Dieses Buch erklärt den Aufstieg und die Erfolge autoritär-rechter Parteien und Bewegungen in Deutschland und Österreich vor dem Hintergrund sich verändernder Geschlechter- und Sexualitätsverhältnisse – im Kontext neoliberaler Transformationen und großer Krisen der letzten 20 Jahre. Deutlich wird, dass die Rechte eine neue Konjunktur der Männlichkeit bzw. ein antidemokratisches Gesellschaftsmodell der Ungleichheit und Ausschließung anstrebt. Zu diesem Zweck wird gegen die politische Elite, den Qualitätsjournalismus, Migrant:innen, Muslim:innen, LGBTIQ-Personen und Feminist:innen polemisiert.

    Abstract: Klappentext: Barry Buzan proposes a new approach to making International Relations a truly global discipline that transcends both Eurocentrism and comparative civilisations. He narrates the story of humankind as a whole across three eras, using its material conditions and social structures to show how global society has evolved. Deploying the English School's idea ofprimary institutions and setting their story across three domains - interpolity, transnational and interhuman - this book conveys a living historical sense of the human story whilst avoiding the overabstraction of many social science grand theories. Buzan sharpens the familiar story of three main eras in human history with the novel idea that these eras are separated by turbulent periods of transition. This device enables a radical retelling of how modernity emerged from the late 18thcentury. He shows how the concept of 'global society' can build bridges connecting International Relations, Global Historical Sociology and Global/World History

    Abstract: Städtische Proteste haben Hochkonjunktur. Mieter_innen, Kunst- und Kulturschaffende, Studierende, Wohnungslose und Geflüchtete melden sich zu Wort und fordern jenseits ihrer partikularen Bedürfnisse direkte Teilhabe an politischen Entscheidungen ein. Am Beispiel der Metropolen Berlin und New York zeigt David Scheller, wie sich städtische soziale Bewegungen zwischen 2011 und 2015 konstituieren und damit dringliche Themenfelder politisieren und verbinden. Ausgehend von einer hegemonietheoretischen Diskursanalyse der vielstimmigen Protestartikulationen schlägt er eine Interpretation von Möglichkeitsräumen zur Demokratisierung in der Postdemokratie vor, die für diese neue Phase städtischen Protests ausschlaggebend sind

    Abstract: Zivilgesellschaft ist ein viel benutztes Schlagwort, sowohl in Medien und Politik als auch in den Sozialwissenschaften. Der Begriff bezeichnet nichtstaatliche Organisationen wie Verbände, Vereine, soziale Bewegungen, Stiftungen, Initiativen - kurz, alle Aktivitäten von Bürgerinnen und Bürgern, die unsere heutigen Demokratien mitgestalten. Auf der normativen Ebene zählen das öffentliche Gespräch und Werte wie Toleranz und Gewaltfreiheit zur Zivilgesellschaft. Frank Adloff rekonstruiert zunächst die wechselhafte Geschichte des Begriffs, die schon mit Aristoteles begann, über das Mittelalter bis in die Neuzeit und die Moderne reicht und Denker wie Locke, Hegel, Tocqueville, Gramsci, Dewey, Arendt, Etzioni, Dahrendorf oder Habermas einschließt. Anschließend beschreibt er historische Entwicklungslinien und Beispiele der deutschen Zivilgesellschaft - als gesellschaftlicher und öffentlicher Raum von freiwilligen und politischen Assoziationen - vom 19. Jahrhundert bis heute. Am Ende stellt Adloff nationenübergreifende Formen von Zivilgesellschaft vor und zeigt, dass diese im Zeitalter der Globalisierung unerlässlich sind.

    Abstract: From the French Revolution onwards, constituent power has been a key concept for thinking about the principle of popular power, and how it should be realised through the state and its institutions. Tracing the history of constituent power across five key moments - the French Revolution, nineteenth-century French politics, the Weimar Republic, post-WWII constitutionalism, and political philosophy in the 1960s - Lucia Rubinelli reconstructs and examines the history of the principle. She argues that, at any given time, constituent power offered an alternative understanding of the power of the people to those offered by ideas of sovereignty. Constituent Power: A History also examines how, in turn, these competing understandings of popular power resulted in different institutional structures and reflects on why contemporary political thought is so prone to conflating constituent power with sovereignty.

    Abstract: In vielen europäischen Ländern sind rechte Bewegungen im Aufwind. Oder mit den Worten Jan Zielonkas: Eine Konterrevolution ist in Gang gekommen. Im Jahr 1990 sah das noch ganz anders aus. Der Eiserne Vorhang war gefallen und Zielonkas Lehrer Ralf Dahrendorf begrüßte eine Revolution in Europa; es herrschten Euphorie und Aufbruchsstimmung. Mittlerweile liegt die Europäische Union in Scherben, weil die politischen Eliten marktradikalen Ideen nachgelaufen sind und die liberale Demokratie verraten haben. Zielonka unterzieht die Entwicklungen einer unerbittlichen Analyse und formuliert ein starkes Plädoyer für eine offene Gesellschaft und eine Neuerfindung Europas

    Abstract: Sowohl in der Soziologie als auch in der Geschichtswissenschaft hat die Beschäftigung mit Gewalt in den vergangenen Jahren vielerlei Anregungen durch die »Neue Gewaltsoziologie« erfahren. Jedoch mehren sich in Fachkreisen die Zweifel, ob »dichte Beschreibungen« der Gewalt hinreichen, um sie zu verstehen, oder ob es nicht notwendig ist, Gewalt wieder stärker in Zusammenhänge zu stellen und aus ihnen heraus zu begreifen. Dieses Buch wählt einen gänzlich neuen Zugang: Es geht von der Anthropologie aus und versucht, deren Ergebnisse – insbesondere die Arbeiten der »Amazoniker«, meist französischer und brasilianischer Autoren, die hierzulande wenig gelesen werden – für den Entwurf einer Gewalttheorie zu nutzen, die verschiedene Wissenschaftsdisziplinen miteinander ins Gespräch bringt. In Gestalt eines Essays, in der Methode des Vergleichs und mit Blick auf nichtwestliche Kulturen gewinnt Michael Riekenberg faszinierende Gesichtspunkte und Kategorien, die es erlauben, in neuer Weise über die Gewalt in unserer Welt nachzudenken.

    Abstract: Die Europäische Union spaltet die öffentliche Meinung stärker als je zuvor. Befürworter der Staatengemeinschaft sehen sich mit Vorbehalten und deutlicher Kritik konfrontiert. Im Zentrum dieses Buches stehen die politische Integration und Desintegration Europas. Öffentliche Diskurse und politische Einstellungen sind über Landesgrenzen verflochten, aber diese politische Integration verleiht sozialen Spaltungslinien politische Sprengkraft. Die Analysen zeigen, dass die ungleichen Lebensverhältnisse eine Ursache für die gespaltene Meinung über die EU sind. Gleichzeitig führt die Wahrnehmung ungleicher Lebensverhältnisse auch zur Unzufriedenheit mit den Verhältnissen im eigenen Land.

    Abstract: Das Erstarken rechtspopulistischer Bewegungen führt zu einer Normverschiebung in europäischen Gesellschaften und erzeugt Spannungen, die sich in Polarisierung widerspiegeln. Es geht dabei weniger um Migration selbst als um die Prozesse, die stattfinden, wenn Migrant*innen und ihre Nachkommen ihre Rechte einfordern. Die Frage des Umgangs mit Migration wird so zur Chiffre für Anerkennung von Gleichheit in demokratischen Gesellschaften. Naika Foroutan zeigt, dass die Migrationsfrage zur neuen sozialen Frage geworden ist – an ihr werden Verteilungsgerechtigkeit und kulturelle Selbstbeschreibung ebenso wie die demokratische Verfasstheit verhandelt. »Wie hältst Du es mit der Migration?« steht für die Frage danach, was ausgehandelt werden muss, damit die plurale Demokratie zusammenhält. Die postmigrantische Gesellschaft ist also eine, die sich im Kontext der Debatten um den Stellenwert von Migration neu ordnet. // Quelle: Klappentext.

    Abstract: Wie steht es um die politische Gleichheit in Gesellschaften, in denen Einkommen immer weiter auseinanderdriften und die Armen sich kaum noch politisch beteiligen? Wessen Stimme findet Gehör? Mit einer umfassenden empirischen Untersuchung politischer Repräsentation in Deutschland zeigt die Autorin, dass die Entscheidungen des Deutschen Bundestages seit den 1980er-Jahren systematisch zugunsten oberer Berufs- und Einkommensgruppen verzerrt sind. In der Folge wird nicht nur das Gleichheitsversprechen der Demokratie verletzt, sondern es werden auch vermehrt Entscheidungen getroffen, die ökonomische Ungleichheit tendenziell verschärfen.

    Abstract: The regulation of civil society provides the framework under which those organisations can most effectively provide services in education, health, social services, housing, development aid and so on. Civil Society in Europe identifies common principles of civil society law in two ways. First, the approaches of the Council of Europe and the European Union are explored. Next civil society regulation in twelve domestic legal systems are investigated on a broad range of substantive areas of law including internal organisation, registration, external supervision, public benefit organisations and international activities. Lothar Böhnisch und Wolfgang Schröer zeigen: Wenn es um die Diskussion der Zukunft des Sozialen geht, führt eine nur auf den Sozialstaat fixierte Kritik der Sozialpolitik in die Sackgasse. Vielmehr ist es das Sozialpolitische Prinzip, von dem die eigentliche Wirkung und Kraft des Sozialen auch in der Gesellschaft der Zweiten Moderne ausgeht. Dieses Prinzip freizulegen, angesichts der gegenwärtigen Entwicklung zu erweitern und damit den einseitigen Sozialstaatsdiskurs wieder in ein dialektisches Fahrwasser zu bringen, ist das Anliegen dieses Buches.

    Abstract: "Politicising Europe presents the most comprehensive contribution to empirical research on politicisation to date. The study is innovative in both conceptual and empirical terms. Conceptually, the contributors develop and apply a new index and typology of politicisation. Empirically, the volume presents a huge amount of original data, tracing politicisation in a comparative perspective over more than forty years. Focusing on six European countries (Austria, France, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK) from the 1970s to the current euro crisis, the book examines conflicts over Europe in election campaigns, street protests, and public debates on every major step in the integration process. It shows that European integration has indeed become politicised.     Abstract: This book responds to the often loud debates about the place of Muslims in Western Europe by proposing an analysis based in institutions, including schools, courts, hospitals, the military, electoral politics, the labor market, and civic education courses. The contributors consider the way people draw on practical schemas regarding others in their midst who are often categorized as Muslims. Chapters based on fieldwork and policy analysis across several countries examine how people interact in their everyday work lives, where they construct moral boundaries, and how they formulate policies concerning tolerable diversity, immigration, discrimination, and political representation. Rather than assuming that each country has its own national ideology that explains such interactions, contributors trace diverse pathways along which institutions complicate or disrupt allegedly consistent national ideologies. These studies shed light on how Muslims encounter particular faces and facets of the state as they go about their lives, seeking help and legitimacy as new citizens of a fast-changing Europe.

    Abstract: Why are hopes fading for a single European identity? Economic integration has advanced faster and further than predicted, yet the European sense of 'who we are' is fragmenting. Exploiting decades of permissive consensus, Europe's elites designed and completed the single market, the euro, the Schengen passport-free zone, and, most recently, crafted an extraordinarily successful policy of enlargement. At the same time, these attempts to de-politicize politics, to create Europe by stealth, have produced a political backlash. This ambitious survey of identity in Europe captures the experiences of the winners and losers, optimists and pessimists, movers and stayers in a Europe where spatial and cultural borders are becoming ever more permeable. A full understanding of Europe's ambivalence, refracted through its multiple identities, lies at the intersection of competing European political projects and social processes

    Abstract: This book tells the dramatic story of the economic, social, political, and cultural transformation of Europe during the transition from the Cold War to the European Union. Ivan Berend charts, in particular, the overwhelming impact of the collapse of communism on every aspect of European life. Europe became safer and more united, and Central and Eastern Europe started on the difficult road to economic modernization. However, the western half of Europe also changed. European integration gained momentum. The single market and the common currency were introduced, and the Union enlarged from nine to twenty-seven countries. This period also saw a revolution in information and communication technology, the increasing impact of globalization and the radical restructuring of the political system. The book explores the impact of all of these changes as well as the new challenges posed by the economic crisis of 2008–9 and asks which way now for Europe?

Building on a survey of media institutions in eighteen West European and North American democracies, Hallin and Mancini identify the principal dimensions of variation in media systems and the political variables that have shaped their evolution. They go on to identify three major models of media system development, the Polarized Pluralist, Democratic Corporatist, and Liberal models; to explain why the media have played a different role in politics in each of these systems; and to explore the force of change that are currently transforming them.     Abstract: Feminist analysis shows that the prevailing concepts of citizenship often assume a male citizen. How, then, does this affect the agency and participation of women in modern democracies? This insightful book, first published in 2000, presents a systematic comparison of the links between women's social rights and democratic citizenship in three different citizenship models: republican citizenship in France, liberal citizenship in Britain, and social citizenship in Denmark. Birte Siim argues that France still suffers from the contradictions of pro-natalist policy, and that Britain is only just starting to re-conceptualise the male-breadwinner model that is still a dominant feature. In her examination of the dual-breadwinner model in Denmark, Siim presents research about Scandinavian social policy and makes an important and timely contribution to debates in political sociology, social policy and gender studies

    Abstract: The birthplace of the nation-state and modern nationalism at the end of the eighteenth century, Europe was supposed to be their graveyard at the end of the twentieth. Yet, far from moving beyond the nation-state, fin-de-siècle Europe has been moving back to the nation-state, most spectacularly with the disintegration of the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, and Czechoslovakia into a score of nationally defined successor states. This massive reorganisation of political space along national lines has engendered distinctive, dynamically interlocking, and in some cases explosive forms of nationalism. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu and the 'new institutionalist' sociology, and comparing contemporary nationalisms with those of interwar Europe, Rogers Brubaker provides a theoretically sophisticated and historically rich account of one of the most important problems facing the 'New Europe'

    Abstract: The historical impact of national movements in Europe has been dramatic and continues to be an issue of major importance. Leading historians discuss authoritatively European nationalism in its historical context. Nationalism is not of course a specifically European phenomenon, but for reasons of space and intelligibility coverage has been limited geographically. The aim is that the essays should attract readers interested in a historical problem which has been difficult to encompass theoretically and to deal with practically. A glance at what is being shown or written in the media with regard to national and ethnical issues demonstrates the validity of this aim, not only with regard to the multinational former Soviet Union or Yugoslavia in eastern Europe, but also (for example) to the 'four nations' of the British Isles or bi-national Belgium in the west

    Abstract: This book is a major sociological analysis of the characteristics and interrelationships of ethnicity, religion, and socio-economic class in Israeli society. The analysis of ethnicity focuses on the differences among Jews from different countries of origin (from Europe, North Africa and Asia), although there is also a chapter on Palestinian Arabs in Israel. This work takes the analysis of ethnic identities and relations much further than previous studies of Israeli society, and is the first to compare the importance of ethnicity with both religion and class and to illustrate the nature of the relationships between all three divisions. The combination of sophisticated theory and research advances the study of Israeli society in particular and the study of social cleavages and conflicts within society in general

    Abstract: Umfang und Niveau der informationellen Automatisierung unterschiedlicher Behörden weichen in erheblichem Maße voneinander ab. Der direkte Vergleich von Finanzämtern, Staatsanwaltschaften und Kriminalpolizei in dieser Studie macht dies deutlich. Solche Unterschiede lassen sich nicht hinreichend auf technische Möglichkeiten oder Sachgesetzlichkeiten der jeweiligen Aufgabenstellung zurückführen.     Abstract: It has become something of an orthodoxy of contemporary sociology that modern democratic industrial societies are essentially alike, and that they are confronted by uniform challenges, whether industrial (strikes and demonstrations), social (the 'crisis of the welfare state'), or political. In this important collection of studies Professor Birnbaum asserts, however, that the very existence of differentiation, challenge such a hypothesis. Linking historical and sociological investigation, Birnbaum argues that it is only through divergent state-formation that regional and national state variations in, for example, industrial conflict, policing or ideological configuration can be explained. His analysis of the influence of each type of state upon the development of various collective action and mobilisation processes establishes the crucial importance of the state as a quasi-independent variable

    Abstract: Work and Politics develops a historical and comparative sociology of workplace relations in industrial capitalist societies. Professor Sabel argues that the system of mass production using specialized machines and mostly unskilled workers was the result of the distribution of power and wealth in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Great Britain and the United States, not of an inexorable logic of technological advance. Once in place, this system created the need for workers with systematically different ideas about the acquisition of skill and the desirability of long-term employment. Professor Sabel shows how capitalists have played on naturally existing division in the workforce in order to match workers with diverse ambitions to jobs in different parts of the labor market. But he also demonstrates the limits, different from work group to work group, of these forms of collaboration
