Abstract: Describes the history of slave uprisings and runaway slaves, including the Underground Railroad. The barks of the bloodhounds grew louder as the man ran through the swamps. This was what many slaves had to go through in order to escape to the North. Others received help on the Underground Railroad. Still others fought instead of running. Ann E. Eskridge puts the reader in the midst of the trials and tribulations of these brave Americans.

Abstract: Books in this anthology series focus a wide range of viewpoints onto a single controversial issue, providing in-depth discussions by leading advocates. Articles are printed in their entirety and footnotes and source notes are retained. These books offer the reader not only a full spectrum of dissent on the subject, but also the ability to test the validity of arguments by following up on sources used as evidence. Extensive bibliographies and annotated lists of relevant organizations to contact offer a gateway to further research. This series provides a quick grounding in the issues, a challenge to critical thinking skills, and an excellent research tool in each inexpensive volume.

Abstract: Not everyone who came to America and who had a significant impact on the world we know today arrived by choice. In this title, students will learn what life was like for these forced immigrants to a hostile land. They will also learn how these enslaved people held on to their dignity and traditions against all odds, under the worst possible conditions. All this is illustrated through compelling primary source imagery and documents.

Abstract: Acclaimed historian Jerrold Packard brings fresh light to the most horrifying chapter in the nation's history since the end of slavery itself. For most of the century following the Civil War, a quarter of the nation lived under Jim Crow, a system of legalized segregation that governed nearly every element of life bearing on the relations between the races. Its function was simple: to force black submission to the perceived racial superiority of the white majority. Rivaling South Africa's apartheid in the humiliation and degradation of a people, the scars of Jim Crow are still felt on the American psyche. Having written seven wide-ranging works of nonfiction, Packard brings a practiced historian's viewpoint to a phenomenon that surpasses credulity. Though America has consigned Jim Crow to the ignominy it deserves, Packard shows why it is important that this man-made plague never be allowed to leave the nation's collective memory
Abstract: A groundbreaking new look at the history of segregation, from the Reconstruction to the Civil Rights movement. For a hundred years after the end of the Civil War, a quarter of all Americans lived under a system of legalized segregation called Jim Crow. Together with its rigidly enforced canon of racial "etiquette," these rules governed nearly every aspect of life-and outlined draconian punishments for infractions. The purpose of Jim Crow was to keep African Americans subjugated at a level as close as possible to their former slave status. Exceeding even South Africa's notorious apartheid in the humiliation, degradation, and suffering it brought, Jim Crow left scars on the American psyche that are still felt today. American Nightmare examines and explains Jim Crow from its beginnings to its end: how it came into being, how it was lived, how it was justified, and how, at long last, it was overcome only a few short decades ago
Abstract: Most importantly, this book reveals how a nation founded on principles of equality and freedom came to enact as law a pervasive system of inequality and virtual slavery. Although America has finally consigned Jim Crow to the historical graveyard, Jerrold Packard shows why it is important that this scourge, and an understanding of how it happened, remain alive in the nation's collective memory

Abstract: This volume sketches the complex evolution of slavery and black society from the first arrivals in the early 1600s through the American Revolution. Today most Americans, black and white, identify slavery with cotton, the deep South, and the African-American church. But at the beginning of the nineteenth century, after almost two hundred years of African-American life in mainland North America, few slaves grew cotton, lived in the deep South, or embraced Christianity. The author demonstrates that earlier North American slavery had many different forms and meanings that varied over time and from place to place. He shows that slavery and race did not have a fixed character that endured for centuries but were constantly being constructed or reconstructed in response to changing historical circumstances. This work illustrates that complex nature of American slavery, the falsity of many of our stereotypes, and the unique world wrought by the slaves themselves.
