    Abstract: In der Modewelt und der Popkultur begegnen einem überraschend oft religiöse Symbole, seien es Kreuze auf T-Shirts, Buddha-Figuren auf Handtaschen oder die indische Göttin Kali auf Badeanzügen: Religion auf populärer Kleidung scheint „in Mode“ zu sein. Doch was haben solche Symbole noch mit Religion zu tun? Die Studie entwirft einen religionswissenschaftlichen Zugang zu dieser Rezeption religiöser Symbole in populärkultureller Kleidung, erklärt die komplexen Verbindungen zwischen Religion und Populärkultur und erprobt diese vorgeschlagene Herangehensweise an einer Untersuchung zu Kleidung in der Schweizer Black Metal-Szene.
    Abstract: In fashion and pop culture, one encounters religious symbols surprisingly often, be it crosses on T-shirts, depictions of Buddha on handbags or the colourful goddess Kali on swimsuits. ‘Religion’ on clothing seems to be ‘in vogue’. This book conducts a study of the reception of religious symbols in the field of popular clothing from the perspective of religious studies and tests this approach in an examination of clothing practices in the Swiss black metal scene.

    Abstract: "Im islamischen Recht finden sich viele Ansätze zu sozial- und wirtschaftsethischen Fragen. Das bekannteste Beispiel hierfür sind die zakāt-Pflichtabgabe auf Geld- und Sachvermögen sowie das ribā-Verbot, das allgemeinhin als Zinsverbot interpretiert und übersetzt wird. Erst eine Auseinandersetzung mit den Grundfragen des Geldes ermöglicht es aber, das Wirtschaftsdenken im islamischen Recht vom Grund her zu erschließen. Der vorliegende Band befasst sich mit den Fragen nach dem Geld, seinen morphologischen Charakteristika, seiner gesellschafts- und marktbezogenen Relevanz sowie seiner vertragstypologischen Einordnung. Mit diesem Anliegen lenkt der Autor die Perspektive auf ein Thema, das in der gegenwärtigen Debatte um „islamisch-ökonomische“ Vorstellungen relativ wenig wissenschaftliche Beachtung gefunden hat, und stellt zugleich die Weichen für ein neues Verständnis der gesamten „islamischen Wirtschaftstheorie“. Seine konzeptionellen Ausführungen zu den Grundfragen des Geldes basieren auf zahlreichen Primärquellen, die im binnendisziplinären Vergleich und mithilfe der Ansätze der neoklassischen Ökonomie untersucht wurden.     Abstract: "Guided by awareness of the problematic relationship between polemical text and history, Opponents and Identity in Philippians seeks to establish a historical context for the letter to the Philippians. The study re-evaluates the relationship between Paul and the Jerusalem-based Christ-believing community from the time of the Jerusalem meeting and the Antioch incident. A more detailed analysis centers on how this relationship is reflected in Philippians. The book argues that Paul was continuously on problematic terms with the Jerusalem community, which means that they are the Jewish Christ-believing opponents referred to at several places in Philippians as well. With the help of the social identity approach (SIA), the book illustrates how Paul engages in identity formation through polemical rhetoric in his last letter"--

    Abstract: In The Authority of Law in the Hebrew Bible and Early Judaism, Vroom identifies a development in the authority of written law that took place in early Judaism. Ever since Assyriologists began to recognize that the Mesopotamian law collections did not function as law codes do today-as a source of binding obligation-scholars have grappled with the question of when the Pentateuchal legal corpora came to be treated as legally binding. Vroom draws from legal theory to provide a theoretical framework for understanding the nature of legal authority, and develops a methodology for identifying instances in which legal texts were treated as binding law by ancient interpreters. This method is applied to a selection of legal-interpretive texts: Ezra-Nehemiah, Temple Scroll, the Qumran rule texts, and the Samaritan Pentateuch

    Abstract: In Mandarins and Heretics , Wu Junqing explores the denunciation and persecution of lay religious groups in late imperial (14th to 20th century) China. These groups varied greatly in their organisation and teaching, yet in official state records they are routinely portrayed as belonging to the same esoteric tradition, stigmatised under generic labels such as “White Lotus” and “evil teaching”, and accused of black magic, sedition and messianic agitation. Wu Junqing convincingly demonstrates that this “heresy construct” was not a reflection of historical reality but a product of the Chinese historiographical tradition, with its uncritical reliance on official sources. The imperial heresy construct remains influential in modern China, where it contributes to shaping policy towards unlicensed religious groups

In presenting Sokdokpa's career and legacy, Gentry traces the theme of power objects across a wide spectrum of genres to show how Tibetan Buddhists themselves have theorized about objects of power and implemented them in practice.     Abstract: "The Scientification of the "Jewish Question" under National Socialism describes the attempt of a considerable number of German scholars to counter the vanishing influence of religious prejudices against the Jews with a new antisemitic rationale. As anti-Jewish stereotypes of an old-fashioned soteriological kind had become dysfunctional under the pressure of secularization, a new, more objective explanation was needed to justify the age-old danger of Judaism in the present. In the 1930s a new research field called "Judenforschung" (Jew research) emerged. Its leading figures amalgamated racial and religious features to verify the existence of an everlasting "Jewish problem". Along with that they offered scholarly concepts for its solution"--

    Abstract: In Organizing Muslims and Integrating Islam in Germany , Kerstin Rosenow-Williams analyzes the challenges faced by Islamic organizations in Germany since the beginning of the 21st century. Outlining the expectations German political actors have of Islamic organizations and the internal interests of these organizations, the author illustrates that organizational response strategies involve patterns not only of adaptation, but also of decoupling and protest. The study introduces an innovative research framework based on organizational sociology and provides empirical insights into three major Islamic umbrella organizations (DITIB, IGMG, ZMD) and their relationships with other actors. The comprehensive analysis of the German institutional environment and related developments in Islamic organizations makes this study highly relevant to scholars and politicians, as well as the general public

    Abstract: In vielen Bürgerkriegen wirken Religionen gewalteskalierend. Sie grenzen Andersgläubige voneinander ab und erhöhen ihre Kampfbereitschaft. In anderen Konflikten spielen Religionen keine Rolle oder wirken sogar friedensfördernd. Warum tragen Religionen in manchen Kriegen zur Eskalation bei und in anderen nicht? Anhand einer vergleichenden Analyse aktueller Bürgerkriege zeigt die Arbeit, dass Bündnisse politischer und religiöser Eliten entscheidend sind. Wenn solche Allianzen entstehen, steigt die Gefahr religiöser Konflikteskalationen: Politische Eliten organisieren den bewaffneten Kampf, Geistliche überzeugen die Menschen, dass die Gewalt religiös geboten ist. Solche Bündnisse entstehen, wenn die Kooperationspartner überzeugt sind, dass sie von der Allianz profitieren können. Die Studie zeigt, dass diese Kooperationsbereitschaft maßgeblich auf innerreligiösen Konkurrenzsituationen und der inneren Verfasstheit religiöser Gemeinschaften beruhen. Wie Religionen in Konflikten nach außen wirken, hängt davon ab, wie sie nach innen organisiert sind

    Abstract: The development of Early Christian rituals in connection with death and burial has so far not sufficiently been explored. Volp’s study focuses on the surviving literary sources—both pagan and Christian—, together with inscriptions and other archaeological remains while taking into account recent results from science and humanities. A summary of death and ritual in the ancient Mediterranean religions is followed by detailed analyses of the Christian sources from the 2nd to the 5th century. Thus, basic developments are being discovered which led to and accompanied the forming of Christian rituals, such as ritual purity or the social structure of family and society. Being the first such interdisciplinary approach, it also represents the first monographic work on the topic since 1941

    Abstract: The common charge laid against missionaries that they are destroyers of African culture is shown to be untrue of the missionaries treated in this book, who worked with considerable success to integrate Christianity and African culture. The author examines the endeavours of the missionaries from the perspective of the local Christians, who were not themselves interested in Africanization as such. One can thus find some missionaries defending - against the elected African Church leadership - the right of the Chagga Christians to circumcise their daughters, and Nyakyusa Christians refusing to use African tunes because the missionaries - influenced by National Socialism - professed both love for African culture and White superiority. This informative book, based on local and archival research at Daressalam University, is eminently readable. It features the first historical study of Bruno Gutmann, and provides case study material for teaching.
