    Abstract: "This book proposes a framework for comparative analysis of the relation between the media and the political system. Building on a survey of media institutions in eighteen West European and North American democracies, Hallin and Mancini identify the principal dimensions of variation in media systems and the political variables that have shaped their evolution. They go on to identify three major models of media system development, the Polarized Pluralist, Democratic Corporatist, and Liberal models; to explain why the media have played a different role in politics in each of these systems; and to explore the force of change that are currently transforming them. It provides a key theoretical statement about the relation between media and political systems, a key statement about the methodology of comparative analysis in political communication, and a clear overview of the variety of media institutions that have developed in the West, understood within their political and historical context."--Jacket

    Abstract: Das 20. Jahrhundert ist oft als das Jahrhundert der Gewalt bezeichnet worden. Daher mangelt es nicht an Gewaltphänomenen, die es genauer zu untersuchen gilt, als dies bislang geschehen ist. In diesem Band werden deswegen Gewalttaten aus neuen Perspektiven untersucht, neue Interpretationen ihrer Entstehung vorgestellt und neue Herausforderungen der sozialwissenschaftlichen Gewaltforschung debattiert. Folgende Fragen werden unter anderem in diesem gesellschaftspolitisch folgenreichen Buch behandelt: Kann der lange dominierende Begriff der physischen Gewalt überhaupt noch leitend sein, und muß die Gewaltanalyse sich nicht wieder stärker der strukturellen Gewalt zuwenden, da zunehmend eine »Gewalt ohne Gesicht« auftritt? Stecken die Ursachen im Gewalthandeln selbst, so daß Hinweise auf soziale Hintergründe etwa in die Irre führen? Verlieren sozialwissenschaftliche Forschungen aufgrund neuer biologischer Ansätze völlig an Relevanz? Biographische Informationen Wilhelm Heitmeyer, geboren 1945, war von 1996 bis 2013 Direktor des Instituts für interdisziplinäre Konflikt- und Gewaltforschung der Universität Bielefeld und arbeitet dort jetzt als Forschungsprofessor. In der edition suhrkamp gab er u. a. die Reihe Deutsche Zustände heraus.     Abstract: "The concept of equalization labour is a measure of the degree of community, solidarity, reciprocity, redistribution, and equalization of the society under consideration. It is determined by a number of methods presented in this study, which also emphasizes the rationality, meanings, properties, and ways of practical implementation of this optimum distribution. This result is compared with the various distributive principles found in practice and in political, philosophical, and economic thinking, with the conclusion that most have their proper specific scope of application. To address these issues, OECD organised a workshop in December 2002, which was hosted by the Japanese Ministry of Environment, in Tokyo. This book contains selected papers presented at this workshop.

    Abstract: Emphasising a positive approach to dealing with terrorism (the carrot), this book provides a critique of deterrence policy (the stick) which can be ineffective and even counterproductive, and proposes three alternative and effective anti-terrorist policies: Decentralisation reduces vulnerability to terrorist attacks. A system with many different centres is more stable due to its diversity, enabling one part to substitute for another; Positive incentives can be offered to actual and prospective terrorists not to engage in violent acts. Incentives include: reintegrating terrorists into society, welcoming repentents and offering them valued opportunities; and Diverting attention by naming several terrorist groups potentially responsible for a particular terrorist act. The government thus supplies more information than the terrorist responsible would wish

    Abstract: Do political decentralisation and inter state competition favour innovation and growth? There has long been a lively debate surrounding this question, going back to David Hume and Immanuel Kant. This book is a new attempt to test its veracity. The existing literature tends to assume that the beneficial effects of inter state competition have been confined to European history. By contrast, China, India and the Islamic Middle East are regarded as inherently imperial and overcentralised. However, these civilisations have not always been unified politically. In their history, there have been long spells of decentralised rule or inter state competition. The same is true for Japan.     Abstract: Institutional Change for Sustainable Development presents a flexible, accessible, yet robust conceptual framework for comprehending institutional dimensions of sustainability, emphasising the complexity of institutional systems, and highlighting the interdependence between policy learning and institutional change. This framework is applied and developed through the analysis of five significant arenas of institutional and policy change: environmental policy in the EU; New Zealand's landmark Resource Management Act; strategic environmental assessment; emerging National Councils for Sustainable Development; and transformative property rights instruments. From these explorations, key principles for institutional change are identified, including the institutional accommodation of a sustainability discourse, the interdependence of normative and institutional change; reiteration and learning; integration in policy and practice; subsidiarity; and legal change
