Abstract: "This handbook intends to offer a comprehensive and authoritative overview of the human rights implications of emerging technologies in the fields of life sciences and information and communication technologies (ICT). To this end, the volume brings together leading experts whose expertise encompasses several disciplinary domains (law, ethics, technology, basic science, medicine, business, etc.) with purposes of gathering extensive multidisciplinary knowledge about the evolutive transformation of the human rights framework in response to technological innovation. In particular, the aim of this volume is threefold. First, it aims to provide a comprehensive state-of-the-art report on emerging technologies that are likely to transform the human rights framework in the upcoming decades. Second, this collection of essays aims to raise awareness of the ethically and legally appropriate implementation of these technologies and to identify possible critical issues that arise or might arise in the context of their application. Third, and ultimately, the volume intends to contribute to the development of a robust, inclusive, and anticipatory human rights framework that can guide global societies across the ongoing digital transformation. In doing so, special attention is devoted to promoting policies and regulatory frameworks that foster the inalienable rights of individuals and the prevention of potential inappropriate uses or abuses of emerging technologies"--

Abstract: There is widespread concern that the growth of the Internet is exacerbating inequalities between the information rich and poor. Digital Divide examines access and use of the Internet in 179 nations world-wide. A global divide is evident between industrialized and developing societies. A social divide is apparent between rich and poor within each nation. Within the online community, evidence for a democratic divide is emerging between those who do and do not use Internet resources to engage and participate in public life. Part I outlines the theoretical debate between cyber-optimists who see the Internet as the great leveler. Part II examines the virtual political system and the way that representative institutions have responded to new opportunities on the Internet. Part III analyzes how the public has responded to these opportunities in Europe and the United States and develops the civic engagement model to explain patterns of participation via the Internet.

Abstract: Despite the extraordinary advances in digital and communication technology over recent years, we know very little about the way these complex systems affect everyday work and interaction. This book seeks to explore these issues through a series of video-based field studies. It begins by discussing the introduction of basic information systems in general medical practice and ends with an exploration of interpersonal communication in advanced media spaces; in the process also looking at news production, the control room of London Underground and computer aided design in architectural practice. Social interaction forms a particular focus of these studies as they explore the way individuals use various tools and technologies and coordinate their actions and activities with each other. The authors also show how video-based field studies of work and interaction can inform the design, development and deployment of new technology, in this valuable new resource for academics, researchers and practitioners.
