Abstract: As the power and sophistication of of 'big data' and predictive analytics has continued to expand, so too has policy and public concern about the use of algorithms in contemporary life. This is hardly surprising given our increasing reliance on algorithms in daily life, touching policy sectors from healthcare, transport, finance, consumer retail, manufacturing education, and employment through to public service provision and the operation of the criminal justicesystem. This has prompted concerns about the need and importance of holding algorithmic power to account, yet it is far from clear that existing legal and other oversight mechanisms are up to the task. This collection of essays, edited by two leading regulatory governance scholars, offers a critical0exploration of 'algorithmic regulation', understood both as a means for co-ordinating and regulating social action and decision-making, as well as the need for institutional mechanisms through which the power of algorithms and algorithmic systems might themselves be regulated. It offers a unique perspective that is likely to become a significant reference point for the ever-growing debates about the power of algorithms in daily life in the worlds of research, policy and practice. The range of contributors are drawn from a broad range of disciplinary perspectives including law, public administration, applied philosophy, data science and artificial intelligence

Abstract: "Singaporeans enjoy one of the longest lifespans in the world today. Singapore is also one of the most rapidly ageing societies in the world. Given these population trends, business and workers, individuals and families will experience significant changes in the way they work, play and organise their lives together. This book is a collection of speeches presented at Singapore Perspectives 2018 by leading thought leaders and eminent speakers on how our economic, political and social institutions can best adapt to and manage a rapidly ageing population. Contributors to this book tackle the urgent need to shape mind-sets, policies and decisions today for the best outcomes for current and future generations."--

Abstract: "This interesting book is a compilation of the lectures and discussions held during a four-day event - Grand Challenges for Science in the 21st Century - organized by Para Limes at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. The elite group of speakers included Nobel laureate Sydney Brenner who called on all scientists to adopt a truth-seeking approach and not be afraid of challenging assumptions. The other panellists were Martin Rees, Astronomer Royal and past President of the Royal Society, the much-cited Terrence Sejnowski from the renowned Salk Institute for Biological Studies, the well-known keynote speaker in economics and complexity sciences Brian Arthur, the former President of the European Research Council Helga Nowotny and the Director of the Parmenides Center for the Conceptual Foundations of Science Eors Szathmary. The lively sessions were moderated by the Danish writer Tor Norretranders. The panel tackled topics from evolution and the origin of the universe to modern technologies and artificial intelligence. The challenges presented during the event are bound to get the reader thinking about what may lie ahead in our future."--

Abstract: Americans no longer agree on basic questions of fact. Is climate change real? Does racism still determine who gets ahead? Is sexual orientation innate? Do immigration and free trade help or hurt the economy? Does gun control reduce violence? Employing several years of original survey data and experiments, Marietta and Barker reach a number of enlightening and provocative conclusions: dueling fact perceptions are not so much a product of hyper-partisanship or media propaganda as they are of simple value differences and deepening distrust of authorities.

Abstract: Historians have tended to understand medieval conduct through the eyes of Enlightenment historians, seeing superior conduct as 'knightly' behaviour, categorising it as chivalry. This book shows what superior lay conduct was in Europe before chivalry, and maps how and why chivalry emerged and redefined superior conduct in the late twelfth century.

Chinese Folklore Studies Today aims to address this knowledge gap by illustrating the dynamics of contemporary folklore studies in China as seen through the eyes of the up-and-coming generation of scholars

Abstract: "The idea of a free gift economy has become important in the movement for alternative economics, however the connection with women and especially with mothers has not been widely understood. The conference "The Maternal Roots of the Gift Economy," held in Rome in 2015, brought together women and men from around the world to discuss this important issue. In a moment when the values of Patriarchy and the market seem to have triumphed, the values of mothering and care are more sorely needed than ever. This book explores many aspects of the gift paradigm from a variety of points of view, taking into account theory and practice, activism and spirituality, as well as the experience of Indigenous societies North and South where maternal values are still at the centre for both women and men. Readers will find abundant evidence of ways of thinking and being that are possible beyond the Patriarchal Capitalism that is now threatening the existence of life on Mother Earth."--

Abstract: Keith Tribe's new translation presents Economy and Society as it stood when Max Weber died. One of the world's leading experts on Weber's thought, Tribe has produced a clear and faithful translation that will become the definitive English edition of one of the few indisputably great intellectual works of the past 150 years
Abstract: Max Weber was the foremost social theorist of the twentieth century; Economy and Society is Weber's most famous work after The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. It consists of diverse essays that Weber was working on at the time of his death in 1920, ranging over subjects in economics, politics, religion, public administration, and sociology. The book was first published in German in two parts in the early 1920s, then in a more authoritative edition in the late 1950s. Economy and Society is a classic work of social theory, and is considered the founding text for modern social debates about action, rationality, bureaucracy and charisma, formal and material justice, religious beliefs, and economic conduct. In this new translation of Part I, Keith Tribe, one of the English-speaking world's leading experts on Weber, aims to present the clearest and most faithful translation yet. Tribe's translation is accompanied by commentary and notes that reflect the decades of scholarship that have passed since Guenther Roth and Claus Wittich published their English translation in 1968.--

Abstract: What is an "African American" and how does this identity relate to the African continent? Rising immigration levels, globalization, and the United States' first African American president have all sparked new dialogue around the question. This work provides an introduction to the relationship between African Americans and Africa from the era of slavery to the present, mapping several overlapping diasporas. It examines the diversity of African American identities through relationships with region, ethnicity, slavery, and immigration to investigate questions fundamental to the study of African American history and culture but often overlooked

Abstract: In 1995, Toulon became the largest city in Europe to come under the far right since the end of World War II. This book asks what led up to the far right's win; how it governed for six years; and what we learn from mainstream politicians who are keeping it weak. Empire's Legacy delves into a latent far right affinity in French society, traces the deep roots of this affinity, and explains why it has become a factor in French politics.

Abstract: We're Still Here provides powerful, on the ground evidence of the remaking of working-class identity and politics. Drawing on years of fieldwork and over 100 interviews with black, white, and Latino working-class residents of a declining coal town in Pennsylvania, Jennifer M. Silva tells a deep, multi-generational story of pain and politics.

Abstract: In Occupying Schools, Occupying Land, Rebecca Tarlau looks at the Brazilian Landless Workers' Movement over the past thirty-five years to illustrate how social movements can use state services, such as schools, to support their social change goals. Through a detailed ethnographic and long-term examination of the MST's educational struggle, Tarlau shows how educational institutions can in turn help movements build capacity and social influence. This book provides an analysis of how activists convinced government officials to implement these educational practices and how these initiatives strengthened the movement.

Abstract: Myisha Cherry's public philosophy podcast UnMute amplifies the work of diverse philosophers working on issues of contemporary social and political relevance by presenting provocative, stimulating, powerful, and yet relaxed interviews that anyone can understand. Gathering together 31 of these interviews, along with other materials such as illustrations, a "Say What?" glossary, and descriptions of how these thinkers first got into philosophy, the book amplifies this important work even further, inviting readers from backgrounds as wide-ranging as those of the people interviewed.

Abstract: The Marvel of Martyrdom starts large -- with famous and influential martyrs such as Jesus and Gandhi -- and ends small -- with ordinary people whose own experiences of self-sacrifice give martyrdom its political power. Seeking the developmental origins of self-sacrifice, the book explores children's folklore and the success of mega-hits such as The Matrix and Harry Potter. Seeking the everyday rewards of self-sacrifice, the book shows the potential for finding meaning and happiness in helping others.

Abstract: This book explores the reality of what it's like to live adoption-and open adoption specifically. Most people know very little about how contemporary US adoptions "work" - and this book draws back the curtain to reveal the vulnerabilities, strengths, challenges, and daily struggles and triumphs of adoptive families today. It does not shy away from tough subjects, like birth parents' mental illness and racial differences between adoptive parents and their children. It aims to trace the challenging decisions and dynamics that adoptive parents "sign up for" when they pursue open adoption. It also aims to illuminate the unique benefits and joys of open adoption.

Abstract: It's impossible to know exactly what other people are thinking, but if a person has perspective, it can be much easier to have an idea of those thoughts. This volume introduces students to the idea of perspective-taking, or seeing things from another person's point of view. Students will learn that perspective-taking can help them build better relationships with friends and family. They will be better able to resolve conflicts if they're thinking about the other person's thoughts and feelings. They'll develop more empathy for people who have different experiences. This book shows students that through perspective-taking, they'll begin to better understand and accept people who are different from themselves.
