    Abstract: This collection of essays is arranged around the central issue raised by a raft of new empirical research - the relationship between social identity, or the 'vision of the self', and the ways in which this can explain historical agency. If identities in early modern society were multiple, complex, and dependent on context, rather than homogenous, consistent, or easily determined, then it is difficult to make simple causal links to behaviour. This collection aims to make innovative new research on the structures of English society available to the wider scholarly audience. The essays use a number of detailed contextual case studies to explore the twin themes of the nature of identities in early modern society, and their role in influencing historical agency.     Abstract: This book is a discourse analysis of a series of interviews with women and couples who have had IVF unsuccessfully and who have subsequently stopped treatment. Taking a feminist approach, the book argues that treatment failure produces an ongoing and profoundly gendered burden of discursive work which is oriented towards locating the self, and the engagement with IVF, as 'normal'.

Gemeinhin wird damit eine "Freiheit der Entscheidung" bezeichnet - uneingeschränkte Bevorzugung des einen vor dem anderen. Dies gilt nur vordergründig, da jede Wahl sich notwendig auf eine Unterscheidung stützt: Nur was zuvor Bedeutung gewinnt (als wählbar erscheint), kann nachträglich als Wahlversprechen gelten. Wie nicht zuletzt der Beitrag von Niklas Luhmann verdeutlicht, ist hier ein Paradox am Werk: Die "Freiheit der Wahl" braucht eine Einschränkung - und erhält damit Selektionscharakter. Sie beinhaltet ein (Aus-)Gewähltes und ein Aussortiertes; eine Kehrseite des Prozesses, der für sich eine Freiheit beansprucht. Da diese Differenz nicht auf die Objektseite (das Gewählte) reduzierbar ist, sondern den Zugriff selbst (mit-)bestimmt, ist der synonyme Gebrauch von "Freiheit" und "Wahl" zu problematisieren. Dies versucht der Band in struktureller Standortbestimmung sowie spezifisch für die Felder Kunst, Literatur und Medien zu leisten.

    Abstract: This book explores the contemporary nature of Max Weber's work by looking in detail at his key concepts of rationalization and disenchantment. Thematic parallels are drawn between Weber's rationalization thesis and the critiques of contemporary culture developed by Jean-Francois Lyotard, Michel Foucault and Jean Baudrillard. It is suggested that these three 'postmoden' thinkers develop and respond to Weber's analysis of modernity by pursuing radical strategies of affirmation and re-enchantment. Examining the work of these three key thinkers in this way casts new light both on postmodern theory and on Weber's sociology of rationalization.
