Abstract: Introduction: The Pacific Islands Region and the United Nations -- Part One: Self-determination and the development of new nations -- Self-Determination -- National development planning, implementation, and assessment -- Regional Development and the UN -- UN Offices in the Pacific -- Governance and Pacific Islands Policy networks -- Part Two: Pacific Islands engagement in the UN -- Membership and Participation in the major organs -- Regional Peace and Security -- Part Three: Small Island Developing Countries, Regionalism, and Global Multilateralism -- Global Policy Networks & Global Summitry -- Global Development Plans -- The Emergence of SIDS Development Discourse -- Small States as Good States, Smart States, in the Global Era.
Abstract: This book critically examines the relationship between the United Nations Organization and the small states of the Pacific islands. It provides an in-depth coverage of the United Nations, coupled with how Pacific Small Island Developing States interact. It covers three themes, the first one being the position of the UN on the Pacific Islands, which examines the role of the many UN organs, agencies and programs in strengthening individual countries and the region as a whole. It examines the manner in which the UN’s activities have benefited Pacific nations, territories and peoples. The second theme deals with the Pacific states in the UN, and examines the participation of Pacific nations and territories in the UN’s various organs, agencies, and programmes. It analyses the contribution they have made to the effectiveness of the organization, as distinct from the benefits they have sought to gain from it. The third and last theme deals with small states in global public policy, taking a broader look at how small states are faring within the UN system in the age of global discourse on shared public goods/public policy concerns.

Abstract: “This welcomed and important book immensely enriches the literatures on peace studies, Global IR, and Latin American contributions to international society. It focuses upon seven Latin American Nobel Peace recipients ranging from Carlos Saavedra Lamas (1936) to Juan Manuel Santos (2016), and their impact on ideas and practices of peace in Latin America and beyond, including issue-areas such as mediation and diplomacy, human rights, nuclear disarmament, indigenous rights, peacekeeping, reconciliation, and ending civil wars.” — Prof. Arie M. Kacowicz, Chaim Weizmann Chair in International Relations, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel “From the social activism of Rigoberta Menchú to the global initiatives of UN Secretary-General Javier Pérez de Cuéllar, this book explores the connection between the power of ideas and the actions of peace leaders to build a better world. The authors’ analyses serve as a reminder to academics and diplomats of the importance of taking small and large steps to manage and transform conflict and create institutions with a human focus.” — Ambassador Claudia Fuentes Julio, Permanent Representative of Chile to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, Switzerland This book analyzes the contributions of seven Latin American peace actors to reconciliation and conflict resolution: Carlos Saavedra Lamas, Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, Alfonso García Robles, Óscar Arias Sánchez, Rigoberta Menchú Tum, Juan Manuel Santos, and Javier Pérez de Cuéllar. Working within an eclectic conceptual approach to systematize the difusion of their ideas, the chapters build upon three fundamentals of mainstream constructivism: a) change across time and space in each peace actor’s lifetime; b) socialization through changing norms, rules, and language; and c) processes of interaction in which they chose strategies and built networks. In their respective historical times, their views and ideas transcended the confines of Latin America to influence global political thought and produce change that favored peace. Roberto Domínguez is Professor of International Relations at Suffolk University, USA. Andrea Oelsner is Associate Professor and Director of the Political Science and IR Programs at the University of San Andrés, Argentina.

Abstract: This book addresses the breakdown of failed democratic systems in Latin America and the Caribbean. The scope of this investigation is a study of political systems of Venezuela, Colombia, and Nicaragua. The implications of the present research on democratic purgatory have real-world applications not only for the above countries but also for those political systems that are currently transitioning and/or consolidating their democracies as well. Christopher M. Brown is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Political Science and International Studies, Georgia Southern University, USA. His primary research agenda addresses normative issues of democratization and democracy theory. He is the author of Constructing International Studies and Introduction to International Studies.

Abstract: Shallow capital markets are a key bottleneck for private sector development in Latin America. Still, there is not a large literature on capital markets and corporate governance, or on the politics of regulatory reform and business associations, focused on this region. To help address this gap, this new book introduces private equity into the financial development debate through a Latin American lens. The author looks at the cases of Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, and Argentina. And proposes a shift in the financial development discussion from institutional explanations focused only on rules to an actor-based argument centered on the role of institutional investors, in particular pension funds . Ignacio Puente is a researcher working on the political economy of financial development and corporate governance reform in emerging economies. .

Abstract: This textbook offers an interpretive overview of the history of the Latin American region since the mid-eighteenth century. Its central focus is the struggle of ordinary folks to control their daily lives. It examines the social, economic, and political institutions Latin Americans built and rebuilt, such as families, governments (from village to national levels), churches, political parties, labor unions, schools, and armies, through the lives of the people forged them. It explores the texture of everyday life. Mark Wasserman taught Latin American History at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, USA, for forty years. He is the author of four books on Mexico and two bestselling textbooks on Latin American History. He has won several major fellowships and awards for his scholarship. Covering the sweep of Latin American history from the perspective of the everyday experiences of the people who made it, Modern Latin America, tells the story of the forces that shaped the region and how people from various walks of life negotiated the changing dynamics of race, class, gender, political conflict and power to create the societies of today. Integrating current scholarship, the book covers the major themes and events of Latin American history while breaking away from a dry history of states and institutions to provide a window on the dynamics of how people shaped, were impacted by, and lived their history. Paul Hart, Professor of History and Director of the Center for International Studies, Texas State University, USA Modern Latin America: Everyday Life and Politics 1800 to the Present is an engaging account that effectively weaves the economic, cultural, social, and political histories of the region. Wasserman has a keen eye, recognizing the challenges that Latin America’s diverse populations have confronted over the centuries. “Nature’s Way,” one of the special features in each chapter, is a welcome addition at a time when disease and climate change surround us. Sandra Mendiola García, Associate Professor of History, University of North Texas, USA.

Abstract: This book explores the potential for renewable energy development and the adoption of sustainable production processes in Latin America and the Caribbean. By examining the energy transition process, the impact of environmental degradation, and the relationship between renewable energy sources and economic growth, the effects of increased globalisation and liberalisation in this part of the world are analysed. Particular attention is given to renewable energy investment, the energy-economics growth nexus, the impact of trade openness, and the mitigation of carbon emissions. This book aims to highlight econometric techniques that can be used to tackle issues relating to globalisation, the energy transition, and environmental degradation. It will be relevant to researchers and policymakers interested in energy and environmental economics. Matheus Koengkan holds a PhD in economics from the University of Évora. He is an energy and environmental economics researcher at the Department of Economics, Management, Industrial Engineering and Tourism (DEGEIT), University of Aveiro, Aveiro, Portugal. José Alberto Fuinhas, PhD in economics, is a professor of monetary economics and intermediate econometrics at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal. In addition, he is a researcher of macroeconomics, energy economics, and environmental economics at the CeBER - Centre for Business and Economics Research.

Abstract: This book takes a comparative approach to economic history to offer ways to increase our understanding of the divergence between South America and Scandinavia. In particular, the book aims to deepen our understanding of why the two groups of countries have set out on radically different pathways with regard to industrialisation, long-term economic growth and income distribution. The book draws together the results of two separate projects focusing on this comparison. The first of these projects focuses on two of the so-called settler societies of South America, namely Uruguay and Argentina, sometimes called the Pampas region. Australia and New Zealand, two other settler societies, are also considered, adding a further contrasting effect. These settler societies are compared with Scandinavia, in its broad terms, including Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland. The second of these projects focuses on comparisons between Brazil and Sweden. Together, the two projects have engaged the minds of economic historians from Brazil, Uruguay and Sweden. This book will be of interest to researchers and students in economic history and economic development more broadly. Svante Prado is a researcher in economic history at the Department of Economy and Society at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. His research focuses on Swedish wages and labour markets in historical perspective and international comparisons of labour productivity. Jorge E. Álvarez Scanniello is Professor and Co-ordinator of the Economic and Social History Programme, Social Sciences Faculty, University of the Republic, Uruguay. He is also Researcher of the National Agency of Innovation and Research, Uruguay.

Abstract: The book uses an innovative prism of interorality that powerfully reevaluates Caribbean orality and innovatively casts light on its overlooked and fundamental epistemological contribution into the formation of Caribbean philosophy. It defines the innovative prism of interorality as the systematic transposition of previously composed storytales into new and distinct tales. The book offers a powerful consideration of the interconnections between Caribbean orality and Caribbean philosophy, especially as this pertains to aesthetics and ethics. This is a new area of thought, a new methodological approach and a new conceptual paradigm and proposition to scholars, students, writers, artists and intellectuals who conceive and examine intellectual and cultural productaions in the Black Atlantic world and beyond

Abstract: This book examines how Coleridge staged his private woes in the public space of the newspaper by looking at his publications in the Morning Post, which first published one of his most famous poems, Dejection. An Ode. It reveals how he found a socially sanctioned public outlet for poetic disappointments and personal frustrations which he could not possibly articulate in any other way. Featuring fresh, contextual readings of established major poems; original readings of epigrams, sentimental ballads, and translations; analyses of political and human-interest stories, this book reveals the remarkable extent to which Coleridge used the public medium of the newspaper to divulge his complex and ambivalent private emotions about his marriage, his relationship with the Wordsworths and the Hutchinsons, and the effect of these dynamics on his own poetry and poetics.

Abstract: This book is a collection of studies of drug policies in several Latin American countries. The chapters analyze the specific histories of drug policies in each country, as well as related phenomena and case studies throughout the region. It presents conceptual reflections on the origins of prohibition and the “War on Drugs,” including the topic of human rights and cognitive freedom. Further, the collection reflects on the pioneering role of some Latin American countries in changing paradigms of international drug policy. Each case study provides an analysis of where each state is now in terms of policy reform within the context of its history and current socio-political circumstances. Concurrently, local movements, initiatives, and backlash against the reformist debate within the hemisphere are examined. The recent changes regarding the regulation of marijuana in the United States and their possible impact on Latin America are also addressed. This work is an important, up-to-date and well-researched reference for all who are interested in drug policy from a Latin American perspective.

Abstract: This book examines the use of image and text juxtapositions in conceptual art as a strategy for challenging several ideological and institutional demands placed on art. While conceptual art is generally identified by its use of language, this book makes clear exactly how language was used. In particular, it asks: How has the presence of language in a visual art context changed the ways art is talked about, theorised and produced? Image and Text in Conceptual Art demonstrates how artworks communicate in context and evaluates their critical potential. It discusses international case studies and draws resources from art history and theory, philosophy, discourse analysis, literary criticism and social semiotics. Engaging the critical and social dimensions of art, it proposes three methods of analysis that consider the work's performative gesture, its logico-semantic relations and the rhetorical operations in the discursive creation of meaning. This book offers a comprehensive method of analysis that can be applied beyond conceptual art.
