Abstract: This book deals with a variety of socio-cultural, economic and political problems facing Cameroon and the rest of Africa, with particular reference to unemployment, corruption, poverty, criminality, violence, insecurity, and moral decadence. It presents a critical analysis of government policies from the colonial era to the present time; arguing that most of these policies have been stalled by an uncommitted leadership. The regime in Cameroon has drifted away from basic managerial and democratic principles in in favour of the ethnicisation of politics, sterile consumption, clientelism and patronage. The book contends that corruption has become the main instrument of governance whereby the political and economic elites control the wealth of the nation at the expense of a majority who wallow in abject poverty and misery. Faced with the difficult economic and political situation, most youth and the intelligentsia have adopted official and unofficial' means to circumvent all immigration rules to travel to affluent Western countries, the consequences notwithstanding. Brain drain is often the outcome. Further, it examines issues of social exclusion, political representation and marginalization with special focus on the predicament of Anglophone Cameroonians as a socio-cultural community. The inclusion of examples and case studies based on empirical and secondary data from Africa is intended to foreground the importance of comparison, and attract the interest of both academic and non-academic readership.

Abstract: This study raises awareness to the emergence of a new genre in world literatureóhybridized literature. It rejects the assumption according to which literatures written in less commonly taught languages should be subsumed into one universally accessible global idiom. Instead, Vakunta challenges literary scholars and readers of literature to regard untranslatability as the key to cross-cultural engagement. The bookís multiple approaches and innumerable sources generate complex interdisciplinary connections and provide an excellent introduction to a complex literary phenomenon alien to literati resident outside the officially bilingual multicultural and multilingual Republic of Cameroon.

Abstract: Teachers, doctors and senior civil servants used to be considered role models in society but as in every profession, there are always black sheep who tarnish the reputation of their peers. Beneath the stereotype of a hardworking employee, here are cases of people who have committed crimes of a sexual or perverse nature. Read about the serial rapist who found his victims through social media; the elderly doctor who was accused of molesting his patient; the senior civil servant who traded sex for business favours; the female teacher who behaved inappropriately with the classmate of her 13-year old son. These are the stories of the men and women who did not keep their passion under control, committing crimes of a sexual nature.

Abstract: This concise book on agile and Scrum offers an alternative methodology for project planning in the communication branch in which flexibility is embraced and formalized. Dynamics and change are no longer obstacles, but simply elements of the method. Scrum was invented by two organization scholars and further developed in the information technology industry. Today, it is applied in many disciplines, but scarcely at all in the field of communication. That is expected to change swiftly. Scrum is now being applied experimentally in communication and users are highly enthusiastic.

Abstract: One of the most influential factors of the 21st century isthe Latino community-how the culture views, defines, and helps lead innovation in the United States. Abstract: Sven Lindqvist is one of our most original writers on race, colonialism, and genocide, and his signature approachuniting travelogues with powerful acts of historical excavationrenders his books devastating and unforgettable. Now, for the first time, Lindqvist's most beloved works are available in one beautiful and affordable volume with a new introduction by Adam Hochschild. The Dead Do Not Die includes the full unabridged text of "Exterminate All the Brutes", called "a book of stunning range and near genius" by David Levering Lewis. In this work, Lindqvist uses Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness as a point of departure for a haunting tour through the colonial past, retracing the steps of Europeans in Africa from the late eighteenth century onward and thus exposing the roots of genocide via his own journey through the Saharan desert. The full text of Terra Nullius is also included, for which Lindqvist traveled 7,000 miles through Australia in search of the lands the British had claimed as their own because it was inhabited by "lower races," the native Aboriginesnearly nine-tenths of whom were annihilated by whites. The shocking story of how "no man's land" became the province of the white man was called "the most original work on Australia and its treatment of Aboriginals I have ever read . . . marvelous" by Phillip Knightley, author of Australia.

Abstract: Offers insights into the hopes and aspirations of British Muslims from remarkably diverse ethnicities. In Britain's highly politicised social climate in the aftermath of the 7/7 London bombings, this book provides an in-depth understanding of British Muslim identity. Nahid Kabir has carried out over 200 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with young Muslims in five British cities: London, Leicester, Bradford, Leeds and Cardiff. By emphasising the importance of biculturalism, Kabir conveys a realistic and hopeful vision for their successful integration into British society.

Biographische Informationen Sebastian J. Abstract: Food and eating has always been endowed with meanings. It is one of the most visible and important symbols of identity and difference, uniting the members of a community and segregating them from other communities. This inclusion and exclusion can be observed not only in what they eat or what they are known to eat, but also how they eat, how they prepare and serve their food, and what happens after food is taken. The study of food politics and questions of identity and difference can, therefore, be a means of understanding the underlying social relations in any culture and its quiescent philosophy. This ethnographic work discusses the politics inherent in food among the Garos of Assam (India) and Bangladesh. In these two areas, they live as a minority, and with and in the peripheries of a dominant non-Garo culture. Thus, this book examines the ways in which Garos conceptualize themselves and the 'other' world through the microcosm of food - the most important need of all. It discusses, among other topics, how the concepts of Garo food versus non-Garo food find fruition in social reality and collective memory, as an identity marker.

Abstract: In crisp and accessible language, TheEffects of Globalization in Latin America, Africa, and Asia challenges conventional wisdom that often provides one-sided views of globalization. The book brings to light that which many scholars ignore: the symbiotic linkages within a global supranational regime consisting of MNCs, WTO, the IMF/World Bank, western media technology, and the lone superpower that are the principal actors in the global political economy.

Abstract: Consanguineous marriages have been practiced for hundreds of years, predominantly by Moslems. Although it is generally accepted among communities that the social advantages outweigh other, the rate of congenital malformations and genetic diseases among the offspring borne of consanguineous marriages is higher and an increase in sterility, rates of abortions, stillbirths and neonatal deaths has been suggested by some researchers. These problems result in a substantial economic burden within the communities involved in the practice. Strategies for reducing the frequency of consanguineous marriages include expansion of educational programs, promotion of genetic testing services, and research to identify the genes responsible for genetic defects. Nowadays, with the migration of large numbers of Moslems towards Western countries, consanguinity is becoming a practical issue in places where it was barely known, previously. This eBook serves as a guide for health care workers and counselors of the phenomenon and its associated problems. This eBook begins with an introduction of the topic from a social, legal and biological perspective. It then progresses to research about associated genetic disorders, reproductive and social awareness issues through the proceeding chapters. The eBook concludes with 2 chapters exploring strategies to counter the effects of consanguinity within the general population.

Abstract: This innovative volume challenges contemporary views on material culture by exploring the relationship between wrapping materials and practices and the objects, bodies, and places that define them. Using examples as diverse as baby swaddling, Egyptian mummies, Celtic tombs, lace underwear, textile clothing, and contemporary African silk, the dozen archaeologist and anthropologist contributors show how acts of wrapping and unwrapping are embedded in beliefs and thoughts of a particular time and place. Employing methods of artifact analysis, microscopy, and participant observation, the contributors provide a new lens on material culture and its relationship to cultural meaning.

Series Statement: Cases in Modern Chinese Business
    DDC: 306.360951
Abstract: Many people want to do business with China, but very few foreign business people have an understanding and appreciation of how business is actually conducted in the country. This book offers insights into the history, philosophy, and practice of business in China today. The book begins by asking several key questions about business in China: Why is it a common phenomenon in China that one prefers being a leader in a small organization to being led in a big one? Why is it common in Chinese enterprises that within an organization there is generally a bureaucracy to control a network of comparatively independent sub-units? There are different forms of self-organized sub-units within an enterprise, such as affiliated subsidiaries or self-directed teams, contracted out business units, independent local branches, profit-center departments, and internal startup teams. Why do Chinese enterprises always network with each other to realize an all-win situation? These cooperative networks include regional business groups, small enterprise networks, platform-based models, network consolidators, and industry networks characterized by one town focusing on a single industry. In exploring these questions, the book examines the form and structure of Chinese social networks and indigenous management. It looks at the origins and importance of Chinese management philosophies, including "Guanxi" management - a concept and practice crucial to understanding business in China and increasingly central to management teaching in China. Guanxi is examined in great detail and from various dynamics and perspectives. The book is based upon a series of lecturers given to management students at the prestigious Tsinghua University in Beijing. Therefore, it also offers an insight into what China's business leaders of the future are learning. (Series: Cases in Modern Chinese...

Abstract: In China, 'The Festival of February the Second' literally means the day of dragon's head-raising and, on this day, Chinese people pray for favorable weather and a bumper harvest for the year. This book - printed in an English-Chinese bilingual text - introduces the origin, development, implied meanings, and abundant features of this festival. As one of many traditional Chinese festivals, 'The Festival of February the Second' is less known outside China. Even many locals in China have forgotten this important festival, which used to be popular in rural areas. Originating from the countryside, it is deeply rooted in the agricultural era. Therefore, it has many aspects that are different to other festivals in China. The book offers an insight into a key part of China's festival heritage. (Series: Chinese Festival Culture) [Subject: Anthropology, Chinese Studies, Asian Studies, Cultural Studies].

Abstract: "We are our bodies", "we have our bodies", "we make our bodies". This "three-headed" axiom has made the body the "parasite" of modern culture. The individual that is fit for modernity was, and certainly still is, expected and encouraged to embrace its corporeal existence in order to find an answer to one of the most frequently asked questions in the modern Western world: "Who am I?" For those who live in Western societies, with a history of individualism, the temptation is to look inside oneself, to examine one's thoughts and feelings, as if self-identity is a treasure locked inside. The desire to change the skin one inhabits, to cite Almodòvar, has become "territorialized" in on-screen media, digital sites and social networks, shuffling the cards as if in an attempt to dance on the ruins of passing time. Everything is at play, everything is art. Madonna is like Michelangelo. Comic strips are like eight hundred page novels by Tolstoy. What is up for discussion is the advanced transformation of persons into spectators. The multiplication of screens creates a "visual party". The definition of the boundaries between the social sensorium and today's advanced technologies is the fundamental, and as yet unsolved, methodological problem arising from the contemporary "spatial turn" that is coming to maturity thanks to the re-orientation of the classical digital paradigm."Reclaiming the social throughout embodied practices" (Greenwood, 1994) is basically the ultimate objective of this book. The thinking, feeling and acting body will figure as prominently as the mind, cognition, and rationality in combining the framework of the research and the methodology underpinning its development. The body is, indeed, the origin of humans' most individual experiences and actions, since it is the point of application of the tuning and calibration of the senses and the...
Abstract: general training of social skills. The notion of "body in action in context" is, consequently, the methodological proposal that Beyond the Skin: The Boundaries between Bodies and Technologies in an Unequal World offers to sociology, in order to surpass the "new alliance" between human senses and the new media, an alliance staged by bodies moving faster than thought across the maps of contemporary mobile spaces.
