    Abstract: Ruling Women is the first study of its kind devoted to an analysis of the debate concerning government by women in seventeenth-century France. Drawing on a wide range of political, feminist and dramatic texts, Conroy sets out to demonstrate that the dominant discourse which upholds patriarchy at the time is frequently in conflict with alternative discourses which frame gynæcocracy as a feasible, and laudable reality, and which reconfigure (wittingly or unwittingly) the normative paradigm of male authority. Central to the argument is an analysis of how the discourse which constructs government as a male prerogative quite simply implodes when juxtaposed with the traditional political discourse of virtue ethics. In Government, Virtue, and the Female Prince in Seventeenth-Century France, the first volume of the two-volume study, the author examines the dominant discourse which excludes women from political authority before turning to the configuration of women and rulership in the pro-woman and egalitarian discourses of the period. Highly readable and engaging, Conroy’s work will appeal to those interested in the history of women in political thought and the history of feminism, in addition to scholars of seventeenth-century literature and history of ideas

    Abstract: This book explores professional women’s experiences of gender in the Taiwanese workplace in the wake of the rapid transformation of the country's economy, identifying attitudes to gender in a heterosexist and heteronormative social culture. It contributes to understanding women’s relationships with their superiors and peers at work and the strategies that they have used to negotiate with these role partners to achieve their own personal and career goals. It notes that compared to women in other East Asian economies, women in Taiwan have a more consistent career trajectory and that the local women’s movement and activism has brought Taiwan a long way in improving women’s employment rights, but argues that it is too soon to claim that gender inequality has been banished from the workplace. Based on qualitative, in-depth interviews, the book explores the participants’ accounts, gendered and heteronormative practices at work, in two contexts: organisational management and everyday social encounters. It investigates gender inequality at work by focusing on women employees’ everyday experiences, and examines structural and institutional factors affecting gendered arrangements, as well as personal experiences in negotiating gender. A key read for students and scholars in in gender and employment studies, this book will also be of interest to those working within the field of employment sociology and organisational culture

The most prolific of these changes can be seen within contact arrangements, particularly those that are not managed by an intermediary, between adopted minors and their biological kin. Within this shift, it becomes clear that this often-breached contact arrangement lends itself towards discussions about further openness within adoption. At the same time these technologies continue to document the way adopted individuals and their biological kin feel about themselves and each other. It is for these reasons that the Internet remains both a promise and threat.     Abstract: Das Lehrbuch erläutert die Durchführung und Interpretation von klassischen Regressionsanalysen (nach der OLS-Methode) und von logistischen Regressions­analysen (nach der ML-Methode). Im Text wird insbesondere auf die Überprüfung der Anwendungsvoraussetzungen von Regressionsschätzungen eingegangen. Auch werden typische Fehlschlüsse und häufig anzutreffende Fehlinterpretationen behandelt (u.a. bei Determinationskoeffizienten, bei standardisierten Regressionskoeffi­zienten und bei zentrierten Effekten). Zudem werden erweiterte Verfahren wie z.B. Teststärkeanalysen, Regressionen mit Dummy-Variablen und Modellschätzungen mit Moderator- und Mediatorvariablen erläutert. Die Form der Darstellung ist praxisorientiert. Alle Verfahren werden an Beispielen erläutert (inkl. der für die Praxis erforderlichen SPSS-Anweisungen). Neu in der fünften Auflage sind (u.a.): Regressionsanalyse bei fehlenden Werten Bootstrapping in der Regressionsanalyse Berechnung durchschnittlicher marginaler Effekte (AME) mit SPSS.     Abstract: This book examines the gun-related policy responses to three school shooting incidents in the United States. Gun violence prevention activists and others involved in policy making were interviewed for the book, and news media articles and policy documents were critically assessed. As a result, interpretations of the Second Amendment are shown to affect the acceptability of certain gun restrictions. News media content and policy documents, coupled with the thoughts of activists, also give an indication of why certain policy measures passed and others failed at the time of each of the case studies. This book should be of interest to social policy, politics, criminology and sociology students and academics, as well as those with a general interest in the topic

    Abstract: This book examines the institutional development of Chinese sociology from the 1890s to the present. It plots the discipline’s twisting path in the Chinese context, from early Western influences; through the institutionalization of the discipline in the 1930s-40s; its problematic relationship with socialism and interruptions under Marxist orthodoxy and the Cultural Revolution; its revival during the 1980s-90s; to the twin trends of globalization and indigenization in current Chinese sociological scholarship. Chen argues that in spite of the state-building agenda and persistent efforts to indigenize the discipline, the Western model remains pervasively influential, due in large part to the influence of American missionaries, foundations and scholars in the formation and transformation of the Chinese sociological tradition. The history of Chinese sociology is shown to be a contingent process in which globally circulated knowledge, above all the American sociological tradition, has been adapted to the changing contexts of China. This engaging work contributes an important country study to the history of sociology and will appeal to scholars of Chinese history and disciplinary historiography, in addition to social scientists.

    Abstract: As scholars have by now long contended, global neoliberalism and the violence associated with state restructuring provide key frameworks for understanding flows of people across national boundaries and, eventually, into the treacherous terrains of the United States borderlands. The proposed volume builds on this tradition of situating migration and migrant death within broad, systems-level frameworks of analysis, but contends that there is another, perhaps somewhat less tidy, but no less important sociopolitical story to be told here. Through examination of how forensic scientists define, navigate, and enact their work at the frontiers of US policy and economics, this book joins a robust body of literature dedicated to bridging social theory with bioarchaeological applications to modern day problems. This volume is based on deeply and critically reflective analyses, submitted by individual scholars, wherein they navigate and position themselves as social actors embedded within and, perhaps partially constituted by, relations of power, cultural ideologies, and the social structures characterizing this moment in history. Each contribution addresses a different variation on themes of power relations, production of knowledge, and reflexivity in practice. In sum, however, the chapters of this book trace relationships between institutions, entities, and individuals comprising the landscapes of migrant death and repatriation and considers their articulation with sociopolitical dynamics of the neoliberal state

    Abstract: Der Band widmet sich einer aktuellen Bestandsaufnahme und Reflexion der Situation ostdeutscher Großwohnsiedlungen. Er zeigt, dass deren Entwicklungstrends kaum verallgemeinert werden können. Vielmehr sind ihre Anpassungsfähigkeit und damit „Haltbarkeit“ zu betonen. Das Ziel bestand darin, die Aufmerksamkeit sowohl der akademischen Debatte als auch der praktischen Wohnungswirtschaft und Wohnungspolitik auf die mittel- bis langfristigen Perspektiven zu verstärken. Der Band will ein grundsätzliches Verständnis für die differenzierten Typen von Großwohnsiedlungen schaffen und Handlungsoptionen jenseits der aktuellen Programmatik der Städtebauförderung ausloten. Ausgangspunkt ist die derzeitige Veränderung der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung: Nach einer intensiven Auseinandersetzung um Konzepte des Abrisses und Rückbaus sowie punktueller Aufwertung in den Jahren des Stadtumbaus ist es um die Großwohnsiedlungen inzwischen ruhiger geworden. Die Gründe hierfür sind vielfältig – sie mögen im Stabilisierungserfolg einiger größerer ostdeutscher Städte, insbesondere Universitätsstädte, liegen. Diese sind mittlerweile durch Einwohnerwachstum und Knappheit an bezahlbarem Wohnraum gekennzeichnet. Hier erscheinen die Großwohnsiedlungen nicht mehr existenziell bedroht. Eine andere Sachlage ist in kleineren Städten zu beobachten, wo die Wohnungsbestände in den randstädtischen Siedlungen weiterhin von Leerstand geprägt sind und der Wohnungsabriss fortgesetzt wird. Dennoch: Ostdeutsche Großwohnsiedlungen bleiben weiterhin interessante Orte differenzierter sozialräumlicher und demographischer Entwicklung. Ihre Bedeutung wird voraussichtlich wieder zunehmen, da die Herausforderungen im Zuge knappen, preiswerten Wohnraums, innerstädtischer Verdrängung und gestiegener Zuwanderung anwachsen werden. Dadurch gewinnen bekannte Fragen des Zusammenlebens und Interagierens im Wohnumfeld, der Inanspruchnahme von sozialer und technischer Infrastruktur und der Einbettung der Großwohnsiedlungen in gesamtstädtische Entwicklungsziele erneut an Aufmerksamkeit. Diese Themen werden am Beispiel einer Reihe von Großwohnsiedlungen eingehend beleuchtet. Um die geographische Dimension zu weiten, sind zwei Beiträge zu Perspektiven tschechischer und polnischer Großwohnsiedlungen im Band enthalten. Die Herausgeber Dr. Uwe Altrock ist Professor für Stadterneuerung und Stadtumbau an der Universität Kassel. Dr. Nico Grunze arbeitet freiberuflich im Bereich Stadtentwicklung. Dr. Sigrun Kabisch ist Professorin am Helmholtz-Zentrum für Umweltforschung – UFZ in Leipzig.

    Abstract: This book explores the growing up experiences of gay and lesbian individuals within their homes, schools, neighbourhoods, among friends; and their journeys of finding themselves and their communities while living in a heterosexually constructed society. It is based on an exploratory, qualitative study with young gay and lesbian persons in two cities of Maharashtra, India and employs a life course perspective. The author has written this book from two primary loci: those of a mental health professional and activist, and a queer feminist activist. Through layered narratives and psychosocial analyses of experiences that are simultaneously attentive to subjectivities and to social and interpersonal processes, the author provides insights into the lives of children who grow up feeling ‘different’ from their siblings, peers and friends, and receive constant messages about correct ways of being and expression from their parents, teachers, friends and counsellors/doctors; the unique challenges to growing up as gay or lesbian, alongside complex processes involved in the decision of ‘coming out’; and the experience of meeting others like oneself, forming intimate, romantic relationships, bonds of friendship, political solidarity, families of choice and so on. In this book, the author employs a critical stance towards mainstream life span development studies, developmental psychology, child development and childhood studies that make universal assumptions of heteronormativity and gender binarism.     Abstract: Andreas Matzner zeigt in der empirischen Studie das „Innenleben“ eines Jugendamtes über die ethnografische Beobachtung und Rekonstruktion von alltäglichen Arbeitssituationen in einem Allgemeinen Sozialen Dienst auf. Forschungsmethodisch nutzt der Autor eigene Verstrickungen im Feld und untersucht mittels einer starken Teilnahme systematisch den Vollzug sozialer Praktiken in dieser Behörde. Im Zentrum der praxistheoretisch gestalteten Analyse stehen Tür- und Angelgespräche zwischen ASD-Fachkräften im Büro, anhand derer erklärt wird, wie professionsinterne Spezifika die Auseinandersetzungen der Fachkräfte mit den Anforderungen und Problematiken ihrer Arbeit abseits von formellen Verfahren strukturieren und welche Themen und Fragestellungen jugendamtliche Praktiken zwischen Tür und Angel dominieren.     Abstract: This book explores the specifically human dimensions of the problem posed by a new generation of invasive pests and pathogens to tree health worldwide. The growth in global trade and transportation in recent decades, along with climate change, is allowing invasive pests and pathogens to establish in new environments, with profound consequences for the ecosystem services provided by trees and forests, and impacts on human wellbeing. The central theme of the book is to consider the role that social science can play in better understanding the social, economic and environmental impacts of such tree disease and pest outbreaks. Contributions include explorations of how pest outbreaks are socially constructed, drawing on the historical, cultural, social and situated contexts of outbreaks; the governance and economics of tree health for informing policy and decision-making; stakeholder engagement and communication tools; along with more philosophical approaches that draw on environmental ethics to consider 'non-human' perspectives. Taken together the book makes theoretical, methodological and applied contributions to our understanding of this important subject area and encourages researchers from across the social sciences and humanities to bring their own disciplinary perspectives and expertise to address the complexity that is the human dimensions of forest and tree health.     Abstract: Das vorliegende Jahrbuch blickt reflektierend auf 25 Jahre Stadterneuerung zurück, zieht Bilanz und zeigt Zukunftsperspektiven auf. Im Jahr der deutschen Wiedervereinigung fand sich mit dem Arbeitskreis Stadterneuerung an deutschsprachigen Hochschulen eine Gruppe von Fachleuten zusammen, die durch die Herausgabe eines „Jahrbuchs Stadterneuerung“ zu einer Institutionalisierung der fachlichen Debatte über Stadterneuerung beitragen wollten. Dabei bezogen sie sich auf ein zwar nicht mehr junges, aber erst wenige Jahre zuvor leitbildhaft konsolidiertes Feld der Stadtentwicklung. Mit der Herausbildung der „behutsamen Stadterneuerung“ hatte sich nach längeren Auseinandersetzungen in den 1980er Jahren in der alten Bundesrepublik ein Ansatz weitgehend durchgesetzt, der sowohl die städtebaulich-architektonische Substanz als auch die vorhandenen Nutzungen und Bewohner/innen besonders respektiert. Er verkörpert damit einen wesentlichen Ausdruck einer Wende in der Stadtplanung, bei der das rationale Planungsmodell durch ein eher kommunikatives ersetzt oder zumindest ergänzt, das Gott-Vater-Modell von Planung stark in Frage gestellt sowie die städtebaulich-architektonischen Leitbilder der „Moderne“ durch Prinzipien einer „Nachmoderne“ ersetzt wurden.     Abstract: Der vorliegende Band beschäftigt sich mit einem Schlüsselbegriff der Zukunftspsychologie: Veränderung. Sie ist allgegenwärtig – und wird doch oft erst im Rückblick wahrgenommen. Zentrale Motivationsfaktoren wie persönliche und berufliche Weiterentwicklung verweisen auf die konstruktive Seite von Veränderungsprozessen, die Freiheit und Einflussnahme ermöglichen. Ein gesellschaftliches Klima zunehmender Unübersichtlichkeit und beschleunigten Wandels erzeugt dagegen vor allem Zukunftsangst und Veränderungsmüdigkeit. In einer Pilotstudie mit dreißig qualitativen Einzelinterviews und einer anschließenden stärker quantitativ ausgerichteten Querschnittstudie mit 1950 Befragten erkundet die Veränderungsstudie die Fragen: Wie haben die Teilnehmenden zentrale Veränderungen in ihrem Leben erlebt und bewältigt? Welche Kompetenzen haben sie dafür benötigt und eingesetzt? Wie kann Veränderung erfolgreich gelebt und umgesetzt werden? Furcht und Ratlosigkeit angesichts der unbekannten Zukunft sind in einer Zeit der wahrscheinlich markantesten Veränderungen in der Weltgeschichte existenzgefährdend. Daher ist es unabdingbar, sich mit dem Ablauf von Veränderungsprozessen zu beschäftigen, um aus erprobten Strategien und Mustern zu lernen.     Abstract: Markus Baum widmet sich zweier Begründungs- und Theorieformen: der Kommunikationstheorie Habermas’ und der älteren Kritischen Theorie.     Abstract: Katrin Winkler zeigt am Beispiel der Bundes- und Berliner Landesebene, wie der repräsentative Politikprozess partizipativer und dennoch effektiv gestaltet werden kann. Grundlage ist eine Synthese aus der pragmatistischen Demokratiekonzeption von Archon Fung und dem empirischen Forschungsprogramm der kriterienbasierten Evaluation demokratischer Innovationen. Dabei werden demokratie- und engagementpolitische Handlungsempfehlungen entwickelt. Gleichwohl ist die Arbeit als eine pragmatistisch angeleitete Konzeptstudie für die Entwicklung einer beteiligungsorientierten Praxis in der repräsentativen Demokratien zu verstehen, die trotz ihres theoretischen Charakters die notwendige empirische Orientierung aufweist – ganz im Sinne des Pragmatismus.     Abstract: This book examines Steve Fuller’s pioneering vision of social epistemology. It focuses specifically on his work post-2000, which is founded in the changing conception of humanity and project into a ‘post-‘ or ‘trans-‘ human future. Chapters treat especially Fuller’s provocative response to the changing boundary limitations of the knower due to anticipated changes in humanity coming from the nanosciences, neuroscience, synthetic biology and computer technology and end on an interview with Fuller himself. While Fuller’s turn in this direction has invited at least as much criticism as his earlier work, to him the result is an extended sense of the knower, or ‘humanity 2.0’, which Fuller himself identifies with transhumanism. The authors assess Fuller’s work on the following issues: Science and Technology Studies (STS), agent-oriented social epistemology, the university and intellectual life, neo-liberal political economy, intelligent design, Cosmism, Gnosticism, proactionary vs precautionary principles and Welfare State 2.0

    Abstract: Covering India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Nepal, Rethinking New Womanhood effectively introduces a ‘new’ wave of gender research from South Asia that resonates with feminist debates around the world. The volume conceptualises ‘new womanhood’ as a complex, heterogeneous and intersectional identity. By deconstructing classification systems and highlighting women’s everyday ongoing negotiations with boundaries of social categories, the book reconfigures the concept of ‘new woman’ as a symbolic identity denoting ‘modern’ femininity at the intersection of gender, class, culture, sexuality and religion in South Asia. The collection maps new sites and expressions on women and gender studies around nationhood, women’s rights, transnational feminist solidarity, ‘new girlhoods ’, aesthetic and sexualised labour, respectability and ‘modernity’, LGBT discourses, domestic violence and ‘new’ feminisms.
