    Abstract: John Urry has been discussing and writing on these and similar questions for the past fifteen years. In Consuming Places, he gathers together his most significant contributions. Urry begins with an extensive review of the connections between society, time and space. The concept of 'society', the nature of 'locality', the significance of 'economic restructuring', and the concept of the 'rural', are examined in relationship to place. The book then considers how places have been transformed by the development of service occupations and industries. Concepts of the service class and post-industrialism are theoretically and empirically discussed. Attention is then devoted to the ways in which places are consumed. Particular attention is devoted to the visual character of such consumption and its implications for place and people. The implications for nature and the environment are also explored in depth. The changing nature of consumption, and the tensions between commodification and collective enthusiasms, are explored in the context of the changing ways in which the countryside is consumed.

    Abstract: This book proposes an original policy framework for addressing hate speech. Gelber argues that a policy designed to provide support to affected groups and communities to enable them to speak back when hate speech occurs, is a more useful way of addressing the harms of hate speech than punitive measures. She suggests that "speaking back" allows the affected groups to contradict the messages contained in the words of the hate speakers, and to counteract the silencing, disempowering and marginalising effects of hate speech. Gelber's argument uniquely synthesises the ideas of defending the importance of participating in speech, recognising the harms of hate speech and acknowledging that targeted groups may require assistance to respond.

    Abstract: Der Band (mehr noch als "Deutsche und Polen", BA 12/92) hat fast enzyklopädische Ausmaße. Die 80 Beiträge von tschechischen und deutschen Wissenschaftlern und Politikern beziehen sich nicht allein auf "Geschichte, Kultur, Politik", auch auf Wirtschaft, Alltag, Ideologie - fast zuviel des Guten, zumal öfter nur gewaltsam oder gar nicht Parallelen von tschechischer und deutscher Entwicklung thematisiert werden (so bei Betrachtungen über die Caféhaus-Kultur, Fensterstürze, Einwanderungspolitik - abgehandelt am Beispiel der Türken). Meist aber gelingt das Herausarbeiten der spezifischen Bezüge gut, so beim vergleichenden Nachdenken über Feminismus oder Kafkas Verhältnis zu Prag und Berlin. Eine wahre Fundgrube (nach der Devise "für jeden etwas") für am Nachbarland Interessierte, auch Touristen. Nutzbar zugleich - mit "Tschechien, der ferne Nachbar" (BA 8/99) - als Speziallexikon (gut sortiertes Inhaltsverzeichnis, Personenregister), wenngleich der unter dem Patronat der Regensburger Uni entstandene Band auch öfter pathetisch-feierliche Grundtöne aufweist und "Schicksal" ziemlich häufig strapaziert.     Abstract: Die reihenüblich konzentrierte Darstellung beschränkt sich inhaltlich auf die Geschichte der modernen Türkei vom Ende des 1. Weltkriegs bis zur Gegenwart mit ihren innen- und außenpolitischen Problemen (Kurdenfrage, Islamismus, Menschenrechte, Europazugehörigkeit). Steinbach, Leiter des Deutschen Orient-Instituts und ausgewiesener Kenner der Materie, fasst hier noch einmal die Erkenntnisse seines umfangreichen historisch-politischen Länderberichts "Geschichte der Türkei im 20. Jahrhundert" (BA 9/96) zusammen. Der zur Erstinformation geeignete Band ergänzt sich thematisch mit der in derselben Reihe erschienenen "Geschichte des Osmanischen Reiches" von S. Faroqui (BA 6/00).     Abstract: Säkularisation bezeichnet einen Vorgang, der sich in allen Gesellschaften, in denen eine enge Verbindung von Religion und Politik besteht, dauernd vollzieht: Sie ist der historische Prozess der Emanzipation beider Komponenten, im christlich abendländischen Europa die Trennung von Staat und Kirche, vorbereitet im Mittelalter, vollzogen erstmals im Frankreich der Großen Revolution, aber bis heute nicht in allen Teile Europas in letzter Konsequenz. Der emeritierte französische Historiker (Paris-Nanterre, Mitglied der Académie) beschreibt in einem brillant geschriebenen, von J. Grube vorzüglich übersetzten Essay die unterschiedlichen Phasen dieses gesamteuropäischen Prozesses aus der Perspektive der longue durée und lehrt uns, dass Religion nicht zum Randphänomen wurde, sondern in den politisch-ideologischen Kontroversen der letzten 200 Jahre eine zentrale Rolle spielte.
