    Abstract: This book analyzes key elements of the trade performance of Brazil, Russia, India, Indonesia, China and South Africa (the BRIICS) in relation to the rest of the world, focusing on trade and other policies influencing that performance. Developments in global trade policy are reviewed, notably the impact of preferential trade agreements on the multilateral system, and patterns of world trade are described using both indices that reveal networks of trading relations and more standard modeling results. As well as the global analysis, the book also presents a separate chapter for each of the BRIICS, examining the key development and trade issues in each of the six countries over the past few years.--Publisher's description

    Abstract: The globalisation of production processes characterises the current phase of globalisation. Participation in global value chains (GVCs) can bring stability to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and allow them to increase productivity and expand their business. This OECD report identifies the ways in which governments, the business community, and international organisations can facilitate SMEs' gainful participation in global value chains through policies, practices and targeted support programmes. It presents the findings of case studies carried out in five industries (the automotive sector, scientific and precision instruments, software, film production and distribution and tourism).

Gestützt auf Forschungs- und Analysearbeiten aus den 30 OECD-Mitgliedstaaten wird die zunehmende Bedeutung des Humankapitals für den Einzelnen und für die Gesellschaft bei der Bewältigung des sozialen und wirtschaftlichen Wandels erläutert. Ferner wird untersucht, inwiefern es den Ländern gelingt oder auch nicht gelingt, die Menschen Zeit ihres Lebens durch die Bereitstellung von Aus- und Weiterbildungsangeboten zu unterstützen. - Welchen Stellenwert haben Schule und Universität? Wie lassen sich Ungleichheiten in der Ausbildung beseitigen? Keeley erläutert das Konzept Humankapital, das Wissen, Qualifikationen, Kompetenzen und weitere Eigenschaften umfasst, als Lösungsansatz für wirtschaftliche und gesellschaftliche Herausforderungen. Das Konzept Humankapital beschreibt nach Definition der OECD Wissen, Qualifikationen, Kompetenzen und sonstige Eigenschaften, die es dem Einzelnen ermöglichen, persönliches, soziales und wirtschaftliches Wohlergehen zu erzeugen. Bildung ist in diesem Zusammenhang ein Schlüsselbegriff: Welchen Stellenwert haben Schule und Universität? Wie lassen sich Ungleichheiten in der Ausbildung beseitigen? Wie wichtig ist die Erziehung vor und außerhalb der Schule? Brian Keeley erläutert in seinem Buch das Konzept Humankapital als Lösungsansatz für wirtschaftliche und gesellschaftliche Herausforderungen unserer Zeit und skizziert auf Basis der Forschungs- und Analysetätigkeit der OECD, wie Bildung und Erziehung die Entwicklung sowohl des einzelnen Menschen als auch der gesamten Gesellschaft bestimmt.
