Abstract: The plight of Vietnamese migrants in the UK has featured prominently in recent media and public policy debates on modern slavery, illegal border crossings, and labour exploitation. Yet little attention has been paid to their subjective experiences of border crossings, nor the wide range of categories they pass between. Vietnamese migrants coming to the UK in search of work face a complex array of decisions surrounding the respective costs and risks related to a chosen migration route which must be weighed against personal and collective expectations. These complex decisions are compounded by a shifting and highly stratified immigration and borders regime which renders migrants more vulnerable through restricting rights and increasing surveillance. This chapter explores the experiences and imaginaries of the UK border among migrants who have crossed the UK border, as well as those who intend to make the journey. We explore the contrast between the expectations and realities of UK borders through in-depth interviews with Vietnamese migrants. We argue, notwithstanding knowledge of the risks involved in border crossings and the hostile border enforcement regime, imaginations of opportunities for transforming local livelihoods remain powerful and deep-seated political and cultural narratives for Vietnamese migrants

Abstract: Welcome to the world of artificial intelligence, where digitalization has transformed the globe worldwide. This book investigates the 'system capabilities' and its utilization through the lens of leadership as per its idiosyncrasy. The thesis of this book emphasizes that it is not the form of government but the efficient utilization of the system capabilities by the leadership that make the difference in the socio-political and economic development of any country in the world. It provides a dynamic landscape of globalization, discovering how two economic dynamos-China and India-navigate and shape the complicated web of global relations in the contemporary era.As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, understanding the roles of major players in shaping global systems is crucial. China and India, with their rich histories, diverse cultures, and rapidly evolving economies, stand as pivotal actors in the unfolding narrative of our shared global future

Abstract: How institutional and interpersonal policing have been central to worldmaking Policing is constitutive of colonial modernity: normalizing, internalizing, and legalizing anti-Black violence as the ongoing condition for white life and freedom. The result, Tia Trafford argues here, is a situation where we cannot practically experience or even imagine worlds free from policing. From the plantation to the prison, global apartheid, and pandemic control, this book examines why and how policing has become the most ingrained, commonsense-and insidious-way of managing our world

Abstract: The book provides a comprehensive legal assessment of four different types of safe pathways to protection in the EU: the asylum visa, resettlement, ad hoc humanitarian admission and sponsorship programs. It investigates the effects these pathways can have on the asylum paradox, that is the paradoxical interplay in current EU asylum policy between the granting of territorial protection on the one hand and the prevention of access to territory on the other. Based on the assumption, that the asylum paradox is the result of a conflict of responsibility principles, the book develops an analytical tool, a responsibility framework, for the analysis and assessment. Overall, the book identifies normative differences, depending on the specific pathway and its details of implementation

Abstract: This volume brings together most of the papers presented at the IV Encuentro Hispano-Luso de Historiadores del Derecho / IV Encontro hispano-luso de historiadores do Direito held at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona in June 2022. After a brief presentation by the editorial coordinator and the inaugural lecture by the prestigious Finnish professor Heikki Pihlajamäki, the twenty-five chapters deal with magnetic legal aspects of the Iberian territories in the middle, modern and, above all, contemporary ages, until the end of the twentieth century. Special emphasis is placed on jurisdictional conflicts, insurance doctrine in the 'ius commune' period, judicial experiences and figures, and the construction and crisis of the liberal state. It is fascinating to see how the work of Spanish and Portuguese legal historians is progressing in parallel, each time better connected, but with singular focuses of interest. The vitality of the discipline is well portrayed, in a progressively global scenario

Abstract: The prepared scientific monograph entitled The importance of social innovations in the knowledge-based economy in the context of footwear sector solutions is an attempt to further exemplify social innovations by identifying real links between social need and a specific good, service, method and process, in the context of solutions used in the footwear industry. Poland is one of the leading European footwear manufacturers, ranking 7th in terms of production volume in the EU, with a market share of 2.5%. In addition, strong competition is observed in the industry, which is conducive to the emergence of new innovations. The work contains theoretical and practical references to innovations in the industry, such as examples of modifications of footwear materials that have been used in business practice, and their measurable effect is to improve the comfort of using footwear. The authors refer to the environmental aspects of innovation, indicating the directions of utilization of production residues of the footwear and tanning industry, including composites, granules, and biostimulants for plants. The subject matter taken up in the monograph is an important contribution to the development of further scientific research covering the footwear industry and its importance in developing social innovations in Poland and the world. Based on the obtained research results and statistical data analysis, we attempted to outline the prospects for the development of social innovations in the footwear industry until 2050. The book can be an interesting study for practitioners and theoreticians, particularly for scientists representing disciplines such as economics and finance, management sciences, materials engineering, or entrepreneurs looking for opportunities to finance innovation in various areas. Publication was funded by the state budget under the program of the Ministry of Education and Science called "Science for Society" (Poland), project title "The impact of footwear design, materials and proper fit on the health of children and adolescents", project number NdS/539367/2021/2021, amount of funding 796 964,00 PLN total value of the project 796 964,00 PLN

Abstract: Escaping Kakania is about fascinating characters-soldiers, doctors, scientists, writers, painters-who traveled from their eastern European homelands to colonial Southeast Asia. Their stories are told by experts on different countries in the two regions, who bring diverse approaches into a conversation that crosses disciplinary and national borders. The 14 chapters deal with the diverse encounters of eastern Europeans with the many faces of colonial southeast Asia. Some essays directly engage with post-colonial studies, contributing to an ongoing critical re-evaluation of eastern European "semi-peripheral" (non-)involvement in colonialism. Other chapters disclose a range of perspectives and narratives that illuminate the plurality of the travelers' positions while reflecting on the specificity of the eastern European experience. The travellers moved-as do the chapter authors-between two regions that are off-centre, in-between, shiftingly "Eastern," and disorientingly heterogeneous, thus complicating colonial and postcolonial notions of "Europe," "East," and East-West distinctions. Both at home and overseas, they navigated among a multiplicity of peoples, "races," and empires, Occidents and Orients, fantasies of the Self and the Other, adopting/adapting/mimicking/rejecting colonialist identities and ideologies. They saw both eastern Europe and southeast Asia in a distinctive light, as if through each other-and so will the readers of Escaping Kakania

Abstract: Digitization has had a profound impact on the way we represent, communicate, and therefore manage cultural heritage today, both online and in-presence; at the same time, the increasingly immediate and faster transfer of audio and video contents has made possible the production of stories that are more appealing to the audience. Consequently, the evolution of digital technologies available to storytellers has influenced the form of the narratives themselves. New multimedia technologies, such as hypertexts and graphic and audiovisual materials, can today be integrated into the storytelling, introducing innovative concepts and stimulating interest, thus giving rise to new media cultures. In the digital age of streaming, the enjoyment of audiovisual content is unprecedented, offering opportunities not only for creators but also for audiences. This scenario encourages the possibility of offering customized contents, tailored to the diverse and specific audiences that characterize the current public interested in cultural heritage. This approach makes it possible to create tailored narratives, maximizing cultural and emotional impact.Since the last decade, a new mode of storytelling called digital storytelling, or storytelling in the digital environment, has been spreading rapidly, a true communicative system based on storytelling through multimedia, which enhances the expressive and communicative capabilities of traditional storytelling through Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). The most successful elements that characterize the digital storytelling are a storytelling that places the user at the center, who is asked questions through a narrative voice that continually requires an engagement interaction visual and sound effects, an appropriate soundtrack, images with strong emotional impact, and a pace that is never boring. The "Masterpieces of the Mann" project was thus created with the aim of experimenting with new forms of expression for the communication of museum heritage using digital tools: based on the potential of digital storytelling, about 30 educational videos have been produced which adopt relevant digital techniques for the digitization of assets, representation, illustration, animation and video-editing with the aim of enhancing the visitor experience, making it engaging through the emotional impact of the visual elements supporting the narrative and engaging through audience interaction with characters drawn as guides, who ask questions, encourage observation, stimulate hypothesis formulation and tell anecdotes, stories and trivia about the works in an informal way. The decision to use videos as the communicative medium is based on the desire to activate active learning and engagement during the in-person museum experience. The design of the four video tours, to be viewed in the presence of each asset, in the museum, using the visitor's simple personal smartphone, stems from the desire to develop the user's observation skills. Thus, the viewer can observe the videos near the museum asset, which graphically (and through digital animations) highlight its shapes, geometries, proportions and iconographic details to then be able to recognize them independently on the artwork. It is a path of learning first and then discovery that reinforces and receives narratives through the digital storytelling of the videos and consolidates the received notions with the physical and emotional experience of conscious observation and recognition. With the aim of ensuring the accessibility to the widest possible audience, the design of two pathways also took into consideration children with special needs, i.e., young visitors born with cognitive deficits, particularly autism spectrum disorders, for whom new ways of fruition in virtual reality were tested

Abstract: The series 'Law and Religions' takes a multidisciplinary approach to addressing the tense relationship between these two basic conditions of social life. This second volume examines interdisciplinary approaches to the topic of law and religions from different perspectives, primarily from the humanities. They make it clear that law and religions is a multidisciplinary topic that offers points of reference in many specialised disciplines and cultures. For the further development of this subject area, such interdisciplinary contributions should be included in research into it to a greater extent than has been the case to date. Abstract: This volume aims to be a democratic and revolutionary tool, aimed at those who think it is important to practice medicine in a critical way and that the only teachers are the patients. This light but rigorous publication provides an introduction to the critical evaluation of scientific literature useful in everyday clinical practice. Starting with the clinical question, all aspects useful in clinical decision-making are addressed: the literature search, the interpretation and application of study results to the individual patient, the basic elements of cognitive decision-making. Each topic starts with a real-life clinical case in order to facilitate understanding and practical relevance of the topics covered. A glossary, an appendix for more technical topics and an extensive bibliography complete the volume. In the end, we think it will be interesting even for the most reactionary (or skeptical about "scientific evidence") physicians, also because ... it is Open Access!

Abstract: Carl Bilfinger was a professor of public law at the universities of Halle, Heidelberg, and Berlin. From 1943 to 1945 and from 1949 to 1954 he was director of the Kaiser Wilhelm/Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law. A companion and follower of Carl Schmitt since 1924, Bilfinger argued for an extensive interpretation of the presidential system of the Weimar Republic, the subsequent dictatorship, and National Socialism. This edition reconstructs Bilfinger's political biography on the basis of a wide range of sources. The published letters, texts, and documents, including a series of articles offering initial interpretations of his work, reveal Bilfinger's close personal and intellectual relationship with Schmitt. Abstract: Richard Hofstadter's thesis of Anti-intellectualism in American Life, first published in 1963, is now widely used as a compelling explanation for the resurgence of populism. This anthology subjects Hofstadter's historical master narrative to rigorous scrutiny. It uses examples of epochs, social groups and problems that are constitutive for Hofstadter's interpretation of U.S. history. From an interdisciplinary perspective, the authors examine the complex of anti-/intellectualism with regard to political practice, the construction of ethnic identity, the significance of gender and religion. The protagonists are gentlemen scholars, social climbers, U.S. presidents, immigrants, educated women, journalists, talk show hosts, religious communities and their leaders - and, of course, Hofstadter himself. Two questions come to the fore: What is the book's enduring legacy beyond current political issues? And can the book be the key to understanding the present that some claim it is?

Abstract: Methodological, epistemic, and ontological borders have long prevented landscape and urban studies from engaging in transdisciplinary dialogue, sensuousness, and affect. "Researching Otherwise" uncovers possibilities for deploying sensory, collaborative, and restitutive methodological tools to craft spaces for producing knowledge from pluriversal worlds. These methods connect researchers and their objects of investigation in new ways to empower restitutive and regenerative futures "otherwise."Original contributions stem from research methods based on drawing, photography, sounding and listening, filmmaking, walking, and cartography. They reveal journeys of specialists and their companions while navigating through multi-species walks, engaging in cinematic and performative ways of knowing, submerging in ocean worlds, unsilencing bank vaults and troubled architectural histories, and exploring collaborative ethnographic investigations with refugees

Abstract: Artificial intelligence is a technological innovation seemingly associated with new opportunities and risks. Does this technological change require a new - an innovative - law in order to deal with the risks associated with AI? Based on both an analysis of the technical framework of AI and the philosophical nature of this technology, the author examines this question in the context of criminal liability for technological products. This analysis is embedded in a holistic assessment of the responsibility structures for technical products; in particular the proposed AI act and propsed changes of product liability under civil law are taken into account

Abstract: It addresses from a multidisciplinary perspective contemporary challenges in the fields of drug legislation, pedagogical innovation for the creation of university spin-offs, the economic impact of technostress on academic productivity, and evolving trends in sentencing and its focus on reinsertion. Through a critical analysis of drug legislation, the paper highlights the importance of considering health and rehabilitation rather than criminalization. It examines how integrating family businesses into university education can foster innovation and entrepreneurship. It highlights the hidden costs of technostress on academic productivity, underscoring the need for management strategies. Finally, he discusses the evolution of sentencing with a focus on social reintegration as a means to improve public safety and reduce recidivism

Abstract: A complex array of individual responses to the abuse of power by the state is represented in this book in three horrific episodes in the history of East-Central Europe. The three events followed each other within a span of about ten years: the deportation and murder of Hungarian Jews in Nazi death and labor camps; the Arrow Cross terrorist rule in Budapest; and finally the Stalinist terror in Hungary and East-Central Europe. Through the prism of survival, László Borhi explores the relationship between the individual and power, attempting to understand the mechanism of oppression and terror produced by arbitrary, unbridled power through the experience of normal people. Despite the obvious peculiarities of time and place, the Hungarian cases convey universal lessons about the Holocaust, Nazism, and Stalinism. In the author's conception, the National Socialist and Stalinist experiences are linked on several levels. Both regimes defended their visions of the future against social groups whom they saw as implacable enemies of those visions, and who therefore had to be destroyed for sake of social perfection. Furthermore, the social practices of National Socialism were passed on. And although Stalinism was imposed by a foreign power, some of the survival skills for coping with it were rehearsed under the previous hellish experience

Abstract: Unveiling the physical properties of the Earth's ionosphere is crucial for the comprehension of the dynamic processes occurring within it across various spatial and temporal scales. This is essential for comprehending numerous phenomena associated with Space Weather. The ionosphere, composed of ions and electrons, responds to the initiation, intensification and evolution of magnetic and electric fields, potentially altering its physical properties and energy balance. These changes can significantly affect the propagation properties of electromagnetic signals passing through the ionosphere. In this context, the Special Issue "Ionosphere Monitoring with Remote Sensing Vol. II" seeks to advance our understanding of the ionosphere by utilising data from various facilities and established ionospheric models

Abstract: Basing her analysis on a systematic review of current understandings of theological anthropology within Islam-related research and their problematisation in the light of developments in the history of concepts and science, Esma Isis-Arnautović ventures a new approach. Using the communication and theoretically oriented model of revelation by the Egyptian Qur'an scholar Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd, she discusses the potential offered by the justifiability of theological anthropology from a revelation-based theological perspective and thus paves the way towards developing theological anthropology as a paradigm that goes far beyond the exegetical research of Muslim images of human beings

Abstract: The monograph contains the results of research devoted to determining the vulnerability of passenger road transport in Poland by identifying the nature and scale of changes in transport accessibility and changes in the network traffic load in the event of a flood (with different probabilities of occurrence), conducted under the project number 2018/29/B/HS4/01020, financed by the National Science Center in Poland. In the course of the implementation of such formulated main goal of the study, an attempt was made to achieve a group of specific objectives of a cognitive, methodological and application character. The research was conducted mainly on the basis of data on the extent of flood risk areas in Poland and their development, as well as the road network and the development of its neighborhood. The publication may be of interest to researchers dealing with the geography of transport or - more broadly - with socio-economic geography and spatial management. It can also be helpful material for students of study programs that relate to the geography of transport, transport accessibility or spatial mobility in their curriculum. The content of the thesis covers issues that can be used by specialists in crisis management or road infrastructure management in crisis situations related to the occurrence of a flood

Abstract: Do general anti-avoidance rules around the world show, despite their different design, more similarities than it seems at first? In order to answer this question, the author examines the law of Hong Kong, Singapore and the People's Republic of China as a counterpart to Western legal systems and reviews them using a methodological approach developed by Christine Osterloh-Konrad in her work "Tax Avoidance". As a result, it is shown that Osterloh-Konrad's model is universally applicable to the various designs of general anti-avoidance provisions. At the same time, a comprehensive insight into the tax systems of various East-Asian jurisdictions is given

Abstract: Why human rights don't work In The Effluent Eye, Rosemary J. Jolly argues for the decolonization of human rights, attributing their failure not simply to state and institutional malfeasance but to the very concept of human rights as anthropocentric-and, therefore, fatally shortsighted. In an engaging mix of literary and cultural criticism, Indigenous and Black critique, and substantive forays into the medical humanities, Jolly proposes right-making in the demise of human rights. Using what she calls an "effluent eye," Jolly draws on "Fifth Wave" structural public health to confront the concept of human rights-one of the most powerful and widely entrenched liberal ideas. She builds on Indigenous sovereignty work from authors such as Robin Wall Kimmerer, Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, and Mark Rifkin as well as the littoral development in Black studies from Christine Sharpe, Saidiya Hartman, and Tiffany Lethabo King to engage decolonial thinking on a range of urgent topics such as pandemic history and grief; gender-based violence and sexual assault; and the connections between colonial capitalism and substance abuse, the Anthropocene, and climate change. Combining witnessed experience with an array of decolonial texts, Jolly argues for an effluent form of reading that begins with the understanding that the granting of "rights" to individuals is meaningless in a world compromised by pollution, poverty, and successive pandemics. Abstract: Public law and its scholarship interact in many ways with other areas of law - be they norms of other origins or those typically assigned to other areas domestically - as well as insights from other disciplines. It is only by looking at these interactions that public law and its scholarship can be seen in a larger context. The contributions to the conference volume analyse law at all levels, use interdisciplinary or comparative law methods and illuminate the interactions of public law embedded in concrete questions about democracy, livelihoods, climate justice and feminist perspectives. Abstract: The technical and economic history of data technologies tends to focus on the US history of mainframes and personal computers. From this perspective, genuinely European developments in data processing are often declared to be non-innovative marginal phenomena. However, long before the triumph of the PC, with its version of "mid-range computing", the European office machine industry brought computers into offices ". This volume analyzes how office machines were developed into computers in Europe in the 1960s and successfully sold on European markets, until the PC became a universal office machine in the 1980s. From the perspective of companies, national, and European Community industrial and research policies, it shows this European path into the computer age. Abstract: The international scholarly community dedicates the monographic volume Il teatro tra Quattrocento e Seicento to Konrad Eisenbichler, a refined scholar and keen critic, who, through texts and theatrical performances, captures the depth and infinite variety of scenes from daily life-a chiasmus of laughter and tears, as Giordano Bruno notes in the frontispiece of Candelaio, " In tristitia hilaris, in hilaritate tristis," a motto elevated by Pirandello to the emblem of Humour. The volume gathers contributions from Nerida Newbigin, Francesca Bortoletti, Anna Maria Testaverde, Gianni Cicali, Matteo Leta, Michel Plaisance, Johnny L. Bertolio, Maria Galli Stampino, Rosalind Kerr, Pasquale Sabbatino, Francesco Divenuto, Ambra Moroncini, who enthusiastically accepted the invitation to celebrate Konrad Eisenbichler's long career of research and teaching at the University of Toronto, on the occasion of his seventy-fifth birthday, warmly paying tribute to the Master, the friend, and the colleague

Abstract: Paul Maas (1880-1964) was one of the most important classical scholars of the XX century. An excellent metricologist and theorist of textual criticism, he had the valuable habit of densely annotating the books of his personal library. Many of these volumes are now at the University of Milan and preserve a high amount of still unpublished reflections and textual proposals. In particular, all of the known volumes of Maas dedicated to Sappho and Alcaeus are now in Milan. In years when the study of Aeolic lyric has been revived by papyrological discoveries and new critical editions, this book aims at providing scholars with a broad selection of commented notes by Maas on the two poets. A postcard by Paul Maas to Achille Vogliano about a fragment of Aeolic lyric is published in the appendix

Abstract: The use of synthetic chemical products, both organic and inorganic, has been important since the mid-20th century. The effects of these compounds and elements on organisms, their behavior in different environments such as aquatic systems, and the description of new disruptive technologies that mitigate their impacts are described in this work. This Special Issue demonstrates the fate of pollutants in aquatic environments, such as rivers and seas, and potential mitigation technologies. It contributes to expanding knowledge of the adverse effects of pollutants that reach aquatic environments, their fate once they enter the food chain, and the effectiveness of mitigating, including through circular economy approaches

Abstract: When investigating the relationship that may have existed between Latin declamations and the Roman legal experience, the study of the lex inscripti maleficii Latin declamations and the Roman juridical experience, the study of the lex inscripti maleficii is something of a challenge. There is no trace of such a rule in legal texts and it is often presented as a paradigm of the activity of schools of rhetoric, detached from the real processes that took place in the forum. This study proposes a new analysis of the scholastic norm. It starts from the reflection that historiography has carried out on it and then examines in detail all the arguments used in the declamations that had it as a protagonist. It is on the basis of these arguments that new questions arise from which to analyse the law. New ways of questioning its connection with reality that point towards a particular relationship with the Roman juridical experience

Abstract: Throughout the Cold War and into the 1990s, the Marine Corps faced multiple strategic inflection points. Some of these moments were fights for institutional survival, some were based on emerging technology or internal upheaval, while others were more concerned with developing operational doctrine. When compared to the development of its amphibious warfare doctrine between World War I and World War II, these Cold War decisions related to the Marine Corps came about at an astonishing pace. Many of these post-World War II moments came only after painful experiences in increasingly complex and multidimensional Joint combat operations or humanitarian interventions, where international politics, rapidly changing technology, new societal norms, and even culture played an ever-larger role on the battlefield. For the Marine Corps, the Cold War and beyond seemingly required its senior leaders to predict the rapid-fire changes that impacted the new way of war and evolving politics of conflict. In response, those leaders continually transformed the Marine Corps to ensure it played a significant role in U.S. military matters

Abstract: Fractional calculus (FC) has emerged as a beneficial tool for the study of dynamical systems. This is due to the fact that fractional-order (FO) operators capture the memory of all past events, leading to better descriptions of real-world phenomena than their integer-order counterparts. From this perspective, the systems modelling and control of FO with applications of real-world problems is of key significance. Despite the extraordinary advances in FC, new theoretical developments and applications are still needed to accurately describe or control many systems and signals characterized by chaos, bifurcations, criticality, symmetry, memory, scale invariance, fractality, fractionality, and other rich features

The publication focuses on traditional constants and new meanings of the body in a constantly dynamically changing world. From different disciplinary approaches, subjectivising perspectives of being-a-body as well as functional perspectives of having-a-body are discussed in relation to current questions of movement and sport pedagogical theory, empiricism and practice

Abstract: Sigfried Giedion (1888-1968), one of the main protagonists of the architectural avant-garde in Europe, paradoxically achieved this reputation in America, far from his homeland. Nearly all of Giedion's books written after his initial stay at Harvard University were published in English long before they became available in his native German. Reto Geiser sheds new light on Giedion's life and reassesses his work through the lens of cultural transformation and modernization processes. The author questions the unbroken line of developments portrayed in the historiography of modern architecture, and argues that Giedion's position in between two cultural spheres not only caused ruptures and contradictions in his work but also productively shaped its reception on either side of the Atlantic

Abstract: The book is primarily addressed to cultural managers, employees of cultural institutions, cultural animators, impresarios, and independent artists who independently disseminate their work, especially in the Polish-Czech cross-border market for cultural services. Potential audiences also include students, doctoral students, and academics working in the management of cultural institutions, cross-border cooperation, or international relations. The work may also be of use to city and regional leaders in the Polish-Czech borderland, for whom cooperation 'across borders' in the field of culture represents a potential opportunity for the development of the cultural offer, urban or regional infrastructure, and better promotion of the cross-border area. ``Central European territories have been historically exposed to innumerable social, economic, political, and cultural influences. Moreover, these territories have been crisscrossed by dozens of national, administrative, and cultural boundaries. This book, which deals primarily with cultural aspects of the Polish-Czech borderland naturally, reflects these facts. Moreover, it investigates the cross-border market for cultural services that represents a modern but not adequately researched theme. There is no doubt about the theoretical and practical importance of this book, which will definitely attract many readers.'' Professor Jan Sucháček -- Mendel University in Brno (The Czech Republic) ``The book guides the reader through the interdisciplinarity and complexity of shaping long-term relationships of cultural operators with Polish and Czech recipients of the cultural offer in the Polish-Czech cross-border market. Understanding such relationships is critical for achieving great performance in the whole cross-border market of cultural services, and the book offers the readers well-structured and useful knowledge in this regard. This book is a must-read for all cultural managers and policymakers.'' Professor Mateusz Lewandowski -- Jagiellonian University in Kraków (Poland)

Abstract: In December 2022, Japan announced it would drastically increase its defence budget by 2027. The decision came as a wake-up call for the whole region: Japan was gearing up for a world of heightened tensions and rivalry in the Indo-Pacific Region. This Report analyses the present and future of Japan's security and defence policies. Within the context of a rising China, Tokyo has broadened its defence ties with the US, India, Australia, and Taiwan. However, China remains its biggest trading partner, meaning Tokyo's policymakers are charged with the task and challenge of striking a balance between defence policies and business and trade relations with China

Abstract: Inheritance law, a branch of private law, is concerned with regulating the transfer of property and rights belonging to a deceased individual to his or her heirs. This process, known as succession mortis causa, has as its main objective to harmonize the freedom of testamentary disposition of the deceased with the safeguarding of the forced heirs, those who are legally entitled to receive a portion of the inheritance. Within the scope of inheritance law, normative provisions are established governing the distribution of assets, as well as the criteria for the validity and formality of wills. In addition, the legitimate shares are defined, which represent the portions of the inheritance destined to be compulsorily reserved for the forced heirs. This branch of law plays a fundamental role in guaranteeing a fair and equitable distribution of the assets and rights of a deceased person, while protecting the rights of the forced heirs and respecting the testamentary will of the deceased

Abstract: This volume includes the proceedings of a conference held at the Department of Historical Studies of the University of Milan and realised within the framework of the PRIN 2017 project Italian Scholars in the face of the Race Laws (1938-1945): Ancient Historians and Jurists. The conference favoured the dialogue between specialists of various backgrounds and aimed mainly at exposing the complex relations between the political use (or, rather, abuse) of ancient history by fascism, together with the theoretical aberrations that led to the formulation of the Manifesto degli scienziati razzisti, with specific focus on anti-Semitism. Despite the diversity of approaches, the essays help to clarify how the heritage of the ancient world was connected to the racial issue with a double perspective: on the one hand, the anxious search for illustrious roots for modern anti-Semitism; on the other hand, the alleged and pretentious primacy of the 'Italic race' over other nations, by virtue of its glorious past. We hope that this choral work will contribute to a deeper interpretation of the cultural background that saw the deadly virus of racism take root in Italy

Abstract: Víctor Tau Anzoátegui (1933-2022) was one of the most outstanding legal historians in Argentina. From a very young age he chose to dedicate himself to historical research, forming and being part of the renewal of his discipline since the 1950s. Dr. Tau's academic career went beyond the borders of his native country and he became an international reference together with Antonio Manuel Hespanha, Bartolomé Clavero and Paolo Grossi. With them, among others, he shared and was part of the critical history of law. His book Casuismo y Sistema. Indagación histórica sobre el espíritu del Derecho Indiano is one of the many works of reference that reflected his enormous knowledge of the otherness of the law of past societies. This tribute book brings together outstanding researchers who, based on various postulates of Víctor Tau, face and continue the task carried out, not only by a historian of law, but also by a true master for several generations of historians

Abstract: The volume focuses on the political and economic relations between the Kingdoms of Naples and Sicily and the Dutch Republic in Eighteenth century. The starting point is the commercial treaty signed by the two States in 1753. Thanks to various Neapolitan and Dutch sources, the study reconstructs the political and commercial interests that underpinned the agreement, highlighting the importance of the relationships with Dutch Republic in Charles of Bourbon's "politica dei trattati". Through the analysis of the relations between a modest Mediterranean State and a mercantilist Power of the time (albeit in decline), the volume explores the Neapolitan "strategy" to find its own space amidst the clashes between the major commercial Powers of the period. By exanimating the impact of commercial treaty on the Dutch trades in Southern Italy, the book provides an initial approach to studying economic exchanges between the Dutch Republic and Naples. This lays the groundwork for a broader understanding of the relationships between Southern Italy and Northern Europe in the Eighteenth century, a topic on which much remains to be explored

Abstract: This volume contains the proceedings of the Study Conference held on June 15 and 16, 2023, at the Citadel of Museums in Cagliari, at the conclusion of the two-year research project TALKING STONES. Society and culture in Sardinia through the analysis of stone materials. An interdisciplinary path from ancient times to the present day, across archaeology, architecture, art and literature, funded by the Sardinia Foundation (annuality 2020).The project was conceived from the outset with an interdisciplinary approach in reference to a theme, that of stone, and a territory, Sardinia, that have united the activities of the research group. Stone, in fact, has marked and overwhelmingly marks the island territory, its cultural manifestations and related literary and artistic productions. It is the history of the island itself that highlights the indissoluble bond between man and stone. A bond that is strongly felt in the different historical periods, both in the daily experience of the individual and in a broader perspective as an instrument capable of conveying cultural and identity elements. The various stone works become a symbol of the populations occupying the island, as evidenced, for example, by the Nuragic fortresses, which still maintain the status of a true cultural marker of the territory. The volume is intended to serve as a point of arrival for research that is nearing completion, but at the same time it is hoped that it will also serve as a starting point for future projects on a topic of manifold potential

Abstract: The water environment serves as the foundation for numerous habitats and ecosystems. The discharge and accumulation of pollutants can disrupt the balance of aquatic ecosystems, leading to species extinction, ecological disruptions, and direct or indirect impacts on human health. Against the backdrop of the global carbon peak and carbon neutrality, controlling water pollution has become increasingly important. Within the broad framework of "water environment pollution and control," this Special Issue aims to provide essential knowledge and establish a solid scientific foundation for the control and management of water pollution by studying the environmental behavior and bioavailability of various pollutants. It can serve as a scientific basis for developing effective pollution prevention and control strategies, and can provide guidance for establishing a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment. We believe the reprint of "Water Environment Pollution and Control" will offer readers comprehensive and in depth knowledge, thereby promoting further research in the field of water environment pollution and control

Abstract: DATAPOLIS looks into the materiality of data, its inherent ethical and political contradictions as well as cultural and environmental footprints, by following two main trajectories: the first one attempts to define what 'the cloud' is and how it operates. From the systems and infrastructures behind the Internet to the apparatus, gizmos and buildings that can transcend scales and temporal dimensions. The second one explores how data penetrates our existence, not only by affecting the ways we live and work, or design and make cities, but by offering distinct ways of life and organization that otherwise would not have been possible.Through various visual and textual materials, this book speculates on the ways in which architecture can engage with data and digital technology beyond its mere instrumental use in making (smart) cities.DATAPOLIS is edited by Paul Cournet and Negar Sanaan Bensi. With contributions by Kees Kaan, Kate Crawford, Shannon Mattern, Ruha Benjamin, Marina Otero Verzier and Joost Grootens a.o.The most complete version of this work was published in 2023 by nai010

Abstract: An inquiry into how livestreaming can help us meaningfully connectLivestreaming is ubiquitous in our Covid-19-inflected era. In this book, EL Putnam takes up the implications of this technology, arguing that livestreamed internet broadcasts perform aesthetic and ethical encounters that invite distinctive means of relating to others. Treating humans and technologies as inherently relational, Putnam considers how livestreaming constitutes new patterns of being together that are complex, ambivalent, and transformative. Understood in such a way, we see how livestreaming exceeds quantifying and calculating metrics, challenges emphasis on content generation, and introduces an entirely new-and dynamic-means of social engagement
