Abstract:
Byzanz, Konstantinopel, Istanbul: drei Namen für eine der facettenreichsten Metropolen dieser Welt. Man sieht in ihr die "Stadt zwischen Kulturen und Kontinenten", die "Stadt zwischen Asien und Europa", die "Stadt zwischen Orient und Okzident" und auch die "Stadt zwischen Abendland und Morgenland". Istanbul steht derzeit wie kaum eine andere Stadt stereotyp für viele (un-)gelöste gesellschaftliche Fragen. Sebastian Gietl fokussiert diese Fragen exemplarisch über beide Grenzen des 20. Jahrhunderts hinweg und veranschaulicht im Spiegel der Reiseliteratur sich ergebende Folgen für die Bilder der Stadt.
