Werden jedoch bestimmte Triggerpunkte berührt, verschärft sich schlagartig die Debatte: Gleichstellung ja, aber bitte keine »Gendersprache«! „Oft wird behauptet, die Gesellschaft sei gespalten wie nie. Aber stimmt das? Drei Soziologen gehen dieser Frage nach, indem sie das deutsche Stimmungsbild zu Themen wie Klimaschutz oder Diversität analysieren.     Abstract: The Unfinished Politics of Race argues that the past few decades have seen important transformations in the politics of race. Contending that existing accounts have focused narrowly on the mainstream political sphere, this study argues that there is a need to explore the role of race more widely. By exploring the mainstream as well as transitional and alternative spheres of political mobilisation the authors stress the need to link the analysis of both local and national processes in order to make sense of the changing contours of racialised politics. The underlying concern of this study is to outline both a theoretical frame for an analysis of racial politics, and detailed empirical accounts of different arenas of political mobilisation. By exploring the unfinished politics of race, this study provides a timely reminder that the position of racial and ethnic minorities in political institutions remains deeply contested.

Als fortschrittlich oder regressiv versteht sie nicht nur das Resultat, sondern vor allem die Gestalt gesellschaftlicher Transformationen selbst.     Abstract: "Ma dama al-shabab m'ana fainana la shaka najihun With the youth at our side, there is no doubt we will succeed.1 This slogan from the Kata'ib, a Lebanese youth organization, reflects a sentiment shared across the globe in the twentieth century: youth, however defined-by age, class, gender- mattered. Kata'ib leadership knew this, and surely had the youth with them, whether measured by the tens of thousands of young Kata'ib members, their investment in the group's ideology, or their participation in Kata'ib rituals. In July 1958, for example, the Kata'ib held a ceremony for new members at its headquarters in Beirut, Bayt al-Kata'ib, or the "Kata'ib home." In the space that hosted many gatherings, ranging from lectures to sport tournaments, young men and women congregated alongside party officials and supporters to "perform the oath" (ta'diyya al-yamin). This included the routine dedication to party and nation, "in service of Lebanon," another Kata'ib slogan since the 1930s. Thereafter, recruits received their membership cards from the president of the party, Pierre Gemayel. He congratulated each individual on their "engagement in the new party life."2 The event then ended with the singing of the Kata'ib anthem, played by its very own band"--

    Abstract: Our conception of the culture and values of the ancient Greco-Roman world is largely based on texts and material evidence left behind by a small and atypical group of city-dwellers. The people of the deep Mediterranean countryside seldom appear in the historical record from antiquity, and almost never as historical actors. This book is the first extended historical ethnography of an ancient village society, based on an extraordinarily rich body of funerary and propitiatory inscriptions from a remote upland region of Roman Asia Minor. Rural kinship structures and household forms are analysed in detail, as are the region's demography, religious life, gender relations, class structure, normative standards and values. Roman north-east Lydia is perhaps the only non-urban society in the Greco-Roman world whose culture can be described at so fine-grained a level of detail: a world of tight-knit families, egalitarian values, hard agricultural labour, village solidarity, honour, piety and love

Taking a broad view of governance, this book includes a comprehensive analysis of governance of the Khawaja Sira across legal, social and administrative institutions. It also argues that labels like third gender and transgender fails to account for the gender fluid lives and multiple types of individuals who identify as Khawaja Sira, yet these categories, largely imported from the west, are used without much thought to govern this heterogeneous group

    Abstract: In der Moderne dominierte der Glaube, die Welt ließe sich gestalten und der Fortschritt sorge quasi automatisch für ein besseres Morgen. Erderwärmung, Wachstumskrise und subjektive Überlastungen haben diesen Optimismus erschüttert. Heute geht es in erster Linie darum, die Katastrophe abzuschwächen. Und selbst wenn dies gelingen sollte, werden wir mit dem Wandel umgehen müssen. Fragen der Selbsterhaltung überlagern dann jene der individuellen und kollektiven Selbstentfaltung. Anpassung wird zum Leitmotiv der Gesellschaft. Auch die Corona-Pandemie hat gezeigt, dass wir im Angesicht der Interdependenz und der ökologischen Gefahren nicht länger der grenzenlosen Emanzipation huldigen können. Stattdessen, so Philipp Staab, wird die nächste Gesellschaft vor allem mit der Stabilisierung einer prekär werdenden Ordnung befasst sein. Daraus resultiert allerdings eine Krise des Selbst- und Zeitverhältnisses, auf die auch die Linke eine Antwort finden muss

Sie verweisen darauf, dass in vielen Gesellschaften ein Kampf um die Wirklichkeit der Wirklichkeit entbrannt zu sein scheint. Der Soziologe Nils C. Kumkar betrachtet diese Phänomene jedoch aus einem anderen Blickwinkel: Ausgehend von Fallstudien zu den Auseinandersetzungen um Corona, den Klimawandel und die Größe des Publikums bei der Amtseinführung Donald Trumps, plädiert er dafür, "alternative Fakten" nicht primär als Versatzstücke einer Parallelwelt zu verstehen, sondern als diskursive Nebelkerzen im Kontext polarisierter Debatten. Sie wirken, so Kumkar, nicht als Beitrag zur Konstruktion einer alternativen Realität, sondern als kommunikative Realitätsdestruktion, die es erlaubt, wider besseres Wissen weiterzumachen wie bisher.

Through an interdisciplinary study of French colonial modernity, Hannoum examines how colonialism made extensive use of translations of Greek, Roman, and Arabic texts and harnessed high technologies of power to reconfigure the region and invent it. But is this actually true? Nowrasteh and Powell systematically analyze cross-country evidence of potential negative effects caused by immigration relating to economic freedom, corruption, culture, and terrorism. They analyze case studies of mass immigration to the United States, Israel, and Jordan. Their evidence does not support the idea that immigration destroys the institutions responsible for prosperity in the modern world. This nonideological volume makes a qualified case for free immigration and the accompanying prosperity.

    Abstract: By the mid-twentieth century, youth movements around the globe ruled the streets. In Lebanon, young people in these groups attended lectures, sang songs, and participated in sporting events; their music tastes, clothing choices and routine activities shaped their identities. Yet scholars of modern Lebanon often focus exclusively on the sectarian makeup and violent behaviors of these socio-political groupings, obscuring the youth cultures that they forged. Using unique sources to highlight the daily lives of the young men and women of Lebanon's youth politics, Dylan Baun traces the political and cultural history of a diverse set of youth-centric organizations from the 1920s to 1950s to reveal how these youth movements played significant roles in the making of the modern Middle East. Outlining how youth movements established a distinct type of politics and populism, Winning Lebanon reveals that these groups both encouraged the political socialization of different types of youth, and, through their attempts to 'win' Lebanon - physically and metaphorically - around the 1958 War, helped produce sectarian violence.

    Abstract: In Zeiten tiefgreifender sozialer Umbrüche und manifester Krisen schlägt die Stunde grundsätzlicher Analysen, welche die gegenwärtige Gesellschaft als ganze in den Blick nehmen, ihre Strukturmerkmale und Dynamiken untersuchen und vielleicht sogar Wege aus der krisenhaften Entwicklung aufzeigen. In jüngster Zeit haben Andreas Reckwitz und Hartmut Rosa großangelegte, jedoch ganz unterschiedlich akzentuierte Gesellschaftstheorien vorgelegt, welche die gegenwärtigen Debatten über die Spätmoderne maßgeblich bestimmen. In diesem gemeinsamen Buch treten sie nun in einen kritischen Dialog. Ausgehend von dem geteilten Anliegen, dass die Analyse der Moderne als Sozialformation ins Zentrum einer Soziologie gehört, die ihre Aufgabe der Aufklärung der Gesellschaft über sich selbst ernst nimmt, entfalten sie in umfangreichen Essays zunächst ihre je eigene gesellschaftstheoretische Perspektive: Während Reckwitz "soziale Praktiken", "Kontingenz" und "Singularisierung" als Leitbegriffe wählt, entscheidet sich Rosa für "Beschleunigung", "Steigerung" und "Resonanz". Im zweiten Teil des Buches spitzen sie ihre Positionen nochmals zu, arbeiten Gemeinsamkeiten heraus, markieren aber auch grundlegende Differenzen - und zwar im direkten, von Martin Bauer moderierten Gespräch. „Die Soziologen Andreas Reckwitz und Hartmut Rosa haben beide in großen Werken die krisenhafte Gegenwart untersucht – ihre Vorstellungen darüber unterscheiden sich grundsätzlich. Leading commentators, United Kingdom courts, and the European Court of Human Rights have de-emphasised the special importance of religious liberty. In this liberal egalitarian account, religious liberty claims are often rejected when faced with competing individual interests - the neutral secular state must protect us against the liberty-constraining acts of religions. Joel Harrison challenges this account.     Abstract: American political observers express increasing concern about affective polarization, i.e., partisans' resentment toward political opponents. We advance debates about America's partisan divisions by comparing affective polarization in the US over the past 25 years with affective polarization in 19 other western publics. We conclude that American affective polarization is not extreme in comparative perspective, although Americans' dislike of partisan opponents has increased more rapidly since the mid-1990s than in most other Western publics. We then show that affective polarization is more intense when unemployment and inequality are high; when political elites clash over cultural issues such as immigration and national identity; and in countries with majoritarian electoral institutions. Our findings situate American partisan resentment and hostility in comparative perspective, and illuminate correlates of affective polarization that are difficult to detect when examining the American case in isolation

    Abstract: How does international context influence state policies toward religious minorities? Using parliamentary proceedings, court decisions, newspaper archives, and interviews, this book is the first systematic study that employs international context in the study of state policies toward religion, and that compares Turkey and France with regard to religious minorities. Comparing Christians in Turkey and Muslims in France, this book argues that policy change toward minorities becomes possible when strong domestic actors find a suitable international context that can help them execute their policy agendas. The Turkish Islamists used the European Union to transform the Turkish politics that brought a reformist moment for Christians in the 2000s. The Far Right in France utilized the rise of Islamophobia in Europe to adopt restrictive policies toward Muslims. Ramazan Kılınç argues that the presence of an international context that can favor particular groups over others, shifts the domestic balance of power, and makes some policies more likely to be implemented than others.

    Abstract: American political observers express increasing concern about affective polarization, i.e., partisans' resentment toward political opponents. We advance debates about America's partisan divisions by comparing affective polarization in the US over the past 25 years with affective polarization in 19 other western publics. We conclude that American affective polarization is not extreme in comparative perspective, although Americans' dislike of partisan opponents has increased more rapidly since the mid-1990s than in most other Western publics. We then show that affective polarization is more intense when unemployment and inequality are high; when political elites clash over cultural issues such as immigration and national identity; and in countries with majoritarian electoral institutions. Our findings situate American partisan resentment and hostility in comparative perspective, and illuminate correlates of affective polarization that are difficult to detect when examining the American case in isolation

    Abstract: Despite being central to the development of Saharan regional connectivity, northern Chad has been closed to researchers since the late 1960s and thus remains virtually unknown to scholarship. Based on long-term fieldwork, The Value of Disorder is an original and in-depth account of the area and its Tubu majority inhabitants. Julien Brachet and Judith Scheele examine trans-border connectivity and trade; civil war and rebellion; wealth creation and dispersal; labour and gender relations; and aspirations to moral autonomy in northern Chad from an internal point of view - a point of view that in turn participates in a dynamic process of regional interdependence. Vividly ethnographic, the book gives precedence to local categories of value, while asking broader questions about the nature of non-state regional political organisation. Questions that inform current political developments in the Sahara more widely, and have the potential to challenge key concepts in Saharan studies and the social sciences.

    Abstract: A conceptually rich, historically informed, and interdisciplinary study of the contentious politics emerging out of decades of authoritarian neoliberal economic reform, The Roots of Revolt examines the contested political economy of Egypt from Nasser to Mubarak, just prior to the Arab Uprisings of 2010-11. Based on extensive fieldwork conducted across rural and urban Egypt, Angela Joya employs an 'on the ground' approach to critical political economy that challenges the interpretations of Egyptian politics put forward by scholars of both democratization and authoritarianism. By critically reassessing the relationship between democracy and capitalist development, Joya demonstrates how renewed authoritarian politics were required to institutionalize neoliberal reforms demanded by the International Monetary Fund, presenting the real-world impact of economic policy on the lives of ordinary Egyptians before the Arab Uprisings.

It recounts the extraordinary and often neglected story of the Nigerian people who were drawn into a global war, the enormous demands it made on their resources, and the way it would change both their lives and the societies they lived in. By placing the role that African societies played in the war within the contextual and theoretical frameworks of colonialism, race, gender, identity, labour, intellectual, and social history, Korieh challenges the dominant perception that World War II was primarily a European conflict and reveals the global impact of ordinary Nigerians on the war effort.

Kirmse challenges these assumptions in this important new study of empire-building, minority rights, and legal practice in late tsarist Russia, revealing how legal reform transformed ordinary people's interaction with state institutions from the 1860s to the 1890s. By focusing on two regions that stood out for their ethnic and religious diversity, the book follows the spread of the new legal institutions into the open steppe of Southern Russia, especially Crimea, and into the fields and forests of the Middle Volga region around the ancient Tatar capital of Kazan.     Abstract: When the Chinese communists came to power in 1949, they promised to 'turn society upside down'. Efforts to build a communist society created hopes and dreams, coupled with fear and disillusionment. The Chinese people made great efforts towards modernization and social change in this period of transition, but they also experienced traumatic setbacks. Covering the period 1949 to 1976 and then tracing the legacy of the Mao era through the 1980s, Felix Wemheuer focuses on questions of class, gender, ethnicity, and the urban-rural divide in this new social history of Maoist China. He analyzes the experiences of a range of social groups under Communist rule - workers, peasants, local cadres, intellectuals, 'ethnic minorities', the old elites, men and women. To understand this tumultuous period, he argues, we must recognize the many complex challenges facing the People's Republic. But we must not lose sight of the human suffering and political terror that, for many now ageing quietly across China, remain the period's abiding memory.

    Abstract: This is a study of Vietnam's socialist transition and state transformation, generally known as đổi mới. It examines the drivers of socialist-regime change, the nature of the đổi mới state, and the basis of regime legitimacy in Vietnam. The Element argues that despite its 'one-party rule' label, the party-state apparatus that channels said rule has become fragmented. State-building during the đổi mới period involved negotiations and bargaining that redefine authority and power relations within the state apparatus. The party-state's accountability projects are designed to target the specific self-aggrandizing tendencies of the state apparatus, its policies, and abuse of state power. At the leadership level, patterns of resource allocation underlying the đổi mới growth model as well as the VCP's cadre rotation approach have accommodated central and sub-national state elites across sectors and levels, helping shore up the legitimacy of the đổi mới state in the eyes of the state elite. The combination of sustained economic growth, expansion of political space, accountability, and tolerance of small-scale public protests have been factors in strengthening regime-society legitimization.
