot, in fact, ignore the historical dimension that needs to inform any study that is to be done today on these works

Abstract: In the last years, institutional repositories of preprints and scholarly publications have become a peak experience in the digital library environment, enabling the involvement of authors and scientific communities in a free and shared access to the results of research, and to its circulation trough the web. This volume collects a series of essays, both published and unpublished, that Antonella De Robbio wrote with respect to the issue of scientific information, and to the reply given by the Open Access Movement (OAI). The collection aims to a double purpose: first, to fill the gap in the lacking Italian bibliography concerning Open Archives; second, to take stock of the difficult situation of the Open Access Movement, and of the hope of its advocates that this movement could promote a democratic and immediate circulation of scientific knowledge

Abstract: The essays collected in this volume revolve around the activities of protection and preservation of the historical-artistic and archaeological heritage promoted in Italy between the second half of the 18th century and the first half of the 20th. They refer to different works in both chronology and materials analyzed (wall and gallery paintings, medieval and Renaissance sculptures, mosaics, excavated vases, entire archaeological sites), with the natural corollary of the theoretical debates and the methodological statements that accompanied these same works. The reference to Fernand Braudel in the title embodies the desire to trace a path that is not abstract, but grounded in the reality of the objects and of those who have been studying them in the past. The choice of a relatively broad time span, as well as the decision not to focus exclusively on a single type of object, seek to highlight the diachronic evolution of general concepts such as conservation and restoration, understanding links and differences between the pre-and post-unification phases of the layered national landscape. Further, they aim to retrace the conservative history of these works, hoping to also provide an interpretative tool to those who, in charge of the protection of these works, are tasked with the planning of future interventions: a proper programmatic preservation cannot, in fact, ignore the historical dimension that needs to inform any study that is to be done today on these works

Abstract: This proceedings e-book contains papers presented at the national Symposium on “Electronic Books and the practices of scholarly research”, held in Naples, Italy, on 20 June 2003. The advent of new technologies, tools, and digital resources is changing how scholars conduct their work, keep updated in their field or fields of study, and think about research. Moving from the reconstruction of the market of scientific communication, copyright policies, and management of long-term conservation strategies, the published papers aim to discuss the ways in which scholarly practices have changed in the last decades, even since the end of the last century, in teaching and in research, in various disciplines like history, phisics and biomedical sciences

Abstract: In this book, the dynamics of a nascent political organization in relation to the question of powers and institutions of the Southern Kingdom during the years of 1943-44 are analyzed. The Southern party of DC, taking advantage of both old and new forms of politics, would soon benefit, in addition to the experience of Luigi Sturzo’s populism, of an emerging political class and of the increased weight of the Church in the material and civil crisis caused by the war. In Naples, one of the foremost political headquarters of the liberated Italy, the Catholic Party faced the difficulty of an unconditional membership carried out by the ecclesiastical hierarchy and large sections of the populace to traditional monarchical authority, while its leading group acted from the inside in the context of the pluralistic political and democracy system going out in Cln

Abstract: Legal processes have often been at the core of the public debates. In the West, keeping in mind the political and social chaos between the 18th century and the contemporary world, it is possible to see how circles of opinion often were pervaded and tangled by tales carried out in the courtrooms. The reconstruction of the events as well as of the dynamics that, through these paths, entered into the costume and the society of the time requires the historian to a close analysis of sources as well as of procedures connected to the judicial activity. The essays published in this book aim at providing some elements of reflection about the judicial truth, considering it as a sort of “building” with its epistemological knots and different interpretations, crossing experiences deriving from sociological, historical-juridical, historical-political and politico-logical analysis

Abstract: Such terms as “metadata”, “web strategies”, “interoperability” are commonly used whenever the perspectives of cultural heritage memories on the web are investigated. The risk that well-established methods of preserving and publishing the output of intellectual and artistic activities could hinder data exchange procedures as well as making the creation of multidisciplinary discovery systems required for carrying out reasearch – even in the humanities – is under assessment. The earliest projects adopted the same electronic format and cataloguing rules shared among classes of items of quite a different nature. Far from being the ideal solution, it has fuelled an animated world-wide debate. Nonetheless, thanks to this strategy North American institutions have created in just over a decade those massive digital archives which are the backbone of American Memory. In the meanwhile research on interoperability was carried out with the purpose of creating cross-domain linking devices and more powerful search tools. The latter should be the basis of networks aimed at fittingly supporting reaserch in the fields of historical and bibliographic studies

Abstract: The book presents the correspondence between Roberto Michels and the Italian and French (Sorel and Lagardelle) syndicalists, which constitutes an essential historiographical source for the reconstruction of the controversial political biography of the sociologist. An introductory essay by Giorgio Volpe provides a critical interpretation of Michels' position within the socialist movement. It reconstructs the background of Michels' correspondences and studies the phases of his political militancy through the analysis of his political articles, sociological studies, autobiographical notes and reports on the Italian and German socialist parties' congresses
