The traditional roles of employees and employers increasingly lose clear definition. Every individual forges his own destiny and performs, it seems, with virtuosity on the keyboard of self-management. Between the autonomous freedom, an enormous degree of performance concentration and biographical uncertainties, new forms of work emerge - but also new phenomena of stress. How do people deal with this while staying healthy and fit? How can one handle this change from a societal point of view? And how we react to these challenges as individuals? The contributions to this volume provide answers.

Abstract: This book deals with a variety of socio-cultural, economic and political problems facing Cameroon and the rest of Africa, with particular reference to unemployment, corruption, poverty, criminality, violence, insecurity, and moral decadence. It presents a critical analysis of government policies from the colonial era to the present time; arguing that most of these policies have been stalled by an uncommitted leadership. The regime in Cameroon has drifted away from basic managerial and democratic principles in in favour of the ethnicisation of politics, sterile consumption, clientelism and patronage. The book contends that corruption has become the main instrument of governance whereby the political and economic elites control the wealth of the nation at the expense of a majority who wallow in abject poverty and misery. Faced with the difficult economic and political situation, most youth and the intelligentsia have adopted official and unofficial' means to circumvent all immigration rules to travel to affluent Western countries, the consequences notwithstanding. Brain drain is often the outcome. Further, it examines issues of social exclusion, political representation and marginalization with special focus on the predicament of Anglophone Cameroonians as a socio-cultural community. The inclusion of examples and case studies based on empirical and secondary data from Africa is intended to foreground the importance of comparison, and attract the interest of both academic and non-academic readership.

Abstract: This study raises awareness to the emergence of a new genre in world literatureóhybridized literature. It rejects the assumption according to which literatures written in less commonly taught languages should be subsumed into one universally accessible global idiom. Instead, Vakunta challenges literary scholars and readers of literature to regard untranslatability as the key to cross-cultural engagement. The bookís multiple approaches and innumerable sources generate complex interdisciplinary connections and provide an excellent introduction to a complex literary phenomenon alien to literati resident outside the officially bilingual multicultural and multilingual Republic of Cameroon.

Abstract: This concise book on agile and Scrum offers an alternative methodology for project planning in the communication branch in which flexibility is embraced and formalized. Dynamics and change are no longer obstacles, but simply elements of the method. Scrum was invented by two organization scholars and further developed in the information technology industry. Today, it is applied in many disciplines, but scarcely at all in the field of communication. That is expected to change swiftly. Scrum is now being applied experimentally in communication and users are highly enthusiastic.

Rezension Besprochen in: saldo, 6 (2013) Insider, 7 (2013) www.lehrerbibliothek.de, 25.11.2013, Oliver Neumann.

The book describes the social impact of technological developments over five millennia, and addresses topics such as the ways in which literacy has influenced cognitive and scientific development; the social impact of modern speech technology; the influence of various printing technologies; the usesand limitations of machine translation; how far mass information access is a means for exploitation or enlightenment; the deciphering of ancient scripts; and technical aids for people with language disabilities. Richard Sproat writes in a clear, readable style, introducing linguistic and other scientific concepts as they are needed. His book offers fascinating reading for everyone interested in how language and technology have shaped and continue to shape our day-to-day lives.

Abstract: In our increasingly complicated and data-driven world, many new developments are so complex that only experts comprehend their nuances. But what they don't grasp is how to tell the world about them. Communicating technical content to nontechnical listeners has fast become a critical 21st-century skill. Explaining what you do and why it's important drives funding, policy decisions, media exposure, public awareness, and customer adoption. This groundbreaking guide will help anyone to deliver clear, persuasive messages that win hearts, minds, and budgets. Supercommunicator explains how to: ● Distill details and data into big ideas ● Deliver meaning to audiences ● Use storytelling to captivate and educate ● Humanize content to make complicated ideas more tangible ● Layer harder ideas on top of easier ideas ● Strip away complex language, jargon, and acronyms ● Use analogies to explain unfamiliar areas ● Master new digital modes of expression ● And more Enhanced with a wealth of examples--from how the National Academy of Sciences used audience research to improve the way evolution is taught, to how NASA incorporated cutting-edge tools to visualize issues in climatology--this one-of-a-kind book reveals how to make the complex comprehensible, and the dry deeply compelling.

Biographische Informationen Sebastian J. Abstract: As Africa and its diaspora commemorate fifty years of post-independence Pan-Africanism, this unique and sometimes provocative collection of biographical essays provides profound insight into the thirteen prominent individuals of African descent who have won the Nobel Peace Prize since 1950. From the first American president of African descent, Barack Obama, whose father was Kenyan and whose career was inspired by the civil rights and anti-apartheid struggles promoted by other key individuals such as Marin Luther King, Jr., Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, and Albert Luthuli; to influential figures in peacemaking such as Ralph Bunche, Anwar Sadat, Kofi Annan, and F.W. De Klerk; as well as Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee, Wangari Maathai, and Mohamed El-Baradei, who have been variously involved in women's rights, environmental protection, and nuclear disarmament, Africa's Peacemakers reveals how this remarkable collection of individuals have changed the world - for better or worse.

Abstract: Quick and easy access is the goal of the new 11th edition of The American Marketplace: Demographics and Spending Patterns. Designed for convenience, The American Marketplace draws on scores of government sources to give you a population profile of the United States in one handy volume. Its hundreds of tables are organized into 11 chapters covering attitudes, education, health, housing, income, labor force, living arrangements, population, spending, time use, and wealth. The American Marketplace reveals the latest demographic trends and tells the American story. It examines changing lifestyles in rich detail, from growing racial and ethnic diversity to declining homeownership, from disappearing nuclear families to recovery in household spending, from another baby bust to new attitudes toward gay marriage. New to this edition of The American Marketplace are 2012 population estimates for the nation, states, and metropolitan areas, revealing new patterns of growth. The Attitudes chapter has data from the 2012 General Social Survey. The Income chapter, with 2012 income statistics from the 2013 Current Population Survey, reveals the struggle to stay afloat. The American Marketplace is a reference tool that will help you cut through the clutter and track the trends.

Abstract: Sven Lindqvist is one of our most original writers on race, colonialism, and genocide, and his signature approachuniting travelogues with powerful acts of historical excavationrenders his books devastating and unforgettable. Now, for the first time, Lindqvist's most beloved works are available in one beautiful and affordable volume with a new introduction by Adam Hochschild. The Dead Do Not Die includes the full unabridged text of "Exterminate All the Brutes", called "a book of stunning range and near genius" by David Levering Lewis. In this work, Lindqvist uses Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness as a point of departure for a haunting tour through the colonial past, retracing the steps of Europeans in Africa from the late eighteenth century onward and thus exposing the roots of genocide via his own journey through the Saharan desert. The full text of Terra Nullius is also included, for which Lindqvist traveled 7,000 miles through Australia in search of the lands the British had claimed as their own because it was inhabited by "lower races," the native Aboriginesnearly nine-tenths of whom were annihilated by whites. The shocking story of how "no man's land" became the province of the white man was called "the most original work on Australia and its treatment of Aboriginals I have ever read . . . marvelous" by Phillip Knightley, author of Australia.

Abstract: Veterans are celebrated with speeches, statues, memorials, holidays, and affirmative action. They are lavishly praised in public gatherings and private conversations. Contradicting this widespread attitude, Stephen Kershnar's Gratitude toward Veterans: A Philosophical Explanation of Why American Should Not Be Very Grateful to Veterans argues that U.S. citizens should not be very grateful to veterans.

Abstract: Anthropology of Eastern Religions: Ideas, Organizations, and Constituencies is a comparative survey of the world's major religious traditions as professional enterprises and, often, as social movements. Documenting the principle ideas behind Eastern religious traditions from an anthropological perspective, Murray J. Leaf demonstrates how these ideas have been used in building internal organizations that mobilize or fail to mobilize external support.

Abstract: In China, 'The Festival of February the Second' literally means the day of dragon's head-raising and, on this day, Chinese people pray for favorable weather and a bumper harvest for the year. This book - printed in an English-Chinese bilingual text - introduces the origin, development, implied meanings, and abundant features of this festival. As one of many traditional Chinese festivals, 'The Festival of February the Second' is less known outside China. Even many locals in China have forgotten this important festival, which used to be popular in rural areas. Originating from the countryside, it is deeply rooted in the agricultural era. Therefore, it has many aspects that are different to other festivals in China. The book offers an insight into a key part of China's festival heritage. Abstract: The contribution of this book to the field of reconciliation is both theoretical and practical, recognizing that good theory guides effective practice and practice is the ground for compelling theory. Using a Girardian hermeneutic as a starting point, a new conceptual Gestalt emerges in these essays, one not fully integrated in a formal way but showing a clear understanding of some of the challenges and possibilities for dealing with the deep divisions, enmity, hatred, and other effects of violence.

Abstract: Islam in "Liberal" Europe provides the first comprehensive overview of the political and social status of Islam and of Muslim migrants in Europe. In addition to offering a critical assessment of positive and negative trends in Islamic-Western relations, Kai Hafez also engages in a theoretical debate revolving around integration, tolerance, multicultural liberalism, and modern liberal democracy. Assessing Islamophobia as it is manifested in politics, society, media, academia, school, and churches, the author debates the question of whether liberal society in Europe, in order to avoid a growing gap between integrative politics and discriminatory societies, needs a complete renewal not only of political ideologies but also of cultures and institutions.

Abstract: Consanguineous marriages have been practiced for hundreds of years, predominantly by Moslems. Although it is generally accepted among communities that the social advantages outweigh other, the rate of congenital malformations and genetic diseases among the offspring borne of consanguineous marriages is higher and an increase in sterility, rates of abortions, stillbirths and neonatal deaths has been suggested by some researchers. These problems result in a substantial economic burden within the communities involved in the practice. Strategies for reducing the frequency of consanguineous marriages include expansion of educational programs, promotion of genetic testing services, and research to identify the genes responsible for genetic defects. Nowadays, with the migration of large numbers of Moslems towards Western countries, consanguinity is becoming a practical issue in places where it was barely known, previously. This eBook serves as a guide for health care workers and counselors of the phenomenon and its associated problems. This eBook begins with an introduction of the topic from a social, legal and biological perspective. It then progresses to research about associated genetic disorders, reproductive and social awareness issues through the proceeding chapters. The eBook concludes with 2 chapters exploring strategies to counter the effects of consanguinity within the general population.

Abstract: Younger-Generation Korean Experiences in the United States: Personal Narratives on Ethnic and Racial Identities compares the formation of ethnic and racial identities in two generational cohorts of a contemporary immigrant group. Through personal essays, the book reveals how external factors helped younger-generation Korean Americans who grew up in the 1980s and early 1990s retain more of their cultural heritage than had preceding generations.

Abstract: In crisp and accessible language, TheEffects of Globalization in Latin America, Africa, and Asia challenges conventional wisdom that often provides one-sided views of globalization. The book brings to light that which many scholars ignore: the symbiotic linkages within a global supranational regime consisting of MNCs, WTO, the IMF/World Bank, western media technology, and the lone superpower that are the principal actors in the global political economy.

Abstract: This book examines the problem of transparency in the news media in China through analysis of the political and market control jointly imposed by the party-state and the media. It argues that the gap between rhetoric and reality reveals the disjuncture of the party-state and the media from their political representation.

Abstract: Die wichtigsten Publikationen der Kabarettistin, Vortragskünstlerin und Filmschauspielerin Resi Langer. In Alfred Richard Meyers Reihe »Lyrische Flugblätter«, in der u.a. Biographische Informationen Johanna Egger, geb. 1986, Literaturwissenschaftlerin, wissenschaftliche Hilfskraft am Seminar für Deutsche Philologie an der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. Abstract: Using evidence from Ghana, this book argues that power and class-based structural relationships are significant components in understanding how migratory diasporas shape and are shaped in turn by social class and inequality. This necessitates changes in national policies to address the widening gap of inequality between rich and poor.

Abstract: This issue discusses economic developments in the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan (MENAP), which continue to reflect the diversity of conditions prevailing across the region. Most high-income oil exporters, primarily in the GCC, continue to record steady growth and solid economic and financial fundamentals, albeit with medium-term challenges that need to be addressed. In contrast, other countries-Iraq, Libya, and Syria-are mired in conflicts with not only humanitarian but also economic consequences. And yet other countries, mostly oil importers, are making continued but uneven progress in advancing their economic agendas, often in tandem with political transitions and amidst difficult social conditions. In most of these countries, without extensive economic and structural reforms, economic prospects for the medium term remain insufficient to reduce high unemployment and improve living standards.

Abstract: In this important new historical study, Maria Kovacs examines the struggle between liberal and anti-Semitic policies among professional groups--doctors, lawyers, engineers--in Hungary. Kovacs's main emphasis is on the interwar period when unemployment, expansion of the welfare system, and competition for state jobs during the Great Depression, combined with crass anti-Semitism on the part of engineers and medical associations, radically altered previously liberal policies of open entry and equal educational opportunity. Liberal Professions and Illiberal Politics analyzes to what extent these new policies were dictated by authoritarian governments from above and to what extent they originated within the professions themselves. The story ends with the Holocaust, which sealed the fate of those professionals who had become victims of persecution under the German occupation of Hungary.
