Abstract: "In Probing Arts and Emergent Forms of Life Michael M. J. Fischer calls for a new anthropology of the arts that attends to the materialities and technologies of the world as it exists today. Fischer examines the work of key Southeast and East Asian artists within the crucibles of unequal access, geopolitics, the reverberations of past traumas, and emergent new socialities. He outlines how artist-theorists including Entang Wiharso, Sally Smart, Charles Lim, Zai Kuning, and Kiran Kumar speculate on how the world is changing in ways that are attuned to cultivating, repairing, and rethinking the world in the Anthropocene. Their artistic vocabulary not only undoes Western art models and categories; it probes the unfolding future, addresses past trauma, and creates contested, vibrant, and flourishing spaces. Throughout Indonesia, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, and from Kumar's experimental dance to Kuning's rattan and beeswax ghost ships to Lim's videography of Singapore from the sea, Fischer argues that these artists' theoretical discourses should be privileged over those of the curators, historians, critics, and other gatekeepers who protect and claim art worlds for themselves"--

Abstract: "Wake Up, This Is Joburg is a collaboration between photographer Mark Lewis and writer Tanya Zack. Originally published from 2014-2019 as ten separate photobooks by Fourthwall Books in South Africa, the collection builds a portrait of Johannesburg through individual stories and accompanying photographs. Ranging from butchers removing meat from cow heads in a parking garage meat market to underground gold miners hauling rock by hand from abandoned shafts under the city, these stories contribute to ethnographic studies of the city by showing the lived experience of its residents. At its heart, this project investigates how people are improvising to repurpose land and buildings, especially in Johannesburg's inner city. It brings attention to a vast informal economy, as well as widespread reconstruction as crumbling buildings are occupied, burned, stripped of parts, and rebuilt to serve the needs of the residents."

Abstract: "Throughout his career, the internationally renowned Haitian anthropologist Michel-Rolph Trouillot unsettled key concepts in anthropology, history, postcolonial studies, Black studies, Caribbean studies, and beyond. From his early critique of the West to the ongoing challenges he leveled at disciplinary and intellectual boundaries and formations, Trouillot centered the Caribbean as a site both foundational to the development of Western thought and critical to its undoing. Trouillot Remixed offers a representative cross-section of his work that includes his most famous writings as well as lesser-known and harder to find pieces essential to his oeuvre. Encouraging readers to engage with Trouillot's scholarship in new ways, this collection demonstrates the breadth of his writing, his enduring influence on Caribbean studies, and his relevance to politically engaged scholarship more broadly

Abstract: "The dystopian transformation of contemporary societies that has expanded to various parts of the world and to diverse domains of human activities requires a rethinking of our conceptual repertoire rather than the reinvention of neologisms. The terms that we consider as belonging to a political lexicon need to be understood in relation to a constellation of concepts and a diversity of experiences across different societies in both comparative and relational terms. Chapters in Words and Worlds are organized around individual terms that form part of a political lexicon that many use to understand what is unfolding before their eyes. The juxtaposition of these different terms and the cross references that show unexpected connections across diverse domains of social life, whether concentrated in small spaces or dispersed across vastly distant ones, challenge the reader to see these dystopian developments through a different modality of reading and sensing. Words like knowledge, authority, democracy, corruption, inequality, and crisis have become part of our everyday vocabulary; yet, what animates these words, what give them life, what makes them dead, urges us to examine these common vocabularies from new and different angles rather than using them as crutches to avoid facing current disturbing realities"--

Abstract: In There's a Disco Ball Between Us, Jafari S. Allen offers a sweeping and lively ethnographic and intellectual history of what he calls "Black gay habits of mind." In conversational and lyrical language, Allen locates this sensibility as it emerged from radical Black lesbian activism and writing during the long 1980s. He traverses multiple temporalities and locations, drawing on research and fieldwork conducted across the globe, from Nairobi, London, and Paris to Toronto, Miami, and Trinidad and Tobago. In these locations and archives, Allen traces the genealogies of Black gay politics and cultures in the visual art, poetry, film, Black feminist theory, historiography, and activism of thinkers and artists such as Audre Lorde, Marsha P. Johnson, Essex Hemphill, Colin Robinson, Marlon Riggs, Pat Parker, and Joseph Beam. Throughout, Allen renarrates Black queer history while cultivating a Black gay method of thinking and writing. In so doing, he speaks to the urgent contemporary struggles for social justice while calling on Black studies to pursue scholarship, art, and policy derived from the lived experience and fantasies of Black people throughout the world.

Abstract: "In THEFT IS PROPERTY! Robert Nichols develops the concept of "recursive dispossession" to describe the critical bind that indigenous activists face when seeking justice for the appropriation of their land: they simultaneously claim that their land was stolen by Anglo settlers, but also that territoriality and property ownership are themselves settler concepts. Putting indigenous thought into conversation with Marxist theory, Nichols argues that property relations under settler colonialism are built upon a structural form of negation, wherein some groups must be alienated from the very property that is being created. Thus, theft precedes and generates property, rather than vice versa, and indigenous claims of retroactive "original ownership" are not contradictory or logically flawed, but rather, gesture back to this very dynamic. By looking at dispossession as a unique historical process in the context of colonialism, Nichols shows how contemporary indigenous struggles have always already produced their own mode of critique and articulation of radical politics"--...

Abstract: "JOURNEYS THROUGH THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE will contain about four hundred photographs, accompanied by historical contextualization. The project compares William Brumfield's photographs of churches and locations in Russia with the same structures and places photographed by Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky, an early-20th-century Russian inventor of a color photography process, as much as a century earlier. Through this comparison, Brumfield assesses the state of preservation of Russia's architectural heritage and examines the appeal and pitfalls of seeing Prokudin-Gorsky's striking images as a recovery of Russia's lost past. Brumfield examines fervent Russian engagement with the Prokudin-Gorsky collection, which was recently made broadly available through digitization. The author questions the nostalgic assumptions of many analysts, who see the images as a portrayal of an idyllic Russia intact before the Soviet era and neglect the imperial violence present before the revolution. Prokudin-Gorsky himself was idealistic about the imperial potential. He intended his new color photography to convey the cultural and ethnic diversity of the vast Russian Empire, using this medium to impart a visual message from the provinces to the urban centers about the richness of Russia's history, culture, and borderlands. He escaped Russia in 1918 with many of the heavy glass negatives he used, and the Library of Congress ultimately bought the collection. Because of his own field experience photographing Russian architectural monuments, Brumfield was approached to catalog, restore, and exhibit Prokudin-Gorsky's photographs. While working on the project, he realized how much the two photographer's journeys across Russia had, unintentionally, intersected. His own photographic project accelerated with the relaxation of travel restrictions within the Soviet Union during the late 1980s; he documents the remnants of Russia's architectural heritage, and its expression of history, art, and spiritual culture, that Prokudin-Gorsky recorded earlier. This project will be of particular interest to scholars and students of Russian history, art, and architecture, as well as general readers interested in photography and historic preservation"--

Abstract: Drawing on Indigenous peoples' struggles against settler colonialism, Theft Is Property! reconstructs the concept of dispossession as a means of explaining how shifting configurations of law, property, race, and rights have functioned as modes of governance, both historically and in the present. Through close analysis of arguments by Indigenous scholars and activists from the nineteenth century to the present, Robert Nichols argues that dispossession has come to name a unique recursive process whereby systematic theft is the mechanism by which property relations are generated. In so doing, Nichols also brings long-standing debates in anarchist, Black radical, feminist, Marxist, and postcolonial thought into direct conversation with the frequently overlooked intellectual contributions of Indigenous peoples.

Abstract: As modern European empires expanded, written language was critical to articulations of imperial authority and justifications of conquest. For imperial administrators and thinkers, the non-literacy of "native" societies demonstrated their primitiveness and inability to change. Yet as the contributors to Indigenous Textual Cultures make clear through cases from the Pacific Islands, Australasia, North America, and Africa, indigenous communities were highly adaptive and created novel, dynamic literary practices that preserved indigenous knowledge traditions. The contributors illustrate how modern literacy operated alongside orality rather than replacing it. Reconstructing multiple traditions of indigenous literacy and textual production, the contributors focus attention on the often hidden, forgotten, neglected, and marginalized cultural innovators who read, wrote, and used texts in endlessly creative ways. This volume demonstrates how the work of these innovators played pivotal roles in reimagining indigenous epistemologies, challenging colonial domination, and envisioning radical new futures.Contributors. Abstract: "The visceral logics of decolonization offers a question that shapes Khanna's primary decolonial intervention in this book: "What would it mean to undo the visceral lessons of colonialism in the habits of mind and emotive reflex of the postcolonial subject?" For Neetu Khanna the answers to this question are lodged within the artistic renderings of the Progressive Writer's Association, an anti-colonial, anti-orthodox Muslim writer's collective. Drawing on the work of Fanon, as well as queer and feminist theory, Khanna thinks through how affect circulates within anti-colonial struggle. Using the archives of Indian Marxist movements between the 1930s and the 1960s, Khanna theorizes the concept of "the visceral" as an embodied habit and feeling that emerges at the juncture of colonialism and nationalist movement. She argues that this affective corporeality shapes utopic visions of freedom for the gendered, colonial, Indian, citizen subject as they are imagined in the artistic experimentation of Indian progressive political movements. In chapter 1, Khanna begins describing the visceral inquiries of the book to explore the form and phenomenology of nationalist emotion as it emerges in Indian struggles for decolonization. Khanna locates the somatic unconscious in the tensed musculature of the politically agitated revolutionary subject and sets up this framework that is used throughout the rest of the book. Chapter 2 brings into focus the revolutionary promise of "the visceral" within the internationalist imaginary, which makes possible the transformation of feeling and consciousness. The female body comes into focus in chapter 3, highlighting how women's bodies become the focal objects of violent subjection by both colonial and anti-colonial nationalist regimes of discipline. Khanna discusses writer Ahmed Ali and The All-India Progressive Writers Association in chapter 4, and shows how visceral eruptions propel the engine of the national teleology of the progressive novel moving through mourning, grief, nostalgia, melancholy, and lamentation - necessary elements for revolutionary transformation. The book ends with a chapter about Fanon, returning to the anti-colonial theories of the most canonized figure in postcolonial studies and studies of decolonization through the alternative genealogy of the visceral opened up by the Progressive Writers movement. This book will be of interest to scholars in South Asian studies, post-colonial theory, and history"--

Abstract: The concept of relation holds a privileged place in how anthropologists think and write about the social and cultural lives they study. In Relations, eminent anthropologist Marilyn Strathern provides a critical account of this key concept and its usage and significance in the English-speaking world. Exploring relation's changing articulations and meanings over the past three centuries, Strathern shows how the historical idiosyncrasy of using an epistemological term for kinspersons ("relatives") was bound up with evolving ideas about knowledge-making and kin-making. She draws on philosophical debates about relation-such as Leibniz's reaction to Locke-and what became its definitive place in anthropological exposition, elucidating the underlying assumptions and conventions of its use. She also calls for scholars in anthropology and beyond to take up the limitations of Western relational thinking, especially against the background of present ecological crises and interest in multispecies relations. In weaving together analyses of kin-making and knowledge-making, Strathern opens up new ways of thinking about the contours of epistemic and relational possibilities while questioning the limits and potential of ethnographic methods

Abstract: "WRITING ANTHROPOLOGY gathers fifty three essays on writing from leading anthropologists on their approach to writing and its current practice in the field. In the past several decades, as anthropologists have grappled with questions of how to ethically portray their subjects, ethnographic writing styles have also changed from a detached, objective voice to one that is more humanistic and self-reflexive. To explore these changes in writing styles and approaches, Carole McGranahan curated a series for the blog Savage Minds: Notes and Queries in Anthropology on the craft of writing and anthropology. This anthology collects expanded versions of these essays, as well as new additions, and raises wide-ranging questions about what it means to write ethnographically. The book is divided into ten sections: Ruminations, Writing Ideas, Telling Stories, On Responsibility, The Urgency of Now, Writing With, Writing Against, Academic Authors, Ethnographic Genres, Becoming and Belonging, and Writing and Knowing. Essays include Ruth Behar on reading as a writer, Adia Benton on how the passage of time can create fuller ethnographic accounts, and Yarimar Bonilla on the temporality of reading and writing in the digital age. Other contributors include Press authors such as Anand Pandian, Lauren Berlant, Kathleen Stewart, Stuart McLean, and Kristen Ghodsee. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of anthropology and creative writing"--

Abstract: Approached as a wellspring of cultural authenticity and historical exceptionality, New Orleans appears in opposition to a nation perpetually driven by progress. 'Remaking New Orleans' shows how this narrative is rooted in a romantic cultural tradition, continuously repackaged through the twin engines of tourism and economic development, and supported by research that has isolated the city from comparison and left unquestioned its entrenched inequality. Working against this feedback loop, the contributors place New Orleans at the forefront of national patterns of urban planning, place-branding, structural inequality, and racialization. Nontraditional sites like professional wrestling matches, middle-class black suburbs, and Vietnamese gardens take precedence over cliched renderings of Creole cuisine, voodoo queens, and hot jazz. Covering the city's founding through its present and highlighting changing political and social formations, this volume remakes New Orleans as a rich site for understanding the quintessential concerns of American cities.

Abstract: How do we live in and with empire? The contributors to this book pursue this question by examining empire as an unequally shared present. Here empire stands as an entrenched, if often invisible, part of everyday life central to making and remaking a world in which it is too often presented as an aberration rather than as a structuring condition. This volume presents scholarship from across U.S. imperial formations: settler colonialism, overseas territories, communities impacted by U.S. military action of political intervention, Cold War alliances and fissures, and, most recently, new forms of U.S. empire after 9/11. From the Mohawk Nation, Korea, and the Philippines to Iraq and the hills of New Jersey, the contributors show how a methodological and theoretical commitment to ethnography sharpens all of our understandings of the novel and timeworn ways people live, thrive, and resist in the imperial present

Abstract: The Confucian doctrine of tianxia (all under heaven) outlines a unitary worldview that cherishes global justice and transcends social, geographic, and political divides. For contemporary scholars, it has held myriad meanings, from the articulation of a cultural imaginary and political strategy to a moralistic commitment and a cosmological vision. The contributors to Chinese Visions of World Order examine the evolution of tianxia's meaning and practice in the Han dynasty and its mutations in modern times. They attend to its varied interpretations, its relation to realpolitik, and its revival in twenty-first-century China. They also investigate tianxia's birth in antiquity and its role in empire building, invoke its cultural universalism as a new global imagination for the contemporary world, analyze its resonance and affinity with cosmopolitanism in East-West cultural relations, discover its persistence in China's socialist internationalism and third world agenda, and critique its deployment as an official state ideology. In so doing, they demonstrate how China draws on its past to further its own alternative vision of the current international system. -- Back cover

Abstract: This original, field-changing collection explores the plasticity and unfinishedness of human subjects and lifeworlds, advancing the conceptual terrain of an anthropology of becoming. People's becomings trouble and exceed ways of knowing and acting, producing new possibilities for research, methodology, and writing. The contributors creatively bridge ethnography and critical theory in a range of worlds on the edge, from war and its aftermath, economic transformation, racial inequality, and gun violence to religiosity, therapeutic markets, animal rights activism, and abrupt environmental change. Defying totalizing analytical schemes, these visionary essays articulate a human science of the uncertain and unknown and restore a sense of movement and possibility to ethics and political practice. Unfinished invites readers to consider the array of affects, ideas, forces, and objects that shape contemporary modes of existence and future horizons, opening new channels for critical thought and creative expression.Contributors. Lucas Bessire, João Biehl, Naisargi N. Dave, Elizabeth A. Davis, Michael M. J. Fischer, Angela Garcia, Peter Locke, Adriana Petryna, Bridget Purcell, Laurence Ralph, Lilia M. Schwarcz...

Abstract: In White Innocence Gloria Wekker explores a central paradox of Dutch culture: the passionate denial of racial discrimination and colonial violence coexisting alongside aggressive racism and xenophobia. Accessing a cultural archive built over 400 years of Dutch colonial rule, Wekker fundamentally challenges Dutch racial exceptionalism by undermining the dominant narrative of the Netherlands as a "gentle" and "ethical" nation. Wekker analyzes the Dutch media's portrayal of black women and men, the failure to grasp race in the Dutch academy, contemporary conservative politics (including gay politicians espousing anti-immigrant rhetoric), and the controversy surrounding the folkloric character Black Pete, showing how the denial of racism and the expression of innocence safeguards white privilege. Wekker uncovers the postcolonial legacy of race and its role in shaping the white Dutch self, presenting the contested, persistent legacy of racism in the country

Abstract: In The Color of Modernity, Barbara Weinstein focuses on race, gender, and regionalism in the formation of national identities in Brazil; this focus allows her to explore how uneven patterns of economic development are consolidated and understood. Abstract: Mohawk Interruptus is a bold challenge to dominant thinking in the fields of Native studies and anthropology. Combining political theory with ethnographic research among the Mohawks of Kahnawà:ke, a reserve community in what is now southwestern Quebec, Audra Simpson examines their struggles to articulate and maintain political sovereignty through centuries of settler colonialism. The Kahnawà:ke Mohawks are part of the Haudenosaunee or Iroquois Confederacy. Like many Iroquois peoples, they insist on the integrity of Haudenosaunee governance and refuse American or Canadian citizenship. Audra Simpson thinks through this politics of refusal, which stands in stark contrast to the politics of cultural recognition. Tracing the implications of refusal, Simpson argues that one sovereign political order can exist nested within a sovereign state, albeit with enormous tension around issues of jurisdiction and legitimacy. Finally, Simpson critiques anthropologists and political scientists, whom, she argues, have too readily accepted the assumption that the colonial project is complete. Belying that notion, Mohawk Interruptus calls for and demonstrates more robust and evenhanded forms of inquiry into indigenous politics in the teeth of settler governance.

Abstract: For twenty years, the renowned philosopher of science Sandra Harding has argued that science and technology studies, postcolonial studies, and feminist critique must inform one another. In The Postcolonial Science and Technology Studies Reader, Harding puts those fields in critical conversation, assembling the anthology that she has long wanted for classroom use. In classic and recent essays, international scholars from a range of disciplines think through a broad array of science and technology philosophies and practices. The contributors reevaluate conventional accounts of the West’s scientific and technological projects in the past and present, rethink the strengths and limitations of non-Western societies’ knowledge traditions, and assess the legacies of colonialism and imperialism. The collection concludes with forward-looking essays, which explore strategies for cultivating new visions of a multicultural, democratic world of sciences and for turning those visions into realities. Feminist science and technology concerns run throughout the reader and are the focus of several essays. Harding provides helpful background for each essay in her introductions to the reader’s four sections.

Abstract: The Internet allows ethnographers to deposit the textual materials on which they base their writing in virtual archives. Electronically archived fieldwork documents can be accessed at any time by the writer, his or her readers, and the people studied. Johannes Fabian, a leading theorist of anthropological practice, argues that virtual archives have the potential to shift the emphasis in ethnographic writing from the monograph to commentary. In this insightful study, he returns to the recording of a conversation he had with a ritual healer in the Congolese town of Lubumbashi more than three decades ago. Fabian's transcript and translation of the exchange have been deposited on a website (Language and Popular Culture in Africa), and in Ethnography as Commentary he provides a model of writing in the presence of a virtual archive

Abstract: The Will to Improve is a remarkable account of development in action. Focusing on attempts to improve landscapes and livelihoods in Indonesia, Tania Murray Li carefully exposes the practices that enable experts to diagnose problems and devise interventions, and the agency of people whose conduct is targeted for reform. Deftly integrating theory, ethnography, and history, she illuminates the work of colonial officials and missionaries; specialists in agriculture, hygiene, and credit; and political activists with their own schemes for guiding villagers toward better ways of life. She examines donor-funded initiatives that seek to integrate conservation with development through the participation of communities, and a one-billion-dollar program designed by the World Bank to optimize the social capital of villagers, inculcate new habits of competition and choice, and remake society from the bottom up. Demonstrating that the "will to improve" has a long and troubled history, Li identifies enduring continuities from the colonial period to the present. She explores the tools experts have used to set the conditions for reform - tools that combine the reshaping of desires with applications of force. Attending in detail to the highlands of Sulawesi, she shows how a series of interventions entangled with one another and tracks their results, ranging from wealth to famine, from compliance to political mobilization, and from new solidarities to oppositional identities and violent attack

Abstract: Under globalization, the project of area studies and its relationship to the fields of cultural, ethnic, and gender studies has grown more complex and more in need of the rigorous reexamination that this volume and its distinguished contributors undertake. In the aftermath of World War II, area studies were created in large part to supply information on potential enemies of the United States. The essays in Learning Places argue, however, that the post–Cold War era has seen these programs largely degenerate into little more than public relations firms for the areas they research.A tremendous amount of money flows—particularly within the sphere of East Asian studies, the contributors claim—from foreign agencies and governments to U.S. universities to underwrite courses on their histories and societies. In the process, this volume argues, such funds have gone beyond support to the wholesale subsidization of students in graduate programs, threatening the very integrity of research agendas. Native authority has been elevated to a position of primacy; Asian-born academics are presumed to be definitive commentators in Asian studies, for example. Area studies, the contributors believe, has outlived the original reason for its construction. The essays in this volume examine particular topics such as the development of cultural studies and hyphenated studies (such as African-American, Asian-American, Mexican-American) in the context of the failure of area studies, the corporatization of the contemporary university, the prehistory of postcolonial discourse, and the problematic impact of unformulated political goals on international activism.Learning Places points to the necessity, the difficulty, and the possibility in higher education of breaking free from an entrenched Cold War narrative and making the study of a specific area part of the agenda of education generally. The book will appeal to all whose research has a local component, as well as to those interested in the future course of higher education generally.Contributors. Paul A. Abstract: Until now, Andean peasants have primarily been thought of by scholars as isolated subsistence farmers, "resistant" to money and to different markets in the region. Ethnicity, Markets, and Migration in the Andes overturns this widely held assumption and puts in its place a new perspective as it explores the dynamic between Andean cultural, social, and economic practices and the market forces of a colonial and postcolonial mercantile economy.Bringing together the work of outstanding scholars in Andean history, anthropology, and ethnohistory, these pioneering essays show how, from the very earliest period of Spanish rule, Andean peasants and their rulers embraced the new economic opportunities and challenged or subverted the new structures introduced by the colonial administration. They also convincingly explain why in the twentieth century the mistaken idea developed that Andean peasants were conservative and unable to participate effectively in different markets, and reveal how closely ethnic inequalities were tied to evolving market relations. Inviting a critical reconsideration of ethnic, class, and gender issues in the context of rural Andean markets, this book will revise the prevailing view of Andean history and provide a more fully informed picture of the complex mercantile activities of Andean peasants
