    Abstract: "A spectacular thirty-meter high viaduct spans the Ouseburn river as it makes its way through Newcastle-upon-Tyne, in the northeast corner of England. Modern, bright-yellow and black tram cars ply the viaduct, bringing passengers from working-class Byker to more affluent South Gosforth station in a journey that takes roughly ten minutes. But while the Byker viaduct allows riders to traverse the physical chasm carved out by the Ouseburn with ease, the social differences that separate residents of Byker from their better-off neighbors are much harder to bridge. Twice as many children in Byker (two in five) live in poverty as in Gosforth. And while a fifty-five-year-old man from Gosforth can expect to live another seventeen years in good health, the average fifty-five-year-old in Byker has only another nine years of healthy life expectancy ahead of him (Bambra 2016, 92)"--

    Abstract: Economic arguments favoring increased immigration restrictions suggest that immigrants undermine the culture, institutions, and productivity of destination countries. But is this actually true? Nowrasteh and Powell systematically analyze cross-country evidence of potential negative effects caused by immigration relating to economic freedom, corruption, culture, and terrorism. They analyze case studies of mass immigration to the United States, Israel, and Jordan. Their evidence does not support the idea that immigration destroys the institutions responsible for prosperity in the modern world. This nonideological volume makes a qualified case for free immigration and the accompanying prosperity.

    Abstract: American political observers express increasing concern about affective polarization, i.e., partisans' resentment toward political opponents. We advance debates about America's partisan divisions by comparing affective polarization in the US over the past 25 years with affective polarization in 19 other western publics. We conclude that American affective polarization is not extreme in comparative perspective, although Americans' dislike of partisan opponents has increased more rapidly since the mid-1990s than in most other Western publics. We then show that affective polarization is more intense when unemployment and inequality are high; when political elites clash over cultural issues such as immigration and national identity; and in countries with majoritarian electoral institutions. Our findings situate American partisan resentment and hostility in comparative perspective, and illuminate correlates of affective polarization that are difficult to detect when examining the American case in isolation

    Abstract: From the French Revolution onwards, constituent power has been a key concept for thinking about the principle of popular power, and how it should be realised through the state and its institutions. Tracing the history of constituent power across five key moments - the French Revolution, nineteenth-century French politics, the Weimar Republic, post-WWII constitutionalism, and political philosophy in the 1960s - Lucia Rubinelli reconstructs and examines the history of the principle. She argues that, at any given time, constituent power offered an alternative understanding of the power of the people to those offered by ideas of sovereignty. Constituent Power: A History also examines how, in turn, these competing understandings of popular power resulted in different institutional structures and reflects on why contemporary political thought is so prone to conflating constituent power with sovereignty.

    Abstract: Calls for justice and reconciliation in response to political catastrophes are widespread in contemporary world politics. What implications do these normative strivings have in relation to colonial injustice? Examining cases of colonial war, genocide, forced sexual labor, forcible incorporation, and dispossession, Lu demonstrates that international practices of justice and reconciliation have historically suffered from, and continue to reflect, colonial, statist and other structural biases. The continued reproduction of structural injustice and alienation in modern domestic, international and transnational orders generates contemporary duties of redress. How should we think about the responsibility of contemporary agents to address colonial structural injustices and what implications follow for the transformation of international and transnational orders? Redressing the structural injustices implicated in or produced by colonial politics requires strategies of decolonization, decentering, and disalienation that go beyond interactional practices of justice and reconciliation, beyond victims and perpetrators, and beyond a statist world order.

    Abstract: The regulation of civil society provides the framework under which those organisations can most effectively provide services in education, health, social services, housing, development aid and so on.     Abstract: Following the ICC intervention in 2005, northern Uganda has been at the heart of international justice debates. The emergent controversy, however, missed crucial aspects of Acholi realities: that the primary moral imperative in the wake of wrongdoing was not punishment but, instead, the restoration of social harmony. Drawing upon abundant fieldwork and in-depth interviews with almost 200 women, Holly Porter examines issues surrounding wrongdoing and justice, and sexual violence and rape, among the Acholi people in northern Uganda. This intricate exploration offers evidence of a more complicated and nuanced explanation of rape and its aftermath, suggesting a re-imagining of the meanings of post-atrocity justice, whilst acknowledging the role of sex, power and politics in all sexual experiences between coercion and consent.     Abstract: Emotions underpin how political communities are formed and function. Nowhere is this more pronounced than in times of trauma. The emotions associated with suffering caused by war, terrorism, natural disasters, famine and poverty can play a pivotal role in shaping communities and orientating their politics. This book investigates how 'affective communities' emerge after trauma. Drawing on several case studies and an unusually broad set of interdisciplinary sources, it examines the role played by representations, from media images to historical narratives and political speeches. Representations of traumatic events are crucial because they generate socially embedded emotional meanings which, in turn, enable direct victims and distant witnesses to share the injury, as well as the associated loss, in a manner that affirms a particular notion of collective identity. Conceptually, the contributors develop and apply a new index and typology of politicisation. Focusing on six European countries (Austria, France, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK) from the 1970s to the current euro crisis, the book examines conflicts over Europe in election campaigns, street protests, and public debates on every major step in the integration process. Da auch nach dem "Ende" der kriegerischen Auseinandersetzungen keinesfalls von Frieden gesprochen werden kann, sind in dieser Situation ebenfalls Modelle für ein Zusammenleben unterschiedlicher Gruppen erforderlich. Das vorliegende Buch analysiert in der Praxis erprobte Ansätze zu einer erfolgversprechenden Konfliktregulierung: etwa Vorkehrungen zum Minderheitenschutz, bilaterale Abkommen, Konkordanzmodelle und territoriale Lösungen. Durch den Vergleich gelungener und gescheiterter Versuche - von Südtirol bis Katalonien, von Nordirland bis Kosovo - werden Bedingungen für eine erfolgreiche Konfliktlösung genannt.

    Abstract: This book responds to the often loud debates about the place of Muslims in Western Europe by proposing an analysis based in institutions, including schools, courts, hospitals, the military, electoral politics, the labor market, and civic education courses. The contributors consider the way people draw on practical schemas regarding others in their midst who are often categorized as Muslims. Chapters based on fieldwork and policy analysis across several countries examine how people interact in their everyday work lives, where they construct moral boundaries, and how they formulate policies concerning tolerable diversity, immigration, discrimination, and political representation. Rather than assuming that each country has its own national ideology that explains such interactions, contributors trace diverse pathways along which institutions complicate or disrupt allegedly consistent national ideologies. These studies shed light on how Muslims encounter particular faces and facets of the state as they go about their lives, seeking help and legitimacy as new citizens of a fast-changing Europe.

    Abstract: Although migration and integration have become important concepts today as a result of globalization, migration movements, integration, and multiculturalism have always been part of the history of Europe. Few people realize how many ethnic groups participated in migration within Europe or into Europe and this ignorance has grave consequences for the social and political status of immigrants. Newly available to an English-speaking audience, this encyclopaedia presents a systematic overview of the existing scholarship regarding migration within and into Europe. The first section contains survey studies of the various regions and countries in Europe covering the last centuries.     Abstract: Why are hopes fading for a single European identity? Economic integration has advanced faster and further than predicted, yet the European sense of 'who we are' is fragmenting. Exploiting decades of permissive consensus, Europe's elites designed and completed the single market, the euro, the Schengen passport-free zone, and, most recently, crafted an extraordinarily successful policy of enlargement. At the same time, these attempts to de-politicize politics, to create Europe by stealth, have produced a political backlash. This ambitious survey of identity in Europe captures the experiences of the winners and losers, optimists and pessimists, movers and stayers in a Europe where spatial and cultural borders are becoming ever more permeable.     Abstract: This book tells the dramatic story of the economic, social, political, and cultural transformation of Europe during the transition from the Cold War to the European Union. Ivan Berend charts, in particular, the overwhelming impact of the collapse of communism on every aspect of European life. Europe became safer and more united, and Central and Eastern Europe started on the difficult road to economic modernization. However, the western half of Europe also changed. European integration gained momentum. The single market and the common currency were introduced, and the Union enlarged from nine to twenty-seven countries. This period also saw a revolution in information and communication technology, the increasing impact of globalization and the radical restructuring of the political system. The book explores the impact of all of these changes as well as the new challenges posed by the economic crisis of 2008–9 and asks which way now for Europe?

Aber um dies Veränderung zu ermöglichen, sollte man vielleicht erst einmal versuchen, den Begriff "Gesellschaft" zu verändern. Heute läßt sich ein immer größeres Auseinanderklaffen der Praxis der Soziologie, der Theorie der Politik und des Glaubens an die Idee der Gesellschaft beobachten. Um einen Ausweg aus dieser Krise zu finden, sollte, so die provokative These dieses Buchs, diese Spannung bis zum äußersten ausgereizt werden.Bruno Latour, der die etablierten Grenzen zwischenWissenschaft, Kultur, Technik und Natur eingerissen hat, schlägt vor, zwei unterschiedliche Konzepte von Gesellschaft zu unterscheiden. Der einen Auffassung zufolge ist "Gesellschaft" eine unveränderliche abstrakte Entität, die ihren Schatten auf andere Bereiche wirft: auf die Wirtschaft, das Recht, die Wissenschaft etc. Nach der anderen hingegen ist "Gesellschaft" notwendig instabil: eine Verbindung überraschender Akteure, die die einlullende Gewißheit, einer gemeinsamen Welt anzugehören, in Frage stellen. Die Analyse dieser unerwarteten Verknüpfungen höchst unterschiedlicher Bereiche, wie etwa zwischen Viren, Wissenschaftlern, Leidenschaften, Naturkatastrophen oder Erfindungen, ist nach Bruno Latour Aufgabe der Soziologie.

    Abstract: The management of and communication about risks has become a major question of public policy and intellectual debate in the modern world. The social amplification of risk framework describes how both social and individual factors act to amplify or dampen perceptions of risk and through this create secondary effects such as stigmatisation of technologies, economic losses or regulatory impacts. This volume, edited by three of the world's leading analysts of risk and its communication, brings together contributions from a group of international experts working in the field of risk perception and risk communication. Key conceptual issues are discussed as well as a range of recent case studies (spanning BSE and food safety, AIDS/HIV, nuclear power, child protection, Y2K, electromagnetic fields, and waste incineration) that take forward the state-of-the-art in risk amplification theory.     Abstract: This 2001 book is an attempt by a social scientist to explain the predicament of Gypsies (or Roma), Eastern Europe's largest ethnic minority, and their relationship to the region's states and societies. Barany examines the Gypsies' socioeconomic and political marginality and policies toward them through seven centuries and in seven East European states. He illuminates the reasons why the Roma have consistently occupied the bottom of social, economic, and political hierarchies regardless of historical period or geographic location. Barany argues that the current nostalgia of many Gypsies for the socialist period is easy to understand, given the disastrous effect of the post-communist socioeconomic transformation on the Roma's conditions over the last decade. He explains the impact of Gypsy political mobilization, and the activities of international organizations and NGOs, on government policies. This pioneering multidisciplinary work will engage political scientists, sociologists and historians, as well as students of ethnic and racial studies

    Abstract: Die Darstellung von Politik in den Medien ist mit zum entscheidenden Faktor für die erfolgreiche Vermittlung von Inhalten und Personen geworden. Der Politikdozent (Uni Wuppertal) verfolgt in seinem Essay die Arbeitshypothese, dass die Mediatisierung der Gesellschaft nicht nur zur Übernahme von Inszenierungsszenarien in der Politik geführt habe. Auch die Darstellung von Politik in den Medien selbst sei in hohem Maße inszeniert. Das gelte selbstredend für fiktionale Formate wie Fernsehserien (Soaps) und Spielfilme, aber auch zunehmend für den Informationsbereich (Nachrichten, Fernsehmagazine, Talkshows). Der Autor sieht die Entwicklung zum Infotainment zwar durchaus kritisch ("Unterhaltungsöffentlichkeit ist keine Aufklärungsöffentlichkeit"), dennoch sei der Einfluss der Politikmacher auf die Medien nicht total und berge Emanzipationspotenziale. Zudem drohe das fiktionale "Feel Good" der Politik jederzeit von ökonomischen und gesellschaftlichen Realitäten eingeholt zu werden. Eine ähnlich differenzierte Darstellung lieferte z.B.     Abstract: Im Umgang mit Religion(en) befindet sich ein liberales Staatswesen wie das deutsche in einem Dilemma: Die Trennung von Staat und Kirche und die Religionsfreiheit verpflichten den Staat zur Neutralität gegenüber den Konfessionen; in der Praxis wird jedoch das christliche Weltbild administrativ und symbolisch privilegiert. Dies begünstigt die Radikalisierung religiöser Gruppierungen. Wir benötigen, so Rolf Schieder, also ein zivilreligiöses Gesamtkonzept, das der gar nicht zu vermeidenden Verquickung von Politik und Religion Rechnung trägt. Der Autor plädiert daher nicht für Säkularisierung, sondern für Modernisierung von Religion. Wie diese aussehen könnte, zeigt er an verschiedenen religionspolitischen Problemfeldern, die in den letzten Jahren in Deutschland zutage getreten sind.     Abstract: This 2001 book charts the evolution of clientelist practices in several western European countries. Through the historical and comparative analysis of countries as diverse as Sweden and Greece, England and Spain, France and Italy, Iceland and the Netherlands, the authors study both the 'supply-side' - the institutional context in which party leaders devise and implement their political strategies - and the 'demand-side' - the degree of 'empowerment' of civil society - of clientelism. This approach contends that clientelism is a particular mix of particularism and universalism, in which interests are aggregated at the level of the individual and his family 'particularism', but in which all interests can potentially find expression and accommodation 'universalism'. In contrast, 'consociationalism' and 'corporatism' are systems of interest representation in which interests are aggregated at the level of 'social pillar' or the functional association 'universalism', but in which not all interests can find representation and accommodation 'particularism'

    Abstract: Feminist analysis shows that the prevailing concepts of citizenship often assume a male citizen. How, then, does this affect the agency and participation of women in modern democracies? This insightful book, first published in 2000, presents a systematic comparison of the links between women's social rights and democratic citizenship in three different citizenship models: republican citizenship in France, liberal citizenship in Britain, and social citizenship in Denmark. Birte Siim argues that France still suffers from the contradictions of pro-natalist policy, and that Britain is only just starting to re-conceptualise the male-breadwinner model that is still a dominant feature. In her examination of the dual-breadwinner model in Denmark, Siim presents research about Scandinavian social policy and makes an important and timely contribution to debates in political sociology, social policy and gender studies
