    Abstract: This book describes in an easily accessible way how artificial intelligence (AI) will help us to overcome the ongoing rise in complexity and thus shape our lives and work in a not-too-distant future. AI has proven to be the latest tool for resolving issues created by the most recent surge in complexity, and the corollary is: those who delay or ignore AI, will be overwhelmed by complexity. The book starts with a broad description of the coevolution of technology and society that irreversibly leads to the sharp increase in complexity of our socioeconomic environment. The second chapter then covers concepts and principles of the new science of complexity which helps us to understand issues caused by socioeconomic complexity and provides methods for resolving them. Subsequently, a beginner's guide to artificial intelligence helps readers to glance at fundamentals of this powerful technology capable of resolving issues created by socioeconomic complexity. The danger of allowing intelligent digital systems to make high-risk decisions as well as the consequences of possible misuse of AI for fraud and fake are also discussed. The following chapter explores the concepts of natural and digital ecosystems. Digital transformation of rigidly structured corporations and administrations into adaptive and evolving organisations are illustrated by a number of case studies. Next, the current hectic transition of industrial to digital society is described, its origins identified and outcomes predicted, highlighting issues created by the increase in complexity and showing how to resolve them using thinking tools such as a complexity mindset and digital tools such as artificial intelligence. Eventually, the last two chapters outline the author's vision of the future digital economy and digital society. This book is accessible to everyone who is curious to glimpse into the future, no previous special knowledge of digital technology is required. Especially decision makers in politics, business, administration, banking, policy making, education, healthcare and defence, and their advisors will benefit from the book, as it will help them to contribute to the creation of the brave new digital world. It may also support investors to recognise which elements of digital technology will play the most important role in the near future

    Abstract: This book provides the first comprehensive introduction to the newly-emerging science of mobile phone behavior. It presents the unexpected complexity of human mobile phone behavior through four basic aspects of mobile phone usage (users, technologies, activities, and effects), and then explores four major domains of such behavior (medicine, business, education, and everyday life). Chapters open with thoughts on mobile phone usage and behavior from interviews with cell phone users, then present a series of scientific studies, synthesized knowledge, and real-life cases, concluding with complex but highly readable analyses of each aspect of mobile phone behavior. Readers should achieve two intellectual goals: gaining a usable knowledge of the complexity of mobile phone behaviour, and developing the skills to analyze the complexity of mobile phone usage - and further technological behaviors

    Abstract: This book aims to deconstruct ethnography to alert systems designers, and other stakeholders, to the issues presented by new approaches that move beyond the studies of ‘work’ and ‘work practice’ within the social sciences (in particular anthropology and sociology). The theoretical and methodological apparatus of the social sciences distort the social and cultural world as lived in and understood by ordinary members, whose common-sense understandings shape the actual milieu into which systems are placed and used.  In Deconstructing Ethnography the authors show how ‘new’ calls are returning systems design to ‘old’ and problematic ways of understanding the social. They argue that systems design can be appropriately grounded in the social through the ordinary methods that members use to order their actions and interactions.  This work is written for post-graduate students and researchers alike, as well as design practitioners who have an interest in bringing the social to bear on design in a systematic rather than a piecemeal way. This is not a ‘how to’ book, but instead elaborates the foundations upon which the social can be systematically built into the design of ubiquitous and interactive systems

    Abstract: By using various data inputs, ubiquitous computing systems detect their current usage context, automatically adapt their services to the user’s situational needs and interact with other services or resources in their environment on an ad-hoc basis. Designing such self-adaptive, context-aware knowledge processing systems is, in itself, a formidable challenge. This book presents core findings from the VENUS project at the Interdisciplinary Research Center for Information System Design (ITeG) at Kassel University, where researchers from different fields, such as computer science, information systems, human-computer interaction and law, together seek to find general principles and guidelines for the design of socially aware ubiquitous computing systems. To this end, system usability, user trust in the technology and adherence to privacy laws and regulations were treated as particularly important criteria in the context of socio-technical system design. During the project, a comprehensive blueprint for systematic, interdisciplinary software development was developed, covering the particular functional and non-functional design aspects of ubiquitous computing at the interface between technology and human beings. The organization of the book reflects the structure of the VENUS work program. After an introductory part I, part II provides the groundwork for VENUS by presenting foundational results from all four disciplines involved. Subsequently, part III focuses on methodological research funneling the development activities into a common framework. Part IV then covers the design of the demonstrators that were built in order to develop and evaluate the VENUS method. Finally, part V is dedicated to the evaluation phase to assess the user acceptance of the new approach and applications. The presented findings are especially important for researchers in computer science, information systems, and human-computer interaction, but also for everyone working on the acceptance of new technologies in society in general

    Abstract: Becoming a mother changes lives in many ways and this original and accessible 2005 book explores how women try to make sense of, and narrate their experiences of first-time motherhood in the Western world. Tina Miller pays close attention to women's own accounts, over time, of their experiences of transition to motherhood and shows how myths of motherhood continue because women do not feel able to voice their early (often difficult) experiences of mothering. The authors also show how video-based field studies of work and interaction can inform the design, development and deployment of new technology, in this valuable new resource for academics, researchers and practitioners
