    Abstract: Gefühle beeinflussen unser Verhalten überall - auch in der Wissenschaft. Aber bei Forscher_innen sind Affekte suspekt: Sie werden als Störungen betrachtet, die eine objektive Arbeit gefährden. Dabei beeinflussen sie zwangsläufig den Forschungsprozess, weshalb ihre kritische Analyse ein fester Bestandteil wissenschaftlicher Tätigkeit sein sollte. Insbesondere die Feldforschung löst regelmäßig emotionale Reaktionen (etwa zu Kriegsgräuel, Diskriminierungen von Bevölkerungsgruppen oder sozialen Unterschieden) aus, welche die Beobachtung bedingen, das Verständnis beeinflussen und die Theoriebildung lenken. In den Beiträgen des Bandes werden fächerübergreifend eine Reihe textanalytischer und empirischer Methoden vorgeschlagen, mit deren Hilfe Emotionalität in der Forschung transparent gemacht werden kann

    Abstract: Wir leben in einer Welt, die sich immer schneller verändert; Globalisierung, Individualisierung, Ökonomisierung oder Mediatisierung sind Stichworte, unter denen dies diskutiert wird. Wie alle Sozialwissenschaften steht deshalb auch die empirische Kommunikationswissenschaft vor immer neuen Forschungsfragen und Forschungsfeldern. Viel stärker als bisher muss Forschung deshalb in Zukunft darauf angelegt sein, neue Bereiche konzeptionell und theoretisch zu erfassen. Dies aber nicht durch blinde Empirie, die sich in der Suche nach Verknüpfungen von immer neuen Variablen erschöpft. Und auch nicht durch reine Denkoperationen, wie alles auch sein könnte. Vielmehr müssen neue Theorien auf empirischer Grundlage entstehen. Dies leistet die heuristische Kommunikationsforschung, mit der sich der Band beschäftigen will. Sie greift unter anderem auf die Ethnographie als Forschungsstrategie zurück – insofern Kommunikation und Kultur eng zusammenhängen, hat Ethnographie in der Kommunikationsforschung bereits eine lange Geschichte. Und wie man konkrete Forschungsfragen durch die nachvollziehbare Konstruktion von empirisch gestützter Theorie beantwortet, zeigt die grounded theory nach Glaser und Strauss. In dem Text wird in diese Methoden sowohl konzeptionell als auch praktisch eingeführt.

    Abstract: Die Politik steckt in einer Legitimitätskrise. Im Zeitalter der „Postdemokratie“ mangelt es nicht an kritischen Zustandsbeschreibungen, die eine zunehmende Entfremdung der sogenannten Volksparteien von der Lebenswirklichkeit der Bürger thematisieren. Rückläufige Mitgliederzahlen, Rekrutierungsengpässe und sinkende Wahlbeteiligungen stehen der öffentlichen Selbstinszenierung von Parteien im Wahlkampf gegenüber. Über den tatsächlichen Zustand der Parteien sagt beides jedoch nur wenig aus. Wie funktioniert Parteileben heute? Was bewegt Hunderttausende von Mitgliedern an der Basis dazu, sich ehrenamtlich in Ortsvereinen zu engagieren? Wie gestaltet sich der politische Alltag in einem lokalen Parteibezirk? Diesen Fragen widmet sich die Studie von Jonathan Roth. Mit Hilfe eines qualitativ-ethnographischen Feldzugangs untersucht er am Beispiel eines SPD-Unterbezirks gegenwärtige Formen und Bedeutungen von lokaler Parteiarbeit im Zeitalter der professionalisierten Mediendemokratie.     Abstract: By presenting a history of Western ethnography of animism in East Timor during the Portuguese period, this intriguing study offers an original synthesis of the country`s history, culture and anthropology. The book consists of ten chapters, each one a narrative of the work and experience of a particular ethnographer. Covering a selection of seminal 19th- and 20th-century ethnographies, the author explores the relationship between spiritual beliefs, colonial administration, ethnographic interests and fieldwork experience. It is argued that the presence of outsiders precipitated a new `transformative animism` as colonial control over Portuguese Timor was consolidated. This came about because increasingly powerful outsiders posed threats and offered rewards to the Timorese just as the powerful ancestor spirits had long done; consequently, the Timorese ritualised their dealings with outsiders following their established model for appealing to spirits. Bringing colonial and professional ethnography into the one frame of reference, it is shown that ethnographers of both types not only bore witness to these processes of transformative animism, they also exemplified them.

    Abstract: Home to eighty thousand people, Accra`s Old Fadama neighbourhood is the largest illegal slum in Ghana. Though almost all its inhabitants are Ghanaian born, their status as illegal `squatters` means that they live a precarious existence, marginalised within Ghanaian society and denied many of the rights to which they are entitled as citizens.The case of Old Fadama is far from unique. Across Africa, over half the population now lives in cities, and a lack of affordable housing means that growing numbers live in similar illegal slum communities, often in appalling conditions. Drawing on rich, ethnographic fieldwork, the book takes as its point of departure the narratives that emerge from the everyday lives and struggles of these people, using the perspective offered by Old Fadama as a means of identifying wider trends and dynamics across African slums.Central to Stacey`s argument is the idea that such slums possess their own structures of governance, grounded in processes of negotiation between slum residents and external actors. In the process, Stacey transforms our understanding not only of slums, but of governance itself, moving us beyond prevailing state-centric approaches to consider how even a society`s most marginal members can play a key role in shaping and contesting state power.     Abstract: In Jesus for Zanzibar: Narratives of Pentecostal (Non-)Belonging, Islam, and Nation Hans Olsson offers an ethnographic account of the lived experience and socio-political significance of newly arriving Pentecostal Christians in the Muslim majority setting of Zanzibar. This work analyzes how a disputed political partnership between Zanzibar and Mainland Tanzania intersects with the construction of religious identities. Undertaken at a time of political tensions, the case study of Zanzibar`s largest Pentecostal church, the City Christian Center, outlines religious belonging as relationally filtered in-between experiences of social insecurity, altered minority / majority positions, and spiritual powers. Hans Olsson shows that Pentecostal Christianity, as a signifier of (un)wanted social change, exemplifies contested processes of becoming in Zanzibar that capitalizes on, and creates meaning out of, religious difference and ambient political tensions.     Abstract: Die Studie vereint Theoriebestände aus Verwaltungswissenschaft und Ethnologie zu einer neuen Erkenntnisperspektive auf Prozesse des state building in fragmentierten Nachkriegsgesellschaften und entwickelt eine Verwaltungsethnographie als methodischen Zugriff.Durch die Untersuchung der Interaktionen von Bürgern, Verwaltungsangehörigen und Mitgliedern internationaler Organisationen in der Stadt Mostar werden Prozesse der Gemeinschaftsbildung, Interessenartikulation und Herausbildung von Staatsideen und -formen sichtbar, die weder dem extern gestützten Ordnungsentwurf eines multi-ethnischen, konsensdemokratischen Staatswesens, noch den Vorstellungen lokaler Führungseliten von ethno-nationalen Gemeinschaften entsprechen.Auf Basis dieser Ethnographie argumentiert die Autorin für eine Loslösung vom akademischen und angewandten Paradigma des state building und zeigt neue Wege für eine reflexive, integrative Verwaltungswissenschaft auf, die lokal-global verflochtenes Regieren und Verwalten adressiert.
    Abstract: Combining theoretical debates in sociocultural anthropology and public administration scholarship, this study advances a novel heuristic framework for understanding state-building processes in fragmented, post-conflict societies and proposes a new, ethnographically informed methodology.Focusing on interactions between citizens, civil servants and members of international organisations in the city of Mostar, the study reveals how notions of community, the articulation of interests, as well as ideas and practices of statehood emerge, which neither correspond to consociational democratic statehood, as envisioned by the international community, nor to ideas of exclusive ethno-national communities, as propagated by political leaders.Using this ethnography, the author argues for abandoning the state-building paradigm of academic description or policy prescription and identifies new avenues for a reflexive, transdisciplinary approach to studying public administration in contemporary glocal contexts.

    Abstract: Bereits vor der Einschulung sind Bildung und ihre gezielte Förderung zentrale Themen im frühkindlichen Alltag. Vor diesem Hintergrund tragen entsprechende Orientierungen und Praktiken potentiell zur Genese sozialer Ungleichheit bei. Wie dies geschieht, untersucht die Autorin auf der Grundlage von drei ethnographischen Fallstudien mittels qualitativer Mehrebenenanalyse. Dabei zeigt sich, dass Eltern, ErzieherInnen, LehrerInnen und Kinder gemeinsam Ungleichheitsrelevanz herstellen und so Schaltstellen der Entstehung möglicher Vor- und Nachteile zwei- bis vierjähriger Kinder im luxemburgischen Bildungs- und Betreuungssystem schaffen.

    Abstract: Dieser Abschlussbericht ist das Ergebnis einer von Oktober 2016 bis Dezember 2017 durchgeführten Untersuchung zu Nutzungskonflikten in der Nördlichen Luisenstadt im Berliner Bezirk Mitte. Sie entstand in einer Kooperation zwischen Forscher:innen der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin und dem Präventionsrat des Bezirksamt Mitte von Berlin. Im Fokus standen Auswirkungen überwiegend vergnügungsorientierter Nutzungen des Stadtraums: Lärm, Verschmutzung, Straßenverkehrsbeeinträchtigungen sowie der Verkauf und Konsum von Betäubungsmitteln. Darüber hinaus wurden Aspekte wie Beteiligung und Verwaltungshandeln sowie Gewerbe und Tourismus behandelt. Der Abschlussbericht fasst die Forschungsergebnisse insbesondere in Form einer differenzierten Problembeschreibung zusammen und zeigt daran anknüpfende lösungsorientierte Handlungspotenziale auf. Darüber hinaus gibt er Auskunft über das Untersuchungsgebiet, die Ausgangslage und Fragestellung, die angewandten Methoden und die Rahmenbedingungen der Forschung.

    Abstract: West African history is inseparable from the history of the Atlantic slave trade and colonialism. According to historical archaeologist François Richard, however, the dominance of this narrative not only colors the range of political discourse about Africa but also occludes many lesser-known--but equally important--experiences of those living in the region. Reluctant Landscapes is an exploration of the making and remaking of political experience and physical landscapes among rural communities in the Siin province of Senegal between the late 1500s and the onset of World War II. By recovering the histories of farmers and commoners who made up African states' demographic core in this period, Richard shows their crucial--but often overlooked--role in the making of Siin history. The book also delves into the fraught relation between the Seereer, a minority ethnic and religious group, and the Senegalese nation-state, with Siin's perceived "primitive" conservatism standing at odds with the country's Islamic modernity. Through a deep engagement with oral, documentary, archaeological, and ethnographic archives, Richard's groundbreaking study revisits the four-hundred-year history of a rural community shunted to the margins of Senegal's national imagination.

    Abstract: The discovery of oil in Uganda in 2006 ushered in an oil-age era with new prospects of unforeseen riches. However, after an initial exploration boom developments stalled. Unlike other countries with major oil discoveries, Uganda has been slow in developing its oil. In fact, over ten years after the first discoveries, there is still no oil. During the time of the research for this book between 2012 and 2015, Uganda`s oil had not yet fully materialised but was becoming. The overarching characteristic of this research project was waiting for the big changes to come: a waiting characterised by indeterminacy. There is a timeline but every year it gets expanded and in 2018 having oil still seems to belong to an uncertain future. This book looks at the waiting period as a time of not-yet-ness and describes the practices of future- and resource-making in Uganda. How did Ugandans handle the new resource wealth and how did they imagine their future with oil to be? This ethnography is concerned with Uganda`s oil and the way Ugandans anticipated different futures with it: promising futures of wealth and development and disturbing futures of destruction and suffering. The book works out how uncertainty was an underlying feature of these anticipations and how risks and risk discourses shaped the imaginations of possible futures. Much of the talk around the oil involved the dichotomy of blessing or curse and it was not clear, which one the oil would be. Rather than adding another assessment of what the future with oil will be like, this book describes the predictions and prophesies as an essential part of how resources are being made. This ethnography shows how various actors in Uganda, from the state, the oil industry, the civil society, and the extractive communities, have tried to negotiate their position in the oil arena. Annika Witte argues in this book that by establishing their risks and using them as power resources actors can influence the becoming of oil as a resource and their own place in a petro-future. The book offers one of the first ethnographic accounts of Uganda`s oil and the negotiations that took place in an oil state to be.

    Abstract: THIS PRESENT THESIS concerns the lives of young men living in Swakopmund, Namibia: the 'uranium capital of the world'. The price of uranium on the international market depends in many ways on emotion and global sentiment - the way that geographically distant persons feel about nuclear things has an impact on the price-per-barrel of this radioactive sand. As such, changes in international regard for uranium and its associated industries - for example nuclear weapons or energy - have a deep impact at a local level, in places of extraction such as Swakopmund. This work is a study of men's relationships with others in the context of uranium mining; the geology of uranium inspires a deeper understanding of men's actions and feelings whilst also priming the notion of uranium as an actor itself. It is the first such work to explore a Namibian city located outside of the north of the country. It is focussed primarily on men, and especially on issues of relatedness and intimacy, questioning the forms that these take in Swakopmund as a city in which financial imbalance is exceptionally pronounced and also highly racialised, skewed in favour of European (white) settlers. Everyone in Swakopmund comes from elsewhere - with the exception of a very small minority - leaving behind the direct influence of the extended family. Away from extended kinship networks persons are, more-or-less, able to build the relationships that they want to, rather than following the wishes of their families. At the time of the fieldwork that this thesis is based on, the global price of uranium was significantly low, meaning that locally there were few full-time contracts available, with employment - when present - occurring largely on a temporary or short-term basis. As such, this dissertation places conceptions of relatedness and intimacy into the context of these global fluctuations, especially in terms of insecurity and risk. Rather than reinforce a notion of male hegemony, this work demonstrates that men are often subject to power structures which are not their own and that they are - more often than might be thought - scared, vulnerable and afraid. More than that, however, uranium is conceptualised as a monster, with various tentacles that reach out in order to grasp, influence and change parts of Namibian society in order to maintain its control over them. Each chapter is an exploration of one such tentacle, following the lines of different relationship types and situations in terms of the uranium industry itself, the home and family, formal and informal work, and friendship. In conclusion I point out that whilst geographical - and indeed, cultural - distance often hints at an intrinsic incommensurability between those who are 'here' and those who are 'there', the relationships formed by persons in Swakopmund are often not so geographically bound. A person's involvement in such an international market as that of uranium is clear evidence of that; uranium connects Swakopmund with those outside. Yet aside from working in industry, men also seek to make a multitude of new kin-connections, some of which remain local and some of which do not. By following the interpersonal and the intersubjective, this work sheds light on the new forms of intimacy and relatedness that manifest in Swakopmund and beyond. (Summary)

    Abstract: The discovery of oil in Uganda in 2006 ushered in an oil-age era with new prospects of unforeseen riches. However, after an initial exploration boom developments stalled. Unlike other countries with major oil discoveries, Uganda has been slow in developing its oil. In fact, over ten years after the first discoveries, there is still no oil. During the time of the research for this book between 2012 and 2015, Uganda`s oil had not yet fully materialised but was becoming. The overarching characteristic of this research project was waiting for the big changes to come: a waiting characterised by indeterminacy. There is a timeline but every year it gets expanded and in 2018 having oil still seems to belong to an uncertain future. This book looks at the waiting period as a time of not-yet-ness and describes the practices of future- and resource-making in Uganda. How did Ugandans handle the new resource wealth and how did they imagine their future with oil to be? This ethnography is concerned with Uganda`s oil and the way Ugandans anticipated different futures with it: promising futures of wealth and development and disturbing futures of destruction and suffering. The book works out how uncertainty was an underlying feature of these anticipations and how risks and risk discourses shaped the imaginations of possible futures. Much of the talk around the oil involved the dichotomy of blessing or curse and it was not clear, which one the oil would be. Rather than adding another assessment of what the future with oil will be like, this book describes the predictions and prophesies as an essential part of how resources are being made. This ethnography shows how various actors in Uganda, from the state, the oil industry, the civil society, and the extractive communities, have tried to negotiate their position in the oil arena. Annika Witte argues in this book that by establishing their risks and using them as power resources actors can influence the becoming of oil as a resource and their own place in a petro-future. The book offers one of the first ethnographic accounts of Uganda`s oil and the negotiations that took place in an oil state to be. (Verlagsangaben)

    Abstract: Der Klassenraum scheint der Ort zu sein, an dem Unterricht situativ entsteht. Die Relativierung dieses Allgemeinplatzes stellt für die vorliegende Arbeit den Ausgangspunkt dar: Es greift zu kurz, einzig die Schulen als Lokalitäten der Hervorbringung von Unterricht zu fokussieren. In den Unterricht werden Materialien der Industrie importiert, die entscheidende Rollen im Prozess des Machens von Lernen und Lehren übernehmen. In der Bildungswirtschaft sind außerschulische Akteurinnen und Akteure der schulischen Praxis zu vermuten. Im Zentrum steht die Frage nach dem Wie der Entwicklungspraktiken, mit denen innerhalb der Bildungswirtschaft Unterrichtsmaterialien verfertigt werden. Verfolgt wird dieses Erkenntnisinteresse am Beispiel der Entstehung sachunterrichtlicher Experimentierkoffer, mit denen naturwissenschaftliche Lern- und Bildungsprozesse in die Grundschule gebracht werden sollen. Die hiermit verbundenen Verhandlungen von Bezugswissenschaften, Unterricht, Kinderperspektiven u. a. werden ebenso analysierbar wie die Spezifik von schulischen Wissensformen. Dies offeriert Anschlüsse an die neuere Wissenschaftsforschung, Techniksoziologie, Didaktik sowie Erziehungswissenschaft

    Abstract: Diese Studie erkundet den Zusammenhang von Gender und Bilderpraktiken in Sanaa vor dem Hintergrund der globalen Zirkulation von Bildern. Von Geschlechtersegregation gekennzeichnet und an der Peripherie globaler Bilderproduktion liegend, bietet sich der Jemen für die Erforschung des Spannungsfelds von Bildern und Gender an. Betrachtet wird insbesondere, wie Jemenitinnen öffentliche Bilder entschleierter Frauen auf eigene Vorstellungen von Sittsamkeit und Unsichtbarkeit beziehen und wie öffentliches Erscheinen von Frauen verhandelt wird. Ein filmischer Zugang führt zur Betrachtung der performativen Dimension von Bildern. Gefilmte Mikrosituationen werden nach einem hermeneutischen Verfahren interpretiert, das sich am Prozess-, Interaktions- und Diskursverlauf der gefilmten sozialen Praxis orientiert. Sprache wird kontextualisiert und zu Bildern in Bezug gesetzt. Befunde zur Rolle des Umgangs mit Bildern bei der Geschlechterkonstitution offenbaren drei zentrale Themen. Erstens sind Bilderpraktiken von Frauen dynamische und konflikthafte Prozesse, in denen Frauen genderspezifische Räume und Rollen aushandeln. So werden beispielsweise jemenitische Frauen, die im Fernsehen erscheinen, dem Anderen zugeordnet, visuelle Elemente öffentlicher Bilder von Frauen werden heruntergespielt. Zweitens gefährden Bilder die Geschlechtersegregation. Indem das Verbot für Frauen, sich zu sehen zu geben, auch Bilder umfasst, wird das subversive und transgressive Potenzial von Bilderpraktiken deutlich. Es wird deutlich, dass sich hinter früheren wissenschaftlichen Befunden zum islamischen Bilderverbot teilweise genderbezogene Blickverbote verbergen. Drittens folgt die Suche jemenitischer Frauen nach dem eigenen Bild einer Dialektik von Sichtbarkeit und Unsichtbarkeit, denn oft erreichen Frauen öffentliche Sichtbarkeit durch die Repräsentation von Unsichtbarkeit. Diese Ergebnisse verdeutlichen die Notwendigkeit performativer Ansätze bei der Erforschung von Bildern und Medienpraxen.
    Abstract: This ethnographic study explores the intersection of gender and image usage in Sanaa, Yemen, against the background of the global circulation of images. Yemen is a gender-segregated society at the periphery of image production and provides a powerful context in which the phenomena of this intersectionality can be captured and analyzed. Of particular relevance is the means by which Yemeni women relate public images of unveiled women to their requirement of modesty in front of men outside their close families. Within this setting, the negotiation of women’s public appearance is studied. A filmic approach leads to a consideration of the performative dimensions of images. Filmed micro-situations are interpreted according to a hermeneutic method, informed by the procedural, interactive and discursive aspects of social practice. Using this methodology, spoken language is contextualized and related to image practices. Findings on the role of image practices in gender constitution concern three main themes. First, image practices are found to be dynamic and conflictual as gender-specific social spaces and roles are negotiated. For example, Yemeni women who appear on TV are often attributed to the Other, and on the level of language, visual elements of public images of women are downplayed. Second, images pose challenges for gender segregation. As prohibitions on women allowing themselves to be seen in person extend to their images, the subversive and transgressive potential of image practices become apparent. Interestingly, this reveals that some prohibitions on images in the Islamic context discussed by previous researchers are in fact gendered restrictions on looking at women. Finally, the search of Yemeni women for an image of self follows a dialectic between visibility and invisibility. Often those women who reach public visibility do so by representing invisibility. This work demonstrates the need for performative approaches to the study of images and media practices.

    Abstract: Globale und interdependente Phänomene rücken in den letzten 20 Jahren vermehrt ins Blickfeld der Kulturanthropologie. Ausgehend von ihrer fachspezifischen Methodik, der teilnehmenden Beobachtung, widmet sich die anthropologische Globalisierungsforschung nun vermehrt globalen Verbindungen und Machtverhältnissen. Basierend auf einer zweimonatigen Feldforschung im Norden Kameruns, diskutiert die Arbeit Verflochtene Stoffe – Ethnographie einer globalen Assemblage globale Interdependenzen und Globalisierungsprozesse an dem empirischen Beispiel des 2011 im Tschadbecken entstandenen informellen Baumwollhandels. Postkolonialen Theoretiker_innen folgend, analysiert die Arbeit die gegenwärtigen Globalisierungsprozesse vor dem Hintergrund kolonialer Ausbeutung und imperialer Herrschaft. Räumlich entfernte Akteur_innen und Institutionen haben im Kontext von Kolonialismus, Neokolonialismus und Neoliberalisierung den kamerunischen Baumwollsektor mitgeprägt und einen Einfluss auf das Leben der Baumwollproduzenten entwickelt. Auch aktuell findet der Verkauf von Baumwolle auf den globalisierten Rohstoffmärkten vor dem Hintergrund ungleicher Machtverhältnisse statt. Der kamerunische Baumwollproduzent scheint an keiner Stelle die Möglichkeit zu haben, aktiv an den Aushandlungsprozessen des offiziellen Baumwollhandels teilzunehmen. In diesem Kontext lässt sich der informelle Baumwollhandel, der von einem im Winter 2010/11 entstehenden transnationalen Netzwerk verschiedener Akteur_innen organisiert wurde und innerhalb weniger Monate den Verkauf von 26.000 Tonnen Baumwolle von Kamerun nach Nigeria ermöglichte, als Einschreiben in globale Aushandlungsprozesse verstehen. In der Arbeit findet somit eine Analyse wirtschaftlicher und politischer Prozesse statt, wobei auf die machtvollen Strukturen globaler Märkte, (neo)kolonialer Abhängigkeiten und der subalternen Position der Produzenten im globalen Süden eingegangen wird. Anhand des Phänomens des informellen Baumwollhandels wird aber auch deutlich, dass die Subalternen aktiv handelnde Akteur_innen der Globalisierung sind.
    Abstract: Over the last twenty years anthropology became more interested in global and interdependent phenomena. The emerging anthropological research on globalization processes often focusses on global connections and power relations while still following the discipline’s original method of participant observation. Based on a two month field research in the North of Cameroon, the Master thesis Entangled Cotton – An Ethnography of a Global Assemblage discusses global interdependencies and processes of globalization while focusing on the empirical example of informal cotton trade emerging in 2011 in the Chad Basin. Following postcolonial approaches, the paper analyses present globalization processes against the backdrop of colonial exploitation and imperial ruling. In the contexts of colonialism, neocolonialism and neoliberalization, different actors from very different geographical locations shaped the Cameroonian cotton sector and influenced the lives of cotton producers. While sharing the assumption that today’s cotton trade is shaped by the unequal power relations of a globalized market in which the Cameroonian cotton producers seem to have little chance to defend their interests, the paper goes on to argue that a temporarily emerging informal transnational cotton trade in the Chad Basin allowed the latter to actively take part in the negotiation processes. Based on a transnational network of diverse actors, the informal trade emerged in 2010/11 and allowed for around 26.000 tons of cotton to be exported from Cameroon to Nigeria in only a few months. The Master thesis analyses economical and political processes while focusing on the powerful structures of globalized markets, (neo)colonial dependencies and the subaltern position of producers in the global south. The analyzed phenomena of informal transnational cotton trade thereby shows how subalterns are active agents of globalization processes.

    Abstract: Do it! Yourself? - Selbermachen ist eine Praxis mit wechselnden Konjunkturen und Slogans. Dieser Band zielt auf die kritische Revision des Phänomens und liegt damit quer zu (markt-)gängigen Texten, die sich vielfach im Lob und in Anleitungen erschöpfen.Die Autor_innen befassen sich empirisch fundiert mit dem Wechselspiel zwischen Diskursen und Praktiken des Selbermachens. Zentral ist dabei die Kontextualisierung mikrologischer Befunde mit makrostrukturellen Dimensionen dieses Handelns unterschiedlichster Akteur_innen - die Beispiele reichen vom 3D-Druck im palästinensischen Flüchtlingscamp über urbane Imkerei in Deutschland bis hin zum digitalen Selbstversuch
    Abstract: 'Do it yourself'? - DIY is a practice with shifting conjunctures and slogans. This volume attempts to provide a critical revision of the phenomenon, and as such, is at odds with the standard (marketable) texts, which often amount to nothing more than praise and instructions. In an empirical fashion, the authors here deal with the interplay between the discourses and practices of DIY. Central to this is the contextualization of the micro-logical findings with the macro-structural dimensions of these activities, from the most diverse individuals - the examples range from 3D-printing in Palestinian refugee camps to urban beekeeping in Germany, right up to bicycle building in Budapest

    Abstract: The contribution of German ethnography to Australian anthropological scholarship on Aboriginal societies and cultures has been limited, primarily because few people working in the field read German. But it has also been neglected because its humanistic concerns with language, religion and mythology contrasted with the mainstream British social anthropological tradition that prevailed in Australia until the late 1960s. The advent of native title claims, which require drawing on the earliest ethnography for any area, together with an increase in research on rock art of the Kimberley region, has stimulated interest in this German ethnography, as have some recent book translations. Even so, several major bodies of ethnography, such as the 13 volumes on the cultures of northeastern South Australia and the seven volumes on the Aranda of the Alice Springs region, remain inaccessible, along with many ethnographically rich articles and reports in mission archives. In 18 chapters, this book introduces and reviews the significance of this neglected work, much of it by missionaries who first wrote on Australian Aboriginal cultures in the 1840s. Almost all of these German speakers, in particular the missionaries, learnt an Aboriginal language in order to be able to document religious beliefs, mythology and songs as a first step to conversion. As a result, they produced an enormously valuable body of work that will greatly enrich regional ethnographies.

    Abstract: The prison is a recent invention, hardly more than two centuries old, yet it has become the universal system of punishment. How can we understand the place that the correctional system occupies in contemporary societies? What are the experiences of those who are incarcerated as well as those who work there? To answer these questions, Didier Fassin conducted a four-year-long study in a French short-stay prison, following inmates from their trial to their release. He shows how the widespread use of imprisonment has reinforced social and racial inequalities and how advances in civil rights clash with the rationales and practices used to maintain security and order. He also analyzes the concerns and compromises of the correctional staff, the hardships and resistance of the inmates, and the ways in which life on the inside intersects with life on the outside. In the end, the carceral condition appears to be irreducible to other forms of penalty both because of the chain of privations it entails and because of the experience of meaninglessness it comprises. Examined through ethnographic lenses, prison worlds are thus both a reflection of society and its mirror. At a time when many countries have begun to realize the impasse of mass incarceration and question the consequences of the punitive turn, this book will provide empirical and theoretical tools to reflect on the meaning of punishment in contemporary societies.

    Abstract: Sri Lanka's conflict and peace processes have gained global attention during recent years. This book presents a comprehensive insight into the politics of reconstruction and development in Sri Lanka, focussing on the ceasefire which was negotiated between the Government of Sri Lanka and the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in 2002 and which lasted until 2006. Based on extensive empirical fieldwork, the book provides a unique ethnographic account of this specific historical period of peace. It explains how development was shaped by interplay and cooperation, but also by the disparities and conflicts between a variety of local and intervening actors, including local organizations and civil society, LTTE, Government of Sri Lanka, international development cooperation and the Tamil diaspora. Starting from an interdisciplinary viewpoint, the author integrates findings from development sociology with new perspectives on transnationalization and the migration-development-nexus. This provides a fine grained analysis of the emerging development visions and perspectives in relation to transnationalization and global interconnectedness. Making an innovative contribution by linking the analysis of local reconstruction with contemporary phenomena of transnationalization, diasporization, and globalization, this book will appeal to those with an interest in Sociology, Social Anthropology and Political Science

    Abstract: In Bali in the Early Nineteenth Century, Helen Creese examines the nature of the earliest sustained cross-cultural encounter between the Balinese and the Dutch through the eyewitness accounts of Pierre Dubois, the first colonial official to live in Bali. From 1828 to 1831, Dubois served as Civil Administrator to the Badung court in southern Bali. He later recorded his Balinese experiences for the Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences in a series of personal letters to an anonymous correspondent. This first ethnography of Bali provides rich, perceptive descriptions of early nineteenth-century Balinese politics, society, religion and culture.     Abstract: From March 2009 Statistical Research Inc. (USA), Nexus Heritage (UK) and the Institut Fondamental d'Afrique Noire (Dakar, Senegal) jointly undertook an integrated programme of cultural heritage research and investigation in the Sabodala area of Senegal. This was part of an environmental and social impact assessment in compliance with Senegalese law and international best practice. The principal investigators were Jeff Altschul (SRI) Gerry Wait (Nexus) and Ibrahima Thiaw (IFAN). This report is the outcome of those investigations and makes a significant contribution to the archaeology and ethnography of eastern Senegal. Combining ethnographic and archaeological data yields a picture of a period of intense social change that occurred at the end of the nineteenth century and extended well into the mid-twentieth century. This involved the overturning of previous norms by social groups of mixed ethnicity, who proceeded to create new social work-arounds for previous ethnic prohibitions. It also probably involved the final end to slavery, but possibly only within living memory. It seems likely that some sites-archaeological as well as traditional sacred properties-provide tangible links between the current villages and a highly contested and emotionally charged past. To paraphrase the American novelist, William Faulkner, the past in Sabodala is never dead; in fact, it's not even past.

    Abstract: Les premières années du vingtième siècle sont fertiles en moments, événements et publications qui, rétrospectivement, dénotent tous la recomposition en cours de la « science de l`homme », comme l`appelaient alors ses protagonistes. Une effervescence institutionnelle caractérise ce champ scientifique qui voit une autonomisation accrue de plusieurs disciplines marquant chacune leur territoire et leurs ambitions, parallèlement à un affaiblissement du magistère de l`anthropologie physique. Dans la division du travail scientifique, la pratique ethnographique gagne progressivement en légitimité. L`intensité des débats sur les origines et les formes des religions primitives bouscule la théologie catholique, en même temps qu`elle fait entendre une analyse savante et laïque des phénomènes religieux grâce à une attention grandissante accordée aux matériaux ethnographiques qui viennent nourrir la réflexion des historiens des religions, sociologues, philosophes, préhistoriens, anthropologues et linguistes.S`il s`agit bien d`une histoire disciplinaire qui est ici esquissée, elle tente de dépasser ce strict découpage pour rappeler que l`anthropologie fut au croisement de nombreuses disciplines qui ont également contribué à son émergence et à sa reconnaissance. Par ses multiples coups de sonde dans ce champ scientifique très dynamique, 1913, la recomposition de la science de l`homme propose un état des lieux certes incomplet mais suggestif des tensions, des enjeux, des rapports de force, des dialogues, des pratiques scientifiques, qui le structurent et l`animent. Les différents auteurs rassemblés ici font le pari de la pertinence heuristique de l`approche situationnelle, contextuelle, institutionnelle, pour une histoire de l`anthropologie qui s`intéresserait tout à la fois aux idées, aux revues, aux institutions de savoir, aux réseaux de sociabilité savante, aux acteurs qui n`eurent pas tous l`heur d`être sacrés pères fondateurs de la discipline.

    Abstract: Als Michael Brown sich 1976 bei den Awajún ansiedelte, kannte er kaum mehr als Gerüchte über sie. Ihren Vorfahren eilte der Ruf voraus, grausame Kopfjäger zu sein. Als junger und unerfahrener Ethnologe war Brown beeindruckt von der Lebhaftigkeit und dem Einfallsreichtum seiner Gastgeber. Doch seine Forschungen führten ihn auch in die dunklen Abgründe einer Welt, in der Blutrache, Angst vor Hexerei und Selbstmorde an der Tagesordnung waren. Der bewaffnete Aufstand der Gruppierung Leuchtender Pfad in den 1980er Jahren zwang den Autor dazu, seine Arbeit an anderer Stelle fortzuführen. Jahrzehnte später nahm er die frühen Aufzeichnungen wieder zur Hand und entdeckte - nun mit dem erfahreneren und klareren Blick auf die brüchigen Strukturen des sozialen Miteinanders - noch eine andere Geschichte. Sie handelt davon, wie eine Stammesgesellschaft, gelegentlich erfolglos, versucht, im Angesicht der immer näher rückenden Grenzen eines expandierenden Kapitalismus die eigene gesellschaftliche Ordnung zu bewahren. Neugierig, wie es den Awajún in der Zwischenzeit ergangen war, kehrte Brown deswegen 2012 an die Stätte zurück, wo er einst ein Volk fand, dessen streitlustiges Selbstbewusstsein es an die Spitze des südamerikanischen Kampfes für die Rechte indigener Völker gebracht hatte.Mit Sensibilität und Humor zeichnet Stromaufwärts diese Entwicklung nach, in deren Verlauf ein schnell wachsendes Volk seine althergebrachten Traditionen einer Kriegerkultur den veränderten Anforderungen des 21. Jahrhunderts anpasst. Technisch versiert nutzen die Awajún den hart erkämpften politischen Einfluss, um ihre Heimat im Regenwald und ihr Recht auf Selbstbestimmung zu verteidigen.

    Abstract: This Memoir is the life-long collection of work from anthropologist Kenneth D. Tollefson, who came to the Pacific Northwest in 1965 to teach at Seattle Pacific University. Over the years, Dr. Tollefson found time to assist several Pacific Northwest tribes in their struggles to perpetuate and retain tribal autonomy. In this Memoir, Dr. Tollefson presents his work with three Northwest groups; the Tlingit on the coast of present-day Alaska; the Snoqualmie, who live on the western slope of the Cascades east of Seattle; and the Dumwamish [sic!], who live at and near Seattle on the western shores of Puget Sound in the south Salish Sea.
