Abstract: "As Eurasia and the adjacent territories become more important to the world, there is increasing interest from international powers, accompanied by attempts to give institutional form to traditional economic and security links within the region. This book includes a range of substantive work from scholars based in the region, offering contrasting perspectives on the process of Eurasian integration and its place in the world. Chapters consider economic, political, social and security developments, with notable studies of the major countries involved in the development of the Eurasian Economic Union. The work also examines the connections between the region and China, greater Asia and the European Union. It outlines the varying dynamics, with populations growing in Central Asia while at best stagnant elsewhere. The book discusses the increasing strategic significance of the region and explores how the new post-Soviet states are growing in national cohesion and political self-confidence. Above all, the book examines the concept of 'Eurasia', outlining the debates about the concept and how various aspects of the legacy of 'Eurasianism' contribute to contemporary plans for integration. The book argues that although regional integration is very much a popular idea in our age, with the potential for economic benefits and increased international influence, in practice contemporary projects for Eurasian integration have been highly ambiguous and contested. Nevertheless, significant steps have been taken towards the creation of the Eurasian Economic Union. The book analyses developments to date, noting the achievements as well as the challenges. "--

Abstract: "This book explores the concept of a substantive right to equality and considers the underlying rationale behind the right to equality and non-discrimination within the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and the EU. The book sets out a theoretical basis for the right to substantive equality before undertaking a careful analysis of the jurisprudence of both the European Court of Human Rights and the European Court of Justice in order to examine how the two Courts have approached the question through their case-law. The historical evolution of the prohibition of discrimination in the two legal orders is traced in order to demonstrate how the human interest safeguarded by a right to equality has developed and continues to develop within the jurisprudence of the Strasbourg and Luxembourg Courts. The book demonstrates how the right to substantive equality is becoming increasingly relevant. It shows how, despite the profound differences between the scope of ECHR and EU equality law, the two Courts have been willing to move beyond the apparent limitations of the written legal framework in several instances with a view to extending the personal and the material scope of what appears to be an emerging human right to equality"--

Abstract: "The adoption of the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (CPRD) by the United Nations in 2006 marked a major watershed. The CRPD is the first comprehensive and binding treaty on the rights of people with disabilities. It establishes the right of people with disabilities to equality, dignity, autonomy, full participation as well as specific rights including the right to live in the community, supported decision-making and inclusive education. Prior to the CRPD, international law had provided only limited protections to people with disabilities, although some countries had begun to incorporate rights protections into their respective domestic legislation. This book analyses the development of disability rights as an international human rights movement, in selected countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East as well as the United States. The book begins with an examination of the status of people with disabilities under international law prior to the adoption of the CPRD and follows the development of human rights protections through the drafting process of the CRPD. People with disabilities, like women and children before them, waged a battle to enforce their rights on the international stage against a backdrop of changing international norms. The book highlights four areas the right to legal capacity (article 12), the right to liberty and freedom from torture (articles 14 and 15), the right to live in the community (article 19), and the right to inclusive education, in order to the transformation from the charity/deficit/medical model of disability to the human rights mode. These areas are analyzed from a comparative perspective including a discussion of the laws, policies, and practices in selected countries in order to show the success of the CRPD in achieving protections depends on the extent to which individual countries begin to enforce domestic laws and policies and the extent to which various societies change their attitudes about people with disabilities"--

Abstract: "Jerusalem is a city with a singular nature. Home to three religions, it contains spiritual meaning for people the world over; it is at once a tourist destination and a location with a complex political reality. Tourism, therefore, is an integral part of Jerusalem's development and its political conflicts. The book traces tourism and pilgrimage to Jerusalem from the late Ottoman era, through the British Mandate, during the period of the divided city, and to the reunification of the city under Israeli rule. Throughout, the city's evolution is shown to be intertwined with its tourist industry, as tourist sites, accommodations, infrastructure, and services transform the city's structures and open spaces. At the same time, tourism is wielded by various parties in an effort to gain political recognition, to bolster territorial control, or to garner support. The city's future and the role tourism can play in it are examined. While the construction of a "security fence" will have many implications on Jerusalem's tourist industry, steps are proposed to minimize the effects of the security fence and optimize tourism. Written by leading academics, this title will be valuable reading students, academics and researchers in the fields of tourism, religious studies, geography, history, cultural studies, and anthropology"--

Abstract: "The Routledge Handbook of Gender and Development provides a comprehensive statement and reference point for gender and development policy making and practice in an international and multi-disciplinary context. Specifically, it provides critical reviews and appraisals of the current state of gender and development and considers future trends. It includes theoretical and practical approaches as well as empirical studies. The international reach and scope of the Handbook and the contributors' experiences allow engagement with and reflection upon these bridging and linking themes, as well as the an examination of the politics and policy of how we think about and practice gender and development. Organized into eight inter-related sections, the Handbook contains over 50 contributions from leading scholars, looking at conceptual and theoretical approaches, environmental resources, poverty and families, women and health related services, migration and mobility, the effect of civil and international conflict, and international economies and development. Abstract: "As one of the originators of the concept of bioregionalism, Peter Berg (1937-2011) is a founding figure of contemporary environmental thought. As arguably the nation's first post-environmentalist, in the 1970s Berg perceived the negative direction the environmental movement was taking and began to articulate a more positive and pro-active alternative, centred on the concept of bioregions. This book introduces readers to the biospheric vision and post-environmental genius of Berg, with original tributes from sixteen prominent writers and thinkers, whose reflections illuminate facets of Berg's continuing importance and offer fresh angles on bioregionalism"--
Abstract: "Bioregionalism asks us to reimagine ourselves and the places where we live in ecological terms and to harmonize human activities with the natural systems that sustain life. As one of the originators of the concept of bioregionalism, Peter Berg (1937-2011) is a founding figure of contemporary environmental thought. The Biosphere and the Bioregion: Essential Writings of Peter Berg introduces readers to the biospheric vision and post-environmental genius of Berg. From books and essays to published interviews, this selection of writings represents Berg's bioregional vision and its global, local, urban, and rural applications. The Biosphere and the Bioregion provides a highly accessible introduction to bioregional philosophy, making Berg's paradigm available as a guiding vision and practical "greenprint" for the twenty-first century. This valuable compilation lays the groundwork for future research by offering the first-ever comprehensive bibliography of Berg's publications and should be of interest to students and scholars in the inter-disciplinary fields of environmental humanities, environment and sustainability studies, as well as political ecology, environmental sociology and anthropology"--

Abstract: "This exciting new volume examines the development of market performance from Antiquity until the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. Efficient market structures are agreed by most economists to serve as evidence of economic prosperity, and to be prerequisites for further economic growth. However, this is the first study to examine market performance as a whole, over such a large time period. Presenting a hitherto unknown and inaccessible corpus of data from ancient Babylonia, this international set of contributors are for the first time able to offer an in-depth study of market performance over a period of 2,500 years. The contributions focus on the market of staple crops, as they were crucial goods in these societies. Over this entire period, all papers provide a similar conceptual and methodological framework resting on a common definition of market performance combined with qualitative and quantitative analyses resting on new and improved price data. In this way, the book is able to combine analysis of the Babylonian period with similar work on the Roman, Early-and Late Medieval and Early Modern period. Bringing together input from assyriologists, ancient historians, economic historians and economists, this volume will be crucial reading for all those with an interest in ancient history, economic history and economics. Abstract: "The right of indigenous peoples to Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) in relation to natural resource extraction in their territories is a principle that is increasingly recognised by intergovernmental organizations, international bodies, conventions and international human rights law as well as in the domestic law of some States. This book offers a comprehensive overview of the status of Free Prior and Informed Consent under international human rights law, considering the main controversies, obstacles and challenges associated with its recognition and implementation. The book examines the relationship between Free Prior and Informed Consent and territorial, resource and governance rights. The historical basis for FPIC is considered as well as the legitimacy of the dominant doctrines of exclusive State ownership of subsoil resources. The book argues that FPIC constitutes an emerging norm of international law with a tipping point having been reached in terms of the requirements recognition, both within and beyond the human rights regime. It draws on emerging jurisprudence from around the world, as well as evolving industry standards and policies, to illustrate the growing recognition of the fact that respect for the consent requirement is fundamental to securing indigenous peoples self-governance and territorial rights"--

The role of indigenous peoples' consent in legitimising title to territory -- The genesis of indigenous consent under international law and its role in legitimishing title to territory -- Nineteenth-century positivists and divergence between the role of consent in theory and practice -- Part II. Implementation of free prior and informed consent : challenges and opportunities -- The evolving practice of States and international organisations -- FPIC and the corporate obligation to respect indigenous peoples' rights -- Operationalisation of consent, challenges, limitations and opportunities -- Conclusion.

Abstract: With the full effects of the Great Recession still unfolding, this collection of essays analyses the gendered economic impacts of the crisis. The volume, from an international set of contributors, argues that gender-differentiated economic roles and responsibilities within households and markets can potentially influence the ways in which men and women are affected in times of economic crisis. Looking at the economy through a gender lens, the contributors investigate the antecedents and consequences of the ongoing crisis as well as the recovery policies adopted in selected countries. There are case studies devoted to Latin America, transition economies, China, India, South Africa, Turkey, and the USA. Topics examined include unemployment, the job-creation potential of fiscal expansion, the behavioural response of individuals whose households have experienced loss of income, social protection initiatives, food security and the environment, shedding of jobs in export-led sectors, and lessons learned thus far. From these timely contributions, students, scholars, and policymakers are certain to better understand the theoretical and empirical linkages between gender equality and macroeconomic policy in times of crisis.

Abstract: This book presents new research on the capacity of big cities to generate new tourism areas as visitors discover and help create new urban experiences off the beaten track. It examines similarities and differences in these processes in a group of established world cities located in the global circuits of tourism. The cities featured are Berlin, New York, London, Paris, and Sydney. In these cities experienced city visitors are contributing to the 'discovery' of new places to visit. Many neighbourhoods close to the historic centre and to traditional attractions offer the mix of cultural differen

Abstract: "This volume provides a collection of critical new perspectives on social capital theory by examining how social values, power relationships, and social identity interact with social capital. This book seeks to extend this theory into what have been largely under-investigated domains, and, at the same time, address long-standing, classic questions in the literature concerning the forms, determinants and consequences of social capital. Social capital can be understood in terms of social norms and networks. It manifests itself in patterns of trust, reciprocity, and cooperation. The authors argue that the degree to which and the different ways in which people exhibit these distinctively social behaviours depend on how norms and networks elicit their values, reflect power relationships, and draw on their social identities. This volume accordingly adopts a variety of different concepts and measures that incorporate the variety of contextually-specific factors that operate on social capital formation. In addition, it adopts an interdisciplinary outlook that combines a wide range of social science disciplines and methods of social research. Our objective is to challenge standard rationality theory explanations of norms and networks which overlook the role of values, power and identity. This volume appeals to researchers and students in multiple social sciences, including economics, sociology, political science, social psychology, history, public policy, and international relations that employ social capital concepts and methods in their research; be seen as a set of new extensions of social capital theory in connection with its themes of social values, power, and identity that would advance the scholarly literature on social norms and networks"--

Abstract: "Massive demographic and economic changes over the last three decades mean that cities that have typically been highly profiled within urban studies are no longer reflective of the hubs of urbanization, or contemporary global urban problems. This Handbook offers a shift in orientation bringing into conversation a wide array of cities across the Global South, exploring the ordinary city, the mega city and the peripheral city, with discussion of cities that have not previously been the object of scholarly reflection. The Handbook assesses what a geographical corrective in representation, process and voice might mean for urban analysis and theory. Profiling an emergent and diverse body of work on cities from physical, social and economic perspectives, it draws on conflicting and divergent debates to open up discussion on the precise meaning of the city in, or of, the Global South. The notion that the definition of the global South is fluid and increasingly contested is embraced within this Handbook, both geographically and conceptually. This Southern (re)framing of urban analysis challenges the intellectual status quo and makes way for new modes of illuminating the drivers of urban change that are typically associated with Southern urban realties"--

Abstract: "The thriving and well-established field of Law and Society (also referred to as Sociolegal Studies) has diverse methodological influences; it draws on social-scientific and arts-based methods. The approach of scholars researching and teaching in the field often crosses disciplinary borders, but, broadly speaking, Law and Society scholarship goes behind formalism to investigate how and why law operates, or does not operate as intended, in society. By exploring law's connections with broader social and political forces--both domestic and international-- scholars gain valuable perspectives on ideology, culture, identity, and social life. Law and Society scholarship considers both the law in contexts, as well as contexts in law. Law and Society flourishes today, perhaps as never before. Academic thinkers toil both on the mundane and the local, as well as the global, making major advances in the ways in which we think both about law and society. Especially over the last four decades, scholarly output has rapidly burgeoned, and this new title from Routledge's acclaimed Critical Concepts in Law series answers the need for an authoritative reference collection to help users make sense of the daunting quantity of serious research and thinking.Edited by the leading scholars in the field, Law and Society brings together in four volumes the vital classic and contemporary contributions. Volume I is dedicated to historical antecedents and precursors. The second volume covers methodologies and crucial themes. The third volume assembles key works on legal processes and professional groups, while the final volume of the collection focuses on substantive areas. Together, the volumes provide a one-stop 'mini library' enabling all interested researchers, teachers, and students to explore the origins of this thriving subdiscipline, and to gain a thorough understanding of where it is today"--

It uses court transcriptions and observations to discuss how the most contentious marriage-related issues - consent and age of spouses, dower, polygamy, and divorce - are adjudicated. The solutions proposed by different legal systems are reviewed , and some broader questions are addressed: how Islamic principles are harmonized with norms based on gender equality, how parties bargain strategically in and out of court, and how Muslim diasporas align their Islamic worldview with a Western normative narrative"--

Abstract: "Although nomadic peoples are scattered worldwide and have highly heterogeneous lifestyles, they face similar threats to their mobile livelihood and survival. Commonly, nomadic peoples are facing pressure from the predominant sedentary world over mobility, land rights, water resources, access to natural resources, and migration routes. Adding to these traditional problems, rapid growth in the extractive industry and the need for the exploitation of the natural resources are putting new strains on nomadic lifestyles. This book provides an innovative rights-based approach to the issue of nomadism looking at issues including discrimination, segregation, freedom of movement, land rights, cultural and political rights, and effective management of natural resources. Jeremie Gilbert analyses the extent to which human rights law is able to provide protection for nomadic peoples to perpetuate their own way of life and culture, and asks why such protection should be granted. The book questions whether the current human rights regime is able to protect nomadic peoples, and highlights the lacuna that currently exists in international human rights law in relation to nomadic peoples. It goes on to propose avenues for the development of specific rights for nomadic peoples, offering a new reading on freedom of movement in the context of nomadic peoples and their rights to land and natural resources"--

Abstract: "Nowhere is the connection between society and the environment more evident and potentially more harmful for the future of world than in Asia. In recent years, the rapid development of countries with very large populations has led to a huge increase in environmental problems. This handbook provides a comprehensive survey of the cultural, social and policy contexts of environmental change across East Asia. As climate change related threats to society increase, the book strongly argues the need for increased environmental consciousness in Asian societies. This book is an essential companion for students, scholars, policy makers and researchers working on environmental issues in Asia"--

Abstract: "In contrast with the progressive dilution of religions predicted by traditional liberal and Marxist approaches, religions remain important for many people, even in Europe, the most secularised continent. In the context of increasingly culturally-diverse societies, this calls for a reinterpretation of the secular legacy of the Enlightenment and also for an updating of democratic institutions. This book focuses on a central question: are the classical secularist arrangements well-equipped to tackle the challenge of fast-growing religious pluralism? Or should we move to new post-secular arrangements when dealing with pluralism in Europe? Offering an interdisciplinary approach that combines political theory and legal analysis, the authors tackle two interrelated facets of this controversial question. They begin by exploring the theoretical perspective, asking what post-secularism is and looking at its relation to secularism. The practical consequences of this debate are then examined, focusing on case-law through four empirical case studies. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of political theory, philosophy, religion and politics, European law, human rights, legal theory and socio-legal studies"--

Abstract: "Lively debates around property, access to resources, legal rights and the protection of livelihoods have unfolded in Vietnam since the economic reforms of 1986. Known as Doi Moi (changing to the new), these have gradually transformed the country from a socialist state to a society in which a communist party presides over a neoliberal economy. By exploring the complex relationship between property, the state, society and the market, this book demonstrates how both developmental issues and state-society relations in Vietnam can be explored through the prism of property relations and property rights. The essays in this collection demonstrate how negotiations over property are deeply enmeshed with dynamics of state formation, and covers debates over the role of the state and its relationship to various levels of society, the intrusion of global forces into the lives of marginalized communities and individuals, and how community norms and standards shape and reshape national policy and laws"--Provided by publisher
