    Abstract: In den gesellschaftlichen und politischen Diskussionen wird oft eine direkte Beziehung zwischen Religion und Gewalt erörtert, die darauf zielt, die Religion schlechthin als Ursache der Gewaltbereitschaft anzuprangern. Die Quellen der monotheistischen Religionen Judentum, Christentum und Islam beinhalten ein Gewaltpotenzial, das im Laufe der Geschichte immer wieder von ihren Anhängern instrumentalisiert wurde. Diese Quellen können wir verstehen, wenn wir an ihre Aussagen nicht mit unserer heutigen Denkweise herangehen, sondern versuchen, sie aus der Perspektive ihrer Entstehungzeit zu erfassen. In diesem Buch haben sich christliche und muslimische Theologinnen und Theologen dem Thema Gewalt in der Bibel und im Koran gestellt. Anhand von Textbeispielen und hermeneutischen Zugangsweisen werden die Probleme angesprochen und Möglichkeiten zum Verständnis und zur Auslegung erörtert.

    Abstract: This book responds to the often loud debates about the place of Muslims in Western Europe by proposing an analysis based in institutions, including schools, courts, hospitals, the military, electoral politics, the labor market, and civic education courses. The contributors consider the way people draw on practical schemas regarding others in their midst who are often categorized as Muslims. Chapters based on fieldwork and policy analysis across several countries examine how people interact in their everyday work lives, where they construct moral boundaries, and how they formulate policies concerning tolerable diversity, immigration, discrimination, and political representation. Rather than assuming that each country has its own national ideology that explains such interactions, contributors trace diverse pathways along which institutions complicate or disrupt allegedly consistent national ideologies. These studies shed light on how Muslims encounter particular faces and facets of the state as they go about their lives, seeking help and legitimacy as new citizens of a fast-changing Europe.

This path-breaking ethnography shifts the conversation from one of victimhood to one of ongoing resistance and resilience as a means of healing the soul wounds of settler colonialism. Yakama Rising: Indigenous Cultural Revitalization, Activism, and Healing argues that Indigenous communities themselves have the answers to the persistent social problems they face. This book contributes to understanding Indigenous social change by articulating the premise that grassroots activism and cultural revitalization are powerful examples of decolonization. Michelle Jacob employs ethnographic case studies to demonstrate the tension between reclaiming traditional cultural practices and adapting to change.     Abstract: This volume explores the normative foundations of fair(er) relations in the immigration society. The focus is on the concept of solidarity. Beyond a »solidarity among intimates«, immigration society solidarity designates an active practice, which while not necessarily commonality-based, entails both a concrete opponent as well as a political concept of society. This idea is questioned and further developed in the contributions in terms of its theoretical, moral, educational, philosophical, and sociological dimensions.

Dabei wird »Moderne« meist mit »westlich«, »säkular«, »reformerisch« und neuerdings »global« gleichgesetzt - und »Islam« mit »orientalisch«, »religiös«, »traditionell« und »partikular«.Abbas Poya nimmt einen Wechsel der »Erzählperspektive« vor. Anhand von vier gegenwärtig wichtigen iranischen Autoren - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush und Malekyan - untersucht er den Transformationsprozess in den heutigen islamisch-intellektuellen Diskursen im Lichte global vorherrschender postkolonialer Zustände und zeigt, dass ihre Gedankengänge durch die sogenannten islamischen/orientalischen Ideen ebenso geformt sind wie durch die vermeintlich säkularen/westlichen Vorstellungen
    Abstract: In previous research on »Muslim« thinkers and philosophers, the dichotomously applied terms »modern« and »Islam« are central. Therein, »modern« is mostly equated with »Western«, »secular«, »reformist«, and, most recently, »global«, whereas »Islam« is equated with »oriental«, »religious«, »traditional«, and »particular«.Abbas Poya breaks from the »narrative perspective«: On the basis of four current and important Iranian writers - Al-e Ahmad, Shari'ati, Sorush, and Malekyan - he examines the transformation process in today's Islamic intellectual discourses in the light of global dominant post-colonial conditions and shows that the thought processes are shaped by so-called Islamic/oriental ideas as well as by supposed secular/western ideas

    Note: Long description: Die Figur des Zeugen, der von einem Ereignis berichtet und es damit anderen zugänglich macht, verkörpert eine fundamentale Wissenspraxis für die menschliche Lebenswelt. Umso erstaunlicher ist es, dass die Philosophie dieses Thema lange Zeit eher eindimensional erörtert hat: Nur die erkenntnistheoretische Frage, ob das durch Zeugen vermittelte Wissen überhaupt wirkliches Wissen sei, schien interessant. Doch ist das Problem des Zeugnisablegens damit erschöpft? Dieses Buch untersucht Zeugenschaft in systematischer und historischer Perspektive als eine soziale Institution des Wissens. Es leistet dabei erstmals einen Brückenschlag von erkenntnistheoretischen Ansätzen zum Wissens- und Informationscharakter des Zeugnisgebens hin zu medienkritischen Fragen, Überlegungen zur Rolle von Zeugen im öffentlichen Raum sowie zur ethischen und politischen Bedeutung von Überlebenszeugen.; Biographical note: Sibylle Schmidt (M.A.) promoviert am Institut für Philosophie der Freien Universität Berlin über Episteme und Ethos der Zeugenschaft. Sybille Krämer (Prof. Dr. phil.) ist Professorin am Institut für Philosophie der Freien Universität Berlin. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte sind u.a. Sprachphilosophie, Theorie der Medien und Medialität sowie Philosophie des Bildes und der Schrift. In ihrem neuen Buch geht Butler der Frage nach, wie eine Kritik am Zionismus aus dem Judentum selbst heraus möglich, ja ethisch sogar zwingend ist. In einer eindringlichen Auseinandersetzung mit Hannah Arendt, Emmanuel Lévinas, Walter Benjamin, Primo Levi und den Palästinensern Edward Said und Mahmoud Darwish entwickelt sie eine neue jüdische Ethik, die sich gegen die von Israel ausgeübte und vom Zionismus legitimierte staatliche Gewalt sowie Israels koloniale Unterdrückung von Bevölkerungsgruppen wendet. Diese Ethik steht ein für die Rechte der Unterdrückten, für die Anerkennung des Anderen und die Infragestellung der jüdischen Souveränität als alleinigem Bezugsrahmen der israelischen Staatsraison.     Abstract: As the European public sphere becomes increasingly shaped by debates surrounding Islam, this book asks whether it is possible to rethink the public sphere, conceiving of it not as a site of consensus, but as one of antagonism and confrontation. With rich case studies drawn from various sites across Europe, such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK, Islam and Public Controversy in Europe examines a range of public controversies, including mosque construction, ritual slaughter, Sharia councils, burqa bans and love and marriage, to address the question of how cases of 'Islamic difference' might be addressed outside the confines of established normative discourses, which focus on freedom of religion, minority rights or multiculturalism. Acknowledging the creative role of dissent, this book explores the manner in which public controversies shed new light on understandings of aesthetics, animal rights, freedom of speech, the uniformity of secular law and modes of individual emancipation.Developing an innovative conceptual framework and elaborating the notion of controversy as a methodological tool, Islam and Public Controversy in Europe draws our attention to the processes of interaction, confrontation and mutual transformation, thereby opening up a new horizon for rethinking difference and pluralism in Europe. As such, it will appeal to scholars across the social sciences with interests in religion, integration, cultural difference and the public sphere.     Abstract: Kritiker des Staates Israel und seiner Siedlungspolitik geraten schnell unter den Verdacht des Antisemitismus - so auch die prominente jüdische Philosophin Judith Butler. In ihrem neuen Buch geht Butler der Frage nach, wie eine Kritik am Zionismus aus dem Judentum selbst heraus möglich, ja ethisch sogar zwingend ist. In einer eindringlichen Auseinandersetzung mit Hannah Arendt, Emmanuel Lévinas, Walter Benjamin, Primo Levi und den Palästinensern Edward Said und Mahmoud Darwish entwickelt sie eine neue jüdische Ethik, die sich gegen die von Israel ausgeübte und vom Zionismus legitimierte staatliche Gewalt sowie Israels koloniale Unterdrückung von Bevölkerungsgruppen wendet. Diese Ethik steht ein für die Rechte der Unterdrückten, für die Anerkennung des Anderen und die Infragestellung der jüdischen Souveränität als alleinigem Bezugsrahmen der israelischen Staatsraison. Aus der Erfahrung von Diaspora und Pluralität heraus plädiert Butler für einen Staat, in dem Israelis und Palästinenser, Juden und Nichtjuden gleichberechtigt zusammenleben.     Abstract: Da die beiden Begriffe „Kultur“ und „Staat“ über eine große inhaltliche Breite verfügen, ist das Feld der Interpretationsmöglichkeiten außerordentlich weit. Wichtiger als der quantitative Umfang der Begriffe aber ist selbstverständlich deren qualitative Bedeutung: Sowohl vom Begriff der Kultur als auch vom Begriff des Staates lässt sich sagen, dass sie im eigentlichen Wortsinne fundamental sind. Sie legen das Fundament für das Zusammenleben der Menschen – mit Kultur ist dabei die (oft unsichtbare und doch überall wirksame) Totalität menschlicher Hervorbringungen gemeint, mit Staat die institutionelle Grundordnung einer Gemeinschaft, welche die wichtigsten Regeln der Herrschaft in einem bestimmten Territorium verbindlich festschreibt. Der Zusammenhang zwischen Kultur und Staat, genauer: Die Abhängigkeit des Staates von der Kultur, ist offensichtlich: Staaten sind immer auch Ausdruck kultureller Werte und Ideale. Ein besonderes Kulturverständnis schlägt sich in aller Regel auch in einem besonderen Staatsverständnis nieder; dabei erweisen sich die primär ideellen Werte einer Kultur häufig sogar als prioritär gegenüber ihrer materiellen Verwirklichung in Institutionen. In jedem Fall gilt, dass beide, Staat und Kultur, aufs Engste miteinander verzahnt und ineinander verwoben sind. Wie dies von großen (Kultur-)Theoretikern des 20.     Abstract: Die ‚Integrationsdebatte‘ nach Thilo Sarrazins Buch ‚Deutschland schafft sich ab‘ offenbarte ein Paradox – eine wachsende Akzeptanz des kulturellen Pluralismus, besonders unter jüngeren Menschen, und zugleich massive kulturelle Ressentiments in der Einwanderungsgesellschaft. Der renommierte Migrationsforscher und Politikberater Klaus J. Bade beleuchtet Ursachen, Hintergründe und bedrohliche Folgen dieser paradoxen Spannung. Ihr Ergebnis ist eine gefährliche Ersatzdebatte anstelle der verdrängten Diskussion um die neue Identität in der Einwanderungsgesellschaft. Das Buch beschreibt diese Ersatzdebatte als ‚negative Integration‘: die Selbstvergewisserung der Mehrheit durch die Ausgrenzung einer großen – muslimischen – Minderheit. Die Politik verkennt die Brisanz dieser negativen Integration, solange sie ‚Integrationspolitik‘ nicht als Gesellschaftspolitik für alle versteht. Mit scharfem Blick identifiziert Bade Zusammenhänge von Wortgewalt und Tatgewalt am Beispiel antimultikulturell und antiislamisch motivierter Bluttaten aus jüngster Zeit: dem Breivik-Massaker in Norwegen und den Serienmorden des Nationalsozialistischen Untergrunds (NSU) in Deutschland. Mit der Zunahme von Integrationserfolgen und der pragmatischen Akzeptanz kultureller Vielfalt sind in Deutschland auch aus kultureller Angst geborene fremdenfeindliche Abwehrhaltungen gewachsen, vor allem gegenüber dem Schreckgespenst Islam. Im Umgang mit den Themen Einwanderung, Integration und Islam ist ein kritischer Punkt erreicht.
