Abstract: "As the dynamo of South Africa's economy, Johannesburg commands a central position in the nation's imagination, and scholars throughout the world monitor the city as an exemplar of urbanity in the global South. This richly illustrated study offers detailed empirical analyses of changes in the city's physical space, as well as a host of chapters on the character of specific neighbourhoods and the social identities being forged within them. Informing all of these is a consideration of underlying economic, social and political processes shaping the wider Gauteng region."--

Abstract: "Massive demographic and economic changes over the last three decades mean that cities that are highly profiled in the canon of urban studies no longer reflect the hubs of urbanisation or the most critical contemporary global urban problems. In this Handbook, we assess what a geographical corrective in representation, process and voice might mean for urban analysis and theory. We profile an emergent, if diffuse, body on work on cities that has as its starting point the drivers of urban change that are typically associated with Southern urban realities. The Handbook does three things. First it presents empirical evidence and intellectual formulations drawn from the physical, social and economic realities of relatively under-documented cities. Second, it presents an internationally credible cohort of authors working on cities that have not previously been the object of scholarly reflection. Finally, the Handbook offers a more legitimate academic base for practitioners by providing locally legible and legitimate accounts of urban change. In these ways the volume (re)weights the coverage of urban issues to ensure that the concerns that dominate Southern policy makers and scholars are appropriately profiled.Intellectually the impact of the Handbook speaks to the debate on the utility of multiple alternative Southern theoretical positions and the value of establishing a distinctive set of Southern urban problems. Drawing on conflicting contributions and profiling divergent debates it opens discussion on the precise meaning of the city in or of the Global South. The scope of the Handbook is not literal and we embrace the notion that the definition of the global South is fluid and increasingly contested, both geographically and conceptually. Even loosely applied this Southern (re)framing challenges the intellectual status quo and makes way for new modes of illuminating the drivers of urban change, shifting focus from, for instance, the capitalist or modern state to the role of traditional elites and the persistence of extra-capitalist power bases.

Abstract: "China's rapid urbanization has restructured the great socialist cities Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou into mega cities that embrace global capitalism. This book focuses on the urban transformations of these three cities: Beijing is the nation's political and cultural capital; Shanghai is the economic and financial powerhouse; and Guangzhou is the capital of Guangdong Province and the regional center of south China. All are historical cities with rich imperial, colonial, and regional heritages, and all have been drastically transformed in the last six decades. This book examines the cities' continuous urban legacies since 1949 in relation to state governance, economic reforms, and cultural production. By adopting local historical perspectives, it offers more nuanced accounts of the current urban change than the modernization/globalization paradigm and conceptualizes the change in the context of the cities' socialist, colonial, and imperial legacies. Specifically, Samuel Y. Liang offers an overview of the urban planning and territorial expansion of the great cities since 1949; explores the production and consumption of urban housing, its spatial forms, media representations, and socio-political implications; and examines the state-led redevelopment of old urban cores and residential neighborhoods, and the urban conservation movement.Remaking China's Great Cities will be of great interest to students and scholars working across a range of fields including Chinese studies, Chinese culture and society, urban studies and architecture. Abstract: This important resource features 20 examples of masterplans that are rigorously analysed visually through drawings and diagrams that are specially drawn to scale. As well as providing high quality graphical representations of its subjects, the reference gives an important new emphasis on the processes and structures that influence the form of these projects. It reveals whether a masterplan has been privately or publicly funded, if it has been planned as a single entity, or through multiple subdivisions of land, if it has been initiated by an individual landowner or by the city through expropriation. These significant influences are highlighted in the individual case study texts and through highly legible diagrams and also by the comparisons made between the projects

Abstract: How do we accommodate a growing urban population in a way that is sustainable, equitable, and inviting? This question is becoming increasingly urgent to answer as we face diminishing fossil-fuel resources and the effects of a changing climate while global cities continue to compete to be the most vibrant centers of culture, knowledge, and finance. Jan Gehl has been examining this question since the 1960s, when few urban designers or planners were thinking about designing cities for people. But given the unpredictable, complex and ephemeral nature of life in cities, how can we best design public infrastructurevital to cities for getting from place to place, or staying in placefor human use? Studying city life and understanding the factors that encourage or discourage use is the key to designing inviting public space. In How to Study Public Life Jan Gehl and Birgitte Svarre draw from their combined experience of over 50 years to provide a history of public-life study as well as methods and tools necessary to recapture city life as an important planning dimension. This type of systematic study began in earnest in the 1960s, when several researchers and journalists on different continents criticized urban planning for having forgotten life in the city. City life studies provide knowledge about human behavior in the built environment in an attempt to put it on an equal footing with knowledge about urban elements such as buildings and transport systems. Studies can be used as input in the decision-making process, as part of overall planning, or in designing individual projects such as streets, squares or parks. The original goal is still the goal today: to recapture city life as an important planning dimension. Anyone interested in improving city life will find inspiration, tools, and examples in this invaluable guide

Abstract: Time has become an increasingly important topic in urban studies and urban planning. The spatial-temporal interplay is not only of relevance for the theory of urban development and urban politics, but also for urban planning and governance. The space-time approach focuses on the human being with its various habits and routines in the city. Understanding and taking those habits into account in urban planning and public policies offers a new way to improve the quality of life in our cities. Adapting the supply and accessibility of public spaces and services to the inhabitants’ space-time needs calls for an integrated approach to the physical design of urban space and to the organization of cities. In the last two decades the body of practical and theoretical work on urban space-time topics has grown substantially. The book offers a state of the art overview of the theoretical reasoning, the development of new analytical tools, and practical experience of the space-time design of public cities in major European countries. The contributions were written by academics and practitioners from various fields exploring space-time research and planning

Abstract: Kulturlandschaften können eine starke Dynamik aufweisen.
Abstract: Cultural landscape can be exposed to particularly strong dynamics. It poses a constant challenge to recognize cultural and historical values for planning tasks. An information system on cultural values in urban areas can be regarded as a very good tools. It can be used for urban growth as well as for shrinkage. This thesis analyses methods and procedures as they are considered for a register of cultural landscape elements and develops them further on for town planning processes. Many institutions can benefit from it: in addition to spatial planning, conservation and science, for example, private investors as well as visitors and residents. The knowledge of cultural and historical values strengthens regionally typical landscaping and spatial identities, and thus can contribute to a better quality of life. Existing approaches to cultural landscape management show that management and profiling of cultural landscapes can also be part of an economic perspective. Monetary assessments should be used severely restricted because, to the cultural and historical significance, a material value is less important. Rather, the historical and material evidence provide arguments for or against preservation and restoration of cultural landscape elements. The suggested procedure is shown by examples (see Appendix I). Two districts of Hamburg (Barmbek-Süd and Harvestehude) were appropriate to test the instruments in locations with different urban development. The results show that the proposed method of acquisition is successful for elements of the urban cultural landscape. Mapping codes and evaluation forms scaled and adapted for urban regions are the suitable tool

Abstract: "The third edition of the highly successful Readings in Planning Theory continues its well established role in defining the most current debates within the field of planning theory - identifying its boundaries, presenting the works that constitute its central focus, and addressing the central issues that face planners as theorists and practitioners. While maintaining an emphasis on developing an understanding of the process and substance of planning within real world constraints, readings in the new edition reflect many of the developments and rapidly changing dynamics of today's globalized world. Editorial updates and the addition of some 13 new readings place an emphasis on emergent themes in planning theory, including changing approaches to modernism, urbanism, communicative action, power, inequality, and justice in the city. A major new section is devoted to planning in a globalized world, with readings addressing the impact of theories of globalization and of theories of development on planning theory. Essays continue to address the role of planning in developing the 'good' city and region within the constraints of a capitalist political economy and a democratic political system, while seeking explanations and guides to planning practice based on analyses of the political economies of the U.S., U.K., and other nations. Building on its established success and well earned reputation, the third edition of Readings in Planning Theory is the definitive work in this increasingly important field"--

Abstract: Over the last several thousand years of human life on Earth, agricultural settlements became urban cores, and these regional settlements became tightly connected through infrastructures transporting people, materials, and information. This global network of urban systems, including ecosystems, is the anthroposphere; the physical flows and stocks of matter and energy within it form its metabolism. This book offers an overview of the metabolism of the anthroposphere, with an emphasis on the design of metabolic systems. It takes a cultural historical perspective, supported with methodology from the natural sciences and engineering. The book will be of interest to scholars and practitioners in the fields of regional development, environmental protection, and material management. It will also be a resource for undergraduate and graduate students in industrial ecology, environmental engineering, and resource management. The authors describe the characteristics of material stocks and flows of human settlements in space and time; introduce the method of material flow analysis (MFA) for metabolic studies; analyze regional metabolism and the material systems generated by basic activities; and offer four case studies of optimal metabolic system design: phosphorus management, urban mining, waste management, and mobility. This second edition of an extremely influential book has been substantially revised and greatly expanded. Its new emphasis on design and resource utilization reflects recent debates and scholarship on sustainable development and climate change

Abstract: "This outstanding collection, written by sophisticated and engaged Arab architects/urbanists, is a stunning sequel to 'Planning Middle Eastern Cities' (2004) Like its predecessor, it does three things: effectively demolishes the monopoly 'orientalists' had over the topic; integrates grounded Arab scholarship with mainstream 'western' critical urban theory; and, by detailing the diverse ways Arab cities are responding to globalization, challenges oversimplified debates on 'The Global City'. Studies of Arab/Islamic cities used to be the province of 'outsiders' who not only prematurely generalized to a genre, but encapsulated it in timelessness. In contrast, the case studies included in the earlier volume (Dubai, Sana'a, Baghdad, Algiers, Tunis, and Cairo), now supplemented in this volume by three older cities (Amman, Beirut, and Rabat) and five newer oil cities (Riyadh, Kuwait City, Manama, Doha and Abu-Dhabi), focus, often critically, on their rapid transformations. Each case study traces its colonial and post-colonial history, the evolution of its distinctive social and physical structures, and its intersection with the region and the world. It pays particular attention to, inter alia, the effects of recent wars, migration patterns, petroleum prices, noting the increased role of 'rulers' in city planning/real estate investment both within and between Arab countries. Each traces the increased interactions between multinational firms and local developers as they strategize and compete to elevate themselves to global city status. Neoliberalism and State-sponsored advanced capitalism are all implicated in the painful task of balancing identity and post-modernity. A must read!" -- Janet Abu-Lughod, Professor Emerita, Northwestern University and The Graduate Faculty, New School for Social Research, USA Winner of The International Planning History Society (IPHS) Book Prize

Abstract: In this groundbreaking book, Garth Myers argues for a re-visioning of how cities in Africa are discussed and written about. Touching on a diverse range of examples, from Zanzibar to Nairobi, Cape Town to Mogadishu, Kinshasa to Dakar, Myers uses original research and a close reading of works by other scholars, writers, and artists to encourage us to engage with the vibrancy and complexity of African cities

Abstract: This introduction to the field of urban design offers a comprehensive survey of the processes necessary to implement urban design work, explaining the vocabulary, the rules, the tools, the structures, and the resources in clear and accessible style. Providing a comprehensive framework for understanding urban design principles and strategies, the author argues that urban design is both a process and a collaboration in which the different forces involved are knit together. Moving from the regional scale down to the scale of places, the book examines the goals and strategies of the urban designer from the viewpoints of the private sector, public sector, and community. The text is illustrated throughout with photographs and drawings that make theory and practice relevant and alive.

Abstract: The onset of the current global economic crisis provides the perfect backdrop for reviewing the dire consequences that neoliberal urban policies have had upon the city, and for discussing possible alternatives to market-driven development. In this light "Urban asymmetries" centres on the contradictions of uneven urban development as a means of providing both a substantial critique of the current urban condition and a discussion of necessary counter practices, policies and strategies for designing in such environments, and inferring that social betterment within the city is possible by strategic use of the tools available to the urbanist and to the architect. The book aims to disprove some of the prevailing disciplinary discourses in architecture and urbanism which see the city as 'a given' rather than as an evolving socio-historic phenomenon, and intends to challenge the ubiquitous understanding of architecture as devoid of any social transformative power

Abstract: With the publication of The Rise of the Creative Class by Richard Florida in 2002, the "creative city" became the new hot topic among urban policymakers, planners and economists. Florida has developed one of three path-breaking theories about the relationship between creative individuals and urban environments. The economist Åke E. Andersson and the psychologist Dean Simonton are the other members of this "creative troika". In the Handbook of Creative Cities, Florida, Andersson and Simonton appear in the same volume for the first time. The expert contributors in this timely Handbook extend their insights with a varied set of theoretical and empirical tools. The diversity of the contributions reflect the multidisciplinary nature of creative city theorizing, which encompasses urban economics, economic geography, social psychology, urban sociology, and urban planning. The stated policy implications are equally diverse, ranging from libertarian to social democratic visions of our shared creative and urban future

Abstract: Each year, more than 15 million Chinese leave the rural areas of China and move to the cities. This figure exceeds 300,000 in the case of Shanghai. By the time 2010 cedes to 2011, the majority of China's population will be living in the cities. "Shanghai new towns. Searching for community and identity in a sprawling metropolis" documents and analyses the meteoric rate of urbanization of the countryside round Shanghai, most particularly the part played there by new towns and new villages. This decentralized planning model takes its cue from classic Western examples. A few pilot new towns have been developed on paper withhelp from Western designers and then adapted to suit Chinese standards. This book shows how the plans have been put into practice. Photos, essays by Chinese and Western critics and descriptions of projects illustrate what daily life looks like and how these new cities function within the Yangtze River Delta Metropolitan Area as a whole. It dwells at length on the international exchange of knowledge and the differences in method

Abstract: "Cognitive architecture questions how evolving modalities - from biopolitics to noopolitics - can be mapped upon the city under contemporary conditions of urbanization and globalization. Noopolitics, most broadly understood as a power exerted over the life of the mind, re-configures perception, memory and attention, and also implicates potential ways and means by which neurobiological architecture is undergoing reconfigurations. This volume, motivated by theories such as 'cognitive capitalism' and concepts such as 'neural plasticity', shows how architecture and urban processes and products commingle to form complex systems that produce novel forms of networks that empower the imagination and constitute the cultural landscape. This volume rethinks the relations between form and forms of communication, calling for a new logic of representation; it examines the manner in which information, with its non-hierarchical and distributed format is contributing both to the sculpting of brain and production of mind."--P. 4 of cover

Abstract: Interpretative Models of Urban Intervention -- Impact of the General Model on Specific Case Studies -- Participation and the Socio-Political Foundations of the Management of Urban Redevelopments -- Case Studies -- Conclusion
Abstract: In the past twenty years, globalization has led to an obsolescence of economic and social urban functions. Large cities face an implosion of old functions and, thus, have a clear need to replace old functions with new ones, especially within complex urban areas with a high concentration of both public and private assets. In this context, new forms of policies, participation models, exclusion as well as the integration of public and private needs need to be considered. Hence, the creation or destruction of values depends on how new functions replace old ones. In this book, an applicative model of complex urban interventions is presented. Based on a literature review, the model integrates different forms of Public Private Partnerships (PPPs), new types of tools and instruments associated with governance (issues/challenges) as well as new profiles of public "drivers". Various case studies of different European urban centres are being explored in detail to illustrate the effects of the general model on specific cases and, furthermore, to show differences between post-socialists and Western cities
