Kurzfassung: The eighteenth century saw more years of war than of peace. This book demonstrates that children participated in war as soldiers, as non-combatants, and as civilians. It also argues that juvenile imagery was an integral part of warfare, used to motivate soldiers to fight and to justify the command structure

Kurzfassung: 'The Politics of Unpaid Labour' introduces the theory of the politics of unpaid labour to advance understanding of inequality within the context of precarious work. It understands unpaid labour as the time and effort people invest to undertake tasks which relate to the work implicitly or explicitly assigned to them, but for which they are not paid. The book establishes a crucial link between unpaid labour's political dimensions and its role in fuelling emerging forms of precarious work characterized by persistent inequalities in a context of labour market reforms, societal shifts, and technological changes, and it reveals how these seemingly disparate elements intertwine, connecting the intricate dynamics of the social system's micro-level components to larger macro-level structural patterns

Kurzfassung: "The legacy of the student movements in Egypt in the 20th century makes some forms of political activity among Egyptian students, namely protests for national or regional causes, familiar and even expected. However, the significant neo-liberal turn in the Egyptian economy in the late 1990s changed the structure of higher education and with it the status and behaviour of students. The usual analytical lens used to examine Egyptian students' political activity by looking at protests, does not capture the realities of contemporary higher education nor the complexities of the impact of the major critical events of 2011 and 2013. This book uncovers politics and politicization processes in diverse locations where students act and organize such as student unions, partisan student organizations, student clubs and associations including simulation models, in addition to activist groups, by drawing on interviews conducted in Egypt between 2013 and 2015 with members of these groups and ethnographic observation of their activities. Proposing a dynamic theoretical framework to make sense of student politicization in authoritarian neo-liberal contexts marked by socio-political change, this book argues that students collectively and individually negotiated the scope of their political activities as well as the meanings they attributed to these activities. The resulting student politics were, not only diverse and unexpected, but reflected the intertwinement of the historical representation of students as leaders of the nation, the neoliberal imperative to prepare for a competitive job market, and the impact of the revolution of 2011 and of the post-2013 context"--

Why place ourselves under the sway of a concept and grant it the authority to shape our thought and conduct? Another conceptualization would carry different implications. What makes one way of thinking better than another? 'The Ethics of Conceptualization' develops a framework for concept appraisal. Its guiding idea is that to question the authority of concepts is to ask for reasons of a special kind: reasons for concept use, which tell us which concepts to adopt, adhere to, or abandon, thereby shoring up - or undercutting - the reasons for action and belief that guide our deliberations

He argues that to understand their compatibility, we need to better understand the dynamic way in which Islamic tradition has evolved relative to international human rights. Including analyses of different Muslim positions, Bassiouni identifies their merits and shortcomings and asks how we can rethink and answer open questions in human rights philosophy by bringing the resources of the Islamic tradition to bear upon them.

Kurzfassung: "Historically, the dynamics underlying contemporary Muslim human rights discourse and the related question of identity can be traced back to the second half of the nineteenth century. Faced with European superiority and aware of their own need for reform, Muslim intellectuals pondered how to explain the stagnation of Islamic societies and what initiatives were needed to bring about the desired progress. Many Muslims were troubled not only by Europe's material superiority, but also by the sense of inferiority they felt in the face of Europe's ideological defamation of Islamic societies. "Any person," wrote the French philosopher Ernest Renan in 1883, "with a modicum of instruction in the affairs of our time clearly sees the current inferiority of Muslim countries, the decadence of the states governed by Islam, the intellectual nonentity of the races that derive their culture and education solely from this religion." Thus, the idea of reform derived its impetus from an ideological challenge that saw the causes of Muslim stagnation as residing in Islam and identified the latter as inhibiting, or even blocking, the progress of Islamic societies. Accordingly, the crisis of the Muslim search for identity unfolded in response to the question of how to define oneself in relation to Europe and what role Islam should play in this regard. In a broader sense, Muslims were confronted with the basic questions of political philosophy: What principles should we live by, and where do we derive these principles from? Can the principles of a modern society be derived from Islam? Or is it necessary to refer to the ideas and institutions of Europe? To what extent can we then still define ourselves as Muslims in relation to Europe? In response to these questions, three broad currents of thought can be identified. 2.1 Trialogue of Identities Echoing the European position, a secularist school of thought believed that Muslims, by virtue of their religion, were intellectually incapable of developing progressive thought in the European sense. According to this view, Islam was fundamentally incompatible with science and modern civilization. Muslims should therefore accept European modernity as the ultimate frame of reference and assimilate to Europe as much as possible. Politically, this assimilationist stance became most prominent in Turkey. In contrast, a second, much broader current of thought, which might be called traditionalist, argued that the plight of Muslims was due to colonization and oppression by the European West. According to this view, the stagnation of Islamic societies was caused by the exercise of European imperial power, to which Muslims had fallen victim, so that adopting European ideas would be tantamount to intellectual capitulation. Rather, Muslims should seek and rediscover their strength in their own past. The only way to express one's true identity, according to this argument, is to return to one's own tradition"--

Kurzfassung: "Society is full of would-be 'change agents' - campaigners, government officials, enlightened business people, engaged intellectuals - set on improving public services, reforming laws and regulations, guaranteeing human rights, achieving a fairer deal for those on the sharp end, and greater recognition for any number of issues. Striking then, that not many universities have a Department of Change Studies, to which social activists can turn for advice and inspiration. Instead, scholarly discussions of change are fragmented with few conversations crossing disciplinary boundaries, rarely making it onto the radars of those actively seeking change. This book aims to bridge the gap between academia and practice. Drawing on first-hand examples and numerous new case studies and interviews with grassroots activists and organizations around the world, as well as Oxfam's unrivalled global experience and the author's forty years as activist, teacher and scholar, this second edition of How Change Happens explores the 'actors and factors' that drive change. Its starting point is the importance of understanding complex systems and the nature of power, and applying this to the institutions that activists seek to influence - social norms, states, politics, the international system and transnational corporations. It examines the role of civil society organizations, digital activism, leadership and advocacy in bringing about change, and how we - governments, organizations, businesses, leaders, campaigners and ordinary citizens - can make a difference."

Kurzfassung: Radicalisation has become an important part of the twenty-first-century security and political landscape. It is a seemingly ubiquitous term, employed by academics, policymakers, civil society actors, practitioners and media alike, in ever-expanding ways - describing everything from changing domestic social movements to the growth of international terrorism. This volume provides a comprehensive treatment of 'radicalisation': the processes during which individuals or groups adopt increasingly extreme political, social or religious beliefs, positions or aspirations, particularly in cases associated with the use of violence

Kurzfassung: The history of British Islam and British Muslims is a growing area of interest among historians and the general public. But, whilst Muslim women have featured in some research, their lives and experiences prior to the present day have remained obscure, if not 'hidden', in both academic and popular discussion. Uncovering Muslim women's experiences and contributions to society in past generations is essential for us to build a full picture of Muslim life in Britain, then and now. This book tells the stories of Muslim women who lived in Britain between the mid-nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries, from Victorian times to the years immediately after the Second World War - just before immigration profoundly affected the size and composition of Britain's Muslim communities

Kurzfassung: 'Dhobis of Delhi' is a saga covering more than four decades of interactions with an 'untouchable' caste - the Dhobis (washermen and washerwomen), who are among Delhi's oldest inhabitants. It describes their ways of life, economy, livelihood, struggles, and adaptation to the city's changing demographic, cultural, and politico-economic profile. Utilizing an experiential perspective and a gendered and feminist approach, the author elaborates on the Dhobi identity, which is focused on their community (biradari), and discusses their struggles to be identified as skilled professionals at par with others, rejecting at the same time the political identity of being Dalit.

Kurzfassung: Regime change in Libya (2011) and Iraq (2003) catapulted a host of sub-state actors to the fore, including tribes, which have emerged as influential political, security and social actors. But despite this increased role and visibility, tribes remain poorly understood. Often mistakenly associated with the 'periphery' or with 'pre-national' or 'pre-modern' forms of political organisation, they are routinely portrayed as the antithesis of the state. Yet tribes - the Middle East's oldest, most enduring and most controversial social entities - have proved able to adapt and evolve, entering into mutually beneficial relationships with various regimes. Based on interviews with tribal sheikhs, tribal representatives and other stakeholders, Alison Pargeter traces the role of the tribe in Libya and Iraq from the revolutionary nationalist period into the fraught transitions that followed.

Kurzfassung: Emily Davies was a central figure in the mid-Victorian women's movement. Formidably intelligent, fiercely determined, and an indefatigable campaigner and organiser, the socially and politically conservative Davies directed the first campaign for female suffrage in 1866-7. She was one of the first women elected to public office in 1870, campaigned successfully for the admission of girls to school leaving examinations, played a significant part in the reform of girls' secondary school provision, and established Girton College, Cambridge, Britain's first university-level college for women. This book combines the first scholarly biography of Davies with a radically new account of the mid-Victorian women's movement

Kurzfassung: 'The Human Factor' establishes a foundation for the study of ancient demography in the Iberian Peninsula, focusing on its largest province, Hispania Citerior/Tarraconensis. The authors take a multidisciplinary approach, compiling archaeological, epigraphic, architectonic, osteological, and genetic datasets. This comprehensive and detailed study of a single province is necessary to generate accurate demographic estimates and to compare it with datasets from other regions and historical periods. By examining the province of Hispania Citerior/Tarraconensis in depth, the authors provide a detailed understanding of demographic patterns, urbanism, and urbanization rates over time, and link them with the social, cultural, and economic factors that affected the Iberian Peninsula and the Western Mediterranean from the fourth century BC until the end of the Roman period.

Kurzfassung: How have sound and empire shaped one another historically? Acoustics of Empire recovers a sonic history that is bound up with imperial power and colonial rule. Bringing together contributions from historians, musicologists, anthropologists, and literary scholars, this book emphasizes the entangled histories of sound and empire. The intertwined legacies of sound and power are not simply historical curiosities; rather, they stand as formative influences in cultural modernity and its discontents that continue to shape the ways we hear and experience the world today.
Kurzfassung: "Acoustics of Empire articulates what we might call a cultural history of global acoustics in the Age of Empire. Increasingly, music and sound studies have turned their attention to questions of empire and postcolonial thought, raising new questions about the forms and circulation of cultural, technological, and military power as manifest in and through sound. However, most of this scholarship has focused on the twentieth century. Conversely, sound and media studies have made nineteenth century histories of science and technology a central part of their canonical repertoire, but largely overlooked the ways in which these technological developments emerged from contexts of empire. Examining histories of sound, listening practices, and audiovisual technologies of the Long Nineteenth Century through the lens of geopolitical power, Acoustics of Empire recovers a history of sound that is bound up with, even as it elides, questions of imperial and colonial rule. Bringing together contributions from historians, musicologists, anthropologists, and literary critics, the book emphasizes historical moments in which academic disciplines like musicology and history were created at the same moment and often in connection with global empires"--

Kurzfassung: This book is a study of the production and consumption of popular social history in mid-twentieth century Britain. It explores how non-academic historians, many of them women, developed a new breed of social history after the First World War, identified as the 'history of everyday life'. The 'history of everyday life' was a pedagogical construct based on the perceived educational needs of the new, mass democracy that emerged after 1918. It was popularized to ordinary people in educational settings, through books, in classrooms and museums, and on BBC radio. After tracing its development and dissemination between the 1920s and the 1960s, this book argues that 'history of everyday life' declined in the 1970s not because academics invented an alternative 'new' social history, but because bottom-up social change rendered this form of popular social history untenable in the changing context of mass education. Histories of Everyday Life ultimately uses the subject of history to demonstrate how profoundly the advent of mass education shaped popular culture in Britain after 1918, arguing that we should see the twentieth century as Britain's educational century.

Kurzfassung: In 'The Afterlife of Race', Lionel McPherson demystifies the Western concept of 'race' and reframes race ideology in America as a caste device that sponsors absurd pretexts for inherited slavery, enforced segregation and the wilful nonrepair of historical injustice. This reframing paves the way for an anti-caste vision of social equality that emphasizes the moral importance of Black American national specificity - not general antiracism, identity politics, or diversity 'of colour'.

Kurzfassung: In recent decades, the lives of people in their late teens and twenties have changed so dramatically that a new stage of life has developed. In his provocative work, Jeffrey Jensen Arnett has identified the period of emerging adulthood as distinct from both the adolescence that precedes it and the young adulthood that comes in its wake. Arnett's new paradigm has received enormous worldwide scholarly attention. On the 20th anniversary of the publication of his groundbreaking work, this third edition of 'Emerging Adulthood' fully updates and expands Arnett's findings, and adds a new chapter on cultural and international variations.

Kurzfassung: During the 16 & 17th centuries, English numerical practices underwent a complex transformation with wide-ranging impacts on English society. At the beginning of the early modern period, English men & women believed that God had made humans universally numerate, although numbers were not central to their everyday lives. Over the next two centuries, rising literacy rates & the increasing availability of printed books revolutionized modes of arithmetical practice & education. Ordinary English people began to use numbers & quantification to explain abstract phenomena as diverse as the relativity of time, the probability of chance events, & the constitution of human populations. These changes reflected their participation in broader early modern European cultural & intellectual developments such as the Reformation & the Scientific Revolution.

Special attention is also given to Claudia Jones and Audre Lorde, both of whom implicitly and indirectly engage with 'The Second Sex'. Kurzfassung: A number of scholars within the social sciences and the humanities have elaborated on the cultural and psychological dimensions of living through social, economic and political crises. Still, developments during the last decade have created an awareness that something fundamental of the human condition is at stake, especially for the young generation growing up today, with a devastating environmental crisis, globalization, large scale migration, the impact of digitalization and so forth. The consequence has been increased polarization between nations, communities, and people, where the dialogue for human understanding seems to vanish. The basic rationale underlying this book is that education is a key social system where learning to take different perspectives, to stimulate dialogue and intersubjectivity are fundamental for social and cultural development. We bring together scholars from North-America and Europe, but with relevance on a global scale. The four sections in the book cover theoretical explorations referring to the power and generativity of the writings of the Norwegian scholar Ragnar Rommetveit (section 1), diverse chapters and examples on the societal conditions for dialogue and the role of education (section 2), empirical illustration on the role of digital technologies (section 3), and micro-analytical studies of learning dialogues at home, in kindergarten and school (section 4).

Kurzfassung: "This book offers the first full account of Harriet Tubman's Civil War service and the Combahee River Raid. It details how Tubman commanded a ring of spies, scouts, and pilots and participated in military expeditions behind Confederate lines. It also recounts the story of enslaved families living in bondage and fighting for their freedom, using their own distinct and individual voices. The book uses more than 175 US Civil War pension files of the regiments of Second South Carolina Volunteers, including Tubman's. It is based on original documentation and written by a descendent of the enslaved men and women who fought in it, and in the process liberated themselves"--

Kurzfassung: In "Repression in the Digital Age", Anita R. Gohdes provides an in-depth look into the relationship between digital technologies and state violence. Drawing on original data, Gohdes argues that mass access to the Internet presents governments who fear for their political survival with a set of response options, which in turn support different forms of violence by state forces. As digital communication has become a bedrock of modern opposition and protest movements, Repression in the Digital Age breaks new ground in examining state repression in the information age.
