Abstract: Climate change is increasingly contested on financial terms. Different actors are advancing competing climate visions and interests by adopting financial positions. International institutions urge action by identifying financing gaps needed to meet climate targets. The finance sector claims it holds the key to unlocking money needed for climate investment. Activists expose greenwashing while using financial tactics to undermine fossil fuels. Vulnerable countries demand wealthy governments repay historical climate debts. This book offers an accessible and critical guide to the political economy and economic geography of climate finance. It identifies six competing ""positions"" of climate finance to make sense of the array of financial instruments, institutions and ideas that are remaking the relationship between capitalism and climate change. Using a wide range of case studies, from green bonds, to divestment, carbon offsetting, climate tech, central banks, and international climate funds, the authors show how climate finance is shaping our collective climate futures

Abstract: The volume offers insights into new theoretical approaches that should make it possible to analyse cultural change through migration. It focuses on concrete activities in local contexts and their significance for national narratives. Finally, it presents newer approaches in migration studies that use artistic methods and work with cultural institutions to drive cultural change

Abstract: Picta Nilotica Romana presents an in-depth analysis of Roman paintings with a Nilotic theme. The first part of the study introduces the classical texts on Egypt and provides an overview of landscape depiction in Roman art. After an outline of methodology, an iconographic-archaeological catalogue of the 74 paintings is developed, founded on specific scientific criteria, with a classification into three categories according to iconographic composition. The corpus is followed by an analysis of the archaeological contexts in which these paintings are found, an analysis of Nilotic iconographies and a definition of the 'Nilotic landscape'. The volume is also completed by an iconographic apparatus and several maps showing geographical and chronological spread

Abstract: Advances in UAE Archaeology details the results of new excavations conducted across the United Arab Emirates over the last few years. These excavations have revealed a wealth of new data on all periods of UAE archaeology from the Palaeolithic to the recent past. Some of these discoveries have filled in important gaps in our knowledge, while others have fundamentally revised what we thought we knew already. For example, the Marawah Island excavations have added a new facet to our understanding of the Neolithic period by revealing intriguing and hitherto unknown funerary rituals. Excavations in Al Ain in the emirate of Abu Dhabi continue to reveal extraordinary evidence of emgt falaj emgirrigation, stretching back 3000 years. The ubiquity of this system across this oasis city further validates its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Of particular importance is the discovery of extensive remains from the Late Pre-Islamic period, a significant time in history that has been best revealed in the excavations at Mleiha in the emirate of Sharjah. The research presented here was conducted by specialists from across the world working alongside an ever-growing cadre of Emirati archaeologists who will take the lead in the coming years in revealing more of this country’s extraordinary archaeology and history

Abstract: This study examines the ‘travel’ of political concepts between women's movements in the West around 1900 and argues that for the historical analysis of social movements, regardless of whether they were transnationally active or not, the exploration of the transfer practices that create spaces of exchange across linguistic and other borders is of eminent importance. It takes the biographical case of German feminist Käthe Schirmacher to explore political travelling, transnational journalism and translation as forms of transfer within and between social and political movements. The book analyses the political and pragmatic contexts of activist translation, discussing practices such as the rendering of political and literary texts, interpreting at transnational meetings and translating excerpts from foreign-language activist literature

Abstract: The volume presents research that emerges from the 9th International Adult Education Academy (2022), which brings together researchers, students and practitioners from around the world to share perspectives comparatively. More than 80 participants from almost 20 different countries have exchanged, compared and expanded their individual knowledge and experience on adult learning and education. This volume consisting of eight contributions (including one fundamental article beforehand) assumes that globalisation affects national, regional and local levels of adult learning and education. Transformational relations are observed and analysed through the lens of participation, sustainability and digitalisation. All contributions apply an international comparative research approach to empirically investigate these areas with their upcoming needs. This approach takes place under consideration of comparison as a research method which not only grounds on a long tradition and relies on a set of rules and techniques, but also on an inner attitude and sensitivity with which we look at the world and its global needs while trying to understand

Abstract: The Search for Wellbeing and Health between the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period compiles a series of works on cosmetics and health care, covering different geographical areas of Europe. The studies also focus on different cultures, with some chapters dedicated to the Hebrew sphere, others to the Muslim world, and a larger percentage dealing with Christian society. The contributions make use of some very important written sources: recipe books and treatises on medicine and cosmetics, especially those preserved from the Late Middle Ages (13th-15th centuries) onwards. These manuscripts reveal the raw materials used to make certain products, whose origin could be vegetable, animal or mineral. Many were used to combat various ailments, but also to take care of the body aesthetically. Thus, there are remedies to heal the eyes; to avoid problems with the teeth and to make them shine white; creams and soaps for the skin; hair dyes to avoid grey hair; lotions to combat baldness; and even diverse gastronomic recipes to obtain inner wellbeing. Other contributions take a more practical perspective. Studies are included in which some of the ingredients and products are explored through experimental archaeology (chemical analysis) and faunal remains obtained from archaeological campaigns are analysed in the laboratory, showing the Christian diet. Overall the book demonstrates the importance of healthcare and cosmetics in past societies that had very significant technical knowledge of a multitude of completely natural and sustainable products

Abstract: Metalworkers and their Tools brings together 12 papers by 22 authors from the “Metools” international symposium organised in at Queens University, Belfast in June 2016 as part of the HardRock project “Between a Rock and a Hard Place: context, function, and choice of early metalworking tools on Europe’s Atlantic façade” (Marie Skłodowska Curie, No. 623392) and the “Metal Ages in Europe” commission of the International Union of Pre- and Protohistoric Sciences (UISPP). Its aim was to shine a spotlight on the tools of the metalworker and to follow their evolution from the beginning of the Bronze Age through to the Iron Age, as well as the place held by metalworking and its artisans in the economic and social landscape of the period

Abstract: From Hydrology to Hydroarchaeology in the Ancient Mediterranean: An interdisciplinary approach is devoted to the study of water management in ancient cities. It compares the approaches and methods adopted by researchers from different disciplinary sectors to identify the water conditions of past societies and to highlight the measures they have taken to adapt to their water resources. Deriving from an interdisciplinary meeting held in Aix-en-Provence (Mediterranean House of Human Sciences) in 2019, it brings together seven articles that present the innovative results of collaborations between archaeologists and environmental scientists, geologists, geomorphologists, and climatologists in particular. After an introduction that situates the discussions conducted in Aix-en-Provence within the framework of the Watertraces project, funded by the A*Midex foundation (Aix-Marseille University), most of the articles focus on the Sicilian situation. An initial synthesis covers all aspects of the question, followed by four case studies ranging from the 4th century BC to the 1st century AD. Case studies on Agrigento, Termini Imerese/Thermai Himerenses, Alesa/Halaesa, Solunte and Tyndaris are presented. The focus then moves to southern Italy (the Terme di Baia), and to Aegean Greece (the sanctuary at Delphi)

Abstract: This collection of essays constitutes a timely intervention into contemporary debates on emotions, gender, race and power. Interrogating how emotional expectations are established as gendered, racialised and class-based notions, the volume explores the ways these expectations have been generated, stratified and maintained by institutions, societies, media and those with access to power. The collection draws upon a diverse set of case studies to present a chronologically and geographically broad intervention. The authors identify and explore connections between the depiction of twentieth-century transnational feminists, settler colonies in southern Africa, post-unification Italy, Maoist China, the twentieth-century Soviet Union and the medicalized spaces of the British Raj. Contributions also move across time from notions of eighteenth-century British masculinity, through Victorian Britain and whiteness in settler colonialism, to the Liverpool docks of the 1990s and contemporary Russia. Collectively, the volume’s authors seek to understand how the normalisation of emotions as a range of gendered qualities forms the basis upon which notions of self, and connectedly, social identities are performed. As such, this is an important contribution to the history of emotions that addresses how gender and emotions are formed as co-constituents within dominant power structures, in different geographic and temporal spaces

Abstract: This volume presents the pottery from Sudan Archaeological Research Society excavations at the site of Kawa, Northern Dongola Reach, between 1997 and 2018, fully illustrated with photographs and line drawings. This is the third in the series focusing on the fieldwork conducted at this important site. Volume III presents a comprehensive catalogue of the pottery found across the site, focusing on the forms, decoration, marks and fabric, as well as incorporating a discussion of the character of relevant areas. This includes a detailed discussion of the Napatan amphorae found in Building F1 and the cemetery remains at R18. The material at Kawa represents a unique collection of contextualised material invaluable for reconstructing activity patterns in this region during the Napatan and Meroitic periods and contributing towards an increased understanding of this time period

Abstract: Interrogates and explores African literature in African languages today, and the continuing interfaces between works in indigenous languages and those written in European languages or languages of colonizers. Sixty years after the Conference of African Writers of English Expression at Makerere University, the dominance in the global canon of African literatures written in European languages over those in indigenous languages continues to be an issue. This volume of re-examines this central question of African literatures to ask, What is the state of African literatures in African languages today? Contributors discuss the translation of Gurnah's novel Paradise to Swahili, and Osemwegies ;Ọrọ Epic;lt; to English, and Wolof wrestlers panegyrics. They analyse Edo eco-critical poetry, and the poetics of Igbo mask poetry, and morality in early prose fiction in indigenous Nigerian languages. Other essays contribute a semiotic analysis of Duruaku ;A Matter of Identity, and the decolonization of trauma in Uwem Akpan Say Youre One of Them. Overall, the volume paints a complex image of African cultural production in indigenous languages, especially in the ways Africas oral performance traditions remain resilient in the face of a seemingly undiminished presence of non-African language literary traditions

Abstract: This book focuses on the variety of strategies developed by women athletes in the Pacific Islands to claim contested sporting spaces – in particular, rugby union, soccer, beach volleyball, recreational sports and exercise – as a prism to explore grassroots women’s engagement with heavily entrenched postcolonial (hetero)patriarchy. Based on primary research conducted in Fiji, Samoa, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu, the book investigates contested sporting spaces as sites of infrapolitics intersected primarily by gender and also by other markers of inequality, including ethnicity, sexuality, class and geopolitics. Contrary to historical and contemporary representations of Pacific Island women as victims of gender injustice, it explores how these athletes and those who support them actively carve out space for their transformative agency. Pacific IslandWomen and Contested Sporting Spaces: Staking Their Claim focuses on a region underexamined by sport or gender studies researchers and will be of key interest to scholars and students in Gender Studies, Sport Studies, Sociology and Pacific Studies as well as sport practitioners and policymakers

Abstract: The appearance of new media and its enormous diffusion in the last decades of the 20th century and up to the present has greatly increased and diversified the reception of Egyptian themes and motifs and Egyptian influence in various cultural spheres. So-called ‘popular’ or ‘pop’ culture (cinema, genre fiction, TV-series, comics, graffiti, computer and video games, rock and heavy music, radio serials, among others) often makes use of narratives and motifs drawn from the observation and study of ancient Egypt, updated and reinterpreted in various ways, and which is now the subject of study by scholars of Egyptology. The present monograph seeks to provide new evidence of this interdisciplinarity between Egyptology and popular culture. It explores the conscious reinterpretation of the past in the work of contemporary authors, who shape an image of the Egyptian reality that in each case is determined by their own circumstances and contexts

Abstract: Edited by Martin Biddle with a catalogue of the known coins of the mint by Yvonne Harvey, this volume records and illustrates the minting of silver pennies in Winchester between the reigns of Alfred the Great and Henry III, a period of three and a half centuries. At the Mint, which was situated in the area of the High Street to the east of where the city’s cross now stands, at least 24 million silver pennies (possibly as many as 50 million) were struck. Five and a half thousand survive in museums and collections all over the world. These have been sought out and photographed (some 3200 coins in 6400 images detailing both sides), and minutely catalogued by Yvonne Harvey for this volume. 〈br〉〈br〉 During the period from late in the reign of Alfred to the time of Henry III, dies for striking the coins were produced centrally under royal authority in the most sophisticated system of monetary control at the time in the western world. In this first account of a major English mint to have been made in forty years, a team of leading authorities have studied and analysed the use the Winchester moneyers made of the dies, and together with the size, weight, and the surviving number of coins from each pair of dies, have produced a detailed account of the varying fortunes of the mint over this period. Their results are critical for the economic history of England and the changing status of Winchester over this long period, and provide the richest available source for the history of the name of the city and the personal names of its citizens in the later Anglo-Saxon period

Abstract: This volume aims to be a democratic and revolutionary tool, aimed at those who think it is important to practice medicine in a critical way and that the only teachers are the patients. This light but rigorous publication provides an introduction to the critical evaluation of scientific literature useful in everyday clinical practice. Starting with the clinical question, all aspects useful in clinical decision-making are addressed: the literature search, the interpretation and application of study results to the individual patient, the basic elements of cognitive decision-making. Each topic starts with a real-life clinical case in order to facilitate understanding and practical relevance of the topics covered. A glossary, an appendix for more technical topics and an extensive bibliography complete the volume. In the end, we think it will be interesting even for the most reactionary (or skeptical about "scientific evidence") physicians, also because ... it is Open Access!

Abstract: In any engineering field (including manufacturing, construction, transportation, aerospace, food and agriculture, oil and gas, etc.), ensuring product quality is fundamental to achieving success. Quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) are integral components of managing quality. According to the American Society for Quality (ASQ), QA is defined as the part of quality management that focuses on instilling confidence in meeting quality requirements, while QC is concerned with fulfilling those requirements. QA instills confidence internally within the engineering organization's management and externally with customers, government agencies, regulators, certifiers, and other stakeholders. QA primarily examines how processes are carried out or how products are made, while QC concentrates on product inspection. When QA and QC collaborate effectively, organizational efficiency is enhanced, resulting in superior products. Quality Control and Quality Assurance - Techniques and Applications explores various aspects of quality, including quality planning, QC, QA, and quality enhancement. It covers topics related to QA such as total quality management (TQM), failure testing, process and product quality assurance (PPQA), and statistical process control (SPC). QC includes chapters describing process control, control charts, acceptance sampling, and product quality assessment. For meaningful and easy traceability, the chapters are divided into four sections: 'Basics of QA/QC"; 'Applications of QA/QC in Industry"; 'Applications of QA/QC in Healthcare"; and 'Applications of QA/QC in Education". Covering the latest practices, techniques, and applications in QC and QA, this book is a valuable resource for engineering and business students, practicing engineers, engineering managers, and third-party agencies

Abstract: The book is primarily addressed to cultural managers, employees of cultural institutions, cultural animators, impresarios, and independent artists who independently disseminate their work, especially in the Polish-Czech cross-border market for cultural services. Potential audiences also include students, doctoral students, and academics working in the management of cultural institutions, cross-border cooperation, or international relations. The work may also be of use to city and regional leaders in the Polish-Czech borderland, for whom cooperation 'across borders' in the field of culture represents a potential opportunity for the development of the cultural offer, urban or regional infrastructure, and better promotion of the cross-border area. ``Central European territories have been historically exposed to innumerable social, economic, political, and cultural influences. Moreover, these territories have been crisscrossed by dozens of national, administrative, and cultural boundaries. This book, which deals primarily with cultural aspects of the Polish-Czech borderland naturally, reflects these facts. Moreover, it investigates the cross-border market for cultural services that represents a modern but not adequately researched theme. There is no doubt about the theoretical and practical importance of this book, which will definitely attract many readers.'' Professor Jan Sucháček -- Mendel University in Brno (The Czech Republic) ``The book guides the reader through the interdisciplinarity and complexity of shaping long-term relationships of cultural operators with Polish and Czech recipients of the cultural offer in the Polish-Czech cross-border market. Understanding such relationships is critical for achieving great performance in the whole cross-border market of cultural services, and the book offers the readers well-structured and useful knowledge in this regard. This book is a must-read for all cultural managers and policymakers.'' Professor Mateusz Lewandowski -- Jagiellonian University in Kraków (Poland)

Abstract: Disease Interception is based on the idea of stopping the development of diseases before the clinical manifestation by providing a targeted (medical) intervention. The concept is located between the categories of prevention and treatment of illness and addresses a new group of people: those who are no longer completely healthy, but who are not yet ill in the traditional sense implying a lack of symptoms or functional impairment. The articles focus on the framework needed for the development and application of Disease Interception, in particular the use of health data and digitalization, but also on the patients' perspective, the ethical implications, and the law of statutory health insurance. Abstract: Methodological, epistemic, and ontological borders have long prevented landscape and urban studies from engaging in transdisciplinary dialogue, sensuousness, and affect. "Researching Otherwise" uncovers possibilities for deploying sensory, collaborative, and restitutive methodological tools to craft spaces for producing knowledge from pluriversal worlds. These methods connect researchers and their objects of investigation in new ways to empower restitutive and regenerative futures "otherwise."Original contributions stem from research methods based on drawing, photography, sounding and listening, filmmaking, walking, and cartography. They reveal journeys of specialists and their companions while navigating through multi-species walks, engaging in cinematic and performative ways of knowing, submerging in ocean worlds, unsilencing bank vaults and troubled architectural histories, and exploring collaborative ethnographic investigations with refugees

Abstract: This book aims to establish a foundational understanding of the prohibition of self-favouring by digital gatekeepers as stipulated in Article 6(5) of the Digital Markets Act (DMA). It elineates current concerns while offering guidance for effective compliance. Until now, little attention has been paid to the intricate interrelations among online search engines and other digital services. This book seeks to elucidate this landscape, delineating, in particular the boundaries between online search engines, online intermediation services and online information services that designated gatekeeper need to consider when designing their systems to comply with the DMA. Article 6(5) targets 'platform envelopment' strategies that detrimentally impact consumers and businesses. The core concern is the presentation or the direct offering (i.e. embedding) of distinct services on the results pages of an online search engine. Such practices are permissible only if third-party providers of a similar service are afforded an equal opportunity for presentation or offering. Equivalence necessitates that no imbalances in rights or obligations remain and no disproportionate advantage in conferred on the gatekeeper's embedded first-party service, its online search engine or any other core platform service. This book sets out precise legal guidelines for achieving compliance with these obligations

Abstract: With the increasing data volume today, various methods and techniques are needed to make data-based decisions. Machine learning, which is a subset of artificial intelligence and has been frequently used for this purpose in recent years, has achieved great success in a wide variety of fields, ranging from education to production, and health to logistics. The ability to learn is the most basic feature of intelligence, and the purpose of machine learning is to try to develop machines that have the same intelligence level as humans. Machine learning is not only a technology but also a field that brings together many disciplines, embraces a wide audience, including students, researchers, and professionals, and has been developing rapidly and carrying us into the future. Another main focus is to investigate the accuracy with which programmed computers and machines produce results. Thus, the theoretical knowledge within this field and the principles of the algorithms to be used in the systems have gradually advanced. The best way to obtain information about a subject is to look at it from all perspectives. For this reason, it is thought to be very important to understand and learn the theory, approaches, problems, algorithms, and assumptions of machine learning. This book aims to provide a comprehensive guide to readers who want to gain knowledge and application skills in machine learning, especially on how to work with supervised and unsupervised learning algorithms using the powerful capabilities of the Microsoft Azure Machine Learning Studio (classic) Platform. Microsoft Azure Machine Learning Studio (classic) platform helps users in the process of obtaining information from data by providing many conveniences to users in developing cloud-based machine learning applications and distributing them as a web service. This book will guide researchers working on machine learning in fields such as computer science, engineering, statistics, and social sciences. It will also be a guide for engineers who will develop a certain application with basic methods. The book, which consists of ten chapters including theoretical and empirical studies, aims to eliminate the lack of resources in the Turkish literature about the Microsoft Azure Machine Learning Studio (classic) platform

Abstract: This book provides insights into the interplay between crisis, resilience, and innovation within news media. Examining how Norwegian news media adapted and innovated during the Covid-19 pandemic, it offers new knowledge on news organisations' resilience strategies and their ability to create value for themselves, their audiences, and for the broader society during times of unprecedented uncertainty. Through a diverse array of qualitative and quantitative methods, the research presented uncovers how crises serve as both opportunities for innovation and threats to journalism practices and businesses.Drawing on perspectives from journalism and media innovation studies, management and organisational research, and innovation theory, the empirical investigation identifies three overarching themes: the crisis as a catalyst for innovation, a critical test of resilience, and an amplifier of value creation. Through several empirical studies, we demonstrate how the Covid-19 pandemic prompted urgency- and ambition-driven innovation in Norwegian news media. This research showcases how organisations rapidly adapted to the crisis using digital tools, and how they introduced new services, amplifying economic and social value creation while navigating challenges to news workers' well-being.In conclusion, the theoretical perspectives on crisis, resilience, and innovation shed light on the transformative journey of Norway's news media during the Covid-19 crisis, offering valuable insights for scholars, practitioners, and policymakers alike.Mona K. Solvoll is associate professor at the School of Communication, Leadership and Marketing at Kristiania University College, Norway. Ragnhild Kr. Olsen is associate professor at the Department of Journalism and Media Studies at Oslo Metropolitan University, Norway. The research in the book originates from the "Media Innovation Through the Corona Crisis" project at the BI Norwegian Business School (2020-2021), funded by the Research Council of Norway

Abstract: This historiographical study deals with the transformation of heroic images of German and French soldiers and officers during the Seven Years' War and the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. A culture of sensitivity, levée en masse and intensive forms of opinion management on the part of governments and military leaders led to a change in heroic-military role models, which was reflected in personal military testimonies. Following an interdisciplinary approach, the monograph uses narratives and self-portrayals to examine the heroization processes of military personnel and shows how combatants influenced and helped shape the culture of remembrance through their self-heroization

Abstract: Artificial intelligence is a technological innovation seemingly associated with new opportunities and risks. Does this technological change require a new - an innovative - law in order to deal with the risks associated with AI? Based on both an analysis of the technical framework of AI and the philosophical nature of this technology, the author examines this question in the context of criminal liability for technological products. This analysis is embedded in a holistic assessment of the responsibility structures for technical products; in particular the proposed AI act and propsed changes of product liability under civil law are taken into account

Abstract: Why human rights don't work In The Effluent Eye, Rosemary J. Jolly argues for the decolonization of human rights, attributing their failure not simply to state and institutional malfeasance but to the very concept of human rights as anthropocentric-and, therefore, fatally shortsighted. In an engaging mix of literary and cultural criticism, Indigenous and Black critique, and substantive forays into the medical humanities, Jolly proposes right-making in the demise of human rights. Using what she calls an "effluent eye," Jolly draws on "Fifth Wave" structural public health to confront the concept of human rights-one of the most powerful and widely entrenched liberal ideas. She builds on Indigenous sovereignty work from authors such as Robin Wall Kimmerer, Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, and Mark Rifkin as well as the littoral development in Black studies from Christine Sharpe, Saidiya Hartman, and Tiffany Lethabo King to engage decolonial thinking on a range of urgent topics such as pandemic history and grief; gender-based violence and sexual assault; and the connections between colonial capitalism and substance abuse, the Anthropocene, and climate change. Combining witnessed experience with an array of decolonial texts, Jolly argues for an effluent form of reading that begins with the understanding that the granting of "rights" to individuals is meaningless in a world compromised by pollution, poverty, and successive pandemics. Abstract: The volume focuses on the political and economic relations between the Kingdoms of Naples and Sicily and the Dutch Republic in Eighteenth century. The starting point is the commercial treaty signed by the two States in 1753. Thanks to various Neapolitan and Dutch sources, the study reconstructs the political and commercial interests that underpinned the agreement, highlighting the importance of the relationships with Dutch Republic in Charles of Bourbon's "politica dei trattati". Through the analysis of the relations between a modest Mediterranean State and a mercantilist Power of the time (albeit in decline), the volume explores the Neapolitan "strategy" to find its own space amidst the clashes between the major commercial Powers of the period. By exanimating the impact of commercial treaty on the Dutch trades in Southern Italy, the book provides an initial approach to studying economic exchanges between the Dutch Republic and Naples. This lays the groundwork for a broader understanding of the relationships between Southern Italy and Northern Europe in the Eighteenth century, a topic on which much remains to be explored

Abstract: Orthogonal polynomials and special functions are two well-established streams of research in mathematical sciences. As is well known, they are considered classical and have seen many very interesting developments throughout the centuries, extending to original approaches and in-depth studies of the theoretical and/or applied problems considered. Since orthogonal polynomials and special functions are often used in applications, they have found use in various branches of mathematics (e.g., combinatorics, numerical analysis, representation theory, and number theory) and engineering, physics and astronomy, integrable systems, optics, quantum chemistry, computer science, etc. As such, the number of theoretical and applied problems solved using orthogonal polynomials and special functions is constantly growing. The aim of this Special Issue is to present recent trends and applications linked to orthogonal polynomials and special functions, mainly those pertaining to engineering mathematics and related topics

Abstract: The international system is going through a phase of heightened disorder. Russia's invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, and the Israel-Hamas conflict in late 2023 have shown that the current crisis of the international order is being increasingly militarized. Facing wars and instability closer to home, and a rise in big-power competition, Europe is feeling less and less "secure".This year's ISPI Report unpacks the different dimensions of the current "Age of Insecurity", looking into its political, economic, and demographic facets. It shows how different actors in the international system tackle such insecurity (while also contributing to create more), with a focus on the United States, China, Russia, India and the "Global South", and the main protagonists of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. It finally zooms in on Europe, looking for viable options that could help the continent better face these rising political, economic, and demographic insecurities

Abstract: The central topic of the book is contemporary ceramic art production in Italy, which is explored and analyzed in all declinations in order to illustrate the methodological models adopted by artists and designers. In particular, the investigation aims at tracing a paradigmatic sampling of ceramic art making and to identify the most significant contemporary experiences for each approach. The research strategy adopted is case study and it is supported by indirect and direct sources, including the testimonies of the protagonists. The analysis of creative dynamics also permits to deal with some modern aesthetics issues, such as the relationship between art and technique, the hierarchy between forms of expression, the gender issues, the relationship between art, industry and craft, and artistic communication. Thus, through the dialectical comparisons between the cases examined and their exposition in chronological order, the study retraces salient moments in the history of Italian contemporary fictile art

Abstract: An inquiry into how livestreaming can help us meaningfully connectLivestreaming is ubiquitous in our Covid-19-inflected era. In this book, EL Putnam takes up the implications of this technology, arguing that livestreamed internet broadcasts perform aesthetic and ethical encounters that invite distinctive means of relating to others. Treating humans and technologies as inherently relational, Putnam considers how livestreaming constitutes new patterns of being together that are complex, ambivalent, and transformative. Understood in such a way, we see how livestreaming exceeds quantifying and calculating metrics, challenges emphasis on content generation, and introduces an entirely new-and dynamic-means of social engagement

Abstract: The book provides a comprehensive legal assessment of four different types of safe pathways to protection in the EU: the asylum visa, resettlement, ad hoc humanitarian admission and sponsorship programs. It investigates the effects these pathways can have on the asylum paradox, that is the paradoxical interplay in current EU asylum policy between the granting of territorial protection on the one hand and the prevention of access to territory on the other. Based on the assumption, that the asylum paradox is the result of a conflict of responsibility principles, the book develops an analytical tool, a responsibility framework, for the analysis and assessment. Overall, the book identifies normative differences, depending on the specific pathway and its details of implementation

Abstract: In the process of digitalization and artificial intelligence (AI), data protection and digital ethics are trending topics. However, they are rarely considered in conjunction even though these areas are inextricably linked. This volume, the first in a series, seeks to close this gap. Informational self-determination is an expression of a European understanding of values, particularly with regard to smart technologies and AI applications. In addition to socially relevant dimensions of data protection and digital ethics, the authors demonstrate the influence of networked technologies on the experience and manipulation of modern reality, digitalized childhoods being one of them. Further thematic highlights from the perspective of data protection illustrate the multifaceted nature of the interdisciplinary approach of this book which will be continued throughout the series. Abstract: This book delves into the research-policy nexus as it relates to development in Africa. It does so by examining four country-cases - Botswana, Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya and Zambia - while referring to South Africa as a possible exemplar case. The book reaffirms that the majority of governments in Africa spend less than one per cent of their GDP on research and development (R&D) despite the commitment to raise their research funding levels contained in the Lagos Plan of Action (1980). Hence, reliance on external funding for research persists on the continent. To manage research engagements and public funds, Science Granting Councils (SGCs) have been established. These institutions are held accountable for how public funds are spent and how the research they fund contributes to the advancement of society.To-date, the SGCs and researchers have demonstrated in various ways how funded research contributes to the advancement of society. However, there appear to be differences in opinion amongst key stakeholders in terms of what constitutes research priorities as well as expectations in terms of the returns on research investments made. This book brings to the fore the importance of research and its outcome on societal development, and reveals the stake that African governments hold in the process. The book encourages African governments to show greater commitment to providing funding for research on the continent. This is critical if governments are to assume a lead role in the continent's development agenda. It would also set the stage for partnerships with other stakeholders, including industry and funding organisations. Researchers are also encouraged to work closely with the SGCs to ensure the valorisation of research products for societal benefit. This has a potential to unlock more funding for research in Africa which, in turn, would drive the development of the continent

Abstract: Changing the world in court - this is what strategic litigation is all about. In an interdisciplinary study, Lisa Hahn examines under which conditions such change can be achieved and why the collective mobilization of law is essential for this. Strategic litigation unites people in a litigation collective and thus contributes to overcoming individual barriers to access to justice. Lisa Hahn reaches this conclusion by drawing on legal mobilization theory, through a historical reconstruction of seminal court cases and by examining strategic litigation as an instrument for implementing the human right to access to justice. Empirical case studies on migration and surveillance provide unique insights into litigation collectives

Abstract: How do the rights of same-sex couples have to be ensured by states, and which kind of environmental obligations are induced by the right to life and to personal integrity? Questions as diverse and far-reaching as these are regularly dealt with by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in its advisory function. This book is the first comprehensive, non-Spanish-written treatise on the advisory function of this Court. It analyzes the scope of the Court's advisory jurisdiction and its procedural practice in comparison with that of other international courts. Moreover, the legal effects of the Court's advisory opinions and the question when the Court should better reject a request for an advisory opinion are examined

Abstract: South Africa is under-capitalising on its rich ways of doing business. One such way, the focus of this book, is collaboration. The collaboration approach should be promoted to the same extent that the Japanese have entrenched and exported their 'small incremental improvement' Kaizen approach. There are many such underexplored indigenous ways of doing business in Africa. Where improvement is required in relation to development and organisational performance, the need is not so much building new capacities as discovering and implementing more strategic and effective utilisation of existing indigenous ones. And there is no need to cringe when African culture is used to inform science. This book uses history, interviews and documentary evidence from South Africa to weave together a story, arguments and lessons about collaboration

Abstract: This volume presents the didactic work developed in the four Laboratori di Composizione Architettonica e Urbana 4 and the related Lettura Morfologica courses of the 5UE Degree Course. Starting from the identification of a common theme - the Insula of Santa Chiara in the historical centre of the city of Naples - the fourth year Labs explored the relationships that exist today between community, architecture and city, focusing on. The empty spaces along the perimeter of the monastery, between the boundary wall and the consolidated historical core of the monastic citadel, were the subject of a reflection aimed at their valorisation and integration into the city through urban regeneration strategies. Through the study of these sites, the workshops explored the relationship between architecture and the city, experimenting with methods and ways of intervening in a dense context, highly stratified over time, a privileged field for the study and verification of an architecture capable of perpetuating the values and meanings of the historic city, resisting time and overcoming the transience of fashions. The essays and projects collected in this volume illustrate and describe the results of an experience that has allowed the coexistence of old and new, of community and architecture, reinforcing meanings and characters and perpetuating the civic and cultural role of the monastic citadel

Abstract: While the surge of populism in the West has attracted considerable public attention, countries often considered to be on Europe's 'periphery' have largely escaped both scholarly and general interest. Political developments in Armenia, Albania, Bosnia, Georgia, Northern Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia are poorly understood politically and often opaque to non-specialists. Yet the societies, economies, politics and the aspirations of the people in these countries remain closely intertwined with the rest of Europe and its development. From the perspectives of scholars from the region, this book offers an informed assessment of the role, causes and political consequences of populism in areas that are important but often ignored parts of the European political landscape. Abstract: How institutional and interpersonal policing have been central to worldmaking Policing is constitutive of colonial modernity: normalizing, internalizing, and legalizing anti-Black violence as the ongoing condition for white life and freedom. The result, Tia Trafford argues here, is a situation where we cannot practically experience or even imagine worlds free from policing. From the plantation to the prison, global apartheid, and pandemic control, this book examines why and how policing has become the most ingrained, commonsense-and insidious-way of managing our world

Abstract: This collection presents new research on key topics in anthropological linguistics, with a focus on African languages. While Africanist linguists have long been concerned with sociocultural aspects of language structure and use, no comprehensive volume dedicated to the anthropological linguistics of Africa has yet been published. This volume seeks to fill this gap. The chapters address a broad range of topics in anthropological linguistics, including classic themes such as spatial reference, color, kin terms, and emotion, as well as emerging interests in the linguistic expression of personhood, sociality, and language ideology. All contributions are based on original empirical research and present insights into African language practices from a sociocultural perspective. The volume showcases research on dozens of African languages spoken across the continent, with particular emphasis on languages of East Africa. This book will be of interest to areal specialists as well as to anthropological linguists worldwide

Abstract: When investigating the relationship that may have existed between Latin declamations and the Roman legal experience, the study of the lex inscripti maleficii Latin declamations and the Roman juridical experience, the study of the lex inscripti maleficii is something of a challenge. There is no trace of such a rule in legal texts and it is often presented as a paradigm of the activity of schools of rhetoric, detached from the real processes that took place in the forum. This study proposes a new analysis of the scholastic norm. It starts from the reflection that historiography has carried out on it and then examines in detail all the arguments used in the declamations that had it as a protagonist. It is on the basis of these arguments that new questions arise from which to analyse the law. New ways of questioning its connection with reality that point towards a particular relationship with the Roman juridical experience

Abstract: In today's Norway, there are more than 300,000 people who have had cancer, or are living with cancer. Knowledge about the social and personal aspects of surviving cancer is still limited, something this book takes up in a broad sense. Do all forms of cancer, side effects of the treatment or late effects evoke the same amount of empathy? Who sets the agenda for how illness in general, and cancer in particular, is addressed publicly? And how can cancer survivors be better understood and met on their own terms? In this anthology, researchers with different professional backgrounds examine how it is experienced to get cancer, and how these experiences are linked to society's ideas about cancer and cancer survival

Abstract: This open access volume of LIDC contributions focuses on how competition and intellectual property laws incorporate sustainability objectives. Businesses are increasingly embracing sustainability objectives, driven by the international community. Although competition and intellectual property law are certainly not the only tools for addressing sustainability issues, they can play a role in moving toward a more sustainable society. Sustainability has gained prominence in competition law in all jurisdictions covered in this volume. The contributions focus on classic questions such as whether sustainability agreements restrict competition and, if so, to what extent businesses can be exempted on efficiency grounds. The papers also raise a number of questions, in particular concerning the treatment of non-market efficiencies. The soft law and case law produced by competition authorities are examined, and the leadership role of some competition authorities in the field - from advocacy to policy papers and sustainability guidelines - is highlighted. The authors call for more individual guidance to provide enhanced transparency and clarity to industry, advisors and society at large on sustainability issues, with guidelines or sustainability-related block exemptions providing even greater legal certainty. With regard to intellectual property, the contributions examine various important issues, such as the need for intellectual property rights to remain technology-neutral, ways to promote the use of sustainable technologies and incentives for licensing, and ways to promote the dissemination of sustainable technologies, including compulsory licensing, cross-licensing, open source or FRAND licensing, and replacing the destruction of counterfeit goods with recycling. The papers also discuss greenwashing and how it can be addressed through revisions to trademarks and related rights

Abstract: The international scholarly community dedicates the monographic volume Il teatro tra Quattrocento e Seicento to Konrad Eisenbichler, a refined scholar and keen critic, who, through texts and theatrical performances, captures the depth and infinite variety of scenes from daily life-a chiasmus of laughter and tears, as Giordano Bruno notes in the frontispiece of Candelaio, " In tristitia hilaris, in hilaritate tristis," a motto elevated by Pirandello to the emblem of Humour. The volume gathers contributions from Nerida Newbigin, Francesca Bortoletti, Anna Maria Testaverde, Gianni Cicali, Matteo Leta, Michel Plaisance, Johnny L. Bertolio, Maria Galli Stampino, Rosalind Kerr, Pasquale Sabbatino, Francesco Divenuto, Ambra Moroncini, who enthusiastically accepted the invitation to celebrate Konrad Eisenbichler's long career of research and teaching at the University of Toronto, on the occasion of his seventy-fifth birthday, warmly paying tribute to the Master, the friend, and the colleague
