Abstract: "While the trafficking of women for prostitution has been the subject of numerous studies, Prostitution and Human Trafficking is the first book to focus on demand as a key factor in the equation. In order to do this, the editors adopted a double approach: on the one hand, a ""virtual ethnography"" was developed that focused on the analysis of specialized forums on the web and that used an anonymous internet questionnaire as interview method. On the other, fieldwork allowed national research teams to collect interviews and data from likely clients of trafficked prostitutes, prostitutes themselves, from police officers involved and from national experts. Who is the client of trafficked prostitution? What fuels the demand for trafficked prostitution as opposed to other forms? Which are the most effective policies for what type of prostitution? The research in this book aims to answer these questions with an innovative approach. The editors have explored the hidden world of human trafficking for prostitution and profiled its clients. In doing so, they have refuted some common stereotypes about clients while inspiring the elaboration of balanced guidelines for managing prostitution, protecting the victims and thus tackling its undesired trafficking component. Prostitution and Human Trafficking is highly recommended for researchers in the fields of criminology, sociology and law as well as for the law enforcement and legal communities. The book is also recommended for organizations and policymakers involved in fighting organized crime in general and human trafficking in particular."

Abstract: Stifling Political Competition examines the history and array of laws, regulations, subsidies and programs that benefit the two major parties and discourage even the possibility of a serious challenge to the Democrat-Republican duopoly. The analysis synthesizes political science, economics and American history to demonstrate how the two-party system is the artificial creation of a network of laws, restrictions and subsidies that favor the Democrats and Republicans and cripple potential challenges. The American Founders, as it has been generally forgotten, distrusted political parties. Nowhere in the U.S. Constitution are parties mentioned, much less given legal protection or privilege. This provocative book traces how by the end of the Civil War the Republicans and Democrats had guaranteed their dominance and subsequently influenced a range of policies developed to protect the duopoly. For example, Bennett examines how the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 (as amended in 1974 and 1976), which was sold to the public as a nonpartisan act of good government reformism actually reinforced the dominance of the two parties. While focused primarily on the American experience, the book does consider the prevalence of two-party systems around the world (especially in emerging democracies) and the widespread contempt with which they are often viewed. The concluding chapter considers the potential of truly radical reform toward opening the field to vigorous, lively, contentious third-party candidacies that might finally offer alienated voters a choice, not an echo.

Abstract: "Over the last few decades, interest in white-collar crime has tended to take a back seat to ""street"" offenses in terms of theory and research. In response, and reflecting the rising general interest in business and middle/ upper class lawbreaking, The Criminology of White-Collar Crime brings the study of white-collar offending back into the criminology mainstream, analyzing why members of higher social strata resort to criminal activity and offering psychosocial, life course, methodological, and prevention perspectives. Leading scholars expand on the pioneering work of Edwin Sutherland, delving into the variables, situations, and cultural contexts that differentiate white-collar crime from more traditional criminal areas as well as into those that coincide with them. This book asks not only how the study of white-collar crime can enrich our understanding of crime and justice more generally, but also how criminological advances over the last few decades can enhance our understanding of white-collar criminality. To that end, the volume brings together a distinguished group of criminologists, drawn from leaders in the study of white-collar crime as well as important scholars that have advanced criminology more generally and that turn their attention to the problem of white-collar crime for this book."

Abstract: Global interests are at stake at the treaty table. But personalities on either side can create difficulties apart from the issues. A skilled negotiator needs to be able to defuse the tensions and misperceptions that can derail progress. There are few sources that combine the psychological knowledge with the skills of persuasion. Now, a unique collaboration between experts in cognitive psychotherapy and political science, Psychological Processes in International Negotiations provides such a resource. Drawing on a wide range of theory and data, from neuroscientific findings and historical events to Albert Ellis' rational-emotive model of behavior, the book explains how the negotiation process works, under both adverse and optimum conditions. The authors identify psychological elements (in participants and in negotiators themselves) that have the greatest effect on negotiation outcomes, including group identity and groupthink, egocentrism, emotional awareness and competence, and the various interpersonal and communication skills, as well as steps readers can take to improve their performance. With this book, negotiators have the tools to come to clear judgments and creative, non-aggressive solutions. Highlights of the coverage: Cognition and emotion in the context of negotiation, Characteristics/traits of successful, proactive negotiators, Cognitive views of war and international crisis, Meta-communications and the working relationship, Emotive keys to coping with stalemates, Summaries of a 15-session cognitive/emotional training program for negotiators, and the proposed European Cognitive School of International Negotiation, 'Practical guide' ections linking theoretical and practical material. This synthesis of scientific insights and real-world applications makes Psychological Processes in International Negotiations necessary reading for negotiators, mediators, and conflict managers, as well as for students and researchers in this field. The authors' premise is clear: peace and stability create winners on all sides.

Abstract: " There is still much to learn about fundamental aspects of employment discrimination law as a social system. What drives the growing demand for litigation? To what extent does discrimination persist in subtle but pervasive forms and what explains how it varies by organizational and market context? How do different groups of workers perceive the extent to which they are discriminated against and what, if anything, do they do about it? How have employers responded to discrimination law? How is employment discrimination law affected by broader political and legal currents? What is the relationship between anti-discrimination law and patterns of social inequality? The chapters in this unique collection grapple with many of these issues. Questions of this scope require interdisciplinary scholarship, and this volume includes original contributions from many of the legal scholars, economists, psychologists, sociologists, political scientists, and historians who are at the forefront of new research on discrimination and law. The ""Handbook of Employment Discrimination Research"" encompasses critical discussions across different social science disciplines, as well as between legal scholars and social scientists. As a collection, the chapters suggest a broad reconsideration of employment discrimination and its treatment in law. "

Abstract: Anthropological archaeology and other disciplines concerned with the formation of early complex societies are undergoing a theoretical shift stemming from the realization that the social evolution of complex societies was more varied and complex than imagined. Given the need for new directions in theory, the book proposes that anthropologists look to political science, especially the rational choice theory of collective action. Collective action theorists propose that state formation results from the strategic behavior of rational and self-interested actors who make up the polity, including a political elite and those outside the official structure of the state. The theory proposes that the form taken by a state will depend on the "bargaining power", of rulers and taxpayers. Where taxpayers have more resources with which to bargain, it is predicted that rulers will concede benefits to taxpayers and will agree to restrictions on their power. The authors subject collective action theory to a methodologically rigorous evaluation using systematic cross-cultural analysis based on a world-wide sample of societies. The results presented here indicate strong support for most elements of the theory, but some results, in particular those pertaining to the control of ruler behavior, suggest the possibility that there are contexts in which collective action may play out in ways not anticipated by the theory. While this type of theoretical modeling is commonly seen in political science research, this volume is unique in its approach from an anthropological and archaeological viewpoint.

Abstract: Archaeology has been transformed by technology that allows one to 'see' below the surface of the earth. This work illustrates the uses of advanced technology in archaeological investigation. It deals with hand-held instruments that probe the subsurface of the earth to unveil layering and associated sites; underwater exploration and photography of submerged sites and artifacts; and the utilization of imaging from aircraft and spacecraft to reveal the regional setting of archaeological sites and to assist in cultural resource management.
Abstract: "Whether deployed in space or on the surface of the earth, remote sensing instruments are increasingly becoming standard archaeological tools. Space age techniques have begun to accumulate a wealth of information and unusual evidence such as the presence of sand-buried courses of ancient rivers in the Sahara and the associated remains of human occupations. Perhaps as important, some have been able to gather priceless knowledge without disturbing fragile sites a capability that is particularly significant in this era of conservation.Remote Sensing in Archaeology illustrates the uses of advanced technology in archaeological investigation. It deals with hand-held instruments that probe the subsurface of the earth to unveil layering and associated sites, underwater exploration and photography of submerged sites and artifacts, and the utilization of imaging from aircraft and spacecraft to reveal the regional setting of archaeological sites and to assist in cultural resource management. In each case, the technical developments are explained first, followed by examples of applications as case studies.Contributors are renowned experts from the international scientific community. Each chapter is composed as a self-standing contribution with a summary and an introduction to help the reader grasp the value of its contents. The book is profusely illustrated with graphs and photographs to explain the methodologies and results, so that the reader may better understand the principles involved and apply the knowledge gained to similar environments. Complete lists of references cited will also allow the reader to investigate more deeply the problems and findings.""This book provides an excellent and diverse overview of the emerging capability of remote sensing archaeology and is a very valuable and important text for archaeologists in their quest to use advanced technology to help in their studies of exploration, and for remote sensing technologists and scientists by giving them a good understanding of the challenges that archaeologists find in their endeavors. The editors are to be applauded for bringing together such an excellent collection of authors and articles to cover this important emerging field."" Abstract: This book explores the historical and contemporary relationships of Protestant Puritanism to political and social authoritarianism. It focuses on Puritanism s original, subsequent and modern influences on and legacies in political democracy and civil society within historically Puritan Western societies, with emphasis on Great Britain and particularly America, from the 17th to the 21th century. The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Authoritarianism: Puritanism, Democracy and Society's importance and novelty lie in its original theoretical argument and empirical demonstration that Puritanism constitutes or reproduces political-social authoritarianism rather than liberal-secular political democracy and free civil society, contrary to the conventional wisdom in Puritan societies, especially America. The book s methodological approach is thoroughly interdisciplinary by integrating methods, theories and data in sociology with those in other social sciences such as political science, history and economics. In addition, the book uses a comparative-historical method through comparisons of Western (and other) societies at various points of history in terms of the impact of Puritanism on authoritarianism.

Abstract: The trafficking of human beings is a major worldwide problem. Due to the scarcity, unreliability and non-comparability of existing data in the various affected countries there are serious difficulties related to the development of a comprehensive counter-strategy.Although there has been some improvement in the last years, the statistics on human trafficking that are available internationally are still highly unsatisfactory. There is an urgent need for a structured system to monitor this crime, a system that assesses and quantifies the illegal activity and provides the same set of quantitative and qualitative data for different countries. It should also registrate the level of response and the compliance to the requests set by the United Nations in their Protocol on trafficking in human beings. A body of information of this kind would yield profound knowledge on the problems and circumstances of people involved in the trade. The data could then be analysed with the overall goal of devising new solutions at both the national and supranational levels. In the light of the above-mentioned issues, this book starts with analysing various definitions used and thereafter the complexity of phenomena that impair the collection and comparability of data on human trafficking. Finally different approaches, both quantitative and qualitative are compared and discussed, with the aim of coming to an effective monitoring system.
