By bringing together leading research that addresses some of the most significant cultural, economic, and political roles of the Internet, this volume introduces students to a core set of readings that address this question in specific social and institutional contexts"--Provided by publisher

Abstract: The digital world profoundly shapes how we work and consume and also how we play, socialise, create identities, and engage in politics and civic life. Indeed, we are so enmeshed in digital networks that it is hard to conceive of them from the outside or to imagine an alternative, let alone defy their seemingly inescapable power and logic. Is it possible to disconnect from the digital network - and why might we want to? This book offers an examination of how the hidden logic of the Internet, social media, and the digital network is changing users' understanding of the world - and why that should worry us.

Abstract: "This volume provides an innovative and timely approach to a fast growing, yet still under-studied field in Latin American cultural production: cyberculture. It focuses on the transformations or continuations that cultural products and practices such as hypermedia fictions, net.art and online performance art, as well as blogs, films, databases and other genre-defying web-based projects, perform with respect to Latin American(ist) discourses, as well as their often contestatory positioning with respect to Western hegemonic discourses as they circulate in cyberspace. The intellectual rationale for the volume is located at the crossroads of two, equally important, theoretical strands: theorizations of cyberculture, in their majority the product of the anglophone academy; and contemporary debates on Latin American identity and culture. Abstract: "Contemporary media authorship is frequently collaborative, participatory, non-site specific, or quite simply goes unrecognized. In this volume, media and film scholars explore the theoretical debates around authorship, intention, and identity within the rapidly transforming and globalized culture industry of new media. Defining media broadly, across a range of creative artifacts and production cultures--from visual arts to videogames, from textiles to television--contributors consider authoring practices of artists, designers, do-it-yourselfers, media professionals, scholars, and others. Specifically, they ask: - What constitutes "media" and "authorship" in a technologically converged, globally conglomerated, multiplatform environment for the production and distribution of content? - What can we learn from cinematic and literary models of authorship--and critiques of those models--with regard to authorship not only in television and recorded music, but also interactive media such as videogames and the Internet? - How do we conceive of authorship through practices in which users generate content collaboratively or via appropriation? - What institutional prerogatives and legal debates around intellectual property rights, fair use, and copyright bear on concepts of authorship in "new media"? By addressing these issues, Media Authorship demonstrates that the concept of authorship as formulated in literary and film studies is reinvigorated, contested, remade--even, reauthored--by new practices in the digital media environment"--
