    Abstract: "The demise of the Soviet Union in 1991 resulted in new state-led nation-building projects in Central Asia. The emergence of independent republics spawned a renewed Western scholarly interest in the region's nationality issues. Presenting a detailed study, this book examines the state-led nation-building projects in the Soviet republics of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Exploring the degree, forms and ways of the Soviet state involvement in creating Kazakh and Uzbek nations, this book places the discussion within the theoretical literature on nationalism. The author argues that both Kazakh and Uzbek nations are artificial constructs of Moscow-based Soviet policy-makers of the 1920s and 1930s. This book challenges existing arguments in current scholarship by bringing some new and alternative insights into the role of indigenous Central Asian and Soviet officials in these nation-building projects. It goes on to critically examine post-Soviet official Kazakh and Uzbek historiographies, according to which Kazakh and Uzbek peoples had developed national collective identities and loyalties long before the Soviet era.     Abstract: "Sri Lanka's conflict and peace processes have gained global attention during recent years. This book presents a comprehensive insight into the politics of reconstruction and development in Sri Lanka, focussing on the ceasefire which was negotiated between the Government of Sri Lanka and the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in 2002 and which lasted until 2006. Based on extensive empirical fieldwork, the book provides a unique ethnographic account of this specific historical period of peace. It explains how development was shaped by interplay and cooperation, but also by the disparities and conflicts between a variety of local and intervening actors, including local organizations and civil society, LTTE, Government of Sri Lanka, international development cooperation and the Tamil diaspora. Starting from an interdisciplinary viewpoint, the author integrates findings from development sociology with new perspectives on transnationalization and the migration-development-nexus. This provides a fine grained analysis of the emerging development visions and perspectives in relation to transnationalization and global interconnectedness.     Abstract: Spätestens seit der Lehre vom Naturzustand, die Thomas Hobbes auf so folgenreiche Weise ausgearbeitet hat, steht die Todesproblematik im Zentrum der politischen Philosophie. Denn unter der Bedingung einer geringeren Eindämmung durch Jenseitsfiktionen erscheint die Absolutheit des Todes nicht nur als eine angstbesetzte Bedrohung, sondern zugleich auch als das, was die politische Ordnung aufrecht erhält. Mit der Fundierung der Gemeinschaft in einer Todesdrohung, die alle angeht, taucht jedoch zugleich eine neue Problematik auf: die Zersetzung der Gemeinschaft, der wiederum allein durch den Horizont einer kollektiven Todesdrohung entgegengewirkt werden kann. Ausgehend von dieser Problematik, zeichnet die Studie von Leander Scholz am Leitfaden politischer Thanatologien den historischen Umbau von einer politischen Theologie zur politischen Ökonomie nach, sowie die Umformung der politischen Ökonomie zu einer politischen Ökologie. Hierbei steht die Formierung eines Lebenswillens im Vordergrund, der nicht mehr bereit ist, die Verinnerlichung der Todesdrohung als Horizont seiner Selbstbehauptung anzuerkennen.

    Abstract: Social Activism in Southeast Asia examines the ways in which social movements operate in a region characterized by a history of authoritarian regimes and relatively weak civil society. It situates cutting-edge accounts of activism around civil and political rights, globalization, peace, the environment, migrant and factory labour, the rights of middle- and working-class women, and sexual identity in an overarching framework of analysis that forefronts the importance of human rights and the state as a focus for social activism. Drawing on contemporary evidence from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Timor-Leste, the book explores the ways in which social movement actors engage with their international allies, the community and the state in order to promote social change. As well as providing detailed and nuanced analyses of particular movements in specific areas of Southeast Asia, the book addresses difficult questions about the politics, strategies and authenticity of social movements.

Veena Das examines case studies including the extreme violence of the Partition of India in 1947 and the massacre of Sikhs in 1984 after the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
