Do celebrities have some unique source of power that allows them to affect public opinion and influence policy outcomes?.

Abstract: Constructing difference where there should be none is the main subject of this collection of essays about gender and its cultural manifestations and representations. From the pronouns we use, through the titles and positions we hold in our workplaces, to the more salient issues concerning abuse of power and exertion of violence, gender runs as a seemingly inevitable divide. This volume addresses the continuing relevance of the quest to diminish that gap, from the perspectives of literature, language, film, law, employment, aging and agency, both social and political.

Keywords: Abortion-Social aspects ; Electronic books
Abstract: This book will serve to persuade students, educators, politicians, lawmakers, and community leaders in the debate on abortion. It will emancipate the reader from mundane and restrictive analyses, such as those lobbed by courts, legislatures, and mass media. It scathes routine constrictions and liberates fresh thoughts on specialized topics, including choice, penance, and parenthood. The book offers powerful perspectives about legalized termination and reduction, using allusions to cult films and images from pop culture to explore dark realities and seldom discussed principles of survival and procreation. Its analysis is bolstered by frameworks adopted from feminism, film studies, queer theory, religious analysis, legal studies, criminal justice, social science, and economics.

Abstract: Effective leadership does not occur by chance. Leaders must be trained and groomed for the daunting responsibility of leading organizations. Research shows that half of the people currently in leadership positions will fail. Why they fail and what can be done to prevent failure are the main subjects of this book. It shows that effective leadership is possible and illustrates why and how, based on research and case studies from an epidemiological perspective. The epidemiological word "determinant" is used frequently, and is a word that no other book on leadership uses. Epidemiologists work from two basic principles: namely, that all diseases have determinants and that diseases do not occur randomly. In other words, there are always causes for diseases and patterns that describe how diseases spread. Effective and ineffective leadership always have determinants that are not randomly distributed; the impacts are uniformly and deeply spread throughout an organization. Like the epidemiologists, this book not only identifies leadership determinants, but also provides research-based "antidotes" at the end of each chapter, along with a summary of the most salient points in the chapter. This book offers examples of leadership and governance from the non-profit sector, businesses, public and private education, higher education, and other organizations, highlighting over 50 case studies to illustrate concepts about leadership.

Abstract: This book deals with the new dynamics of Islam in East Africa (Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Sudan and Comoros) and its attempt to expand through various missionary activities. As Muslim reformers have done elsewhere in the world, the reformers in East Africa are fighting for an Islamic awakening. The central argument of this book is to say that although these activities are supported by contributions from transnational networks, their origins go back to the frustration of Muslim communities of East Africa with politics, education, and professional training. The other argument is to show that this Islamic awakening is not just about the Salafi or Muslim Brothers trend, it concerns also Shī'a, Sufi, Muslim Bible Scholars and others alike. All these trends mimic each other while competing against each other at the same time. They also take the same position vis-à-vis the various Christian groups.

Abstract: An indispensable guide to reducing the suffering-of patients and caregivers alike-and to improving healthcare delivery for all In our efforts to treat patients, cure illness, and manage institutions, healthcare professionals too often overlook the fundamental purpose everyone in the industry shares: to alleviate suffering. Press Ganey's Chief Nursing Officer, Christina Dempsey, has worked everywhere in healthcare, from the ward floor to the hospital boardroom. She has also experienced the system as a patient and as a family member of a critically ill patient. In The Antidote to Suffering , this 30-year healthcare veteran and patient-experience thought leader argues that the key to improving healthcare is to reduce the suffering-physical, psychological, and emotional-of patients and caregivers alike through Compassionate Connected CareTM. Drawing on her 360-degree perspective, Dempsey offers a comprehensive, detailed, evidence-based plan that addresses the clinical, operational, cultural, and behavioral dimensions of care that every patient and caregiver experiences, in every setting. When suffering decreases, Dempsey argues, outcomes improve for patients and those who care for them. A virtuous cycle takes hold, leading to increases in morale, loyalty, and productivity and results in a culture that drives quality, safety, and value. It paves the path for creating a new national healthcare culture-one that values compassion, fosters efficiency, and drives innovation The Antidote to Suffering is the first book to explore the pervasiveness of suffering in our healthcare system, and to provide the strategies and tools to: * Identify and measure suffering throughout your organization * Create a system in which every clinical response is informed by compassion * Operationalize staff behavior to promote meaning and purpose * Increase productivity by building a culture of collaboration Reducing human suffering isn't just a moral imperative for healthcare providers. It's a practical way to improve organizations and fix our broken system-without sacrificing the respect, dignity, and compassion we all deserve.

Abstract: A book for a different breed of business leader, one who looks beyond the moment to create a life of significance. Most of us are familiar with the traditional way of looking at legacy-something preserved in the past. Traditional legacy is all around us, evidenced by the steady churn of autobiographies, bequests, commemorations, and dedications we are forever leaving in our collective cultural wake. This is not the legacy you will find in this book. Legacy in the Making celebrates an active, dynamic form of "modern legacy," seen through the eyes of a select group of extraordinary men and women who are pursuing their enduring ambitions in the age of now. More than caretakers of the past, these modern legacy builders are also the authors of a vital today and tomorrow. Rather than leaving their legacies behind them, they are looking ahead to harness their long-term ambitions and inspire others to help carry them forward. These are not static, traditional legacies. These are legacies in the making.

Abstract: The antidote to navigating turbulent times isn't more rules. It is timeless virtue that creates sustainable value. Thoughtful leaders are keenly aware of the enormous challenge they face to drive high performance in a world that continues to ratchet up pressure and uncertainty. Some leaders respond by getting tough and establishing strict rules. They get people in line, but they don't inspire excellence. Wise leaders, on the other hand, help their people practice character to navigate their way through the turbulence-without lowering performance expectations. As a result, their people are more reliable under pressure. Exception to the Rule links ancient wisdom with contemporary science on high performance, teamwork, and engagement. Building an organizational culture based on classical virtues- of trust, compassion, courage, justice, wisdom, temperance and hope - is both strategically smart and a better way to live. Exception to the Rule walks you through the steps of helping everyone in your organization focus on character defined by virtue. The word virtue means excellence, which is why each one is essential to help people perform at a high level despite uncertainty and pressure. Under character--based leadership, teams work better together, creativity flourishes and engagement increases. The most powerful idea of Exception to the Rule is this: character defined by virtue is not based on birthright; it can be learned and practiced. Everyone can develop habits to become better than they were. While character cannot be legislated, character can be cultivated. As virtue proves its value, the culture you have can evolve into the culture you need.

Abstract: What do Mark Cuban, Steve Case, Sanjay Gupta, Donna Shalala, and Christina Aguilera all have in common? They are all Junior Achievement alumni who developed an entrepreneurial attitude about their life's work! In this landmark book, Larry Farrell, the world's most experienced authority on researching and teaching entrepreneurship, has partnered with JA to bring their combined vast experience directly to you. In The Entrepreneurial Attitude , Farrell reveals his latest research on the four fundamental practices of the world's greatest entrepreneurs: Sense of Mission, Customer/Product Vision, High-Speed Innovation, and Self-Inspired Behavior. He then brings those proven practices to life through interviews with seventy high-achieving JA alumni across 35 countries including AOL founder Steve Case, CNN medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta, British MP David Lammy, Hong Kong biotech entrepreneur Eric Chen, social entrepreneur Fernando Tamayo in Peru, non-profit pioneer Sheikha Hessa al-Khalifa in Bahrain, Journalist Adedayo Fashanu in Nigeria, and President of the Clinton Foundation Donna Shalala. This powerful combination illustrates for the first time that having an entrepreneurial attitude is the key to success in any career in any field: a business start-up or a large corporation, social enterprise, the traditional professions, government, or even the arts. Farrell also provides application planning exercises, helping you to apply the entrepreneurial basics to your own chosen field.

Abstract: Killing your current marketing structure may be the only way to save it! Two of the world's top marketing experts reveal the next level of breakthrough success-transforming your marketing strategy into a standalone profit center. What if everything we currently know about marketing is what is holding us back? Over the last two decades, we've watched the entire world change the way it buys and stays loyal to brands. But, marketing departments are still operating in the same, campaign-centric, product-led operation that they have been following for 75 years. The most innovative companies around the world have achieved remarkable marketing results by fundamentally changing their approach. By creating value for customers through the use of owned media and the savvy use of content, these businesses have dramatically increased customer loyalty and revenue. Some of them have even taken it to the next step and developed a marketing function that actually pays for itself. Killing Marketing explores how these companies are ending the marketing as we know it--in favor of this new, exciting model. Killing Marketing provides the insight, approaches, and examples you need to understand these disruptive forces in ways that turn your marketing from cost center to revenue creator. This book builds the case for, literally, transforming the purpose of marketing within your organization. Joe Pulizzi and Robert Rose of the Content Marketing Institute show how leading companies are able sell the very content that propels their marketing strategy. You'll learn how to: * Transform all or part of your marketing operation into a media company * Integrate this new operation into traditional marketing efforts * Develop best practices for attracting and retaining audiences * Build a strategy for competing against traditional media companies * Create a paid/earned media strategy fueled by an owned media strategy Red Bull, Johnson & Johnson, Disney and Arrow Electronics have succeeded in what ten years ago would have been deemed impossible. They continue to market their products as they always have, and, through their content-driven and audience-building initiatives, they drive value outside the day-to-day products they sell-and monetize it directly. Killing Marketing rewrites the rules of marketing-enabling you to make the kind of transition that turns average companies into industry legends.

Abstract: This volume explores the different aspects of the management of death, dying and mortality by migrants in Southern Europe, through deconstructing persistent idiosyncratic beliefs, myths, narratives, silences, and constraints. It focuses on migrants from diverse geographical and cultural backgrounds in Portugal, Spain and Italy. It also includes reflections on Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau, East-Timor and Cuba. The thirteen chapters provide insights into epistemological issues, the trans-national circulation of bodies, spirits and rituals, migration, the placing of the dead and diverse funerary practices and perspectives. Privileging a multi-sited approach to death and migrations, this book draws on oral, archival and published sources to give visibility to populations that often live in liminal structural positions and transient worlds. By exploring the multifaceted dimensions of death and suffering among immigrant populations, it refocuses the debate on migration in Europe and beyond by highlighting under-researched issues such as end-of-life care, mental health, death, burial, cremation, funerary ceremonies and symbols, repatriation and martyrdom.

Abstract: This volume introduces sociological knowledge to social reality in various fields that are especially significant for Southern European societies, such as education, migration, social cohesion and political participation. It provides the reader with an understanding of the new and radical challenges that Europe has been called to face, and complements academic research with new conceptualisations of sociology which solve social public problems in specific territorial contexts. The book focuses on the body as the vector of social cohesion policies in the awareness that cohesion revolves around the ability of all people - not just migrants - to manage conflict and change. With these aims, the empowered body is suggested as a means able to build up the timescales of memory as time-windows open to the ethic boundaries of human life. In today's world, the question of empowerment crosses borders, not only geographic but also cognitive, linguistic and cultural ones. Refuting the longstanding notion that culture alone is responsible for group behaviour, this book confronts the "moving up" and "getting on" characterizing current immigration policies, specifically in Europe and the Mediterranean area and, in general, around the world. Methodologically, all contributions here pay attention to the powerful connection between the individual lives and the historical and socio-economic contexts in which these lives unfold. The brilliant analyses here suggest, at least, the "borderlands" as the agent making the movement of policy.

Abstract: This book provides an exploration of the historical conditions that gradually defined subordinating symbols and conflictual values in social relations between the sexes. It reveals how snakes and the gelid eyes of Medusa--the archetypical snake-woman--have reverberated across the visual arts and written sources throughout the ages in association with negative emotions: fear, anger, scorn and shame. The outcomes and implications of the disturbing correlation between the dangerous female gaze, the malignitas of the snake and the lethal power of menstruation that have been woven through the fabric of the Western imaginary are analysed here. This analysis reveals an intriguing history of female reptilian hybrids--from the pleasing Minoan snake goddesses to the depressing Gorgon, Echidna, Amazons, Eve, Melusine, Basilisk, Poison-Damsel, Catoblepas and Sadako/Samara--and gives the reader an opportunity to explore things that never happened but have always been.

Abstract: This edited collection examines culture and identity in Indian diaspora communities in Southeast Asia, and the UK. Using methodologies such as transnational and diaspora studies, history, autoethnography and family histories, the contributions here explore the movements of people from the Indian subcontinent across generations to a wide range of countries. Cultural practices including the use of performance, food, rituals, religion, education, employment, and names demonstrate how identities and practices are preserved, as well as adapted, in new contexts. This offers original insights into transnational movements of people, and how culture becomes a major part in the formation of a diaspora. The focus on Southeast Asia creates new knowledge by shifting the theoretical focus towards a region that shows great multiplicity in Indian migrant populations over a considerable period of time, but which has remained under-researched. The chapters on the UK act as a counterpoint to this, and contribute to the complex picture of shifting borders and practices across nations and generations.

Abstract: This concise volume presents a series of conversations conducted by its editor with internationally renowned educators, scholars and social critics. The primary focus is on a set of important social and cultural issues and the complex nature of the global contemporary crises in higher education and economics, and the values and goals educational institutions pursue and produce. Contributors to this volume discuss why the present systems of higher education are ailing almost everywhere, and which remedies have turned out to be their poison. The contributions here investigate how and why universities and the knowledge they seek have become hostages to an ideology based on neoliberalism, economism and a fundamentalism of the market. These ideologies have reshaped higher education and contributed to its commodification and commercialization, transforming educational institutions according to a model that originated in the domains of global business enterprises. Bureaucratization and the growth of a managerial class in higher education have led to universities that focus on what is purportedly marketable, while neglecting the commitment to the pursuit of truth, the education of character and the cultivation of civic values that informed older educational models. The contributors to this book argue, from many different angles, for resistance to these recent developments within higher education.

Abstract: In a fascinating analysis of the great psychological and sociological thinkers--including Freud, Maslow, McClelland, Durkheim, Skinner, Lewin and Mead--this erudite text challenges the models, myths and metaphors of modern psychology. Psychologists have promoted the view that human beings are the victims of internal and external forces, and have laboured to absorb free and responsible individuals into a pseudo-scientific framework that denies moral agency and thus renders them incapable of recognising notions of right and wrong. This book will appeal to anyone who has read enough psychology to have been perplexed and frustrated by its famous emperors. It demonstrates that if we take these naked emperors seriously and deny human freedom and personal responsibility, we shall have contributed to the undermining of our civilisation. With skill and verve, the book carries readers through an array of ideas to a 'purposive psychology' that enables individuals to gain insight into, and mastery of, themselves.

Abstract: This book questions the political tools and the basis upon which the values of an informed and objective communication rest, and that nowadays encompass most of the ordinary situations encountered in institutions. What is the fate of the involuntary drifts of communication, such as disturbances, misunderstandings and troubles, in the use of decision-making tools, participatory mechanisms, and the establishment of contractual procedures or informed consent practices? How do they open a discordant and potentially critical gap in the protocols and assessment and categorization measures that govern these institutions? How can the virtues of these drifts, whether in the exercise of sociological research or of scientific discovery be revalued? Crisis situations seem implicitly or explicitly to involve communicative issues. The efforts of normative framing of communication and of information formatting are then numerous. However, as this book shows, one can question not only the effectiveness of these efforts, but also how the actors receive them and how they transform the actual modalities of their communication processes.

Abstract: This book investigates the impact of creative writing tests on classroom practice in Pakistan. All National Education Policies in Pakistan since 1959 have expressed grave concern at the deteriorating standard of Board Examinations but no significant steps have been taken to improve the examination system. The method of assessment in the Pakistani classroom is influenced by the Board Examinations, with the students memorising the essays and stories from their textbooks and reproducing them. The Board Examination tends to produce negative washback as it damages learners' creative talents. Appropriate changes in the textbooks and the external examination, however, will, in turn, definitely improve the teaching and assessment practices in the classroom.

Abstract: Culture as a way of bringing meaning into life is maintained through discourse. In search of factors influencing discourse effectiveness, this volume brings together young scholars from Russia, France, Pakistan, Slovakia and Lebanon to focus on variation as an essential feature of meaning producing communication, in its multiple aspects and settings. The book is based on papers presented during online sessions on cross-cultural discourse, literary analysis and language education of the 7th International Young Researchers Conference "Studying and Teaching Philology" held in Ulyanovsk, Russia, in 2017. In Part I, Irina Zhuchkova explores variation in academic discourse on discourse. In the first two chapters of Part II Hibah Shabkhez discusses the interaction of various culture codes and transformations of a literary character travelling from one fictional world into another, and, in the next chapter, Hibah Shabkhez, Ibreez Shabkhez and Azka Mahboob analyse the divergence of stances taken on the same character by its creator and the readers. In the final chapters of this section, Ibreez Shabkhez and Maksim Duleba uncover mechanisms of expressing conflicting stances, with the result of marginalising discourse participants, including the stance-taker himself. Roksolana Povoroznyuk in Part III examines the interpreter's choices in mediating cross-cultural literary discourse, concentrating on paratranslational techniques and terminological variation, both of which involve a lot of translatorial freedom and responsibility. Finally, Part IV by Christelle Frangieh Fenianos addresses the issue of the second language learner's freedom in choosing the ways of acquiring vocabulary, which serves as a gate to the world of cross-cultural communication. This book will be of interest to researchers, postgraduate students and advanced undergraduates working in the...

Abstract: In an era of rapid globalisation, how can the changes that characterise how the social question is addressed in rich and emerging countries be analysed? How can one interpret the crisis in the Welfare State and the emergence of new social policies that push for the financial contribution of beneficiaries and the development of new forms of solidarity? What can be said about the world's poorest countries and their recurrent difficulty in benefiting from international aid to fight against poverty and ensure the protection of all people? This volume brings together 24 researchers from around the world to analyse a series of case studies of developed, emerging and developing countries. They study the evolution or decline observed in these countries and propose some answers to the issue of the way in which the economic model influences how the social question is taken into account around the world. A closer look reveals that the manner in which this question is addressed largely determines how the evolution of the world is perceived. While the contributors here highlight how capitalism makes it possible to reflect on the issue of social protection, they also show the limits of policies unable to guarantee this protection as soon as the economic situation can no longer allow countries to bear its costs.

Abstract: Prejudice is a multi-faceted concept that affects the relationships between individuals and groups and the creation of socially formed categories of ideas. It concerns race, religion, gender, social distinctions and political beliefs, and can be considered as a natural human process of out-group homogeneity, as well as the product of an authoritarian context or as a reaction against modernization or other symbolic or realistic threats. This volume defines the dynamics and policies of prejudice in the historical passage between the modern and contemporary age, bringing together articles by different scholars representing various disciplines, which allows an analysis of the different aspects of prejudice. The book includes interesting chapters on anti-Semitism, the ethnic conflicts of the twentieth century, Russia and the Balkans, and gender bias, among other subjects.

Abstract: This collection tackles the problems surrounding international migration, raising the question of the reasons for, and consequences of, being a migrant in the 21st century. Some of the issues it focuses on include migrant identities, integration, voting behavior, citizenship, and child health encountered in Europe and Turkey. The book also provides psychological, economic and micro-level analysis, together with social and judicial perspectives. In a global world, where in some places frontiers are constructed and in others efforts are made to deconstruct them, the book will appeal to sociologists, historians, political scientists and academics working on regional migration studies. It contributes to the endeavor to understand the global parameters on migration and potential solutions for a boundless global community.
