Abstract: Introduction : Encountering Buddhism -- A Modern History of Buddhist Encounters in Chiang Mai -- The Agency of Buddhist Monks in the Tourism Landscape -- Religious Others in the Buddhist Eye -- Buddhist Spaces of Missionization -- Self-Transformation and Buddhist Authenticity through Volunteer Tourism.
Abstract: "Temples are everywhere in Chiang Mai, filled with tourists as well as saffron-robed monks of all ages. The monks participate in daily urban life here as elsewhere in Thailand, where Buddhism is promoted, protected, and valued as a tourist attraction. Yet this mountain city offers more than a fleeting, commodified tourist experience, as the encounters between foreign visitors and Buddhist monks can have long-lasting effects on both parties. These religious contacts take place where economic motives, missionary zeal, and opportunities for cultural exchange coincide. Brooke Schedneck incorporates fieldwork and interviews with student monks and tourists to examine the innovative ways that Thai Buddhist temples offer foreign visitors spaces for religious instruction and popular in-person Monk Chat sessions in which tourists ask questions about Buddhism. Religious Tourism in Northern Thailand also considers how Thai monks perceive other religions and cultures and how they represent their own religion when interacting with tourists, resulting in a revealing study of how religious traditions adapt to an era of globalization."

Abstract: "Global Islam-A Very Short Introduction looks at the methods used by individuals, organizations, and states to spread multiple versions of Islam around the world. Since the late nineteenth century, publications, missions, congresses, and pilgrimages have contributed to the communication and evolution of Islam. At the start of the twentieth century, the infrastructure of the European empire allowed for the widespread communication of Islamic beliefs. During a period of secularism in the mid-twentieth century, global Islam became more accessible and, in some cases, more political. How have today's broadcasting and smartphone technologies changed the face of global Islam? Will communication technologies reconcile the contradictions between variations of the faith, or will they create new ones?"--

Rethinking marketisation -- From mediatisation to hyper-mediatisation -- The marketisation of religion -- Indonesia: from ratio to market Islam -- From Pope to coach: marketed institutions, re-invented traditions -- Conclusion. Thinking a changing world.
Abstract: "This book argues that the last four decades have seen profound and important changes in the nature and social location of religion, and that those changes are best understood when cast against the associated rise of consumerism and neoliberalism. These transformations are often misunderstood and underestimated, namely because the study of religion remains dependent on the secularisation paradigm which can no longer provide a sufficiently fruitful framework for analysis. The book challenges diagnoses of transience and fragmentation by proposing an alternative narrative and set of concepts for understanding the global religious landscape. The present situation is framed as the result of a shift from a National-Statist to a Global-Market regime of religion. Adopting a holistic perspective that breaks with the current specialisation tendencies, it charts the emergence of the State and the Market as institutions and ideas related to social order, as well as their changing rapports from classical modernity to today. Breaking with a tradition of Western-centeredness, the book offers probing enquiries into Indonesia and a synthesis of global and Western trends. This book offers a bold new vision for the social scientific study of religion and will be of great interest to all scholars of the Sociology and Anthropology of religion, as well as Religious Studies in general"--

Abstract: "The spread of Islam and the process of Islamisation (meaning both conversion to Islam and the adoption of Muslim culture) is explored in the 25 chapters of this volume. Taking a comparative perspective, both the historical trajectory of Islamisation and the methodological problems in its study are addressed, with coverage moving from Africa to China and from the 7th century to the start of the colonial period in 1800. The volume is divided into five sections on (i) theoretical approaches to Islamisation, (ii) the Arab lands and Africa, (iii) Andalus, Anatolia and the Balkans, (iv) Iran, Central Asia and India and (v) Southeast Asia and East Asia. It addresses key questions including what is meant by Islamisation? To what extent was the spread of Islam as a religion bound up with the spread of Muslim culture? To what extent are Islamisation and conversion parallel processes? How is Islamisation connected to Arabisation? What role do vernacular Muslim languages play in the promotion of Muslim culture? The broad, comparative perspective allows readers to develop a thorough understanding of the process of Islamisation over 11 centuries of its history."--Back cover

Abstract: The Society of Jesus, commonly known as the Jesuits, is the most successful and enduring global missionary enterprise in history. Founded by Ignatius Loyola in 1540, the Jesuit order has preached the Gospel, managed a vast educational network, and shaped the Catholic Church, society, and politics in all corners of the earth. The Jesuits' international impact and openness to dialogue with non-European cultures generated controversy--and led to their suppression by Pope Clement XIV in 1773. Restored in 1814, the Jesuits grew rapidly and had particular influence on the formation of schools and universities, an influence that continues to this day. In our global era marked by deep religious and cultural pluralism, what can we learn from the historical and contemporary experience of the Society of Jesus? What do the Jesuits tell us about globalization, and what can globalization tells us about the Jesuits? This volume is divided into two parts, historical legacies and contemporary challenges, and brings together leading scholars such as comparative theologian Francis Clooney, SJ, historian John O'Malley, SJ, Brazilian theologian Maria Clara Bingemer, and ethicist David Hollenbach, SJ, to focus on three critical themes: mission and dialogue; education and the human person; and justice and the common good

Abstract: Protests of neoliberal globalization have proliferated in recent years, not least in response to the financial crisis, austerity and increasing inequality. But how do religious groups organize themselves in response to these issues? This book systematically studies the relationship of religious activism towards neoliberal globalization. It considers how religious organizations often play a central role in the resistance against global capitalism, endeavouring to offer alternatives and developments for reform. But it also examines the other side of the coin, showing how many religious groups help to diffuse neoliberal values, promote and reinforce practices of capitalism. Drawing on a unique set of case studies from around the world, the chapters examine a range of groups and their practices in order to provide a thorough examination of the relationship between religion and the global political economy. -- Provided by publisher

Abstract: "How is religion changing in the twenty-first century? In the global era, religion has leapt into the world stage, though in contradictory ways. Some religious activists are antagonistic and engage in protests, violent acts, and political challenges. Others are positive and help to shape an emerging transnational civil society. A new global religion may be in the making, providing a moral and spiritual basis for a worldwide community of concern about environmental issues, human rights, and international peace. Abstract: Foreword / by Robert Schreiter -- Introduction: Migration as a locus for theological reflection -- Migration and social justice. Living on the edge: migration, globalization, and the unskilled worker ; Old challenges, new contexts, and strategies: the experience of migrant women ; Citizen-disciples: an ethical roadmap for migration reform -- Migration and religious experience. Journeying (together) in faith: migration, religion, and mission ; Toward an intercultural church: migration and inculturation ; A pilgrim people: migration and spirituality -- Conclusion: One bread, one body, one people
Abstract: The often conflicting and tragic nature of contemporary global migration makes a compelling case for theological reflection. Cruz explores the problems and possibilities that the experience of migrants brings to Christian theology by reflecting on the religious dimension as well as the social justice implications of the migrant experience. More specifically, she reflects on the Christian vision of "one bread, one body, one people" in view of the gifts and challenges of contemporary global migration to Christian systematic theology, social ethics, spirituality, mission, ministry, and inculturation based on the experience of refugees, unauthorized poor migrants, migrant workers, and migrant women

Abstract: "This book presents a critical study of citizenship, state, and globalization in societies that have been historically influenced by Islamic traditions and institutions. Interrogating the work of contemporary theorists of Islamic modernity such as Mohammed Arkoun, Abdul an-Na'im, Fatima Mernissi, Talal Asad, Saba Mahmood, and Aziz Al-Azmeh, this book explores the debate on Islam, democracy, and modernity, contextualized within contemporary Muslim lifeworlds. These include contemporary Turkey (following the 9/11 attacks and the onset of war in Afghanistan), multicultural France (2009-10 French burqa debate), Egypt (the 2011 Tahrir Square mass mobilizations), and India. Ali Mirsepassi and Tadd Fernee; critique particular counterproductive ideological conceptualizations, voicing an emerging global ethic of reconciliation. Rejecting the polarized conceptual ideals of the universal or the authentic, the authors critically reassess notions of the secular, the cosmopolitan, and democracy. Raising questions that cut across the disciplines of history, anthropology, sociology, and law, this study articulates a democratic politics of everyday life in modern Islamic societies"--

Abstract: This book is a radical piece of counter-intuitive thinking on the clash of civilizations theory and global politics. The author argues that after 9/11 we have not seen a new phase in a long running confrontation between Islam and the West, but that such cataegories have collapsed. The West is no longer a unified actor and Islam is ideologically exhausted in its confontation with colonialism. Rather we are seeing the emergence of the US as a lone superpower, and a confrontation between a form of imperial globalized capital and a new Islamic theodicy.

Abstract: It's no secret that the center of Christianity has shifted from the West to the global South and East. While the truths of the Christian faith are universal, new contexts bring new questions, new understandings, and new expressions. What does this mean for theology? Is the Christian faith not only culturally translatable, but also theologically translatable? Timothy Tennent answers this question with a resounding yes. Theological reflection is alive and well in the majority world church, and these new perspectives need to be heard, considered, and brought into conversation with Western theologians. Global theology can make us aware of our own blind spots and biases. Because of its largely conservative stance, global theology has much to offer toward the revitalization of Western Christianity. Tennent examines traditional theological categories in conversation with theologians from across the globe, making this volume valuable for students, pastors, missionaries, and theologians alike.
Description / Table of Contents: The emergence of a global theological discourse -- Theology : is the father of Jesus the God of Muhammad? -- Bibliology : Hindu sacred texts in pre-Christian past -- Anthropology : human identity in shame-based cultures of the Far East -- Christology : Christ as healer and ancestor in Africa -- Soteriology : is "salvation by grace through faith" unique to Christianity? -- Pneumatology : the Holy Spirit in Latin American Pentecostalism -- Ecclesiology : followers of Jesus in Islamic mosques -- Eschatology : Jonathan Edwards and the Chinese back to Jerusalem movement -- The emerging contours of global theology.

Abstract: One of the most powerful forces in the twenty-first century is the increasing phenomenon of globalization. In nearly every realm of human activity, traditional boundaries are disappearing and people worldwide are more interconnected than ever. Christianity has also become more aware of global realities and the important role of the church in non-Western countries. Church leaders must grapple with the implications for theology and ministry in an ever-shrinking world.

Abstract: The volume collects articles that present the current state of the English-language discussion on religion and globalization, especially from sociological and anthroplogical perspectives. A first section consists of theoretical contri-butions which inform the interpretations of the predominantly empirical studies that make up the second section. Overall, the selections show how the develop-ment of global society has contributed greatly to religious transformation; and how in various ways religion has been a significant force in the historical emergence of global society itself. - Content: Introduction, Peter Beyer: English-Language Views of the Role of Religion in Globalization; Section I: Theoretical Statements: Roland Robertson: The Globalization Paradigm: Thinking Globally; John W.
