Wieso braucht Rassismus, um an sein konsequentes Ende zu gelangen, nicht nur ein biologistisch-naturalisierendes Moment, sondern gleichermaßen eine Verortung in einem absoluten und eindeutig geographisch zu fassenden Raum?

    Abstract: »Postmigrantisch« steht für gesellschaftliche Zustände, die durch die Erfahrung der Migration strukturiert sind. Migration wird dabei als soziale Praxis verstanden, die politisch, medial und sozial kontrovers verhandelt und reguliert wird - und gleichzeitig Gesellschaften nachhaltig prägt. In diesem Band geht es um eine Gegenwartsanalyse, die aktuelle gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen als Ganzes in den Blick nimmt. In den Beiträgen stehen nicht ›die Migrant*innen‹ im Mittelpunkt, sondern die Verwobenheiten von verschiedenen Akteur*innen, Geschichten und Kontexten. Postmigrantische Perspektiven werden hierbei mit transnationalen, postkolonialen und diversitätsbewussten Ansätzen zusammengebracht und mithilfe einer dezidiert feministischen, gendersoziologischen, intersektionalen Perspektive erweitert. Das Potenzial einer postmigrantischen Perspektive wird im Kontext von Gender, Transnationalität, Care und anderen Forschungsfeldern (neu) erprobt.

This collection shows how maps are created and transformed as a part of political struggle, for critical research or in art and education: from indigenous territories in the Amazon to the anti-eviction movement in San Francisco; from defending commons in Mexico to mapping refugee camps with balloons in Lebanon; from slums in Nairobi to squats in Berlin; from supporting communities in the Philippines to reporting sexual harassment in Cairo.     Abstract: Analysing recent documentary films dealing with undocumented migration at the Schengen Area's fringes and against the backdrop of what has been termed the `European refugee crisis', Jan Kühnemund investigates the interface between migration discourses and image discourses. As an analytical framework, he conceptualises `Borderland Schengen' as a visual-political transnational space emerging from the interplay of migration movements and border policies. Putting the spaces and iconologies of `illegal' migration under scrutiny and aiming at establishing their protagonists as subjects, Kühnemund in this regard reads the films as attempts at discursive participation as an aesthetic political practice.

In Auseinandersetzung mit dieser Frage knüpft Johanna Hoerning an klassische soziologische Analysen ebenso wie an aktuelle Debatten kritisch an. Die vergleichende Untersuchung fußt auf einem raumtheoretischen Verständnis von Städten, das den Fragmentierungsbegriff als heuristisches Konzept der Stadtanalyse einführt sowie Strukturen und Praktiken der alltäglichen Stadterfahrung miteinander verbindet. Der empirische Fokus auf Brasilien erweitert dabei zugleich den euro-amerikanischen Rahmen wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisproduktion.

    Abstract: How has »ethnic entrepreneurship« emerged and developed since the late eighties in Berlin? In his study, Baris Ülker answers this question by relying on the experiences of immigrants from Turkey. Most academic studies on »ethnic entrepreneurship« have focused either on the »most unitary« structure available in the »natural flow of history« or on the pre-given »cultural« characteristics of immigrants. This book instead sets historical ruptures, conditions of possibility and individual practices in context. It analyzes how human beings have been turned into »ethnic entrepreneurs« and explains the ways of governing the self and others in the neoliberal urban context

Was quantitative Studien bereits seit geraumer Zeit zeigen, ist jedoch bislang nur am Rande mittels qualitativer Methoden und mit Fokus auf die persönlichen Sichtweisen der Frauen untersucht worden. Anna Caroline Cösters Studie setzt an dieser Leerstelle an und bietet detaillierte Einblicke in die subjektiven Perspektiven der weiblichen Bevölkerung eines solchen Stadtteils. Sie macht so eine Vielfalt an Lebensgeschichten zugänglich und leistet damit einen differenzierten Beitrag zur Benennung von frauenspezifischen Problemen - aber auch Potenzialen - in Zuwandererstadtteilen.

    Abstract: Die alltägliche Begegnung mit dem Fremden wird oft als eine Quelle der Verunsicherung gesehen - und als eine der Ursachen für Fremdenfeindlichkeit. Was aber, wenn das Gegenteil der Fall ist? Abseits der Diskussionen um Minaretthöhen stellt diese Studie anhand des konkreten Beispiels kleiner migrantengeführter Lebensmittelgeschäfte die Integrationsfrage dort, wo das Zusammenleben mit dem Fremden tagtäglich erprobt wird. Dabei wird von alltagspraktischem Wirtschaftshandeln auf lokaler Ebene ausgegangen und mittels ethnographischer Methoden schrittweise ein praktisches und theoretisches Verständnis der eigentlichen Problematik gewonnen. Diese zeigt sich hier weniger in kultureller Differenz als in der Aushandlung sozialer Rollen vor dem Hintergrund alltäglicher Praktiken des Einkaufs.

    Abstract: "The past thirty years have seen a proliferation of new forms of territorial governance that have come to co-exist with, and complement, formal territorial spaces of government. These governance experiments have resulted in the creation of soft spaces, new geographies with blurred boundaries that eschew existing political-territorial boundaries of elected tiers of government. The emergence of new, non-statutory or informal spaces can be found at multiple levels across Europe, in a variety of circumstances, and with diverse aims and rationales. This book moves beyond theory to examine the practice of soft spaces. It employs an empirical approach to better understand the various practices and rationalities of soft spaces and how they manifest themselves in different planning contexts. By looking at the effects of new forms of spatial governance and the role of spatial planning in North-western Europe, this book analyses discursive changes in planning policies in selected metropolitan areas and cross-border regions. The result is an exploration of how these processes influence the emergence of soft spaces, governance arrangements and the role of statutory planning in different contexts.This book provides a deeper understanding of space and place, territorial governance and network governance.     Abstract: Zunehmende Disparitäten innerhalb von Städten, Privatisierung staatlicher Bereiche, steigende Wohnkosten - Prozesse wie diese manifestieren sich in einzelnen Stadtvierteln und schaffen Bedingungen für Initiativen der Bevölkerung. Gleichzeitig verändern sich Orte in ihren Bedeutungen durch das Handeln der Menschen auf der einen und durch staatliche Strategien auf der anderen Seite. Manuela Wade geht diesen Prozessen nach und zeigt, wie die Bewohner_innen von drei ausgewählten Stadtvierteln in unterschiedlichen Teilen der Welt damit umgehen, welche Rolle Wohnen in diesem Kontext spielt und warum dies zu einer Repolitisierung der Stadt führen kann.

    Abstract: "The regeneration of critical urban areas through the redesign of public space with the intense involvement of local communities seems to be the central focus of place-making according to some widespread practices in academic and professional circles. Recently, new expertise maintains that place-making could be an innovative and potentially autonomous field, competing with more traditional disciplines like urban planning, urban design, architecture and others. This book affirms that the question of 'making better places for people' should be understood in a broader sense, as a symptom of the non-contingent limitations of the urban and spatial disciplines. It maintains that research should not be oriented only towards new technical or merely formal solutions but rather towards the profound rethinking of disciplinary paradigms. In the fields of urban planning, urban design and policy-making, the challenge of place-making provides scholars and practitioners a great opportunity for a much-needed critical review. Only the substantial reappraisal of long-standing (technical, cultural, institutional and social) premises and perspectives can truly improve place-making practices. The pressing need for place-making implies trespassing undue disciplinary boundaries and experimenting a place-based approach that can innovate and integrate planning regulations, strategic spatial visioning and urban development projects. Moreover, the place-making challenge compels urban experts and policy-makers to critically reflect upon the physical and social contexts of their interventions. In this sense, facing place-making today is a way to renew the civic and social role of urban planning and urban design"--

    Abstract: "Across Europe there is a rapidly changing context for undertaking regional development. In the 20th century, development of the former planned economies (Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia), was defined by these countries differences, rather than their common ideological roots. These disparities altered over time and were marked by changing social structures. However, the ranking of regions has remained the same as core areas have strengthened their positions while the structural obstacles to the modernisation of peripheral areas have remained due to a lack of coherent regional policy. This book examines the specific regional development paths of Central and Eastern European countries and evaluates the effects of the determining factors of this process. Through analysis of the system of objectives, instruments and institutions used in different eras, and case studies of Hungary, East Germany and Germany, development models are established and compared with Western European patterns. The book summarises the experiences of Central and Eastern European regional cooperation and examines the basic nature of the cohesion problems of the Carpathian Basin trans-national macro region. It confirms by comparative historical analyses that the transformation was indeed unique. This book will make a welcome addition to the literature for students and academics interested in the broader picture of Central and Eastern European politics, future integration within the European Union and the history of regional development processes"--

    Abstract: "This book concludes a trilogy that began with Intelligent Cities: Innovation, Knowledge Systems and digital spaces (Routledge 2002) and Intelligent Cities and Globalisation of Innovation Networks (Routledge 2008). Together these books examine intelligent cities as environments of innovation and collaborative problem-solving. In this final book, the focus is on planning, strategy and governance of intelligent cities. Divided into three parts, each section elaborates upon complementary aspects of intelligent city strategy and planning. Part I is about the drivers and architectures of the spatial intelligence of cities, while Part II turns to planning processes and discusses top-down and bottom-up planning for intelligent cities. Cities such as Amsterdam, Manchester, Stockholm and Helsinki are examples of cities that have used bottom-up planning through the gradual implementation of successive initiatives for regeneration. On the other hand, Living PlanIT, Neapolis in Cyprus, and Saudi Arabia intelligent cities have started with the top-down approach, setting up urban operating systems and common central platforms. Part III focuses on intelligent city strategies; how cities should manage the drivers of spatial intelligence, create smart environments, mobilise communities, and offer new solutions to address city problems.
