Abstract: ‘People are on the move, and so is technology. In this turbulent account of a breathtaking global range, we discover a treasure trove of bottom-up case studies on community-based social media use. Using the lens of migration we get a unique insight into diaspora networks and the rise of conflicts in the digital realm. The collected stories prove that the public sphere is no longer a given and is being rebuilt as we speak--on the net.’ - Geert Lovink, Institute of Network Cultures, the Netherlands ‘Through a series of diverse and intriguing cross disciplinary case studies of digital activism set against the background of migration and austerity this vibrant collection of essays problematises the idea of the digital public sphere. What emerges is a demonstration of the nuances of digital activism and the range of disciplinary theoretical resources implicated in the study of the digital public sphere.’ - Peter Lunt, University of Leicester, UK ‘With breathtaking conceptual and geographical scope, this volume explodes our notion of digital politics. In its comprehensive approach to studying technology as narratives, users and infrastructures in crisis and conflict situations, this carefully curated book provokes lively dialogue about risks and opportunities of our contemporary public sphere’ - Jonathan Ong, University of Leicester, UK Bringing together contributions from the fields of sociology, media and cultural studies, arts, politics, science and technology studies, political communication theory and popular culture studies, this volume engages both with theoretical debates and detailed empirical studies, showcasing how the public sphere is transformed by digital media, and in turn how this digital public sphere shapes and is shaped by debates surrounding crisis, conflict, migration and culture. Case studies from Bulgaria, Nigeria, China, Greece, Italy, Cyprus, UK, Mexico and India are discussed in detail

Abstract: In this book, Jo Scott shares writing and documentation from her practice as research (PaR) project, which explored and analysed a mode of performance she developed, called live intermediality. The book offers a much-needed example of fully developed writing in relation to a practice as research (PaR) project. Weaving together theory, documentation and critical reflection, it offers fresh insights into both the process and presentation of PaR work, as well as theories around intermediality in performance, the role and actions of the live media performer and how live media events are created. It can be read alongside Robin Nelson’s 2013 text, Practice as Research in the Arts, as it demonstrates how Nelson’s model for PaR can be applied and developed. It also includes a set of online videos and commentaries, which complement and reflect on the writing in the core text. Joanne Scott is a live media practitioner-researcher and lecturer in performance at the University of Salford, UK. Her research explores the creation, activation and experience of live media events. This is her first book and arises from her doctoral research in live intermediality, at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London, UK

Abstract: Media Events: A Critical Contemporary Approach proposes an interdisciplinary and multicultural approach of Dayan and Katz's theory of media events (1992) by applying it to contemporary situations. The contributing authors come from a range of countries (UK, USA, Mexico, Germany, Finland, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Ukraine) and analyse the theory of media events from different perspectives, incorporating social media and offering a re-positioning of Dayan and Katz's theory of media events. By bringing new perspectives into this field, the proposed volume is an important contribution as it grounds the intervention and rethinking of the theory into further empirical research. This volume has the potential to function as a 'cross-generational' link between one of the 'early classics' of media and communication studies on the one hand and the present generation of researchers on the other

Abstract: This book examines the role of emotions in contemporary TV series. Over the past 20 years, TV fiction has become one of the most powerful and influential trends in popular culture. Shows such as Mad Men, Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, Lost and The Wire have created a vigorous televisual landscape where innovations in narrative form, aesthetic engagement and ethical concerns have raised TV entertainment to new heights. What makes this volume unique is its interdisciplinary approach, as the series are analysed from the perspective of Television Studies, Literature, Sociology, Philosophy and Media Studies. Key concepts developed include the relation between moral emotion and character identification, how serial narrative builds into 'affective moments' as a distinctive mode of aesthetic experience, the politics of emotion in collective identities, the intersection of gender and emotions, and how popular genres such as terror films, the thriller and science fiction manage the 'emotional turn' that postmodernism has made visible.

Abstract: Conventional wisdom views globalization as a process that heralds the diminishing role or even 'death' of the state and the rise of transnational media and transnational consumption. Global Media and National Policies questions those assumptions and shows not only that the nation-state never left but that it is still a force to be reckoned with. With contributions that look at global developments and developments in specific parts of the world, it demonstrates how nation-states have adapted to globalization and how they still retain key policy instruments to achieve many of their policy objectives. This book argues that the phenomenon of media globalization has been overstated, and that national governments remain key players in shaping the media environment, with media corporations responding to the legal and policy frameworks they deal with at a national level.

Abstract: The Transformation of Television Sport: New Methods, New Rules examines how developments in technology, broadcasting rights and regulation determine what sport we see on television, where we can see it and what the final output looks and sounds like. The book provides a missing supply side perspective, including a comparison of the development of sport and television in the US and the UK. The growth of global corporate sponsorship through to league and federation controlled television coverage is also mapped. Featuring new case studies, including the NFL and Premier League, three critical pre-production processes are unpacked. Milne examines the challenges faced by broadcasters and the consequences for independent television sports production companies and the day-to-day work of sports producers and directors. As the value of broadcasting rights continue to soar, the book provides a timely insight to what has happened to television sport and why it matters

Abstract: This book brings the emergent interest in social class and inequality to the field of television studies. It reveals how the new visibility of class matters in serial television functions aesthetically and examines the cultural class politics articulated in these programmes. This ground-breaking volume argues that reality and quality TV’s intricate politics of class entices viewers not only to grapple with previously invisible socio-economic realities but also to reconsider their class alignment. The stereotypical ways of framing class are now supplemented by those dedicated to exposing the economic and socio-psychological burdens of the (lower) middle class. The case studies in this book demonstrate how sophisticated narrative techniques coincide with equally complex ways of exposing class divisions in contemporary American life and how the examined shows disrupt the hegemonic order of class. The volume therefore also invites a rethinking of conventional models of social stratification

Abstract: Alison Horbury investigates the reprisal of the myth of Persephone - a mother-daughter plot of separation and initiation - in post-feminist television cultures where, she argues, it functions as a symptom expressing a complex around the question of sexual difference - what Lacan calls 'sexuation', where this question has been otherwise foreclosed.

Abstract: Media Boundaries and Conceptual Modelling forms part of the humanities tradition by facing one of the fundamental problems since antiquity: how different media represent the world we live in. It intersects also with the digital by addressing the problem with the help of a digital humanities method: computer assisted conceptual modelling. And it acknowledges the spatial turn by investigating the boundary between what has traditionally been the two main media for representation of geospatial information: texts and maps. It contributes to the further development of digital humanities and bridges the two areas of digital humanities and intermedia studies. Further, it strengthens the theoretical foundation for research and teaching in spatial digital humanities. The book meets the lack of critical discussion of the practice of digital mapping, offering a theoretically based understanding of such practices from a humanities perspective. More generally, it contributes to the theoretical discussion of modelling in digital humanities.
