    Abstract: This volume examines the ways in which bodies, lived and imagined, were implicated in issues of cosmic order and social organisation in Graeco-Roman antiquity. It focuses on the body in performance (especially in a rhetorical context), the erotic body, the dressed body, pagan and Christian bodies as well as divine bodies and animal bodies. The articles draw on a range of evidence and approaches, cover a broad chronological and geographical span, and explore the ways bodies can transgress and dissolve, as well shore up, or even create, boundaries and hierarchies.

    Abstract: The horrific tragedies of Central Africa in the 1990s riveted the attention of the world. But these crises did not occur in a historical vacuum. By peering through the mists of the past, the case studies presented in The Land Beyond the Mists illustrate the significant advances to have taken place since decolonization in our understanding of the pre-colonial histories of Rwanda, Burundi, and eastern Congo. Based on both oral and written sources, these essays are important both for their methods-viewing history from the perspective of local actors-and for their conclusions, which seriously challenge colonial myths about the area

    Abstract: In the midst of the violent, revolutionary turmoil that accompanied the last decade of tsarist rule in the Russian Empire, many Jews came to reject what they regarded as the apocalyptic and utopian prophecies of political dreamers and religious fanatics, preferring instead to focus on the promotion of cultural development in the present. Jewish Public Culture in the Late Russian Empire examines the cultural identities that Jews were creating and disseminating through voluntary associations such as libraries, drama circles, literary clubs, historical societies, and even fire brigades. Jeffrey Veidlinger explores the venues in which prominent cultural figures -- including Sholem Aleichem, Mendele Moykher Sforim, and Simon Dubnov -- interacted with the general Jewish public, encouraging Jewish expression within Russia's multicultural society. By highlighting the cultural experiences shared by Jews of diverse social backgrounds -- from seamstresses to parliamentarians -- and in disparate geographic locales -- from Ukrainian shtetls to Polish metropolises -- the book revises traditional views of Jewish society in the late Russian Empire.

    Abstract: "Larvatus prodeo," announced René Descartes at the beginning of the seventeenth century: "I come forward, masked." Deliberately disguising or silencing their most intimate thoughts and emotions, many early modern Europeans besides Descartes-princes, courtiers, aristocrats and commoners alike-chose to practice the shadowy art of dissimulation. For men and women who could not risk revealing their inner lives to those around them, this art of incommunicativity was crucial, both personally and politically. Many writers and intellectuals sought to explain, expose, justify, or condemn the emergence of this new culture of secrecy, and from Naples to the Netherlands controversy swirled for two centuries around the powers and limits of dissimulation, whether in affairs of state or affairs of the heart. This beautifully written work crisscrosses Europe, with a special focus on Italy, to explore attitudes toward the art of dissimulation in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Discussing many canonical and lesser-known works, Jon R. Snyder examines the treatment of dissimulation in early modern treatises and writings on the court, civility, moral philosophy, political theory, and in the visual arts.

    Abstract: "The model I have drawn here attempts to accommodate both time and space. It may appear similar to the more old-fashioned 'Chinese world order, ' and indeed there are some similarities, but that older model failed to account for change over time and was, first and foremost, concerned with diplomatic relations. The model of the Sinosphere attempts to embrace intraregional relations in all their varying cultural and political complexities. The nature of Sino-Japanese ties may have been altogether different in the last third of the nineteenth century from what they were within the Sinosphere, but memory of the bond that had long linked China and Japan, I would argue, remained, if only as a lingering recollection.     Abstract: Germans into Jews turns to an often overlooked and misunderstood period of German and Jewish history-the years between the world wars. It has been assumed that the Jewish community in Germany was in decline during the Weimar Republic. But, Sharon Gillerman demonstrates that Weimar Jews sought to rejuvenate and reconfigure their community as a means both of strengthening the German nation and of creating a more expansive and autonomous Jewish entity within the German state. These ambitious projects to increase fertility, expand welfare, and strengthen the family transcended the ideological and religious divisions that have traditionally characterized Jewish communal life. Integrating Jewish history, German history, gender history, and social history, this book highlights the experimental and contingent nature of efforts by Weimar Jews to reassert a new Jewish particularism while simultaneously reinforcing their commitment to Germanness.

    Abstract: Images of war, narratives of suffering and notions of ethnicity are intrinsically linked to Western perceptions of Africa. Filtered through a mostly international media the information of African wars is confined to narrow categories of explanation emerging from and adapted to a Western history and political culture. This book aims at reversing this process; to look at war and suffering from the point of view of those who fight it and suffer through it. In doing so it reveals that the simplistic models explaining contemporary wars in Africa which are reproduced in a Western discourse are basically false. This book examines the understanding of war and the impact of warfare on the formation and conceptualisation of identities in Ethiopia. Building on historical trajectories of enemy images, the recent Eritean-Ethiopian war [1998-2000] is used as an empirical backdrop to explore war's formative impact, by analysing politics of identity and shifting perceptions of enemies and allies. KJETIL TRONVOLL is Professor in Human Rights, Peace and Conflict Studies at the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights, University of Oslo. His other publications include 'Brothers at War: Making Sense of the Eritrean-Ethiopian War' (co-author; James Currey/Ohio University Press, 2000) and 'The Ethiopian Red Terror Trials: Transitional Justice Challenged' (co-editor; James Currey 2009).

Im Ergebnis stellt sich das Feld sozialer Beziehungen und deren kommunikative Seite im Mittelalter als äußerst vielfältig und verschieden dar. Den Schlüssel zum Verständnis sozialer Lebens- und Kommunikationsformen im Mittelalter bieten insgesamt die in diesen wirksamen Wahrnehmungs- und Deutungsmuster, die auf diese Weise die Grundlage sinngeleiteter Weltbegegnung und -gestaltung bilden.

    Abstract: The different written and archaeological sources give a very heterogeneous picture of the social and religious structures in Eastern Middle Europe. Recent developments in modern archaeological and historical research have shown new approaches to the analysis of elites. In every society there is a leading minority, who cumulates both wealth and prestige and is characterized by an elevated social rank, reputation and acceptance. An external marker of these elites is especially the superregional transfer of certain items, but also of the culturally encoded value systems. The present study asks whether this notion of cultural transfer, developed in the context of modern history, can be applied as well to the study of mutual influences between the elites of medieval Western and Eastern Middle Europe. It also raises the question if this terminology is equally useful for the analysis of written and material sources, and to what extent it might open a new perspective on the rich but as yet often unexplored history of the lands east of the Elbe river.〈p〉So unterschiedlich Schriftquellen und Bodenfunde des östlichen Mitteleuropas auch Zeugnis ablegen, so stimmen sie darin überein, ein sehr heterogenes Bild von der inneren gesellschaftlichen und religiösen Struktur der gentes zu liefern. Die gegenwärtige Entwicklung in der Archäologie und Geschichtswissenschaft zeigt neue Betrachtungsweisen in der Untersuchung von Eliten. In jeder Gesellschaft existiert eine Reichtum und Prestige auf sich ziehende führende Minderheit: Sie wird durch eine hohe soziale Position gekennzeichnet, aber auch durch Ansehen und Anerkennung. Als äußeres Kennzeichen der Eliten zeichnet sich dabei besonders der überregionale Transfer einzelner Güter und ihrer kulturell kodierten Wertsysteme ab. Doch eignet sich die eigentlich an neuzeitlichen Verhältnissen entwickelte Vorstellung des Kulturtransfers auch zur Untersuchung wechselseitiger Beeinflussungen der Eliten des westlichen und östlichen Mitteleuropas im Mittelalter? Ist es gleichermaßen für die Untersuchung schriftlicher wie materieller Quellen geeignet? Öffnet es einen neuen Blick auf die reiche, überbordende und zugleich noch vielfach verschlossene Geschichte des Raumes östlich der Elbe?

    Abstract: Inventing the Jew follows the evolution of stereotypes of Jews from the level of traditional Romanian and other Central-East European cultures (their legends, fairy tales, ballads, carols, anecdotes, superstitions, and iconographic representations) to that of "high" cultures (including literature, essays, journalism, and sociopolitical writings), showing how motifs specific to "folkloric antisemitism" migrated to "intellectual antisemitism." This comparative perspective also highlights how the images of Jews have differed from that of other "strangers" such as Hungarians, Germans, Roma, Turks, Armenians, and Greeks. The gap between the conception of the "imaginary Jew" and the "real Jew" is a cultural distance that differs over time and place, here seen through the lens of cultural anthropology.

    Abstract: This collection of essays examines the politicization and the politics of the Jewish people in the Russian empire during the late tsarist period. The focal point is the Russian revolution of 1905, when the political mobilization of the Jewish youth took on massive proportions, producing a cohort of radicalized activists - committed to socialism, nationalism, or both - who would exert an extraordinary influence on Jewish history in the twentieth-century in Eastern Europe, the United States, and Palestine. Frankel describes the dynamics of 1905 and the leading role of the intelligentsia as revolutionaries, ideologues, and observers. But, elsewhere, he also looks backwards to the emergent stage of modern Jewish politics in both Russia and the West and forward to the part played by the veterans of 1905 in Palestine and the United States

    Abstract: In one form or another, slavery has existed throughout the world for millennia. It helped to change the world, and the world transformed the institution. In the 1450s, when Europeans from the small corner of the globe least enmeshed in the institution first interacted with peoples of other continents, they created, in the Americas, the most dynamic, productive, and exploitative system of coerced labor in human history. Three centuries later these same intercontinental actions produced a movement that successfully challenged the institution at the peak of its dynamism. Within another century a new surge of European expansion constructed Old World empires under the banner of antislavery. However, twentieth-century Europe itself was inundated by a new system of slavery, larger and more deadly than its earlier system of New World slavery. This book examines these dramatic expansions and contractions of the institution of slavery and the impact of violence, economics, and civil society in the ebb and flow of slavery and antislavery during the last five centuries

    Abstract: Heroes and Victims explores the cultural power of war memorials in 20th-century Romania through two world wars and a succession of radical political changes-from attempts to create pluralist democratic political institutions after World War I to shifts toward authoritarian rule in the 1930s, to military dictatorships and Nazi occupation, to communist dictatorships, and finally to pluralist democracies with populist tendencies. Examining the interplay of centrally articulated and locally developed commemorations, Maria Bucur's study engages monumental sites of memory, local funerary markers, rituals, and street names as well as autobiographical writings, novels, oral narratives, and film. This book reveals the ways in which a community's religious, ethnic, economic, regional, and gender traditions shaped local efforts at memorializing its war dead

    Abstract: The interchange between Muslims and Europe has a long and complicated history, dating back to before the idea of 'Europe' was born, and the earliest years of Islam. There has been a Muslim presence on the European continent before, but never has it been so significant, particularly in Western Europe. With more Muslims in Europe than in many countries of the Muslim world, they have found themselves in the position of challenging what it means to be a European in a secular society of the 21st century. At the same time, the European context has caused many Muslims to re-think what is essential to them in religious terms in their new reality. In this work, H.A. Hellyer analyses the prospects for a European future where pluralism is accepted within unified societies, and the presence of a Muslim community that is of Europe, not simply in it.

    Abstract: While much has been written upon Social Darwinism, the historical impact of Darwinism upon theories of war and human aggression has been sadly neglected. This book is the first to study this discourse in depth. It challenges the received view that Darwinism generated essentially aggressive and warlike social values and pugnacious images of humankind.     Abstract: Written by a senior scholar and master mariner, Sailors and Traders is the first comprehensive account of the maritime peoples of the Pacific. It focuses on the sailors who led the exploration and settlement of the islands and New Zealand and their seagoing descendants, providing along the way new material and unique observations on traditional and commercial seagoing against the background of major periods in Pacific history. The book begins by detailing the traditions of sailors, a group whose way of life sets them apart. Like all others who live and work at sea, Pacific mariners face the challenges of an often harsh environment, endure separation from their families for months at a time, revere their vessels, and share a singular attitude to risk and death. The period of prehistoric seafaring is discussed using archaeological data, interpretations from inter island exchanges, experimental voyaging, and recent DNA analysis. Sections on the arrival of foreign exploring ships centuries later concentrate on relations between visiting sailors and maritime communities. The more intrusive influx of commercial trading and whaling ships brought new technology, weapons, and differences in the ethics of trade. The successes and failures of Polynesian chiefs who entered trading with European-type ships are recounted as neglected aspects of Pacific history. As foreign-owned commercial ships expanded in the region so did colonialism, which was accompanied by an increase in the number of sailors from metropolitan countries and a decrease in the employment of Pacific islanders on foreign ships. Eventually small-scale island entrepreneurs expanded inter island shipping, and in 1978 the regional Pacific Forum Line was created by newly independent states. This was welcomed as a symbolic return to indigenous Pacific ocean linkages. The book's final sections detail the life of the modern Pacific seafarer. Most Pacific sailors in the global maritime labor market return home after many months at sea, bringing money, goods, a wider perspective of the world, and sometimes new diseases. Each of these impacts is analyzed, particularly in the case of Kiribati, a major supplier of labor to foreign ships

    Abstract: Vom 19. Jahrhundert als einer Mediengesellschaft zu sprechen, erscheint als ein Anachronismus. Der Begriff sucht den Bedeutungsgewinn und die Diversifizierung der Medien in der Gegenwart zu erfassen und damit nicht zuletzt heutige von früheren Gesellschaften abzugrenzen. Die Annahme, dass Medien in früheren Gesellschaften nicht ebenfalls eine zentrale und spezifische Rolle zukam, wäre jedoch irrig. So war das 19. Jahrhundert nicht nur vom Aufstieg einer Vielzahl einstmals neuer Medien geprägt, sondern auch dadurch, dass sich die Gesellschaft über öffentliche und mediale Kommunikation erst konstituierte und ausdifferenzierte. Der Band macht es sich zur Aufgabe, ineinander greifende zentrale mediale und gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen für Deutschland und für Frankreich in einer übergreifenden wie vergleichenden Perspektive vorzustellen..

    Abstract: With the expansion of the EU and calls for a European constitution, the question of a common European identity has become increasingly pressing in recent times. However, in the face of diverse national and regional traditions - and the absence of an obvious European cultural imaginary - the forging of a strong sense of European identity proves problematic. This volume brings together case studies of national and regional images from across Europe, which together suggest emerging patterns of identification within contemporary Europe - patterns which may not necessarily amount to a European 'identity', but rather to a European 'mode' of identification. The chronological structure of the volume demonstrates the increasingly problematic nature of national collective memories and past imaginaries in light of emergent marginal voices and images, and suggests that it is both from beyond and within the national paradigm that new challenges are now reshaping the cultural imaginary of European communities. Focusing on cultural images within film, literature, national narratives and myths, museum exhibitions and architecture, this volume is of interest to a wide variety of disciplines in the humanities, and presents an interdisciplinary approach to questions of cultural memory and identity formation.

    Abstract: Intending Scotland reconsiders our understanding of the development of Scottish culture from the Enlightenment to the present day. The book recovers and reconnects Scottish thinkers from Hume and Reid in the eighteenth century, to Andrew Seth, Norman Kemp Smith and John Macmurray in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It contextualises their work in relation to the development of Scottish anthropology and psychology, from which emerged, in the work of Ian Suttie and R. D. Laing, some of the most significant challenges to Freudian psychology. Craig uses this Scottish tradition to challenge theories of the nation over the last thirty years, providing critiques of Bhabha's 'hybridity' and of Anderson's 'imagined community', and of theories of 'the Other' within a postcolonial framework. Ranging over Scotland's intellectual and cultural history across three centuries, taking in gardens and gardeners as well as historians and historiographers, scientists and engineers as well as philosophers and psychologists, Intending Scotland presents a reinterpretation of Scottish cultural life as radical as the developments in the nation's contemporary politics. Key debates addressed in Intending Scotland include: *Challenges negative conceptions of the Scottish cultural past and of the failures of Scotland's cultural development *Sets Scotland's recent political development in the context of its cultural achievements in the twentieth century *Deals with major figures in Scottish culture - Hume, Reid - and shows how our modern understanding of them is dependent on the work of later Scottish thinkers *Engages with prominent critics in contemporary theory - Anderson, Derrida, Bhabha, Kearney - and develops a critique of them from a Scottish perspective.

    Abstract: Die Dobrudscha am Schwarzen Meer, ein seit der griechischen Antike bekannter Kulturraum mit einer Fläche von knapp 23.000 qkm, der heute zu mehr als zwei Dritteln zu Rumänien und zu knapp einem Drittel zu Bulgarien gehört, ist seit dem Beitritt dieser beiden Länder zur Euopäischen Union (EU) am 1. Januar 2007 ein neuer Grenzraum der EU geworden. Dort sind Politik und Verwaltung auf lokaler Ebene mit zahlreichen Problemen konfrontiert, die teilweise typisch für Transformationsstaaten sind, teilweise aber auch der spezifischen regionalen Situation geschuldet sind. Insbesondere vier Problembereiche sind zu nennen, die im Rahmen einer internationalen Tagung im September 2007 in Konstanza (Constanta) am Schwarzen Meer (Rumänien) erörtert wurden: die sozioökonomische, die ethnische, die politisch-geographische und die ökologische Situation. Die Beiträge dieser Tagung, von denen die meisten in den vorliegenden Band aufgenommen sind, vermitteln aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln ein vielschichtiges Bild dieser Region, deren aktuelle Probleme oft auch auf widersprüchliche Auffassungen verschiedener Interessengruppen zurückzuführen sind.
