The volume explores the contribution of non-state actors to a sustainable transition, starting with citizens and communities of different kinds and ending with cities and city-networks.     Abstract: This book elucidates why human rights still matter in contemporary global affairs, and what can lead to better protection of international human rights in a post-liberal order.It blends theoretical, empirical, and normative perspectives, while providing much-needed analysis in light of the perils of populism, authoritarianism, and toxic nationalism, as well as highlighting the hopes with which people around the world view human rights in the new millennium. Systematically combining theoretical perspectives from across the disciplines with numerous case studies, it demonstrates not only the complexities of the domestic conditions involved, but also the ways in which human dignity can be preserved and promoted during periods of rapid change and uncertainty. Finally, the book addresses the question of how to protect human rights in such a world in which the active promotion of democratic values and enforcement of human rights may not be necessarily aligned with evolving economic and geopolitical interests of many great and diverse powers on the global scene. As such, it is a timely intervention for human rights as a concept as it has been attacked and eroded by the instability in our world today.

Time and Temporality in Transitional and Post-Conflict Societies examines how time is experienced, constructed and used in transitional and post-conflict societies. This collection critically questions linear, transitional justice time and highlights the different temporalities that exist at local and institutional levels through original empirical research.     Abstract: This study is the first to analyse the manifold interrelations between armed conflicts and the human and natural environments both historically and sociologically. While most research to date has dealt with this topic primarily with regard to environmental destruction caused by acts of war or armament in peacetime, this publication goes one step further by highlighting the historical changes to this complex interrelationship with concrete examples: from the Second World War in Europe and Asia via the classic proxy war in Vietnam to the current asymmetric wars in South Asia. At the same time, it focuses on systematic questions: How do environments influence armed conflicts? How do wars change environments?     Abstract: "The international criminal justice system is an important element of world politics of today. Currently, the International Criminal Court (ICC) is investigating serious human rights violations committed in nine African states, and has launched preliminary investigations into acts committed in the conflict zones of Palestine and Ukraine. The complexity of these issues and the ongoing status of these conflicts pose significant difficulties for international courts in carrying out their mandates, which in turn affect the Prosecution and the Defence. The media, as well as academia, tend to focus on the Office of the Prosecutor of the ICC (as was the case with the ICTY and ICTR). Rarely is the focus widened to include the role of the accused and their defence teams.     Abstract: In den letzten Jahrzehnten sind in Lateinamerika die vermehrte rechtliche Anerkennung und eine politische Bedeutungszunahme indigener Völker zu beobachten. Die neue Verfassung Boliviens, geprägt durch die UN-Deklaration über Rechte indigener Völker (2007), nimmt diesbezüglich eine weltweite Vorreiterrolle ein. Im verfassunggebenden Prozess stand nicht nur die Anerkennung von kultureller Diversität zur Diskussion, sondern die Suche nach neuen Staats- und Entwicklungsmodellen. Die neue Verfassung soll nun einen rechtlich-politischen Dekolonisierungsprozess einleiten. Sie bietet die Basis für die Schaffung von einem plurinationalen und interkulturellen Staat sowie für ein Regime des „Guten Lebens“. Die ambitionierten Reformprozesse rufen jedoch starke Konflikte hervor und stoßen auf Einschränkungen bezüglich ihrer Umsetzbarkeit. Die differenzierten Analysen der Aushandlungsprozesse und der Interessen und Strategien der AkteurInnen im verfassunggebenden Prozess Boliviens bieten einen Einblick in bestehende Konfliktpotentiale und Spannungsfelder zwischen utopischen Diskursen und sozialen Praktiken sowie schwer überwindbare asymmetrische Beziehungen.
