    Abstract: "Women are more religious than men. Despite being excluded from leadership positions, in almost every culture and religious tradition, women are more likely than men to pray, to worship, and to claim that their faith is important to them. Women also dominate the world of 'New Age' spirituality and are far more superstitious than men. This book reviews the now-sizeable body of social research to consider if the gender gap in religion is indeed universal. Marta Trzebiatowska and Steve Bruce extensively critique competing explanations of the differences found. They conclude that the gender gap is not the result of biology but is rather the consequence of important social differences overlapping and reinforcing each other. Responsibility for managing birth, child-rearing and death, for example, and attitudes to the body, illness, and health, each play a part. In the West, the gender gap is exaggerated because the social changes that undermined the plausibility of religion bore most heavily on men first. Where the lives of men and women become more similar, and where religious indifference grows, the gender gap gradually disappears. Written in an accessible style whilst drawing some robust conclusions, the book's main purpose is to serve as a state-of-the-art review for those interested in one of the largest differences between male and female behaviour."--Dust jacket

    Abstract: This book responds to the often loud debates about the place of Muslims in Western Europe by proposing an analysis based in institutions, including schools, courts, hospitals, the military, electoral politics, the labor market, and civic education courses. The contributors consider the way people draw on practical schemas regarding others in their midst who are often categorized as Muslims. Chapters based on fieldwork and policy analysis across several countries examine how people interact in their everyday work lives, where they construct moral boundaries, and how they formulate policies concerning tolerable diversity, immigration, discrimination, and political representation. Rather than assuming that each country has its own national ideology that explains such interactions, contributors trace diverse pathways along which institutions complicate or disrupt allegedly consistent national ideologies. These studies shed light on how Muslims encounter particular faces and facets of the state as they go about their lives, seeking help and legitimacy as new citizens of a fast-changing Europe.

Anhand von vier gegenwärtig wichtigen iranischen Autoren - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush und Malekyan - untersucht er den Transformationsprozess in den heutigen islamisch-intellektuellen Diskursen im Lichte global vorherrschender postkolonialer Zustände und zeigt, dass ihre Gedankengänge durch die sogenannten islamischen/orientalischen Ideen ebenso geformt sind wie durch die vermeintlich säkularen/westlichen Vorstellungen
    Abstract: In previous research on »Muslim« thinkers and philosophers, the dichotomously applied terms »modern« and »Islam« are central. Therein, »modern« is mostly equated with »Western«, »secular«, »reformist«, and, most recently, »global«, whereas »Islam« is equated with »oriental«, »religious«, »traditional«, and »particular«.Abbas Poya breaks from the »narrative perspective«: On the basis of four current and important Iranian writers - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush, and Malekyan - he examines the transformation process in today's Islamic intellectual discourses in the light of global dominant post-colonial conditions and shows that the thought processes are shaped by so-called Islamic/oriental ideas as well as by supposed secular/western ideas

    Abstract: "Over the past few years, secularism has become an intrinsic component of discussions on religious freedom and religious governance. The question of whether states should restrict the wearing of headscarves and other religious symbols has been particularly critical in guiding this thought process. Refashioning Secularisms in France and Turkey documents how, in both countries, devout women have contested bans on headscarves, pointing to how these are inconsistent with the 'real' spirit of secularism. These activists argue that it is possible to be simultaneously secular and religious; to believe in the values conveyed by secularism, while still remaining devoted to their faith. Through this examination, the book highlights how activists locate their claims within the frame of secularism, while at the same time revisiting it to craft a space for their religiosity. Addressing the lacuna in literature on the discourse of devout Muslims affected by these restrictions, this book offers a topical analysis on an understudied dimension of secularism and is a valuable resource for students and researchers with an interest in Religion, Gender Studies, Human Rights and Political Science. Anhand von Textbeispielen und hermeneutischen Zugangsweisen werden die Probleme angesprochen und Möglichkeiten zum Verständnis und zur Auslegung erörtert.

    Abstract: Main description: Das Buch hinterfragt die These, dass Demokratisierungen in der islamischen Welt per se zu Geschlechtergerechtigkeit führen, und zeigt, welche politischen, religiösen und kulturellen Faktoren bei Transformationen von Geschlechterordnungen bedeutsam werden. Dabei werden die arabischen Staaten, in denen die »Arabellion« erfolgreich war (Ägypten, Tunesien), mit anderen verglichen, in denen die Machtverhältnisse nicht (Saudi-Arabien, Kuwait, Syrien) oder nur minimal verändert wurden (Jemen, Jordanien). In die Untersuchung werden auch Länder einbezogen, in denen ausländische Interventionen einen Regimewechsel einleiteten (Irak, Afghanistan), in denen eine Revolution bereits mehr als ein Jahrzehnt zurückliegt (Indonesien), erfolglos war (Iran) oder gar nicht stattfand, da das Regime bereits demokratisch verfasst ist (Indien)

    Abstract: "„Religion und Politik“ wurde spätestens mit den jüngsten Revolutionen im arabischen Raum ein zentrales Thema für die Demokratisierungsforschung. Wie beeinflussen religiöse Akteure Demokratisierung? Welche Faktoren bedingen ihre Einflussnahme? Der vorliegende Band bietet erste Antworten auf diese Fragen. Hierfür wird ein theoretisch-konzeptionelles Analyseraster zur Untersuchung der Rolle religiöser Akteure im Regimewandel entwickelt. In keiner der behandelten jungen mehrheitlich christlichen, christlich-orthodoxen oder muslimischen Demokratien haben religiöse Akteure das Ergebnis des jeweiligen Transformationsprozesses bestimmt. Sie haben durch ihre politische und gesellschaftliche Einflussnahme aber zu Prozessen der Erosion autoritärer Herrschaft und zur Demokratisierung beigetragen. Die Möglichkeiten religiöser Akteure auf Demokratisierung einzuwirken, hängen vor allem von ihrer Organisationsform und der formalrechtlichen sowie de facto Stellung gegenüber dem politischen Regime ab.     Abstract: Die ‚Integrationsdebatte‘ nach Thilo Sarrazins Buch ‚Deutschland schafft sich ab‘ offenbarte ein Paradox – eine wachsende Akzeptanz des kulturellen Pluralismus, besonders unter jüngeren Menschen, und zugleich massive kulturelle Ressentiments in der Einwanderungsgesellschaft. Der renommierte Migrationsforscher und Politikberater Klaus J. Bade beleuchtet Ursachen, Hintergründe und bedrohliche Folgen dieser paradoxen Spannung. Ihr Ergebnis ist eine gefährliche Ersatzdebatte anstelle der verdrängten Diskussion um die neue Identität in der Einwanderungsgesellschaft. Das Buch beschreibt diese Ersatzdebatte als ‚negative Integration‘: die Selbstvergewisserung der Mehrheit durch die Ausgrenzung einer großen – muslimischen – Minderheit. Die Politik verkennt die Brisanz dieser negativen Integration, solange sie ‚Integrationspolitik‘ nicht als Gesellschaftspolitik für alle versteht. Mit scharfem Blick identifiziert Bade Zusammenhänge von Wortgewalt und Tatgewalt am Beispiel antimultikulturell und antiislamisch motivierter Bluttaten aus jüngster Zeit: dem Breivik-Massaker in Norwegen und den Serienmorden des Nationalsozialistischen Untergrunds (NSU) in Deutschland. Mit der Zunahme von Integrationserfolgen und der pragmatischen Akzeptanz kultureller Vielfalt sind in Deutschland auch aus kultureller Angst geborene fremdenfeindliche Abwehrhaltungen gewachsen, vor allem gegenüber dem Schreckgespenst Islam. Im Umgang mit den Themen Einwanderung, Integration und Islam ist ein kritischer Punkt erreicht.

    Description / Table of Contents: Long description: Kritiker des Staates Israel und seiner Siedlungspolitik geraten schnell unter den Verdacht des Antisemitismus - so auch die prominente jüdische Philosophin Judith Butler. In ihrem neuen Buch geht Butler der Frage nach, wie eine Kritik am Zionismus aus dem Judentum selbst heraus möglich, ja ethisch sogar zwingend ist. In einer eindringlichen Auseinandersetzung mit Hannah Arendt, Emmanuel Lévinas, Walter Benjamin, Primo Levi und den Palästinensern Edward Said und Mahmoud Darwish entwickelt sie eine neue jüdische Ethik, die sich gegen die von Israel ausgeübte und vom Zionismus legitimierte staatliche Gewalt sowie Israels koloniale Unterdrückung von Bevölkerungsgruppen wendet. Diese Ethik steht ein für die Rechte der Unterdrückten, für die Anerkennung des Anderen und die Infragestellung der jüdischen Souveränität als alleinigem Bezugsrahmen der israelischen Staatsraison. Aus der Erfahrung von Diaspora und Pluralität heraus plädiert Butler für einen Staat, in dem Israelis und Palästinenser, Juden und Nichtjuden gleichberechtigt zusammenleben.
