Abstract: "Historians and sociologists have been consistently - albeit gloomily - enthralled by Max Weber's model of the inevitable rise of the neurocrat. However, literary critics positively boast that writers, like academics, cannot 'do admin'. While Weber's thesis about the rise of the entrepreneur - all fire, individuality, thrust - is in tune with what we think literature is about, his thesis about the rise of the bureaucrat is not, yet 'creative bureaucracy' is not only a euphemism for bending the rules. Literature in the Public Service shows how the public service makes its workers original, taking them beyond an individuated point of view to imagine the perfect public system. Creativity theorists too have swapped the model of solitary inspiration for a managed creative environment. John Milton, Anthony Trollope, and David Hare are examples of how authors work in and write about the public service, during its crisis moments"--

Abstract: "How are responses to urban policy challenges affected by new ideas about governance? How can we explain the governance transformations that result? And what are the consequences for democracy? This wide-ranging study of three European cities - Birmingham, Copenhagen and Rotterdam - shows how hybrid forms of governance emerge from the tensions between new visions and past legacies, and existing institutional arrangements and powerful actors. Hybrid governance includes public-private partnerships, stakeholders boards, and multi-actor forums operating at arm's length to institutions of representative democracy. Offering detailed studies of migration and neighbourhood policy, as well as a novel Q methodology analysis of public administrators' views on democracy, the book explores how actors generate new practices, shows how these develop, and evaluates the democratic implications. The book concludes that hybrid governance is both widespread and diverse, is spatially and policy specific and that actors - public managers, politicians and the public - contribute to hybrid designs in ways that promote and challenge democratic conventions."--Publisher's website

Abstract: "Youth Ethnic and National Identity in Bosnia and Herzegovina offers a unique insight into the ethnic relations of contemporary Bosnia and Herzegovina by providing a wealth of new primary data on the Bosnian-Herzegovinian youth attitudes. The study utilizes both quantitative and qualitative research techniques such as large scale surveys, focus groups, interviews and discourse analysis among others. The data are interpreted in accordance with the theoretical models drawn from different academic disciplines including social psychology, cultural studies, linguistics, sociology, anthropology and social and political theory. In exploring the social context of living in post-conflict societies such as Bosnia and Herzegovina and the social and psychological research on the phenomenon of ethnicity, this book reveals a society of sharp, constitution-embedded ethnic divisions, which are maintained through different aspects of social and individual lives; by being politicized, one's ethnicity also became a relevant point of reference in everyday life, focusing people's lives on ethno-driven cognition, emotions, and behaviour. Furthermore, through the study of ethnic identity of youth in Bosnia-Herzegovina, this book analyzes how ethnic identity is constructed through social relations, communication, social perception, and political attitudes among young people"..

Abstract: "Contemporary international migration makes border controls, bounded citizenship, and sovereign jurisdictions appear increasingly outdated. These policy tools are poor responses to a world characterized by cross-border mobility, transnational interconnections and global diaspora. Are there viable alternatives to this system of territorial and exclusive states? This book takes a historical trajectory, exploring governments' use of different territorial strategies to manage migration at specific moments during the evolution of the international system, from centralization in Renaissance Italy and expansion under the British Empire to the integration of the European Union. Vigneswaran shows how under each of these regimes, political thinkers and rulers draw upon a 'mental map' - a specific way of imagining political space - to devise their systems of jurisdiction, belonging and immigration control. Using evidence of territorial variation and reform, this book looks to the future of migration regimes beyond the territorially exclusive state. "--

Abstract: This book explores the role of religion in the lives of Brazilian migrants in London and on their return 'back home'. Working with the notion of religion as lived experience, it moves beyond rigid denominational boundaries and examines how and where religion is practiced in migrants' everyday lives, This book explores the role of religion in the everyday, transnational lives of Brazilian migrants in London and on their return to Brazil. It contributes to an emerging body of work that recognizes the importance of religion within transnational processes and foregrounds the experiences of Brazilians in London, a growing yet still largely invisible new migrant group in London. It works with the notion of religion as lived experience to give due weight to the perspectives of migrants themselves and examines the ways in which migrants negotiate their religious beliefs and practices in different places and create new connections between them. While focusing on the experience of Brazilian migrants - both in London and on their return - as a case study, it provides significant empirical and conceptual contributions to existing research through its innovative exploration of the interconnections between migration and religion, and moreover, through its inclusion of the return setting into its field of enquiry. Both these areas - religion and return - have been hitherto largely neglected within existing migration research

Abstract: "Building on recent developments in social ecology, this book advances a new critical theory of society and nature, exploring social metabolism and global resource flows in contemporary society. Charting the historical development of social ecology in the context of environmental research, the book examines the interactions between society and nature and identifies both the barriers to global sustainability and the conditions and best practice for transforming industrial economies towards new sustainable resource use"--

Abstract: "This book examines the development of feminist identities among women active in revolutionary movements and how this identity simultaneously contributes to and conflicts with the struggle for women's emancipation. It is based on groundbreaking interviews with women who were active in the contemporary Irish republican movement and activists in the broader women's movement. The book explores how and why women became active in the armed Irish republican movement including an intricate examination of their roles within the IRA. It documents how the gendered experiences of the conflict and of participation in republicanism fostered feminism in many women and how this newfound republican feminism was positioned relative to the broader women's movement in the Northern Ireland. This comparison raises significant questions regarding the limitations of autonomous women's organising and its ability to be inclusive. "--

Abstract: "What does post-national identity mean for the control of migration? Katherine Tonkiss engages with the post-national theory of 'constitutional patriotism' and argues in favour of both post-national identity and relaxed migration controls. She explores the implications of such liberalised migration for the dynamics of identity and belonging in local communities, drawing on qualitative research on Eastern European migration to the UK. Illustrated with rich case study material, this book offers a novel contribution to the post-nationalism literature"--

Abstract: Exploring the growing global trend of solo living, this highly original study addresses core debates about contemporary social change in the context of globalization, including individualization and connection, the future of family formation, consumption and identities, belonging and 'community', living arrangements and sustainability, In Northern Europe almost half of households consist of one person. Rates of living alone are lower in the Global South but the trend is still on the increase. Prevalent first among the elderly, living alone then becomes common at ages associated with partners and children. Fears about the end of family and community combine with stereotypes, the 'sad and lonely' or 'selfish singles', in popular depictions. This groundbreaking and highly original study brings evidence to the core debates about contemporary social change in the context of globalization, exploring individualization and social connection, the future of family formation, consumption and identities, the relevance of place - rural or urban - in mobile worlds, sexuality, belonging and 'community', living arrangements and sustainability. This book presents a systematic sociological analysis of the growing trend of solo living across the globe, while also drawing on the voices of working-age men and women living in urban and rural areas in the UK

Abstract: "As the Asia-Pacific region develops in economic strength and influence in the twenty-first century, a deeper understanding of the differences and commonalities among the countries of this region is needed. Australia and Malaysia share the Asia-Pacific region with powerful neighbours such as China and Indonesia, as well as small fledgling democracies such as Timor Leste. This timely volume compares these two societies on key issues and tensions relating to globalization and social transformation, including foreign policy and national security; multiculturalism and citizenship; the middle class; global governance; migrants, human rights and international students. The contributors explore the contested and lively debates that emerge through the expanded mobility of ideas and people in this so-called 'Asian Century'"--

Abstract: Electronic book text. - Epublication based on: 9781137276070
Abstract: This collection explores how the dominant risk agenda is being embedded across welfare policy and practice contexts in order to redefine social problems and those who experience them. Identities of 'risky' or 'safe', 'responsible' or 'irresponsible' are being increasingly applied, not only to everyday life but also to professional practice, In this cutting edge collection authors examine risk thinking in a range of policy and practice contexts, including special needs education, digital exclusion, domestic violence and abuse, child protection and youth work. Four key interlinking themes emerge from the chapters. The first is how, within a neoliberal context, risk agendas can be used to justify and normalise the rationing and targeting of services. The second theme shows how the use of such agendas can in themselves redefine what is constituted as social problems, and how they are understood and responded to. Thirdly, welfare practice itself is being re-structured and re-theorised to adapt and conform to the new definitions and understandings that risk thinking has brought about. Finally, the fourth theme is how the use of risk as a negative organising discourse is not inevitable but, in different contexts, can create positive outcomes for service users, practitioners and society

Note: Includes bibliographical references and index , "In an era that plays host to war, terrorism, civil unrest, and economic uncertainty, it is more vital than ever to think critically about the ways in which violence is framed, mediated and regulated through representations. This book explores the variegated forms violence can take, not only physical but abstract, emotional and virtual, and directed not only against bodies but buildings, faiths, cultures, and classes. With essays by experts in literature, film, drama, art, and philosophy, Violence and the Limits of Representation contributes to a richer understanding of violence and its effects. This collection not only offers insight into the challenges and ethical issues involved in the representation of violence but, through a concern with the socio-political contexts of violence, offers a unique set of perspectives on the conflicts and concerns of the present. Abstract: This book examines the relationship of belonging and social policy in a historical-comparative perspective reconstructing individual arguments in favour of or opposed to the expansion of solidarities, Belonging, Solidarity and Expansion in Social Policy examines processes of social policy formation and shifting solidarities from the perspective of the actors most affected. Using the examples of nineteenth century mutual benefit societies in the UK and Germany, and EU level social policy, it shows empirically how actors are able to shift their solidarities towards strangers and reveals the argumentative patters concerning such a transformation. The book's innovative research programme provides theoretical and empirical insights on the question regarding the relationship of belonging and social policy. It offers a new theory on the formation of redistributive preferences based on an approach combining theories of solidarity and structural incentives. The analysis shows how these preferences are shaped by available institutional alternatives, cost-benefit-calculations and identity-oriented interests, and thus offers new empirical evidence on how individuals are able to reintegrate wider identities and align their solidarities also at the European level

Abstract: The analysis of social distinction cannot indefinitely remain confined to logics of reasoning that are markedly ethnocentric. Rather than just applying the consecrated schemes of Veblen or Bourdieu, Daloz provides new foundations in this book for understanding 21st Century Dubai, China, Russia and settings of the past, The analysis of social distinction cannot indefinitely remain confined to logics of reasoning that are markedly ethnocentric. To understand many manifestations, past and present, of superiority, we need to do more than just apply the allegedly ubiquitous schemes of Veblen or Bourdieu. The time for abstract universalising grand theories is over. What is required instead is an inductive approach which starts from the realities of an ever more global field and aims at developing models of interpretation that are sensitive to the whole array of observable attitudes. This book, which is a follow up to the critical enterprise initiated in The Sociology of Elite Distinction, provides new foundations for the comparative study of this important subject. It is a must-read for social scientists and beyond
Abstract: "An analytically brilliant, powerfully sustained exercise in comparative theorizing at the middle range. Daloz pushes the analysis of status distinction to a level it has never before achieved. Rethinking Social Distinction bristles with empirical insight and theoretical sophistication." - Jeffrey C. Alexander, Lillian Chavenson Saden Professor of Sociology, Yale University, US "By employing the inductive method, and through the judicious use of a wide-ranging number of examples, Professor Daloz explores all aspects of the phenomena of social distinction, without however falling into either the trap of ethnocentricism or reductionism. Indeed his careful and nuanced comparative approach to the study of distinction is an excellent antidote to the all-too-common universalistic models current in the field, and should be compulsory reading for anyone interested in the topic." - Colin Campbell, Emeritus Professor of Sociology, University of York, UK "Dealing with a quasi-universal topic, Daloz brilliantly uses comparatism across time and space, and across disciplinary and theoretical traditions. His remarkably informed analysis demonstrates how rigorous qualitative sociology can be. This is a most welcome contribution to those pioneering developments in some quarters of the French social sciences fortunately moving away from the normative perspectives of the previous decades."- Nathalie Heinich, CNRS Research Professor, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris, France

Unlike other books, which focus on a particular sector or offer a guide to teaching for particular exam specifications, this book seeks to widen the debate and offers perspectives on where media education has been and where it might be going. Note: "Much has been written about theatre's capacity to create social change. Theatre of Good Intentions: Challenges and Hopes for Theatre and Social Change, however, looks at some of the reasons why achieving such goals is hard; examining what theatre can and can't do. It critiques the limitations of theatre in the creation of social change, in order to engage in a productive discussion of theatre's strengths - and weaknesses - and theatre artists' opportunities to make change in an unjust world. This book focuses on theatre's impact on both participants and spectators, examining a wide range of contemporary applied and political theatre case studies, engaging with some of the most common forms of theatre used towards the goals of social change, including Theatre of the Oppressed, professional political theatre in performance, community-based theatre, prison theatre, and classroom drama. Theatre of Good Intentions constructs an argument advocating for artists and students to think strategically about the limitations and opportunities of theatre as a medium of social change"-- Provided by publisher. , Includes bibliographical references and index
