    Abstract: Knowledge and Discourse presents an ecological approach to the study of discourse in social, academic and professional practices. It brings together distinguished scholars from diverse cultures - India, China, Australia, Canada among others - and disciplines - linguistics, anthropology, sociology, philosophy. The chapters collectively illustrate the ecological approach by exploring how language makes connections between subjective experiences as people construct meaning and action. This book offers the reader a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to the study of language as discourse, questioning traditional views of disciplinary knowledge and the role of discourse in the pursuit, construction and compartmentalisation of such knowledge. Through the variety of disciplines, experiences and approaches, the contributors show how the world and word are contingent on each other. The notions of connectivity, contingency and change are themes that run through the book, and in the interweaving of these themes readers will find persuasive illustrations of an ecological approach to applied linguistics.

    Abstract: Drink, as an embodied semiotic and material form, mediates social life. This book examines the fundamental nature of drink through a series of modular but connected ethnographic discussions. It looks at the way the materiality of a specific drink (coffee, wine, water, beer) serves as the semiotic medium for a genre of sociability in a specific time and place. As an explicitly comparative semiotic study, the book uses familiar and unfamiliar case studies to show how drinks with similar material properties are semiotically organized into very different drinking practices, including ethnographic examples as diverse as the relation of coffee to talk (in ordering at Starbucks). Further chapters look at the dryness of gin in relation to the modern cocktail party and the embedding of beer brands in the ethnographic imagination of the nation. Rather than treat drinks as mere propos in the exclusively human drama of the social, the book promotes them to actors on the stage.

    Abstract: Conclusions highlight the ways in which the use of language in interactions provides important cues for analyzing the cultural presuppositions of CISV activities, through both empowering dialogues and disempowering monologues. The analysis of interactions and participants' narratives shows both (1) dyadic hierarchical interactions associated with conflict avoidance, normative conflict resolution and instrumental translation, and (2) dialogic empowering relationships based on specific dialogic actions supporting and confirming active participation, such as promotional questions, continuers, echoes, systematic appreciations, transformative formulations, and suggestive narratives. In the activities analysed, promotion of agency and personal expressions, through coordination and dialogic mediation, seems to be more important than insistence on intercultural relationships, and improvements in this promotion seems to be crucial for education to peace in intercultural settings.

    Abstract: My aim in this article is to examine two types of discourse features, through a semantic analysis of the occurrences of the word university in the Preamble to the Magna Charta Universitatum of Bologna. I will firstly look at extra-linguistic phenomena, in particular the discursive elaboration of the identity of European society, and then focus on linguistic elements, which involve rebuilding the lexical meaning in and by discursive mechanisms.This last aspect is examined through an argumentative approach, namely the Semantics of Argumentative Potentials (SAP). The form of SAP proposed is a holistic, associative and encyclopedic approach to lexical meaning capable of explaining both the "perceived" and "modeled" representations of the world created by language and the discursive potential of words (i.e. the argumentative sequences that they authorize). This approach can also be used to explain the "stable" and evolutionary parts of meaning (stereotypes).

    Abstract: How and why is silence used interculturally? Approaching the phenomenon of silence from multiple perspectives, this book shows how silence is used, perceived and at times misinterpreted in intercultural communication.     Abstract: Research in the relatively new field of cultural linguistics has implications for second language learning and intercultural communication. This volume is the first of its kind to bring together studies that examine the implications for applied programs of research in these domains. Collectively, the contributions explore the interrelationship between language, culture, and conceptualisations. Each study focuses on a different language-and-culture. The languages-cultures studied include Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, Persian, English, Aboriginal English and African English. The particular conceptual bases of the contributions range from theories of embodiment and conceptual metaphors to theories of schemas and cultural scripts.     Abstract: Winner of ABC's award for Distinguished Publication for 2006This book explores effective written communication across cultures both theoretically and practically. Specifically it conceptualizes cross-cultural genre study and compares English and Chinese business writing collected from Australia, New Zealand and China. It is also one of those inspired by contrastive rhetoric but has contributed innovatively and uniquely by incorporating research findings from genre analysis, in particular, the sociocognitive genre perspective into this cross-cultural study. On the one hand, the endeavor represents an in-depth theoretical exploration by considering not only discourse community and cognitive structuring, but also the deep semantics of genre and intertextuality, while broadening genre study by integrating insights from cross-cultural communication as well as the Chinese perspectives. On the other hand, the book also addresses pragmatic issues. As a particular feature, it solicits professional members' intercultural viewpoints; thus confirming the shared social "stock of knowledge" employed in the culturally defined writing conventions.Last but not least, this book explores the implications for genre education and training, and develops an appropriate model for cross-cultural genre learning, which encourages learning through legitimate peripheral participation and intercultural learning in business organizations.

    Abstract: This book considers the discourses that come into play in organizational change. The book outlines the tensions that arise for people having to enact change, and analyzes the ways in which they position themselves in changing organizational environments. The book takes a social semiotic perspective on discourse, organization and change. Here, discourse encompasses not only the multi-modal resources that people mobilize in organizational (inter)action, but also the practices and transformative dynamics afforded by those resources. The organizational changes highlighted in the book revolve around three dimensions of work that are increasingly coming to the fore: participation, boundary-spanning and knowledging. These dimensions are explored through case studies, including a health planning project, an initiative to standardize work practices, and the tension between paper-based and IT-based reporting. The book addresses the relevance of this discourse perspective to organizational research more broadly, by investigating organization as a dynamic of 'resemiotizations'.Cover illustration by John Reid.

Gumperz' approach to intercultural communication and Brown/Levinson's theory of politeness supply the theoretical framework for the study. The two-sided concept of 'face' - distancing (negative face) and rapprochement (positive face) - points up cultural differences. Germans attach great importance to privacy and individuality, while Arabs prefer in-group relations.

    Abstract: What is an organization? What are the building blocks that ultimately constitute this social form, so pervasive in our daily life? Like Augustine facing the problem of time, we all know what an organization is, but we seem unable to explain it. This book brings an original answer by mobilizing concepts traditionally reserved to linguistics, analytical philosophy, and semiotics. Based on Algirdas Julien Greimas' semio-narrative model of action and Jacques Derrida's concept of écriture, a reconceptualization of speech act theory is proposed in which communication is treated as an act of delegation where human and nonhuman agents are mobilized (texts, machines, employees, architectural elements, managers, etc.). Perfectly congruent with the last development of the sociology of translation developed by Michel Callon and Bruno Latour, this perspective illustrates the organizing property of communication through a process called 'interactoriality'. Jacques Lacan used to say that the unconscious is structured like a language. This book shows that a social organization is structured like a narrative.
