Abstract: In the globalized economy, labor migration has become of central importance. A key issue in the analysis of immigration is how the migrants fare in the economy in which they migrate, and how they assimilate towards the behavior of the natives. Using data from the United States, Canada, many European countries, Australia and New Zealand, the chapters study the developments of earnings, employment, unemployment, self-employment, occupational choices and educational attainment after migration. The book also investigates the role of language in labor market integration and examines the situation of illegal, legalized and unwilling migrants. Policy effects are also studied: Among those are the effects of selection criteria of labor market success and the effects immigrants have on the public sector budget of the receiving country. Hence, the book provides a broad picture of the performance of migrants

Abstract: Many countries will be confronted with ageing populations in the coming decades. This will crucially affect the economic outlook for the economy. Population changes directly affect the size of the labour force and consequently potential employment and output growth. In addition, changes in demographic trends strongly influence savings and investment behaviour, the outlook for the public finances, a range of financial market variables and, more controversially, may impact on the pace of productivity growth in an economy. Because the timing and magnitude of demographic changes varies significantly across regions, international capital flows will play an important role for the allocation of investment. This book offers a comprehensive treatment of ageing related issues based on a five region overlapping generations model and provides a quantitative assessment until 2050

Abstract: Inverse Projection is a method for estimating accurate demographic indicators of a population where vital registration data are available, but population censuses are lacking or unreliable. The book offers an overview of the present state of methodological development in the field of inverse projection techniques. In the various chapters of the book, leading experts in demography and related fields review the method, discuss recent extensions, test performances, and stress differences of the various procedures. The book is intended for all scientists who are interested in the reconstruction of demographic scenarios in particular situations, with specific kinds of data, as well as for statisticians and mathematicians who are attracted by this fascinating field of application

Abstract: The monograph demonstrates the widespread existence of differences in life span by month of birth in the elderly populations of contemporary societies. It provides evidence that the pattern is linked to the seasons of the year, by comparing the Northern and the Southern Hemisphere. It formulates and tests a series of explanations for the month-of-birth effect and rejects many of the most frequently offered explanations. In particular, it rejects those that attribute the month-of-birth effect to social or statistical confounding. It establishes a link between the month-of-birth pattern in the life span and the month-of-birth pattern in survival during the first year of life. It provides evidence that nutrition and infectious disease early in life play an important role in adult health and survival later in life and that the differences in life span by month of birth still exist in cohorts born today

Abstract: This book evaluates the evidence on the impacts of population growth on well-being in developing countries and concludes that slowing population growth from high current levels, especially in poor, agrarian societies facing pressure on land and resources, is advantageous to economic development, health, food availablitiy, housing, poverty, the environment, and possibly education. It also concludes that while other economic and social policies may affect one or a few of these components of well-being more directly, few, if any, are likely to have the breadth of impact of family planning programmes

Abstract: Although the issue of migration has received substantial attention in public debate in most countries of the West, only moderately satisfactory attention has been given in the economic literature. This book analyses the case of Germany from an economic point of view. It examines questions such as: Are there substantial negative side-effects of migration, faced by native workers, as sometimes publicly claimed? Do highly skilled and unskilled natives experience different effects? Do certain foreigner national groups affect natives differently? How important is the level of education of these incoming foreigners in determining wage impacts on natives? Do native workers in some industries profit from migration, while others suffer? How is the industrial wage structure affected by migration, if at all?

Abstract: The Swedish welfare model has changed since the 1970s primarily due to Sweden's financial problems, which are associated with an excessively large public sector. Sweden has the highest proportion of old people in the world, the highest proportion of cohabiting couples, the highest proportion of children born outside wedlock, and the highest proportion of refugees in relation to population. This book deals with the development of the Swedish welfare system, its present stage and problems, analyses the causes, including economic and demographic effects, and shows solutions to the problems and what other countries can learn from the Swedish experience of the social welfare system

Abstract: The Indian Ocean island of Mauritius was chosen as a case study for an in-depth analysis of the complex and controversial interactions between population, economic development, and environmental constraints. Mauritius, with one of the world's highest population densities, has excellent data for such an analysis. During the 1960s/70s it experienced the world's most rapid fertility decline, followed by a remarkable economic boom. Rapid industrialization, however, threatens the environment. The computer simulation model described in this book shows possible paths of future development that can lead to sustainable economic growth and high social development, even under high environmental standards

Abstract: Economic Policy in a Demographically Divided World contains the economic analysis of the consequences of demographic change and the diverging population developments in an interdependent world economy in particular. The global divergence in demographic developments gives rise to a myriadof economic and ethical problems. This topic is treated with the help of themathematical apparatus of neoclassical optimal growth models. The author tries to disentangle the basic policy issues of a demographically divided world, such as a selective immigration policy, sustainable patterns of international lending and borrowing, development aid, and dynamic optimal taxation. The most important feature of the book is that it brings together information and theories of fairly recent date to analyse a practical policy problem, viz. issues related to a world economy that is characterised by a demographic division. This stylised fact is hardly given some attention in current economic theory and the book contains with respect to this stylised fact some new results. Customers might benefit from the book by gaining intuition concerning principles of economic policy in a world characterised by demographic change

Abstract: Serious research into the causes and implications of an aging population is a relatively recent phenomenon. Though several relevant issues of aging havereceived considerable attention in public and political discussions (especially in European countries and in Japan), the economics profession is somewhat lacking behind. This is particularly true for thetheoretical underpinnings of the economics of population aging. Until now, the aging-debate is primarily led by institutionalists. The present book with its analytical and econometric studies on fiscal implications of population aging is an important step in the process of theoretical analysis of aging. It is of interest both for population economists (and demographers) and for public economists - providing a bridge between these areas of research

Abstract: A model of household decisions based on a bargaining approach is developed providing a comprehensive framework for the analysis of family behavior. Treating the family as an economic organization, household behavior is explained by the cooperation of utility maximizing individuals. The difference to traditional microeconomic household models is that theassumption of a joint household utility function is abandoned. Instead of this, a game theoretic approach is used to model family decisions as a result of intrafamily bargaining. Considering the development of the spouses` human capital in a dynamic approach, the long-term effects of intrafamily specialization in market work and work at home are analyzed. Onemajor finding is that in a dynamic setting non-Pareto efficient allocations may result. Empirical tests demonstrate the relevanace of the bargaining approach

Abstract: It is the main purpose of the book to give a logically consistent foundation of migration decision making under incomplete information in a unified framework. Decision rules for migration are derived from a general model of Stochastic Dynamic Programming and the properties of temporary migration equilibria are discussed as well. Finally, some hints are given for esti- mating the theoretical models which are elaborated in the book. Many results concerning the properties of optimal migration policies and of temporary migration equilibria are new. For example, it is demonstrated that less information about a country might it make more attractive for immigration, and conditions are analyzed that imply the existence of a significant stream of migrants even between identical countries in a temporary equilibrium state. The book is written for the mathematically oriented reader in economics, operations research or econometrics who is interested in application of Stochastic Dynamic Programming to an important field of research in population economics

Abstract: This book deals with on-the-job training (OJT) of employees. Given fast-changing technology and an aging labor force, many industrialized countries must consider whether a sufficient amount of investment is being undertaken. The papers in this volume offer new evidence on the amount of OJT that occurs, and a re-examination of standard economic theory. One key assumption in former research was that employees themselves would absorb the cost of "general" training, i.e., OJT that produces portable skills or knowledge. However, that assumption remained empirically untested. New surveys that have measured OJT directly now permit testing of this assumption. Results, as reported in several chapters of this book, fail to confirm this assumption. It appears that employers are not able, in fact, to "sell" OJT to employees. Markets therefore do not provide enough OJT. Even if employees do absorb some of thecost of their own training, they may not buy enough of it, because the risk associated with such investment cannot be hedged or insured. New proposals are presented to address this problem. Learning in workplaces includes solving problems and improving the productive process. Some chapters in this book describe the features of organizations where such learning occurs. Externalities associated with certain of these features, in particular employment security, may also give rise tomarket failure

Abstract: This book is primarily a critical survey of small-case, theoretical macro models that attempts to analyze the cyclical behavior of modern economies. The authors emphasize the role of the labor market, which is treated very differently in such models. They show how the development of business cycle models owes almost as much to the development of analytic methods as to the economic events that make analysis necessary; this leads to the examination of the changing nature of the mathematical tools that have been used by business cycle theorists. They give examples of how these newer tools can deal with nonlinear models that are capable of generating a richer variety of dynamic outcomes than was possible with linear models. The treatment of these topics does not require a strong background in mathematics and the authors' goal is to call attention to the new methods and provide examples of the results that are possible with them rather than to teach those methods in detail. In addition to the survey material, they describe a regime switching model of their own that is capable of generating cyclical behavior. This model is greatly influenced by its labor market component, in which a nonlinearity is introduced through the device of switching between linear behavioral equations. The model is analyzed analytically and with simulation experiments

Abstract: In recent years, population economics has become increasingly popular in both economic and policy analysis. For the inquiry into the long term development of an economy, the interaction between demographic change and economic activity cannot be neglected without omitting major aspects of the problems. This volume helps to further developments in theoretical and applied demographical economics covering the issues of demographic change and economic development. The interaction between demographic change and economic development in the long run is one central issue. One conjecture is that it is mainly the relative population pressure which controls the pace of economic development. However, econometric evidence presented in the book does not support this hypothesis. Other papers deal with the relationships between fertility and business cycle fluctuations, the timing of births, the efficiency in intergenerational transfers, the role of open economies for the population issue, historical perspectives of demographic change in Hungary and an outline of recent developments of applied modelling using input-output models, programming models or econometric techniques

Abstract: The notion of optimum population has attracted the attention of economists ever since economics was made a science. Roots can be traced back to ancient Greece. The topic has recently found rising interest among population economists and demographers. The economic concept of optimum population seeks to define the population size, which maximizes a welfare criterion of the society. The purpose of this book is to outline this concept from a micro and macro perspective and to link it with issues of technical progress, social security, limited resources and migration. It treats fertility endogenously and studies its welfare and policy implications. The emphasis is on a rigorous theoretical treatment of the subject using the modern growth and welfare theory as well as the new classical micro model of the family

Abstract: This book studies the consequences of demographic change for optimal economic growth in a closed economy. It connects the analytical tools of traditional growth theory with the actual demographic experience of most industrialized countries. A natural way of incorporating the demographic structure into growth models is by making the model one of overlapping generations, thus allowing for explicit analysis of demographic forces as potential sources of non-stationarities in economic development. The book offers a number of economic growth models with which the effects on social welfare of demography, investment in physical and human capital, and technical progress can be analyzed. Using these models, rules for optimal economic policy can be derived. The study formulates general guidelines for long-run economic and educational policy, given the available demographic projections. Two main conclusions are reached. First, a fall in fertility has a beneficial effect on consumption per capita, provided that the population growth rate does not pass below a certain (probably negative) critical level. Second, investment in education is a good substitute for population growth: when the population growth rate falls, investment in education becomes more attractive

Abstract: The recent experience of industrialized countries with low fer tility and persistent immigration has stimulated interest in the eco nomic effects of population change in industrial countries and has led to new research in population economics. In Germany, however, where these demographic trends were perhaps most pronounced, research on po pulation economics has lagged. During recent years more German econo mists have also turned to this topic. This upsurge in research activity motivated the organisation of an international conference entitled "Economic Consequences of Population Change in Industrialized Coun tries", which was held from June 1 to June 3, 1983 at the University of Paderborn, W. Germany. The conference was designed to discuss and assess the new theoretical and empirical research work on the effects of population change on the economy, to intensify the international cooperation and to stimulate the research in population economics in W. Germany. This volume contains 23 revised versions of the 27 papers pre sented at the conference. Although the topics of the papers are di verse, they can be grouped into six general themes: The first section, including papers by Cigno, Steinmann, and Simon, deals with models of the secular interrelationships between population change, technical progress and economic growth. The models are built upon the framework of neoclassical growth theory and are extended by the assumption that the rate of technical progress is positively linked with population growth or population density.
