    Abstract: Centering Pakistan in a story of transnational Islam stretching from South Asia to the Middle East, Simon Wolfgang Fuchs offers the first in-depth ethnographic history of the intellectual production of Shi'is and their religious competitors in this 'Land of the Pure.' The notion of Pakistan as the pinnacle of modern global Muslim aspiration forms a crucial component of this story. It has empowered Shi'is, who form about twenty percent of the country's population, to advance alternative conceptions of their religious hierarchy while claiming the support of towering grand ayatollahs in Iran and Iraq. Fuchs shows how popular Pakistani preachers and scholars have boldly tapped into the esoteric potential of Shi'ism, occupying a creative and at times disruptive role as brokers, translators, and self-confident pioneers of contemporary Islamic thought.

    Abstract: This study is about a popular manifestation of Islamic devotion that embraces a pluralist setting, keeping itself in a dynamic dialogue with non-Muslim practices. With evidence from various public devotional narratives and ritual practices, the author argues that even universal understanding of living Islam remains incomplete if we do not consider this locally produced pluralised devotional setting that surrounds it. He seeks to address various aspects of local and localised Islam through an examination of Gugudu's local and popular transformation of normative Islam, giving particular focus to the various devotional rituals that blend Muslim and Hindu practices in the public event of Muharram.

    Abstract: Kemal Ataturk's Republic of Turkey was set up in 1923 as a secular state, sweeping political, social, cultural and religious reforms followed. Islam was no longer the official religion of the state, the Sultanate was abolished and all Turkish citizens were declared equal without reference to religion. But though, in Azak's phrase, 'secularism was the central tenet of Kemalism', fear of a resurgent, even fanatical, Islam, continued to haunt the state. Azak's revisionist and original study sets out the struggle between religion and secularism but shows how Ataturk laboured for an idealised 'Turk.

    Abstract: Based on archival and primary sources in various languages, this book examines the Jews' religious, social, and political status in 19th century Iran. Focussing on Nasir al-Din Shah's reign (1848-1896), it is a comprehensive scholarly attempt to weave all these threads into a single tapestry. This case study of the Jewish minority illuminates broader processes pertaining to other religious minorities and Iranian society in general, and the interaction among intervening foreigners, the Shi'i majority, and local Jews helps us understand Iranian dilemmas that have persisted well beyond the second half of the nineteenth century.

    Abstract: Seit zwanzig Jahren boomen weltweit religiöse Gemeinschaften. Wenig spricht noch für die These, Religionen würden in den Bereich des Privaten abgedrängt. Es ist umgekehrt: im Namen von Religionen werden öffentlich Ansprüche gestellt. Dies geschieht nicht mehr (nur) durch die offiziellen Repräsentanten. Der Platz von Religionen in der Öffentlichkeit säkularer Staaten ist rechtlich definiert und erlaubt es auf vielfältige Weise, religiöse Erfahrungen und Bewertungen in die Zivilgesellschaft zu transportieren. In diesem Band, der aus einer Tagung am Max-Weber-Kolleg hervorgegangen ist, klären Juristen, Soziologen und Religionswissenschaftler gemeinsam die Wechselwirkungen zwischen Verfassungsrechten und Religionen. Anhand der Situation in Deutschland, von Rückblicken auf das Römische Recht und Vergleichen mit den USA weisen sie nach, daß die Rechtskonzeptionen von Religionen eine lange Geschichte haben, sich signifikant von einander unterscheiden und das Öffentlichwerden von Religionen einschließlich des Islam mit bestimmen.
