    Abstract: Malešević offers a novel sociological answer to the age-old question: 'Why do humans fight?'. Instead of focusing on the motivations of solitary individuals, he emphasises the centrality of the social and historical contexts that make fighting possible. He argues that fighting is not an individual attribute, but a social phenomenon shaped by one's relationships with other people. Drawing on recent scholarship across a variety of academic disciplines as well as his own interviews with the former combatants, Malešević shows that one's willingness to fight is a contextual phenomenon shaped by specific ideological and organisational logic. This book explores the role biology, psychology, economics, ideology, and coercion play in one's experience of fighting, emphasising the cultural and historical variability of combativeness. By drawing from numerous historical and contemporary examples from all over the world, Malešević demonstrates how social pugnacity is a relational and contextual phenomenon that possesses autonomous features.

    Abstract: Understanding how cultural diversity relates to international order is an urgent contemporary challenge. Building on ideas first advanced in Reus-Smit's On Cultural Diversity (2018), this book advances a new framework for understanding the nexus between culture and order in world politics. Through a pioneering interdisciplinary collaboration between leading historians, international lawyers, sociologists, and international relations scholars, it argues that cultural diversity in social life is ubiquitous rather than exceptional, and demonstrates that the organization of cultural diversity has been inextricably tied to the constitution and legitimation of political authority in diverse international orders, from Warring States China, through early-Modern Europe and the Ottoman and Qing Empires, to today's global liberal order. It highlights the successive 'diversity regimes' that have been constructed to govern cultural difference since the nineteenth century, traces the exclusions and resistances these projects have engendered, and considers contemporary global vulnerabilities and axes of contestation.

    Abstract: „Kultur, Raum und Zeit“ ist der Versuch, eine vergleichende Kulturtheorie zu schreiben, die auf umfassenden kulturellen Zusammenhängen beruht und sich nicht allein auf empirische Erhebungen verlässt. Es entwickelt den Kulturbegriff dort, wo er entsteht, auf dem Niveau der Einzelperson. Der Bezug zur Lebenswelt und zur Kultur früherer Generationen wird als Grundlage von Kulturentwicklung verstanden. Die entsprechende Wahrnehmung wird dabei zum zentralen Faktor der Entstehung von Kultur. Raum und Zeit werden so zu Schlüsselelementen in diesem Prozess. Kultur, Raum und Zeit ist die einzige Kulturtheorie, die sowohl auf empirischen Erfahrungen wie auch auf theoretischen Überlegungen basiert, die der Autor in jahrzehntelangen Aufenthalten im asiatischen Raum entwickelt hat. Beginnend in Beijing im Jahre 1978 als Student hat er die Öffnung Chinas miterlebt, war in den achtziger Jahren sechs Jahre in Japan, dann in Beijing, Shanghai und Hong Kong als schweizerischer Diplomat tätig und hat 2016 seine Karriere als Asienberater am Geneva Center for Security Policy beendet.
    Abstract: ‘Kultur, Raum und Zeit’ is an attempt to develop a comparative theory of culture relying on a comprehensive understanding of this phenomenon. It is the only model so far which integrates empirical and theoretical aspects in order to describe interrelations between different factors which form culture. The challenge of a given natural and social environment with which a person and earlier generations are confronted provides the basis for a new definition of culture. It sees perception as a key element in the process of developing culture. In this way, time and space become essential factors, hence the title ‘Culture, Space and Time’. ‘Culture, Space and Time’ is the only cultural model which successfully integrates empirical experiences and theoretical analysis into a comprehensive model for cultural comparisons. It is based on the author’s diplomatic career in Japan and China, which started with his time as a student in Beijing in 1978 and ended with his work as an Asian advisor to the Geneva Center for Security Policy GCSP in 2016.

    Abstract: In 1936, Nazi Germany and militarist Japan built a partnership which culminated in the Tokyo-Berlin Axis. This study of interwar German-Japanese relations is the first to employ sources in both languages. Transnational Nazism was an ideological and cultural outlook that attracted non-Germans to become adherents of Hitler and National Socialism, and convinced German Nazis to identify with certain non-Aryans. Because of the distance between Germany and Japan, mass media was instrumental in shaping mutual perceptions and spreading transnational Nazism. This work surveys the two national media to examine the impact of transnational Nazism. When Hitler and the Nazi movement gained prominence, Japanese newspapers, lectures and pamphlets, nonfiction, and language textbooks transformed to promote the man and his party. Meanwhile, the ascendancy of Hitler and his regime created a niche for Japan in the Nazi worldview and Nazified newspapers, films, nonfiction, and voluntary associations.

    Abstract: Outline of a Theory of Practice is recognized as a major theoretical text on the foundations of anthropology and sociology. Pierre Bourdieu, a distinguished French anthropologist, develops a theory of practice which is simultaneously a critique of the methods and postures of social science and a general account of how human action should be understood. With his central concept of the habitus, the principle which negotiates between objective structures and practices, Bourdieu is able to transcend the dichotomies which have shaped theoretical thinking about the social world. The author draws on his fieldwork in Kabylia (Algeria) to illustrate his theoretical propositions. With detailed study of matrimonial strategies and the role of rite and myth, he analyses the dialectical process of the 'incorporation of structures' and the objectification of habitus, whereby social formations tend to reproduce themselves.     Abstract: Das Ausbilden einer eigenen Identität ist ein lebenslanger Prozess. Jedes Individuum strebt danach, individuelle Merkmale auszuprägen, um sich von anderen abzugrenzen. Die vorliegende Dissertation analysiert das Integrationsverhalten chinesischer Zuwanderer in Berlin anhand einer Fallstudie, die interessante Erkenntnisse bringt: Die Zuwanderer fühlen die Notwendigkeit, ihre chinesische Identität zu rekonstruieren – allerdings mit dem Ziel, sich damit in Deutschland besser zu integrieren. Dies führt oft zu Konflikten innerhalb von Familien.
    Abstract: Developing one’s own identity is a lifelong process, and every individual endeavours to develop unique characteristics in order to differentiate themselves from others. Using a case study, this dissertation analyses how Chinese migrants in Berlin are integrating into German society and reveals some interesting findings: the migrants feel the need to reconstruct their Chinese identity in order to integrate better, and this often leads to conflicts between family members.

    Abstract: Die Volksrepublik China entwickelte sich zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts zu einer weltweit führenden Wirtschaftsmacht. Die so entstandene globale Mobilität führte zu einem soziokulturellen Wandel innerhalb des Landes. Kommunikation, Kultur und Werte sind in diesem Prozess eng miteinander verbunden. Thomas Herdin setzt sich in seiner Habilitationsschrift für eine dynamische Werteauffassung ein. Die Grundlage von Kultur ist für ihn nicht an Territorien festzumachen, sondern an gemeinsamen Werten, Lebensformen und Deutungsmustern. Diese unterliegen einem ständigen Wandel und stellen somit keine feststehenden Einheiten dar. Kulturelle Gegensätze seien vereinbar wie bei dem taoistischen Yin-Yang-Symbol. Am Beispiel Chinas möchte er die klassische Denkweise, eine Gesellschaft sei entweder kollektivistisch oder individualistisch, durch das "Sowohl-als-auch-Schema" aufbrechen. Dabei will er eine westliche Verzerrung verhindern, indem er auch chinesische Ansätze und Modelle der Kommunikationswissenschaften miteinbezieht. Herdin beschreibt in seinem Werk verschiedene Deutungsmuster transkultureller Phänomene wie zum Beispiel das Lächeln. So wird dieses unter europäisch Sozialisierten meist als ein Ausdruck von Freude verstanden, in China werde allerdings auch in anderen Situationen, etwa bei Trauer, gelächelt. Im empirischen Teil seines Buches analysiert Herdin aktuelle Wertehaltungen und kulturelle Transformationsprozesse in China. Grundlage hierfür bilden Aussagen leitender Angestellter sowie Studierender in Peking und Shanghai. Es ist Herdin ein Anliegen, den Eurozentrismus in Frage zu stellen und das westliche Wissenschaftsverständnis kritisch zu reflektieren. (ifa)

Human Rights in Thick and Thin Societies uncovers the original intentions of the drafters of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, finds inspiration from early leaders in the field like Eleanor Roosevelt, and examines the implications of recent advances in cultural psychology for understanding difference. The case studies included illustrate the need to vary the application of human rights in differing cultural environments, and the book suggests a new framework: a flexible universalism that returns to basics-focusing on the great evils of the human condition. This approach will help the human rights movement succeed in a multipolar era.

    Abstract: Zum ersten Mal liegt hier eine explizite Analyse politischer Arbeit vor. Jenseits von Politikverständnissen, die sich vornehmlich an Machtprozessen bzw. Jener Qualität also, die Ideen derart mit Bedeutung auflädt, dass sie Massen mobilisieren und Gruppen hinter sich scharen – unsere Sicht auf die Welt also ein Stück weit verändern.     Abstract: Das Ziel der Studie ist es, die Lebenssituation der Kinder mit Migrationshintergrund zu analysieren und zu zeigen, welche Besonderheiten und Bedürfnisse sie in Bezug auf Freundschaften zu Einheimischen und Schulleistungen haben – mit der Intention, insbesondere benachteiligte Kinder besser fördern zu können, um die bestehenden sozialen Ungleichheiten zumindest zum Teil abbauen zu können.In der Arbeit werden strukturelle Voraussetzungen und bildungsbezogene Folgen von Freundschaften zwischen Schülern mit und ohne Migrationshintergrund untersucht. Dabei liegt das besondere Augenmerk auf Schulklassen und Vereinen als Strukturen, die einheimische und Migrantenkinder zusammenbringen und Freunde werden lassen können. Es wird geprüft, inwiefern Freundschaften zu Schulleistungen von Kindern beitragen und ob die migrationsspezifische und sozioökonomische Situation der Freunde dabei eine Rolle spielt

    Abstract: In the United States of America today, debates among, between, and within Indian nations continue to focus on how to determine and define the boundaries of Indian ethnic identity and tribal citizenship. From the 1880s and into the 1930s, many Native people participated in similar debates as they confronted white cultural expectations regarding what it meant to be an Indian in modern American society. Using close readings of texts, images, and public performances, this book examines the literary output of four influential American Indian intellectuals who challenged long-held conceptions of Indian identity at the turn of the twentieth century. Kiara M. Vigil traces how the narrative discourses created by these figures spurred wider discussions about citizenship, race, and modernity in the United States. Vigil demonstrates how these figures deployed aspects of Native American cultural practice to authenticate their status both as indigenous peoples and as citizens of the United States.

    Abstract: Liberaler Multikulturalismus ist Resultat von Anerkennung von Freiheiten, die dem einzelnen zustehen, der sich dann in einem zweiten Schritt eine kulturelle Identität gibt. Dieser Text geht von der gegensätzlichen Prämisse aus, dass Identitäten nur im Kontext einer von Individuen akzeptierten Kultur gebildet werden können und dass diese Kultur nicht das Objekt freier Wahl ist, sondern dass ihr ein Moment der Verbindlichkeit angehört. Der Kapitalismus ist die einzige politische Form, die mit dem traditionellen Kulturbegriff bricht und ihn zu entpolitisieren sucht. Am Beispiel der afro-amerikanischen Minderheit und den Immigrantenkulturen in Europa wird gezeigt, dass dieser Versuch sich in Widersprüche verstrickt. Der Text untersucht die Entstehung des europäischen Imperialismus geistesgeschichtlich und plädiert für einen Kompromiss mit den etablierten religiösen Kräften, die eine Möglichkeit von nicht-kapitalistischer Existenz im kulturellen Gedächtnis verankert haben.
    Abstract: Multiculturalism, identity politics, race – these are keywords of our contemporary political situation. This text argues that a politics that addresses these concepts must start from the premise that liberal modernity represents a rupture with all forms of community developed by the species until the modern era. Thinking this politics means placing the individual again into the cultural situation whose integrity has been the object of attack by liberals ever since. It involves acknowledging our dependence on traditions legitimated by a view of man as not as autonomous maker of the world according to principles of reason but as the result of an acceptance of religious transcendence acting in the world.

    Abstract: A Historiography of the Modern Social Sciences includes essays on the ways in which the histories of psychology, anthropology, sociology, economics, history and political science have been written since the Second World War. Bringing together chapters written by the leading historians of each discipline, the book establishes significant parallels and contrasts and makes the case for a comparative interdisciplinary historiography. This comparative approach helps explain historiographical developments on the basis of factors specific to individual disciplines and the social, political, and intellectual developments that go beyond individual disciplines. All historians, including historians of the different social sciences, encounter literatures with which they are not familiar. This book will provide a broader understanding of the different ways in which the history of the social sciences, and by extension intellectual history, is written

This volume traces the Jewish encounter with Greek culture from the earliest points of contact in antiquity to the end of the Byzantine Empire. It honors Nicholas de Lange, whose distinguished work brought recognition to an undeservedly neglected field, in part by dispelling the common belief that Jewish-Greek culture largely disappeared after 100 CE. Evening's Empire is a fascinating study of the myriad ways in which early modern people understood, experienced, and transformed the night. Using diaries, letters, and legal records together with representations of the night in early modern religion, literature and art, Craig Koslofsky opens up an entirely new perspective on early modern Europe. He shows how princes, courtiers, burghers and common people 'nocturnalized' political expression, the public sphere and the use of daily time. Fear of the night was now mingled with improved opportunities for labour and leisure: the modern night was beginning to assume its characteristic shape.     Abstract: This collection of essays examines the ways in which disputes and controversies about the application of scientific knowledge are resolved. Four concrete examples of public controversy are considered in detail: the efficacy of Laetrile, the classification of homosexuality as a disease, the setting of safety standards in the workplace, and the utility of nuclear energy as a source of power. The essays in this volume show that debates about these cases are not confined to matters of empirical fact. Rather, as is seen with most scientific and technical controversies, they focus on and are structured by complex ethical, economic, and political interests. Drs. Engelhardt and Caplan have brought together a distinguished group of scholars from the sciences and humanities, who sketch a theory of scientific controversy and attempt to provide recommendations about the ways in which both scientists and the public ought to seek more informed resolutions of highly contentious issues in science and technology. Runciman presents an original and wide-ranging account of the fundamental process by which human cultures and societies come to be of the different kinds that they are. Drawing on and extending recent advances in neo-Darwinian evolutionary theory, Runciman argues that collective human behaviour should be analyzed as the acting-out of information transmitted at the three separate but interacting levels of heritable variation and competitive selection - the biological, the cultural, and the social. Welche Formen der sozialen Koordination werden durch das Vordringen des Marktmechanismus im Bildungssystem verdrängt? Welche Akteure sind an der Finanzierung und Bereitstellung von Bildungsleistungen beteiligt? Wie verändert sich im Zuge der Ökonomisierung der wichtigste Bildungsproduzent: der Bildungsstaat? Obwohl der Bildungsstaat die Verteilung von Lebenschancen und die soziale Ungleichheit entscheidend mitbestimmt, wird die Frage nach der Organisation der Bildungsproduktion in Deutschland traditionell nicht als sozialpolitische Frage thematisiert. Ein Defizit, das überwunden werden muss. Vor dem Hintergrund dieser Tendenzen und der „kulturellen Wende“, welche verschiedene Fachdisziplinen in jüngster Zeit durchlaufen haben, stellen sich zehn renommierte Wissenschaftler aus der Sicht von sieben Fachdisziplinen der seit Max Weber immer wieder thematisierten Fragen nach dem Zusammenhang von Kultur und Entwicklung und versuchen, diese aus der Kenntnis heutiger Problemlagen zu beantworten.     Abstract: The American sociologist Talcott Parsons was often accused of being an overly abstract, even apolitical thinker, remote in Harvard's ivory tower. The controversial Parsons, in fact, emulated his mentor, the venerable Max Weber, in at least two respects: as a scholar he practised Wertfreiheit (scientific professionalism) and as a political activist he worked for the preservation and expansion of democracy. In this text, Uta Gerhardt traces this double commitment and links Parsons's scholarship to his politics. Utilizing rich archival material, she examines four periods in Parsons's intellectual life in the context of American history and society. From the New Deal and the rise of German fascism to the Second World War, through the McCarthy era and the Civil Rights movement, Parsons's overriding agenda was to develop both a sociological understanding and a defense of the development of modern democracy.

    Abstract: The efforts of fascism to form a 'culture of consent,' or shape depoliticized activities, in Italy between the world wars, make a unique portrait of fascist political tactics. Professor de Grazia focuses on the dopolavoro or fascist leisure-time organization, the largest of the regime's mass institutions. She traces its gradual rise in importance for the consolidation of fascist rule; its spread in the form of thousands of local clubs into every domain of urban and rural life; and its overwhelming impact on the distribution, consumption, and character of all kinds of recreational pursuits - from sports and adult education to movies, traveling theaters, radio, and tourism. The author shows how fascism was able, between 1926 and 1939, to build a new definition of the public sphere. Recasting the public sphere entailed dispensing with traditional class and politically defined modes of organizing those social roles and desires existing outside the workplace
