    Kurzfassung: Commonly portrayed in the media as holding women in strict subordination and deference to men, Islam is nonetheless attracting numerous converts among African American women. Are these women "reproducing their oppression," as it might seem? Or does their adherence to the religion suggest unsuspected subtleties and complexities in the relation of women, especially black women, to Islam? Carolyn Rouse sought answers to these questions among the women of Sunni Muslim mosques in Los Angeles. Her richly textured study provides rare insight into the meaning of Islam for African American women; in particular, Rouse shows how the teachings of Islam give these women a sense of power and control over interpretations of gender, family, authority, and obligations. In Engaged Surrender, Islam becomes a unique prism for clarifying the role of faith in contemporary black women's experience. Through these women's stories, Rouse reveals how commitment to Islam refracts complex processes-urbanization, political and social radicalization, and deindustrialization-that shape black lives generally, and black women's lives in particular. Rather than focusing on traditional (and deeply male) ideas of autonomy and supremacy, the book-and the community of women it depicts-emphasizes more holistic notions of collective obligation, personal humility, and commitment to overarching codes of conduct and belief. A much-needed corrective to media portraits of Islam and the misconceptions they engender, this engaged and engaging work offers an intimate, in-depth look into the vexed and interlocking issues of Islam, gender, and race.

Anders als in den Naturwissenschaften aber ist dem konzeptuellen Stellenwert des Bewegungsbegriffs in den Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften bislang nur wenig Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt worden.Die interdisziplinäre Textsammlung verfolgt das Ziel, den Status quo des Begriffs in den Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften zu reflektieren und sein theoretisches Potenzial zu bestimmen.     Kurzfassung: Romance and Rights: The Politics of Interracial Intimacy, 1945-1954 studies the meaning of interracial romance, love, and sex in the ten years after World War II. How was interracial romance treated in popular culture by civil rights leaders, African American soldiers, and white segregationists? Previous studies focus on the period beginning in 1967 when the Supreme Court overturned the last state antimiscegenation law (Loving v. Virginia). Lubin's study, however, suggests that we cannot fully understand contemporary debates about "hybridity," or mixed-race identity, without first comprehending how WWII changed the terrain. The book focuses on the years immediately after the war, when ideologies of race, gender, and sexuality were being reformulated and solidified in both the academy and the public. Lubin shows that interracial romance, particularly between blacks and whites, was a testing ground for both the general American public and the American government. The government wanted interracial relationships to be treated primarily as private affairs to keep attention off contradictions between its outward aura of cultural freedom and the realities of Jim Crow politics and antimiscegenation laws. Activists, however, wanted interracial intimacy treated as a public act, one that could be used symbolically to promote equal rights and expanded opportunities.

    Kurzfassung: Three paradoxes surround the division of the costs of social reproduction: * Women have entered the paid labour force in growing numbers, but they continue to perform most of the unpaid labour of housework and childcare. * Birth rates have fallen but more and more mothers are supporting children on their own, with little or no assistance from fathers. * The growth of state spending is often blamed on malfunctioning markets, or runaway bureaucracies. But a large percentage of social spending provides substitutes for income transfers that once took place within families. Who Pays for the Kids? explains how this paradoxical situation has arisen. The costs of social reproduction are largely paid by women: men have remained extremely reluctant to pay their share of the costs of raising the next generation. Traditional theories - neo-classical, Marxist and Feminist - can only provide an incomplete account of this, and this book offers an alternative analysis, based on individual choices but within interlocking structures of constraint based on gender, age, sex, nation, race and class.

    Kurzfassung: Die meisten Tätigkeiten werden unbedacht, rein routinemäßig verrichtet. Bei anderen dagegen, von denen Wichtiges, vielleicht das Leben, abhängt, denkt sich der Handelnde etwas, das sein Verhalten dann leitet. Bewußt »sinnlos« würde in derartigen Fällen wohl kaum jemand handeln. Sinnvoll können jedoch nur handlungsleitende Zwecke erscheinen, die auch von anderen als solche verstanden werden. Sinnsysteme sind daher immer Gruppenkonzepte, die Orientierungs- und darum notwendig auch Begründungs- und Präskriptions-, in umstrittenen Fällen zusätzlich Rechtfertigungsfunktionen erfüllen. Das läßt sich besonders deutlich an prämodernen, stark traditionsbestimmt lebenden, d.h. höchstmäßig kohärenten Gesellschaften darstellen. Die Buchbeiträge exemplifizieren das an zwei Haupttypen derartiger Gemeinschafts- und Kulturformen und zeigen anschließend auf, wie unter dem Einfluß stratifizierter, »hochkulturlicher« Sozietäten die alten Sinnsysteme zerfallen, umgedeutet, rekombiniert und neue entwickelt werden - bis hin zur postkolonialen Zeit. Den Abschluß bildet eine allgemeine Entwicklungssystematik und Theorie der Sinntypenkonstituierung. Das Fazit lautet, daß Sinnkonzepte einem Grundbedürfnis sozialer Gruppen entsprechen, Identität begründen und insofern eine fundamentale analytische Bedeutung für das Verständnis gesellschaftlicher Seins- und Lebensauffassungen sowie das Vermögen besitzen, sich erfolgreich mit Konfliktsituationen gerade auch unter den Bedingungen pluralistischer, multikultureller Gesellschaftsformen auseinanderzusetzen

    Kurzfassung: Seit einigen Jahren wird in den Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften international kaum ein Phänomen so lebhaft diskutiert wie das der Globalisierung. Nachdem die zu Anfang vorherrschende Sichtweise von Globalisierung als Entwicklung einer homogenen Weltkultur zunehmend an Evidenz verlor, rücken die lokal unterschiedlichen kulturellen Praktiken und Perspektiven als Teil von Globalisierung ins Zentrum des Interesses. Diese Neujustierung des Fokus erlaubt auch längst überfällige neue Lesarten des vermeintlich einfachen Verhältnisses von »Amerikanisierung« und Globalisierung. Dabei wird deutlich, dass die oft als »Amerikanisierung« wahrgenommene Globalisierung weltweit heterogene Resonanzen erzeugt, hybride Kulturen, Fluchtlinien und Gegenbewegungen treten gleichermaßen hervor. Der Band »Globales Amerika«, in dem sich einige der prominentesten Denker der Globalisierung zu Wort melden, präsentiert anregende Lektüren dieser bislang wenig beleuchteten Seite der Globalisierung und leistet damit einen wichtigen Beitrag zum Verständnis des Problems insgesamt.     Kurzfassung: Sind die Tage der Ethnologie gezählt? Die frisch geschriebene und als Einstieg in die komplexe Thematik »zwischen« den Kulturen geeignete Abhandlung beantwortet diese Frage provokativ mit Ja. Nachdem sie die seit mehr als zehn Jahren virulente Debatte um die Probleme der ethnographischen Repräsentation der »Anderen« markant zusammenfasst, skizziert sie anschließend die Konturen eines neuartigen Denkraums zum Fremdverstehen, den sie in den Cultural Studies als kritische und selbstreflexive, theoretisch und methodisch mutige Grenzgänger-Disziplin-im- Werden ansiedelt. Indem das Fremde nicht mehr außerhalb der eigenen Kultur verortet wird, ebnen sich die traditionellen Gräben zwischen »uns« und »den Anderen« ein, und es entstehen neue Spielfelder einer jungen, engagierten Wissenschaft und Praxis

    Kurzfassung: This book proposes an original policy framework for addressing hate speech. Gelber argues that a policy designed to provide support to affected groups and communities to enable them to speak back when hate speech occurs, is a more useful way of addressing the harms of hate speech than punitive measures. She suggests that "speaking back" allows the affected groups to contradict the messages contained in the words of the hate speakers, and to counteract the silencing, disempowering and marginalising effects of hate speech. Gelber's argument uniquely synthesises the ideas of defending the importance of participating in speech, recognising the harms of hate speech and acknowledging that targeted groups may require assistance to respond.

After the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, recreational drinking became increasingly accepted among white, suburban, middle-class men and women.     Kurzfassung: As new immigrant communities continue to flourish in U.S. cities, their members continually face challenges of assimilation in the organization of their ethnic identities. West Indians provide a vibrant example. In West Indian in the West, Percy Hintzen draws on extensive ethnographic work with the West Indian community in the San Francisco Bay area to illuminate the ways in which social context affects ethnic identity formation. The memories, symbols, and images with which West Indians identify in order to differentiate themselves from the culture which surrounds them are distinct depending on what part of the U.S. they live in. West Indian identity comes to take on different meanings within different locations in the United States. In the San Francisco Bay area, West Indians negotiate their identity within a system of race relations that is shaped by the social and political power of African Americans. By asserting their racial identity as black, West Indians make legal and official claims to resources reserved exclusively for African Americans. At the same time, the West Indian community insulates itself from the problems of the black/white dichotomy in the U.S. by setting itself apart. Hintzen examines how West Indians publicly assert their identity by making use of the stereotypic understandings of West Indians which exist in the larger culture. He shows how ethnic communities negotiate spaces for themselves within the broader contexts in which they live.

    Kurzfassung: Talking at Trena's is an ethnography conducted in a bar in an African American, middle-class neighborhood on Chicago's southside. May's work focuses on how the mostly black, working- and middle-class patrons of Trena's talk about race, work, class, women, relationships, the media, and life in general. May recognizes tavern talk as a form of social play and symbolic performace within the tavern, as well as an indication of the social problems African Americans confront on a daily basis. Following a long tradition of research on informal gathering places, May's work reveals, though close description and analysis of ethnographic data, how African Americans come to understand the racial dynamics of American society which impact their jobs, entertainmentparticularly television programsand their social interactions with peers, employers, and others.     Kurzfassung: In this book, Sarah E. Chinn pulls together what seems to be opposite discourses--the information-driven languages of law and medicine and the subjective logics of racism--to examine how racial identity has been constructed in the United States over the past century. She examines a range of primary social case studies such as the American Red Cross' lamentable decision to segregate the blood of black and white donors during World War II, and its ramifications for American culture, and more recent examples that reveal the racist nature of criminology, such as the recent trial of O.J. Simpson. Among several key American literary texts, she looks at Mark Twain's Pudd'nhead Wilson, a novel whose plot turns on issues of racial identity and which was written at a time when scientific and popular interest in evidence of the body, such as fingerprinting, was at a peak.
