Abstract: In his 1979 essay The Postmodern Condition: A Report on Knowledge philosopher Jean-François Lyotard noted that the advent of the computer opened up a stage of progress in which knowledge has become a commodity. Modernity and postmodernity appear as two stages of a process resulting from the conflict of science and narrative. As science attempts to distance itself from narrative, it must create its own legitimacy. This paper takes up this challenge with a focus on the question of imagery. The image is precisely what modern science seeks to free itself from in its quest for absolute transparency. This transparency is examined from the perspective of architecture, drawing on arguments from philosophy, quantum mechanics, theology and information theory. Abstract: Naturwissenschaft im Zeichen der Postmoderne Quantenmechanik und Informationstheorie Neuer Band der Reihe Applied Virtuality Book Series In seinem 1979 erschienenen Essay Das postmoderne Wissen stellte Jean-François Lyotard fest, dass die Einführung des Computers ein Stadium des Fortschritts definiert, in dem Wissen zur Ware wird.

Abstract: In The Digital, a Continent?, the author argues in favor of a way of thinking about digital technology that draws on the new materialism. She uses photosynthesis and nuclear fission as examples of processes that are as artificial as they are natural to explain how digital technology can be viewed within the paradigm of a ""communicative physics"" in which poetics interacts with mathematical thinking. Abstract: The essay aims at reconstructing the history of the University of Florence, from the fall of fascism on July 25th 1943 to the post-World War II period. At the center of this path lies Piero Calamandrei's Rettorato, which began in the summer of 1943 and immediately interrupted by events related to September 8th and the armistice with the Allied powers. As dean of the university, in the aftermath of the Liberation of Florence in August 1944, Calamandrei marked a significant turning point. It was a turning point that not only promptly revived teaching and research functions; but it was also able to provide for the reinstatement of teachers expelled as a result of the racial legislation and for opposition to fascism, along with the beginning of the removals of teachers most involved with the dictatorship. At the same time, in the context of a city deeply involved in the Liberation, the new constitutional order of the Republic began to be drawn; a constitutional project to which Florentine professors - such as Piero Calamandrei and Giorgio La Pira - would offer an outstanding contribution

Abstract: The Ars Pharmaceutica, which teaches the way to prepare, dispense and preserve all the components of the preparation and itself in excellent condition, has accompanied the history of the Florentine University with the School of Pharmacy since the foundation of the Royal Institute of Higher Studies (1859 ) until its transformation into a University in 1924. The Pharmacy studies held in the Arcispedale di S. Maria Nuova have seen numerous teachers hold the chairs of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and have important roles in international research, but also in the management of pharmacies in the area. This contribution reviews all the transformations that have historically occurred in the pharmacy throughout 100 years of the University's history

Abstract: The paper aims to give some coordinates on the dialogue between the Athenaeum and a particular school-educational experience well rooted in Florence and recognised for its merits on an international scale, namely the Scuola-Città Pestalozzi. This is a very significant case to describe the relationship between the University and the school world because Scuola-Città was born and grew up in that laboratory of ideas nourished by the synergy between the cultural, political and pedagogical circles of the city, especially those close to liberal-socialism, and those similar to the University

Abstract: In this chapter we will address, with quick notes, some research projects that the University of Florence has undertaken and which have seen the Arno basin as a subject of study, in order to define lines of governance and development of the territory, also on the basis of an international network which has made it possible to introduce innovative elements of approach and scientific investigation. These are aspects that concern agricultural production, hydraulic and environmental engineering, the protection of water resources, the control of hydrogeological instability, soil protection, urban and territorial planning. We have therefore tried to represent in a rational form some research topics that have been addressed, trying to grasp, over time, the purposes and main impacts

Abstract: The Labour Lawyer is asked, more and more often, to become conversant with the transformations taking place in society and with the impact on work of European regulatory proposals concerning due diligence, artificial intelligence and environmental protection. The growing dematerialization of enterprises and work is bound to increase the distortions and pitfalls of globalization, making it more difficult to identify both the techniques for managing new challenges and the systemic impact of digital transformation but also, with them, the risks of Algorethics at work. The survey thus leads us to reflect on criteria and parameters of environmental and, above all, digital sustainability in working contexts and, consequently, to reflect on the contours and characteristics of a new culture, but also of a new practice, of Corporate social responsibility throughout the digital transformation process

Abstract: The use of natural raw materials is today more significant in architecture than ever before. While timber construction is already firmly established in the field of architecture, there is an increasing focus on alternative construction materials such as clay, straw, cork or bamboo, along with their application features. In full alignment with sustainable construction, they make it possible to plan energy-optimised, recyclable and climate-friendly buildings for the future. The book shows how this can be achieved based on 30 projects of all sizes. The buildings present the entire spectrum of natural materials. They show numerous construction and application methods of the different building materials. This book manifests what is possible using natural construction materials in great detail

Abstract: This book offers a systematic account of the process of designing in architecture. Design thinking can be regarded as a fundamentally different way of knowing the world and a particular form of addressing creative problems. In this publication, the authors undertake to explore multiple and often controversial theoretical stances on the topic. Underlying principles of inquiry are present in all designing and a process takes place involving empathy or listening carefully before storytelling. Prototyping and testing of solutions are illustrated in the book with many examples, seen from different vantage points. Abstract: Due to the Sars-Cov-2 health emergency and the forced stoppage of regular teaching and traineeship activities, digital work-integrated learning models have been widely proposed to Higher Education students. Blended practices and experiences referred to as virtual or simulated work-integrated learning or digital workplace learning are emerging as instrumental in achieving several educational outcomes and, among them, a positive attitude toward Professional Learning and Development. The contribution intends to reflect on the main issues that the Higher Education systems have been facing during the pandemic, with a specific focus on the management of internship and work-integrated learning activities and projects, and the possible widening of the definition of work-integrated learning

Abstract: Drawing on David Sassoli's inspiring vision, we propose a reflection on Europe as a utopian project with ancient rootedness. This project's uniqueness is marked by its unfinished state, always requiring the impetus of renewed hope. The European Union has to be constantly updating and deepening itself in order to survive. In the conclusion we observe how Europe has been a utopian goal of progress for the countries that comprise it, as is the paradigmatic case of Portugal

Abstract: This article explores the conditions under which alum production has developed in the Western Mediterranean, in the second half of the fifteenth century. In two decades, between about 1460 and 1480, several important production sites have appeared in the Italian peninsula or in the Iberian peninsula. They have provided European industries and crafts with quality alum, and they quickly overshadowed sources of supply, that had previously prevailed in Anatolia or the Aegean Sea. The article discusses the useful knowledge mobilized to facilitate this growth, in particular, the techniques used and the players involved in this changeover

Abstract: In David Sassoli, intelligence and cognitive awareness are placed at the service of primordial ethical values: in the passionate defence of knowledge, freedom and commitment to the common good. His deep and strong love for life expands to the way he fraternises, speaks or acts, with a relentless lucidity and moral demand. It is this attitude, this way of exercising citizenship and doing politics, that is recognisably unique and fascinating in him. An independent person who, standing outside the dominant logic and power, attracted others by his authenticity, his example, by the inner voice of a truth, which emerges

Abstract: In medieval and early modern crafts, useful knowledge was taught in the workshops. There, innovation took place. Craftsmen exchanged knowledge on journeys or through voluntary and forced migration. This system of knowledge transfer does not need writing, although craftsmen used writing both in the workshop and in the administration of the guilds and the towns. However, transmission of knowledge remained oral. This contrasts with countless craftsmen's manuscripts that conveyed technical knowledge about crafts in text and images. This essay argues that these manuals were equally crucial for the transmission of useful knowledge between master craftsmen as well as the sale of products to clients. A book on plate harnesses and one on bell and gun casting are introduced as examples

This chapter intends to continue and deepen such hybridisation of knowledge and reflection areas with reference to the evolutionary tendencies underway, both in geography and in territorialist theory and practice, in view of the transformations of the food system and the renewed public and scientific attention to food/territory relationship: a theme, intrinsically rebellious to disciplinary fences, which opens up the field of planning to a broad and multifaceted reading of the ecological relations structuring human settlements

Abstract: Images of “princes” and “princesses” can be found in a number of Florbela Espanca’s works. Indeed in some poems she goes as far as to represent herself as such, highlighting these terms in both titles and content, notably, in two sonnets. Our intention here is to analyze these representations first as something recurrent in European literature and then by examining the way Florbela takes them up, deploying two very characteristic angles of her poetics, namely her values. However, we will first review the historical context in which the poetess lived, more specifically in Vila Viçosa, with its palaces and castles, which housed the last of Portugal’s kings

This paper is to show in a very concise way how the production of European glazed ceramics underwent three phases of intense transformation of useful knowledge related to its production, with a successive accumulation leading to increasingly efficient results and a higher level of productivity. Moreover, it can be safely stated that, without this accumulation, the great progress of the 19th century in this area would have been impossible

Abstract: Dostoevsky’s Dialectic: The Name of the Father and the Saving Power of Childhood. The artistic experience of Dostoevsky’s novels combines two rather heterogeneous hermeneutic strategies – the analysis of the unconscious and of existential utopia. In the first case, Dostoevsky problematizes the completeness of the symbolic order of culture as such through the thematization of the figure and name of the Father. From the perspective of the second strategy, Dostoevsky creates his own utopia of a symbolic order, with the eternal substance of people’s life capable of infinite renewal in the child’s soul in the role of the great Other. His novels reveal what can be called the creative core of culture. The murder of Fyodor Karamazov is an archetypal event, a sacrifice of the Body of the Father for the sake of the NAME of the dead Father, it initiates a paradigmatic process in the Symbolic

Abstract: The article explores gender-neutral language strategies in Italian university documents, introducing “gender obfuscation” to avoid gender markers. Strategies discussed include using generic nouns, passive/impersonal verbs, and relative/indefinite pronouns. Inclusive language benefits are acknowledged, but complexity and reduced clarity are highlighted. The authors recommend inclusive language, including the unmarked masculine form for complex cases. Italian universities adoption of Gender Equality Plans (GEP) in response to European Commission directives is also discussed. Emphasis is placed on language attention in GEPs and collaboration with linguists for inclusivity and gender equality. Balancing language simplification with gender-inclusive objectives is recognized as a challenge

Abstract: Sergio Caruso conceives citizenship not only as a set of rights and duties related to belonging to a political community but also as a bundle of social functions, in which next to the citizen-voter there is the citizen producer, consumer, taxpayer, user, and so on. And it proposes new forms of political participation linked to this plurality of citizenship declinations to complement political democracy

Abstract: This work reports on an ongoing Italian-English translation project that began in 2018. This project aims at compiling a learner corpus and involves a Government Department as client and a selected group of MA students as translators. Texts to be translated focus on cultural heritage and are targeted to the international tourism market. This chapter centers on a sub-corpus that focuses on churches and palaces of the House of the Estense. This chapter draws attention to the target texts of our corpus. Starting from the extraction of specific terms in the source texts, target texts are analysed quantitatively and qualitatively in order to identify translation strategies and frequent mistakes with the aim of contributing to the translation of art and architecture for heritage tourism

Abstract: The Paradox of Female Sexual Desire in Crime and Punishment: On the Question of the Female Breast . This article examines references to the female breast found in Dostoevsky’s novel Crime and Punishment to reveal the contradictory role of female sexuality in his literary world. Despite feminist inclinations and a personal familiarity with “emancipated love,” he had particular difficulty with issues of women’s sexual desire and female corporeality, associating them with danger. He actively suppressed the bodies and desire of physically attractive women in his work. In Crime and Punishment, for ex., both Sonia and Dunia attract male desire, but do not express their own. References to the female breast in his work reveal this deep ambivalence about the female body: now alluring, now menacing, now subject to torture, the breast can also be symbolically maternal or disease-ridden

Abstract: this article explores the likelihood that early modern printers had de-veloped rudimentary practices aimed at assessing their market of refer-ence to pursue strategic commercial planning. It surreys the inner evi-dence of a single manuscript bibliographic compiled by a minor mem-ber of the Giunta publishing house active in Venice in order to pro-pose the hypothesis that said catalogue may have been instrumental to commercial bibliometrics aimed to avoid harmful competition between redundant editions within the same market area

Abstract: The goddess Išḫara is attested early in cuneiform sources, and her cult can be traced back in all regions of the Ancient Near East over a period of more than 2000 years. From this point of view, it is worthwhile to look at her integration into the Hittite pantheon and try to identify changes and continuities in her figure and present some ideas about the circumstances under which the process of integration took place

Abstract: On Features of Word Usage in Dostoevsky’s Poetic Dictionary in Connection with M.L. Uralskij and G. Mondry’s Dostoevsky and the Jews (St. Petersburg: Aletheia, 2021) . This article addresses the question of Dostoevsky’s alleged anti-Semitism with particular attention to Uralskij and Mondry’s book devoted to this topic, in which conclusions about the author’s chauvinism and xenophobia are based on his use of the word ‘Jew’ (zhid). For almost the entirety of the 19th century, however, such word usage was not a marker of anti-Semitism. Throughout his life, Dostoevsky communicated with many representatives of the Jewish people without differentitating them in any particular way from representatives of other nationalities. In the writer’s poetic dictionary, the word ‘Jew’ sometimes denotes a person who acquires unscrupulously, examples of which Dostoevsky found in all nationalities of the world, including the Russian

Abstract: In his last speech as President of the European Parliament, on 16 December 2022, addressed to the heads of state of the European Union and entitled "Europe must show allegiance to its citizens“, David Sassoli underlines the importance of thinking about the Europe of the future. Bearing in mind the history and memory of the continent, the roots of the Euroean culture and its long traditions of humanistic and scientific knowledge, he presents three axes of development - innovation, protection and dissemination - for a Europe that must be thought of as a project, dynamic, hopeful, young spirited and faithful to its humanist and democratic basis

Abstract: Tally sticks worked as ubiquitous stores of numerical knowledge and tools of accounting and administration in medieval Europe. Previous research emphasized both the potential and value of the wooden notched sticks not only for the social and economic history of the Middle Ages, but also for the history of writing, intellectual history. This article combines the analysis of archival objects and written sources from England and Germany analysing their various contexts of use. These involve the centralised, highly professional and ritualised tax accounting at the English Exchequer, husbandry and agriculture, consumer taxation as well as public credit and circulating money-substitutes. Furthermore tallies were often used as evidence in court and functioned alongside written administration

Abstract: This chapter takes into consideration two Russian translations of the Vita of Cimabue. One of these presents a selection from Le Vite de’ più eccellenti pittori, scultori, e architettori by Giorgio Vasari and is dated 1933; the other is the first complete Russian translation of Vasari’s Vite published between 1956 and 1971. The comparison of these two translations focuses on morphological, lexical and syntactical aspects of the original version. Particular attention is devoted to the translation of inter-phrasal and intra-phrasal connectors, of the coniunctio relativa and of gerunds. The chapter also reflects on the translation of Latin inscriptions, toponyms and proper nouns

Abstract: The topic that we will deal with in this essay is central for the development of higher education in Italy, Europe and the world. Universities as academic and educational institutions have changed radically over the last 50 years. At present, their task is to educate and train new brackets of the population for a future in which competencies and learning will be the points of reference for an ever more rapidly and intensely evolving and developing world. To this end, it becomes important to reflect on the topic of building university curricula in the educational sector and on the competencies achieved by the graduates from master’s courses designed to train the professional figure of pedagogist. The aim of the article is to concentrate on the internal aspects of university programmes whose goal is to train true professionals in the world of education and training, who are able to take on the responsibilities required of them and to display the necessary competencies. Here, it will be offered the last results of a qualitative research on the perceptions of the learning outcomes of two groups of master degree students in Adult Education and Pedagogical Sciences at the University of Florence. Given the Europe's historical relevance in the development of science and technology and my own European experience, I comment on this Sassoli's "political testament", highlighting three major challenges for Europe and arguing that, in addition to science and technology, the future of the European Union must be based on the values he espoused

Abstract: Already by the Late Bronze Age, culturally distinct cults of Kubaba existed throughout the region controlled by the Hittite Empire. After the fall of the empire and the fragmentation of the political landscape of the Syro-Anatolian region, these cults persisted in local contexts, developing along their own trajectories, and thus producing hypostases of the goddess with unique roles, modes of expression, and perhaps aliases. However, these local variations did not evolve in a vacuum, but in many cases through a process of interregional and intercultural interactions. This paper will examine these processes along with the resultant expressions of local cults of Kubaba, demonstrating specific trajectories for interactions between neighboring groups, along with selective adaptations and rejections of foreign cultic concepts. Preliminary results suggest an interesting convergence between these cults and certain sociolinguistic boundaries within the region, perhaps connected to communities with shared group identities

Abstract: The essay illustrates the progressive weakening of the figure of the prince-bishop of Trento, feudal lord of most of the holders of castle lordships in the Trentino area. During the fourteenth century and especially the fifteenth century, noble families learned to look to Vienna and Innsbruck and to participate in the Tyrolean diets. With the sole exception of Alexander of Mazovia, the Trentino prince-bishops following Niccolò da Brno were all faithful to the empire and indeed strong supporters of it

The founding fathers of the European project opened up the path that men of good-will like David Sassoli were capable of dynamizing with determination and wisdom. It is important to follow their example and make of the general interest of Europe the common wish of each citizen and each nation

Abstract: Eco-territorialist approach to spatial planning overcomes functional approaches assuming as key references man/nature co-evolution, the diverse components of living, the participation of inhabitants to territorial governance, the territorial context not as the object of planning choices but as a real living subject. The territorial context, a both existing and potential heritage for the settled community, is considered as a fundamental 'actant' in the ecological transition process. The reference to some important contributions for the ongoing redefinition of the theoretical methodological statute of the discipline substantiates the challenge of this alternative approach to planning

Abstract: The riches of the Hittite tablet collections are justly famous for the great mass of information they provide about deities, cult, and religious beliefs all over the Kingdom of Hattusa. The sheer amount of available texts and the fragmented state of many of them pose nontrivial problems for any systematic study of the Hittite religion. Expanding on the digital edition of the so-called cult inventories (CTH 526-530, ca. 450 fragments) and exploiting the potential of the related database, this paper provides for the first time a quantitative analysis of the panthea of local towns in the core area of the kingdom in the Late Empire period. The study is organized in two parts. Part One sets out the methodological basis for the analysis by examining the target corpus in terms of internal consistency, discussing the appropriateness of a distinction between “state” vs. “nonstate” cults both within the perspective of the current discourse on Hittite religion and specifically with regard to its consequences for the proposed analysis, and laying out the analytical principles used in the extraction of the relevant information. Part Two presents selected sets of data, explores ways to interpret and combine them, and investigates their significance for the study of local panthea in the Late Empire. The results are twofold. On the one hand, an innovative picture of the panthea under discussion is obtained, with substantial implications for our understanding of a number of deities, their relationship to each other, and their role within the religious life of provincial communities. On the other hand, the critical scrutiny of the nature and specific traits of the data sample highlights methodological pitfalls in a purely quantitative analysis of Hittite religious texts, and proposes correctives for mitigating their impact, thereby providing a significant case study for future research

Abstract: The shift between the first and second half of the twentieth century marked a watershed. It represented the “sunset of modernity” and made tradition unattainable, thereby calling into question the very survival of poetry. This collection focuses on the work of Giuseppe Ungaretti as poet, translator, and critic, which took the lead from this fracture. As the essays gathered here show, this fracture took a specific shape in Ungaretti’s work, which was reviewed in distinct ways and had a lasting impact up to the present day, alongside twentieth-century history and poetry. The book thus offers a multifaceted picture aimed at assessing albeit provisionally the later Ungaretti’s writings and his legacy for future generations of writers

Abstract: The historical vicissitudes of the stately Trentino and Tyrolean archives are extremely complex. Archives have long been preserved in castles and aristocratic homes (and in some cases still are); until the end of the 19th century they underwent manipulations, transfers, splits linked to the functioning of the aristocratic society of the Habsburg empire, with the transfer of funds also to distant territories (Czech Republic, Bavaria, etc.). Only recently have the provincial archives of Bolzano and Trento become the most significant place for preserving the memory of the Trentino aristocracy

Rossi, the highest and most concrete theoretical and political expressions of the contemporary age. Europe means democracy, therefore freedom, social justice, solidarity among the peoples and within the peoples that make up the European Union. It means building and looking upwards towards peace

In particular, the essay illustrates Trentin's commitment to the recognition of a more straightforward negotiating role of the social partners. This was reached in 1991 when Ces, Unice and Ceep claimed from Delors' Commission the possibility of mandatory consultation in order to be able to negotiate directly afterwards, on all social issues on which the Commission intended to legislate. These records reveal his direct involvement in the political and military affairs of the region, as shown by the well-known concession letter issued to him by Cesare Borgia in 1502. The chapter presents a critical reexamination of the principal interventions to the fortifications of Cesena between 1502 and 1503, which were the focus of Leonardo’s observations during his stay when Cesare Borgia tried to transform it into the capital of his ephemeral duchy

Abstract: This paper focuses on visions and representations of Italy that emerge from the travel writings and narrative intersections of Sino-Italian mobilities. Taking its primary example from the travels of Zou Taofen (1895-1944), who enshrined his memories of Italy in Pingzong jiyu 萍踪寄语 (Messages from an unending wandering) while exiled from China, this critical exploration of mobility traces the spread of ideas between the Italian Peninsula and the Republic of China. Zou’s new and original visions of Italy reached a broad readership during the republican period, spreading widely and making Zou a “central figure of the New Culture era." Despite his place as one of the most successful and influential journalists in the history of the Republic of China, Zou has not yet “received his full due” (Mitter 2004, 55)

Abstract: The nature of the administration of sacred time in Hittite Anatolia represents a complex problem, which has received little attention until recent years. This paper provides an overview of the topic, reconsidering the Hittite religious calendar as a whole and analysing some of the main issues connected with the Hittite calendrical system, such as the problem of the beginning of the year, the lunar nature of the Hittite month and the alleged existence of a system of intercalation

Abstract: The Europe of the future, democratic, freedom fighter, promoter of peace and well-being, is a task of all Europeans. The founding fathers of the European project opened up the path that men of good-will like David Sassoli were capable of dynamizing with determination and wisdom. It is important to follow their example and make of the general interest of Europe the common wish of each citizen and each nation

Abstract: The author reconstructs, through a path stretched between history and memory, the importance of the European and international dimension in Trentin's political and trade union action, from the experience of the FSM to the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC). It is an excursus that unravels through the encounter with the French Christian trade unionism of the 1960s and the experience of the Councils union in the second Red Two Years, the united unions in the 1980s, up to the Maastricht Europe of the 1990s, passing through the important divide in 1989

Abstract: The essay dwells on the important reflection on the dialectic between war and peace that Trentin opens up in parallel with the first and second Gulf Wars, involving the role of the Union as an international actor and the need for European defense before the waning of American hegemony. The author points out how Trentin participates in the life of the European Parliament with the same intellectual setting that led him heretically to argue that "freedom comes first". Political Europe comes first, he argued. The importance of a political Europe in the governance of globalization is, in fact, central to his tenure in the European Parliament and his battle for the approval of the European Constitution project

Abstract: In recent years, Chinese students have enjoyed a prominent presence in the Italian higher education system. A recent survey conducted by Uni-Italia shows that Chinese students account for 24% of non-EU students in Italian universities. When the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) erupted in Italy at the beginning of 2020, panic spread quickly through social media; numerous fears, generated by the tide of information available online, permeated the Chinese university student community in Italy. This chapter first analyses the problems encountered by Chinese university students in Italy during the COVID-19 pandemic, and then introduces the artistic and cultural response from within that same community. Such forms of creative response also shine light, more generally, on a growing Anti-Asian sentiment in Italy. Despite the enormous challenges posed by COVID-19, Chinese university students in Italy have developed a mode of communication that builds bridges between different cultures— quite different from “mass media” or “major news outlets”—because it is personal, honest, and intimate

Abstract: Leonardo’s multifaceted experience has often been celebrated as a key historical legacy placed in a distant past. However, an interdisciplinary investigation of Leonardo’s thought, studies and design intentionality, trying to combine art and science, has highlighted the cornerstones of an ante litteram territorialist vision. To the finished product, Leonardo always prefers the knowledge of the most intimate relationships among components of the territory, always understood as a living being, thus giving posterity an immense gallery of possibilities. Therefore, Leonardo’s complex and integrated vision is a viaticum for the project of today’s manifold territory

Abstract: Sima Gong and Zeng Xin are two of the most prominent contemporary Sinophone writers in Thailand. Although they were born in Thailand, they frequently write about migration. In this chapter I want to ask why the motive of migration is so prominent in their works and how they write about it. I argue that their ancestors’ quest from China to Thailand is indeed not the focus of attention but the wandering between these two places. Although they did not physically migrate from China to Thailand, these authors use literature as a means to travel mentally between the two countries, and “re-live” the migratory experience through their texts. Analyzing these selected texts offers a unique insight into the authors’ floating identity, one that is constantly migrating between China and Thailand

Abstract: Among his hydraulic designs, Leonardo planned the construction of an artificial lake in an area east of the castle of Vinci, his native village. The project, a surprising demonstration of his perfect knowledge of places where he lived, is illustrated in three drawings found and studied by Renzo Cianchi. Today, it is particularly interesting to analyze the feasibility of Leonardo’s project, by chronologically translating it to the 21st century, namely in 2020. Based on an accurate hydrologic analysis, this paper aims at providing further insights on Leonardo’s study, focusing on the feasibility of the dam

Abstract: The fictional works of the Chinese writer Xue Yiwei, who migrated to Canada in 2002, can be regarded as a byproduct of cross-border mobility and cultural displacement. This paper examines the relationship between the individual and the metropolis in four short stories from the collection Shenzheners, focusing on the impact of the writer’s transcontinental relocation on his representation of city dwellers and intercultural encounters. This research adopts an interdisciplinary framework, which merges textual analysis with the approaches of Cultural Studies and Literary Urban Studies, and places this theoretical construction within a transnational context. By investigating the multiple narrative forms Xue Yiwei uses to question stereotypical cultural boundaries and to build a bridge between Chinese and global literatures, the connection between his experience of mobility and his hybrid fictional microcosm will be explored

Abstract: Within the many typologies of mobility between China and Italy, labour mobility is the one that is numerically most important, constituting over 80% of Chinese citizens living in Italy. In terms of cultural productivity, however, it is the one that is least represented. While Chinese international students who live in Italy are very active in the visual arts and individuals who reached Italy through other forms of privileged mobility are also well represented by their literary production in Italian or Chinese, immigrants who work in sectors that require lower skills appear to be under-represented as far as their cultural production is concerned. In this chapter, I introduce the work of Deng Yuehua, a migrant from Fujian who arrived in Italy in 1991. Since then he has been working in different factories and sweatshops run by other Chinese migrants while constantly publishing his writings. In the mid-2000s, he started publishing works in Chinese in local Sinophone magazines and newspapers, as well as on the web. I observe how his production revolves around the trope of the youzi 游子, the wanderer, which has a long tradition in his area of origin. Moreover, by drawing on the new mobility studies paradigm, I highlight how through textual analysis of the production by mobile subjects, we can infer knowledge on the implications of specific mobilities that would be hard to gain otherwise. Specifically, Deng Yuehua’s work casts an important light on the private and personal dimensions of individuals who are involved in labour mobility flows from Southern China to Italy

Abstract: Ongoing study of the pottery assemblage and its surrounding context in Area 4 at the site of Alalakh has again brought to light a phenomenon that is considered typical for the Iron Age I Levant: the construction of pits/silo installations in open areas. This phenomenon has been interpreted as a sign of ruralisation or insecure economic conditions, a possible marker for the political instability in the area during the 13th-12th centuries BCE. This article examines the similarities and differences between the examples from the Iron Age I in the ‘Amuq and contemporary sites in the Levant, and also considers later similar installations from the Iron Age II. Keeping in mind the functions usually ascribed to these structures, this study also analyses the so-called ‘Anatolian’ tradition of grain storage in the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age in order to address the role of these installations in understanding possible food control strategies and their possible impact in the Levant

Abstract: The aim of this chapter is to point out the connection between mobility and cultural activities of Chinese returnee opera students. Many Chinese students in Italy attend cultural and artistic university courses. They may be considered significant in analyzing Chinese reverse migration from Italy. The examined connection involves several dynamics, including artistic aspects, historical reasons, social and economic changes, public policies and consumerism styles. Mobility and cultural production may be analyzed through both a structural and imaginative dimension. The structural dimension is composed of international agreements, global mobility law conditions, social and economic changes, and private investments in education to accumulate cultural capital that produce (or reproduce) certain social structures and experiences. On the other hand, the imaginative dimension is shaped by the lifestyle adopted by middle class families, including their work activities and cultural consumption. Returnee students are both the subjects who promote this process and the object of this dynamic. Chinese singers of Italian opera, upon graduating university in Italy, join the possibilities of the work field—in Bourdieu’s perspective—which is formed by the two aforementioned dimensions. Finally, perceived differences between Italy and China in terms of musical technique and culture are reworked according to contemporary cultural policies

Abstract: Leonardo’s maps are to be analysed not only in relation to all his works, but also in the context of the cartography between the second half of the 15th century and the early 16th century and the techniques of so-called vedutismo pittorico. The aim of the contribution is to highlight – through a series of case studies – the potential of Leonardo's maps as sources for the reconstruction of the historical landscape. The research, starting from some of the maps produced by Leonardo, focused on two of the strands that appeared to be most significant: how to georeference Leonardo’s maps in a GIS environment; topographical analysis aimed at recognising main population centres and road network

Abstract: It is commonly known that Italian departments, or at least Italian literature courses, were inaugurated in Chinese universities in the 1980s. Less known is the period of the 1930s, in which a Chinese student who specialized in Foreign Literature at Tsinghua University obtained a scholarship by the Italian government to study in Italy for two years: Tian Dewang 田德望 (1909-2000) was the first Chinese student to study Italian literature in Italy. In the 1980s he became a famous professor and translator of Italian literature, and was the first to complete an entire translation of Dante’s The Divine Comedy into Chinese. This paper is aimed at reconstructing the relation between the Chinese student and his Italian professor, Attilio Momigliano, and how the ‘mobility experience’ of Tian Dewang in Italy inspired and influenced his future academic career

Abstract: At the intersection of economics and sociology, geography and planning, the concept of social district presents unmistakable assonances with that of urban bioregion. Both refer to (and trigger) a return, the former to the social, the latter to the territory; and both presuppose an assumption of consciousness and responsibility, in the management of self-government dynamics, on the part of industrious and cooperating territorial communities, which in this establish themselves as communities of care. The contribution unfolds the intricate and rich yarn of relations between the two perspectives, in which correspondences and discordances, themes and variations interweave together to create a common vision and project

Abstract: In recent decades, the importance of rural lordship in the history of Italy in the late Middle Ages has been reconsidered and reassessed. On the basis of a wealth of archive documentation, this volume offers a systematic and reasoned description of the political, economic, social and cultural aspects of rural lordship in a territory located “on the borders of Italy'” the episcopal principality of Trento in the 14th and 15th centuries. From their castles scattered in the alpine valleys, at the foot of the mountains, the noble families of Trento looked increasingly towards Vienna and the Habsburg empire; in their relations with the peasant world, they set up in the 15th century balances of power destined to remain almost intact throughout the modern age, until the end of the First World War

Abstract: From Silence-Weapon to Silence-Dialogue (and Back?). Raskol’nikov’s Paradoxical Path in Crime and Punishment. The article explores the phenomenon of silence in Crime and Punishment as an expression of the reverse logic of Dostoevsky’s world. Silence in Dostoevsky escapes any attempt at a univocal interpretation, as the use of molchanie and tishina in his novels suggests. It is an emblem of the mistery of human existence because it concerns the character’s oscillation between the closure in himself and the opening to the other, between the need to express himself and the awareness of never being able to do it properly. Two levels of the functioning of silence are taken into account: as a stylistic technique used by Dostoevsky to enhance the dramatic effect of some scenes and convey the subtlest nuances of the character’s mood; and as a metaphor for Raskol’nikov’s dramatic existential journey from self-affirmation to the affirmation of the other’s being

Abstract: While the analysis of humor, paradox, and deliberate deconstruction has generally occupied a marginal position in the study of Dostoevsky’s universe, it seems impossible to understand his poetics without pointed attention to these categories. The present book aims to fill the existing gap by focusing on the nature of ambivalent humor, paradoxicality, and methods of ‘de-automatizing’ consciousness through deconstruction, arguing that these are central elements in Dostoevsky’s creative arsenal. It is precisely the dialogical and paradoxical nature of his artistic method that enables such different and sometimes contradictory readings. Dostoevsky, who proclaimed «the excitement of compassion» as the secret of humor (in the ‘funny’ there is always sadness and even despair), more generally exposes in his writing the structural duality of all phenomena

Abstract: The major breakthrough in ship design around 1400 creating the full-rigged ship constituted a general purpose technology. It had far-reaching effects on shipping, trade volume, orientation of trade routes, location of production, settlement patterns and many other aspects of life throughout the globe from 1400 to1800. The greater efficiency of the type in a number of uses led to its dissemination, to a limited degree, throughout the world. Spillovers from the success of the design were extensive and included for example a literature on designing and building ships, improvements in navigation and in government practices. Advances in shipbuilding were one of the very few technologies in the period that qualified as a technological advance with massive consequences

Abstract: we can state that economically useful knowledge could induce innovations which further deepened and widened this economically useful knowledge; and this cycle was at least one of the decisive factors of raising profitability and, as a final con-sequence, of economic growth becoming obvious in the industrial evolutions in different European and later also non-European countries. To say it more clearly: Innovations did influence economic growth. Cultural and institutional processes, which generated knowledge and human capital, could influence the development of labour productivity. Knowledge did contribute to reduce risks in pre-industrial societies through information, communication, and resilience

Abstract: The essay outlines the features of an eco-territorialist and patrimonial approach to energy transition, a process that is not taking place with the necessary urgency nor with the desirable consistency with respect to the principles of ecologic-environmental and landscape sustainability. Energy resources, one of the founding components of the urban bioregion, are available in every territory with specific peculiarities; rethinking the energy system in a non-predatory perspective means protecting the reproducibility of such resources and establishing virtuous dynamics creating territorial value added. Energy communities can represent effective tools for the enhancement of local energy heritages still not properly employed, towards a horizon of progressive energy sovereignty of territories

Abstract: The paper draws from Sergio Caruso’s reflections that the ‘extension’ and ‘intensification’ of citizenship are inseparable from democracy. Within this framework, it questions how innovative formulations of democracy such as so-called ‘deliberative arenas’ can contribute to the strengthening of citizenship. Specific attention is devoted to the public debate on major works, a privileged field of inquiry for some assessments of the effectiveness of participation guaranteed by such instruments

Abstract: Since 2012, Global Learning Cities has become a successful network-based movement of UNESCO which demonstrates not only linkages, but also dependencies amongst community development, adult learning and active citizenship (UNESCO 2017). Examples of Cork, Espoo, Belgrade and South Korea have highlighted (Németh 2020), that communities are unable to develop successful models of learning cities unless they combine smart, creative and sustainability dimensions through community-based adult and lifelong learning for social cohesion, economic stability, growth and environmental awareness. Equitable ways of community learning can better reach underrepresented groups of adults who want to develop and sustain their neighbourhoods through collecting and sharing knowledge (Ó Tuama 2020). Other examples from India, Palestine and the UK demonstrate that it is not the label itself, but the smart and creative urban adult learning which can be combined with needs of communities (Németh et al. 2020). In the evolution of learning cities, we have arrived to an Era of uncertainties, therefore, we have to demonstrate that the learning cities depend on better participation, performance and partnerships in learning, surrounded by collective actions for better futures of education

Abstract: The topic of the Anatolian panthea in the Bronze Age deals with Hattian, Hittite, Palaean, Luwian and Hurrian gods who have been worshiped in the Kingdom of Ḫatti. In such a context, along with trying to keep a balanced and methodologically-aware approach in our original research, we realized that a multi-authored work such as the present volume, with papers written by some of the major experts of Anatolian religious history, would represent an invaluable contribution to the advancement of a complex and vast field. This collection of essays is the result of the workshop Theonyms, Panthea and Syncretisms in Hittite Anatolia and Northern Syria, held at the University of Verona on 25th and 26th March 2022. Colleagues with different areas of expertise pertaining to the topic of Anatolian religions contributed to an extremely successful event

Abstract: Onomastics and Paradox: Dostoevsky and the Collapse of the Ontological Integrity of Character. Onomastics plays a key role in Dostoevsky’s poetics: the names of most of his characters are essential to their portraits, even though these names rarely signify unambiguously. Moreover, a number of his characters are nameless and a semantic tension arises from this absence: the impossibility of “branding” the hero with a name prevents us from identifying his or her features through verbal onomastic symbolism. The portrait of such characters necessarily remains somewhat murky. It is no coincidence that the “nameless heroes” are the most paradoxical and enigmatic characters of Dostoevsky’s creative world. By denying them names, Dostoevsky seeks to destroy the inner integrity of these heroes, their identity, in order that a living, independent, and contradictory personality emerges in them

Abstract: The Introduction presents the chronological evolution of the practices employed in the translation of the language of cultural heritage. All the Chapters in this volume share close ties with the objectives of the research project «Multilingual Cultural Heritage Lexicon» and follow three trajectories: 1. The translations of Vasari as primary sources for the origins of the lexicon of the arts in Europe 2. Considerations on translation praxis and teaching of different text types of cultural heritage 3. The latest developments in the compilation and use of translational corpora in relation to local heritage sites. Through a diachronic and a synchronic perspective, all chapters contribute to the existing literature on Corpus-based Translation Studies (CTS) of the language of cultural heritage

Abstract: Foreword. Dostoevsky: Paradox, Humor, Deconstruction. A foreword to the present book and to each of the 15 articles that are part of it. While the analysis of humor, paradox, and deliberate deconstruction has generally occupied a marginal position in the study of Dostoevsky’s universe, it seems impossible to understand his poetics without pointed attention to these categories. The present book aims to fill the existing gap by focusing on the nature of ambivalent humor, paradoxicality, and methods of “de-automatizing” consciousness through deconstruction. It is precisely the dialogical and paradoxical nature of Dostoevsky’s artistic method that enables such different and sometimes contradictory readings

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to verify that in economies prior to the 18th century and from the Middle Ages onwards, there was a significant increase in the application of knowledge in the goods produced and a development of both technological and organizational innovation, i.e. "useful knowledge". It is also a question of verifying the effect of cultures, institutions and power structures on the generation of knowledge, its diffusion and its technological and productive use. In conclusion, the reduction of risk and the increase of productivity were aspects linked to the "knowledge economy" also in the pre-industrial era

Abstract: The concept of urban bioregion provides an interpretive and design perspective to the critical vision of planetary urbanisation, pursuing the recovery of co-evolutionary relations between human settlement and the environment through the reconstruction both of the ‘urbanity’ of places in plural and multi-centred forms and of the relations between urban and rural life-worlds. The experience of the Apulia Regional Landscape Plan is presented as an attempt of policy and planning innovation aimed at supporting re-inhabiting practices consistent with the principles and forms of the urban bioregion. The Plan promotes projects and actions characterised by a multi-scalar dimension, which assume as key factors for a just and regenerative local development the re-establishment of co-evolutionary relationships between human settlement and the geo-environmental system, the mobilisation of local knowledge, and the shaping of a sense of belonging to places and inhabitants’ care practices

Abstract: The Quality Assurance history and, in general, the building of quality concept have accompanied the humanity history. With the advent of the production systems of the second and third Industrialisations Movement, this meant strengthening the control of products and services. With the end of the last century, more and more quality has affected processes and organisations as a whole. Today, Total Quality Management models cover all sectors of goods and services. Thus, also education systems can have great benefits from the spread of a Quality Culture. The essay aims to trace the history of TQM and shows how it also concerns formal and informal training. It also wants to show how the introduction of Quality Assurance Systems helps to create positive effects at both the micro, meso, macro and mega levels

Abstract: Five decades ago, first works and researches that have as title or subject « Envi-ronmental accounting », « Ecological accounting », or « Social accounting » have emerged. In these works, there are notably examples of accounting for strong sustainability approach in the agricultural sector. This paper searches for account-ing for sustainability premise in the French agricultural accounting literature of XVII-beginning of XIX centuries. It demonstrates that this literature presented some strong sustainability issues, although as a productivity and innovation dif-fusion condition, even earlier that the term of “accounting for sustainability” ex-isted
