Abstract: In the garden of the world. Italy to a young 19th century Chinese traveler. On September 14th, 1859, at the first light of dawn, a young Chinese traveler named Guo Liancheng 郭連城 (1839-1866) landed in Civitavecchia, Italy, after a long journey of overland travel and months of navigation. Coming from a small village far from the capital, he was only 20 years old and was in the company of an Italian priest, Luigi Celestino Spelta. Guo was not the first Chinese man to visit Europe but before leaving, he decided to keep a daily journal of his experience, published soon after his return with the title of Xiyou bilüe西游筆略 (Brief Account of the Journey to the West). This book presents for the first time the story of Guo Liancheng, exploring a still little-known aspect of the history of the contacts between Italy and China. Following the pages of Guo Liancheng's journal, the author tries to shed light on its contents and features and to analyze the image of Italy described in the pages of Brief account of the Journey to the West, the earliest firsthand account on the Bel Paese ever published in China

Abstract: In this contribution, the financial and planning instruments that can promote the development of a Community-based cooperative are analysed. In particular, EU cohesion policy and rural development programs are considered. A focus is then made on the so-called InvestEU Fund, and another in-depth look is given to Smart Villages, which are defined as communities in inner areas using innovative solutions to improve their resilience, building on local strengths and opportunities: a very well suited definition to the potential role of Community-based cooperatives

Abstract: The purpose of this chapter is to describe and reflect on scholarly-based practices that can help facilitate comparative group work within the international and transnational context of adult education. The first section of this chapter situates comparative group work within the larger context of comparative adult education, followed by a focus on how to facilitate a group of diverse learners with different societal and cultural experiences. The chapter emphasiszes an outcome-based approach, describing how to set up incremental learning outcomes to enable comparative group work to be successful; a team-based approach, elaborating on coaching strategies to facilitate comparative work group; and a strength-based approach about adult learner-centered strategies for engagement, empowerment, mentoring, collaboration, fun, and accountability when facilitating comparative group work

Abstract: This paper provides a guide for developing a research design for comparative studies in adult and continuing education. To that end, a research methodology will be presented that was developed at the COMPALL and INTALL Winter Schools on Comparative Studies in Adult Education and Lifelong Learning. Central elements for systematic comparisons in adult and continuing education are (1) the object of comparison, (2) research fields for comparison, and (3) inductive comparative categories. These elements form the reference points for the development of a comparative research question in adult and continuing education. The comparative analysis proposes a three-step approach from juxtaposition to interpretation: step 1 - descriptive juxtaposition; step 2 - analytical juxtaposition; and step 3 - analytical interpretation

Abstract: The article investigates the relationship between Boccaccio's Genealogie and the exegesis of Ovid's Metamorphoses. For each character included in his genealogy, Boccaccio reports first of all the contents of the myth related to it and then the different literal and allegorical interpretations. The main sources are, besides Ovid, Paolo da Perugia and a mysterious Theodontius, who can be identified with a commentary on the Metamorphoses produced in the 11th or 12th century. The article aims to demonstrate that Boccaccio follows the method used by medieval exegetes of the Metamorphoses: rejecting the pagan contents of the myth, the commentators offered an allegorical and moralising interpretation, in fact rewriting the Metamorphoses as a 'medieval' work

Abstract: This essay aims to examine the philosophic sources behind the representation of passions in Boccaccio's tale of the scholar and the widow (Decameron VIII 7). If the definition of anger is attributable to Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, I believe that it is possible to assume that the description of compassion, only mentioned in the moral treatise, derives instead from the Aristotle's Rhetoric, where compassion is seen as a passion opposed to a kind of wrath, that is, indignation. The paper also investigates Boccaccio's reception of the Latin translation of Aristotle' Rhetoric. Did Boccaccio have direct knowledge of the Aristotelian text? Or had it been mediated to him by Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologiae?

Abstract: This survey concerns the lexicographic presence of Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron in the Vocabolario of the Accademici della Crusca (from the first to the fourth edition). Boccaccio is the author that counts 15.600 occurrences (considering also his others literary works) already in the first edition. This is a significant situation about Decameron, because we know that a lot of its passages went through modifications and censorship: all of these interventions on Boccaccio's text would have had some influence on the quotations into the Vocabolario. Starting from the declarations of the Accademici, the study wants to investigate about the employment of Decameron's sources during the works for the Vocabolario, involving editions, manuscripts and Accademici's autograph papers

Abstract: The aim of this essay is to analyse the story of Alatiel in its philosophical context, comparing the novella with the erotic and ethic conceptions in Middle Ages. From this point of view, it is possible to recognize two models in the story: the first is embodied by the lovers of the young woman and their savage behaviour, which seems to annihilate reason and morals, in line with the comment of Dino del Garbo to Donna me Prega. The second model is proposed by Alatiel, forced to indulge fortune's will. Around this antithesis Boccaccio develops his narrative technique, switching focalization from Alatiel to her lovers, and again to Alatiel, to debate about one of the most important themes of the whole Decameron: human action between the context created by the fortune and moral choice

Abstract: The contribution aims to illustrate the results of the research conducted on the lexicon of the Petrarch-Boccaccio magisterium relationship. The research also made use of the comparison between Boccaccio's various masters: Petrarch on the one hand, Andalò del Negro and Leonzio Pilato on the other. The results of the research have shown the substantial difference of the Petrarchian magisterium compared to that of Leonzio or Andalò. Petrarch is a supreme teacher unlike the other two, considered by Boccaccio to be technical masters. Boccaccio in fact systematically attributes to Petrarch the noun preceptor, a very generic name: he is considered not only a teacher of literature but also of life. Boccaccio also expects from him a teaching that will lead him to an ethical conversion, as evidenced by the insistent presence of the lexicon pertaining to the moral sphere attributed to him

Abstract: Giovanni Boccaccio used prologues and epilogues of his Latin works to discuss relevant topics such as the finding of reliable sources or the dissamination of the knowledge. Francesco Petrarca faced the same issues when he wrote his scholarly and historical works. This paper aims at enlightening the intertextuality between prologues and epilogues of Boccaccio's Genealogia and De montibus and the prologue of Petrarca's De viris illustribus, showing that the formers were probably inspired by the latter

Abstract: The paper pursues an investigation on an apocryphal text still underinvestigated by scholars: the Urbano, falsely attributed to Boccaccio. The first part focuses on its fortune in the Boccaccio's canon, from the first edition of the Vocabolario della Crusca to the Boccaccio's complete works edited in the Ottocento; furthermore, are pointed out its connections with the Libellus de Constantino Magno eiusque matre Helena, the main source of the plot, and with other genealogical medieval tales, such as the Libro imperiale and the Manfredo. The second part focuses on the manuscript tradition of the text, in order to demonstrate as its circulation in Quattrocento's miscellaneous manuscripts of rhetorical texts in the vernacular, containing several texts by Boccaccio, has probably influenced the spurious attribution

Abstract: The presence of the Gesuati in Chiusi, although limited in size and length of time, developed beyond all expectation. At the beginning of the seventeenth century the followers of the Blessed Colombini were called to officiate at the church of the "Madonna della Quercia al Pino" in the countryside just outside Chiusi. The friars arrived at a difficult moment after other religious orders had relinquished the post. The Gesuati did their utmost for the spiritual good of the faithful as well as the material good of the church. Unfortunately after only a few years, the Bishop of Chiusi entrusted the building to a secular priest effectively closing the little convent. The conflict which followed between the church, the diocese and the municipality only worsened the situation to the deep regret of the faithful

Abstract: The volume collects eight essays on Italian politics, economics, law and culture during Fascism. Several of the writings highlight the role played by important personalities, some attached to the regime, such as Guido Jung or Alberto Beneduce, some at the opposition, as Luigi Sturzo and Alcide De Gasperi. Other essays focus on the relationship between fascism and scholars of law as Costantino Mortati and Vezio Crisafulli, or economists such as Vilfredo Pareto and Maffeo Pantaleoni. Lastly, three writings deal, respectively, with the dissolution of the Masonic lodges in 1925, the extension of the legal institute of self defense to the protection of property, and, finally, the problems incurred by Italy between the 1920s and 1930s in repaying the debts contracted during the First World War

Abstract: Both the dredging operations and the management of dredged materials may have heavy impacts on coastal and marine ecosystems. Dredged materials, in particular, have been considered for a very long time nothing more than a waste meant for disposal. Now the time has come to move from the 'disposal approach' to the 'waste recovery' or, even better, to the 'waste can be a non-waste' ones. Unfortunately, the management of dredged materials is committed to a congeries of rules, which build up a framework of law that appears plainly fragmentary and incoherent. The road is still long (and winding)

Abstract: Grammar will be explained in this book from a new point of view: that of the speaker. He or she is the architect that makes up the sentence using tools provided by the language and with which he or she performs specific 'operations'. By using these, the speaker manages the information that he or she believes to be sharing with the listener, transmits his or her attitude towards what is being said or depicts in different ways the world that he or she wants to communicate. Henri Adamzcewski and his school have explored these tools in recent decades: here there is a brief synthesis of their work applied to Spanish

The coastline is divided in 3 sections: beaches; dunes; waterfronts. The coastline defines a territory complex, where natural and human activities intertwine shaping the places. Relationship between man and nature determines environmental criticizes increasing, requiring strategic intervention with a holistic-integrated vision. Progressive urbanization has produced stiffening of coastline and questioning of ecological cycles

Abstract: Against the backdrop of a critical reflection on the psychiatric concepts of organicism and predisposition to mental illness, the research investigates the relationship between psychiatry and the Great War from a perspective that considers the complexity of the orientations assumed by both the Italian alienists on war pathologies and the health practices implemented towards soldiers. The study highlights the comparison/clash between two totally different approaches forced to coexist during the conflict: on one side, the one from military psychiatry, and on the other the distinctive one from civil asylums. The two perspectives were not always clearly separated, but it is possible to detect a constant tension between the duties towards the war effort and the professional ethics dictated by the neuropsychiatric discipline

Abstract: In this paper, I intend to find out which texts inspired the libretto by Francesco Silvani, Il principe selvaggio (1695), whose events, according to the author, are taken "from the Fasti of Castile". The examination of the plot leads to exclude the existence of a historiographic "source" as the mention of the Fasti would suggest, and to hypothesize instead a multiple literary intertextuality. It seems that Silvani was reminiscent of theatrical texts such as El príncipe de los montes, by Juan Pérez de Montalbán, Virtudes vencen señales, by Luis Vélez de Guevara, and a constellation of works by Pedro Calderón de la Barca (El monstruo de los jardines, La hija del aire, Hado y divisa de Leonido y de Marfisa)

Abstract: Capitalism, in order to reproduce itself, must allocate more and more resources to the enhancement of the wealth already produced, rather than to increasing productive investments. The strategies for absorbing the surplus range from the reduction of supply to the creation of waste, from public spending to financialization. With the prevalence of these strategies, capitalism renounces to the maximum possible economic expansion in favour of its maximum expansion on society. It is a change that has consequences for environmental issues. The model of pure capitalism, in which the entire surplus is directed towards growth, is ecologically unsustainable. In today's historical capitalism, the goal of economic growth remains important, but it falls within that of increasing social power. Whether this is good or bad news for our biosphere will be discussed in other Chapters. Here we analyze the novelty

Abstract: This book explains the nature of capitalism both as a production system and as a historical process. Capitalism has superseded the systems based on rent and privileges, has freed up enterprise, brought in competition, set merit above corporative relations and patronage; has created a steady increase in wealth. The process has generated the development of the middle classes, a critical culture civil rights and democracy. However, the pursuit of profit has always tended to op-press the weaker categories and rob the less advanced economies. These two contrary trends cannot coexist indefinitely. Today the essential clash is between welfare for all and neoliberalism, based on increasing inequalities, rising financial rents and the exploitation of workers

Abstract: During the last years of his life, Poggio Bracciolini (1380-1459), former Apostolic Secretary and Chancellor of Florence, was working on a long text that he characterized, in a letter written in 1458, as lacking a well-defined structure. This was most probably his history of the people of Florence (Historiae Florentini populi, the title given in Jacopo's dedication copy to Frederick of Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino), revised and published posthumously by Poggio's son, Jacopo Bracciolini (1442-1478). Contrary to what is often assumed, Poggio's treatise was not a continuation, nor even a complement, to Leonardo Bruni's (1370-1444) official history of Florence. It concentrates on the most recent history of Florence from the fourteenth-century conflicts between Florence and Milan through Florentine expansion in Tuscany and finally reaching the mid-fifteenth century. This article will study the genesis and fortune of the work in the context of Poggio's literary output and the manuscript evidence from the mid-fifteenth century until the first printed edition of the Latin-language text by G.B. Recanati in 1715

Abstract: Lucan was one of the most widely read and studied classical authors during the Middle Ages, a reference point for teaching, historiography and literature. The essay attempts to outline Giovanni Boccaccio's profile as a reader of Pharsalia in the different ages of his literary production and in his critical judgment, placing him in the context of fourteenth-century reception. The different ways of reading Lucan's masterpiece, from the almost literal imitation of some scenes in the Filocolo, to the punctual references to situations, images and characters in the works of maturity, testifies the inexhaustible attention of Boccaccio towards the poet of «plus quam civilia bella»

The author explains various steps of diffusion of the spirituals ideas connected to the theology of divine love, and indicates some important writers and ambients whcich had a particular relief concerning this topic. A particular interesting is reserved to a religious order called povari yesuati, that is the principal promoter of this particular devotion, especially promoted by Domenico da Monticchiello and his italian translation of an important work of Hugh of Balma, called "mistica teologia". The povari yesuati is an religious order not many known but very important in cultural and religious world of late middle age in Italy. It's also mentioned the origin of Roman sanctuary of our Lady of Divine Love, that is also at the present and many important religious sanctuary for the people of Rome

Abstract: In this article, the author analyzes how the broad theme of the reception of Humanism and Renaissance is treated in two important histories of Ukrainian literature, respectively Muza Roksolans'ka. Ukrajins'ka literatura XVI-XVIII stolit' by Valerij Ševčuk (Kyiv, "Lybid'", 2004-2005), in two volumes, and Istorija ukrajins'koji literatury in twelve volumes (2014-) published by the publishing house of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Naukova Dumka. The disappearance of Soviet ideological constraints has brought about the emergence of various aspects of this theme: the multilingualism (especially as regards literature written in Latin), the multiple identity of writers of the so-called Pohranyččja, the literature written in Latin, are just a few. However, some aspects still need to be addressed: among then the supranational approach should be adequately considered when dealing with the spread of Humanism-Renaissance

Abstract: Moving from the studies carried out by Alfredo Schiaffini and Vittore Branca on Boccaccio's reuse, in its prosaic masterpieces (the Filocolo, the Elegy of Madonna Fiammetta and the Decameron), of mediaeval rhetorical-rhythmics rules, the essay offers an analysis of cursus applied to Decameron, realized by separating the text into three parts: introductive-proemial section, narrative section and dialogue section. The rhetorical devices are more strictly employed both in the first part, when the author or the internal storytellers speak, and into speeches given by characters in the middle of the narration. This, according to the original function of Greek cursus, would suggest its use in Boccaccio's prose as a mimetic device, that replicates the oratory declamation

In particular, we focus on the arrival of Sophia Palaiologina in Moscow, on the activities of Maximus the Greek in Russia, and on the idea of Rome and Moscow in the 16th century

Abstract: After the 'March 15 incident' on Japanese Communist Party members in 1928, many activists converted in prison, and "conversion period" (tenkō jidai) appeared. The converted people (tenkōsha) then wrote notes in which they described the ideological and spiritual changes that occurred during their imprisonment. The change was prompted by the teachings of Buddhism, mainly Jōdo Shinshū, and the presence of chaplains (kyōkaishi) who mediated the teachings. The tenkōsha abandoned their faith in Marxism, returned to Japanese traditional familism, became devoted to the Emperor of Japan, and some started to practice agricultural fundamentalism. In this article, I will focus on a person named Kobayashi Morito (1902 -1984), who wrote about his own experience of conversion in Until He Left the Communist Party (1932) and also edited the notes of other conversion people and published them as Notes of a Converter (1933) and Thought and Life of the Converted(1935), and will analyze the stories of conversion experiences of various tenkōsha, reexamining how they accepted conversion, and at the same time focus on the contradictions and conflicts that occurred there

Abstract: Flanders represents a particularly interesting region for research that aims to investigate the development of socio-economic inequalities at the local and regional level. The relationship between and effects of structural socio-economic characteristics on the one hand and micro-level variations on the other hand remain unclear. The data collected by the STREAM project (streamproject.ugent.be) together with its tailored geographical information system (GIS) allow us to explore these relationships for the rural parishes of early modern Flanders. In this chapter we examine spatial patterns in poor relief and demographic behaviour and how these were interrelated

Abstract: The storytelling device introduces the search for our roots, as persons and human beings. To write an autobiography is to seek our roots not only through retrospection, interpretation, and creation but through an act of profound freedom towards ourselves. To tell our story is to put back together the pieces of our existence and, in doing so, to rebuild it. Recounting our work, at a certain point in our professional life, is like putting it back at the centre of our lives, it is like giving meaning to our actions, and starting to understand and interpret them again. This is why it is so important to recount our work, both for the narrator and the listener. From this point, we are trying to put in front of the educational perspectives the narration of the self as a central point of reflection on the knowledge, competences, and capabilities for entering into the world of work with responsibility, awareness, and a deep sense of citizenship. Following these indications, we thought that it could be a useful exercise to reflect on professionals' stories in order to look inside the self. At the same time, we trust it is very important for young adults transitioning into the world of work

Abstract: This work is part of the research carried out within the EINITE and SMITE projects for the case of Catalonia. In this chapter, firstly, a brief state of the art of research carried out in recent years on the evolution of economic inequality in the pre-industrial world is traced. Subsequently, through the previously existing literature and the study of the empirical evidence compiled for this work, the characteristics of the fiscal sources available for some Catalan localities, i.e. the books of estimes, vàlues or manifests, and the sample of localities studied in the EINITE/SMITE projects are described in detail. The second part of the work focuses on the analysis of a case study, the town of Balaguer

Abstract: This article analyses the dynamic role of Justice in Dante's Comedy. As the judge of his Otherworld, Dante establishes harsh punishments for the sinners in his Inferno. Moreover, he attacks their earthly fame in a way similar to what he experienced as an exile condemned to death by his Commune. Dante also defines the lighter penitences which torture the souls of his Purgatorio. Finally, Dante's Justice shines alive in his Paradiso, first in the sky of Mercury and then, at its apotheosis, in the sky of Jupiter, when the eagle an-wers Dante the Pilgrim's difficult questions about the salvation of pagan souls. As the eagle points out, even the blessed souls do not know the names of all the saved ones, and this remark should invite mortals to restrain from judging their peers. A similar message seems to be at the very heart of Aquinas' speech in the sky of the Sun

Abstract: In this article the author, after briefly summarizing different interpretations of the Renaissance, shortly outlines some modes that have characterized the reception and study of Humanism and the Renaissance in Slavic countries. She then illustrates the content of the essays gathered in two recent histories of Ukrainian literature , with a special focus on the novelty of their interpretative approach. The author argues the importance of abandoning the old national-driven interpretation, in favor of the adoption of an areal and supranational point of view which allows the analysis of related cultural phenomena in a wider perspective

Abstract: San Cataldo is located on the Adriatic sea about 10 km east from Lecce (Italy). Since ancient times it was a port and the remains of a Roman pier are visible: the study illustrate the evolution of its coastal landscape from historical origins until today. The port was renovated in medieval times and also between the 19th and 20th centuries with the construction of a lighthouse, a new pier and a tramway with Lecce. During the last century emerged the tourist vocation of San Cataldo with events of overbuilding characterizing the nowadays coastal landscape

Abstract: As a sign, tangible heritage is the most visible trace of the past in our daily life. In constant dialectic with the intangible heritage, it constitutes a physical presence that forces us to take concrete awareness. Knowledge of texts and stories, which for Vitruvius is the high road for the design and construction of a building, is also fundamental in the processes of deconstruction, according to the various stages and different perceptions, through ages and customs, up to retrace the process that transformed it into 'heritage'. The lexicon and the terminology of cultural heritage are in this sense the most important vector of knowledge, enhancement and dissemination. The volume seeks to bring together those who study the language of heritage, from different countries and through different methodologies, and those involved in its management, in order to offer points of view and ideas on the narration and perception of tangible and intangible heritage, in mediation across eras, cultures and identities

Secondly, it analyzes and elaborates hydrological scenarios to explore and discuss potential design strategies. Water margin continuity could be recovered through development of flooding strategies. In conclusion, form of the archipelago emerges as a specificity of the landscape unit. More than a metaphor but as a conceptual and programmatic dispositive, archipelago can inform on dynamic structure of the Bassa Friulana complex system within an ecological framework

Abstract: Among the structural elements characterizing the Alpine communities in comparison to those in the plains was the specularity of their landscapes: large collective areas (woods and pastures) and scarce space for farming; extensive and fertile land, prerogative of selected groups (noblemen, clergymen), and limited collective spaces (pastures). It is on this basis that the argument was made of the 'natural' equality of Alpine communities. Recent studies have instead demonstrated also in these contexts a polarization of land, especially where the temporary migration of men represented one of the foundations of the economy. This is applicable also to the Carnia region, in particular during the second half of the 18th century

The experience reached in Liguria by many years, leaded our activities of protection, research and valorization in order to develop a network of integrated archaeological sites and naval museums. On land this project provides two new museums in the cities of Albenga and Imperia that will be connected with a series of exhibitions and conferences

Abstract: This publication brings together the results of the project 3DPAST: Living and virtual visiting European World Heritage, co-funded by the Creative Europe EU programme. The research highlighted the exceptional character and quality of living in vernacular dwellings found in World Heritage sites. This was possible by seizing the cultural space of European vernacular heritage, located in Pico island (Portugal), Cuenca town (Spain), Pienza (Italy), Old Rauma (Finland), Transylvania (Romania), Berat & Gjirokastra (Albania), Pátmos (Greece), and Upper Svaneti (Georgia). New digital realities grant the possibility to visit and to appreciate those places, to non-travelling audiences, who lack the opportunity to experience this unique heritage in situ. Creative potential is highlighted in 3D models and digital visualisations, which associate outstanding local knowledge with the vernacular expression of World Heritage

Abstract: Both infrastructure and research, make communications and exchanges between distant places possible. As a consequence, geographic positions and administrative borders are less and less significant compared to the polarity of the individual cities. From the port and infrastructural systems' point of view, Trieste, can closely resemble this model by strengthening the two drivers for development, quality of life and employment opportunity. The specificity that needs to be investigated is the complex system that joins port logistics with innovation promoted by AREA Science Park among others

Abstract: The results of new archival research, compared with some epistles of Blessed Giovanni Colombini, allowed to frame the mystical experience of his cousin Caterina Colombini, which matured in the Sixties of the fourteenth century, in a situation of serious breakdown with his family, caused by patrimonial reasons. Caterina succeeded, also with the help of some friends of her cousin, to free herself from the family context and to constitute the first community of Gesuate, so-called because they observed the same way of life as the Gesuati, then in 1371 to equip this congregation with a residence purchased with her own money in the Sienese district of Vallepiatta and finally to submit it to the protection and jurisdiction of the female Benedictine monastery of Saints Abondio and Abondanzio near Siena. Thus a new female congregation was born, that also spread to other cities in Italy, but it did not turn into a religious order, while avoiding the accusation of heresy for "beguinage"

Abstract: Poggius Florentinus delighted in his local identity but he also, famously, had an international career, being in attendance at the Council of Constance, being resident in England for four years (1419-1422) and seeking employment at the imperial court. What is less recognized is how he sought for his literary works audiences far beyond his home-city and how some non-Italians were willingly collaborators in this creation of an international reputation. It has not been noticed before how a remarkable witness to this process is now housed in the Special Collections of Bryn Mawr. It, like other manuscripts in the library, reached its present location because of that twenty-century friend of Poggio and alumna of the college, Phyllis Goodhart Gordan. It now has the shelfmark ms. 48 and is a collection of Poggio's dialogues. What has not been recognized is that we can identify both its scribe and its illuminator and, by doing so, shed new light on Poggio's fortuna on the far side of Europe, in his one-time home of England

Abstract: The paper is devoted to the problem of imitation of maps in the late Renaissance Polish poetry (between 1580 and 1630). The author first discusses the special interest in cartography that existed among the Polish elite and poets of the period. The main thesis of the paper is that poets widely used map-based techniques in constructing their poems. Imitation (imitatio) played a crucial role in this process. To illustrate this concept, the author analyses the work of five poets: S.F. Klonowic, K. Miaskowski, S. Petrycy, M.K. Sarbiewski and Sz. Szymonowic. Looking at the shared topoi used in poems and maps and investigating how the late Renaissance poets described the territory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, allows the author to draw a similarity between controlling space in poetry and maps. This suggests the idea of ruling over space might be related to the 16th-century idea of a God-like poet

Abstract: This essay provides an outline of the familial, social, and cultural network of the Milanese Jesuati between the end of the fifteenth century and the first decades of the sixteenth century. Particular attention is given to their interactions with Cardinal Bernardino López de Carvajal, one of the protagonists of the schismatic Council of Pisa-Milan (1510-1512). Starting from the creation of their settlement of San Girolamo, new documentary evidence is employed to show how the surrounding urban area and the physical buildings that should have been erected there actually mirrored the local network of both the Jesuati and Carvajal. The patronage of the cardinal in San Girolamo and the creation of a Last Judgement fresco are then discussed and connected to the eschatological tensions stirring Milan at the time

The seminar is held annually and was born with the intent to giving voice to young scholars, who are invited to present their research, either concluded or current. The volume, alongside contributions on the Decameron, stands out for its attention towards other Latin and vulgar works by Boccaccio (Teseida, Genealogia deorum gentilium, De mulieribus claris, Epistolae) and for two contributions focused on the iconography of Decameron and Teseida

Abstract: This article examines Remigio de' Girolami's treatise De modis rerum. This metaphysical treatise addresses all aspects of this discipline, which, in the footsteps of his master Thomas Aquinas, Remigio understands as an ontology. The investigation confirms the Thomistic orientation of Remigio's philosophy but also highlights Remigio's acute perception of the complex relationships between thought, language and reality. Thus, the author argues that this treatise proposes an innovative approach to metaphysics based on the study of the meanings of key notions of the discipline

Abstract: Even today, Italians tend to adopt a double imagine of their national character, played on the contrast between an evolved and conscious minority ('us') and a backward and typically pre-modern majority ('them'). As Giulio Bollati has shown better than any other in a famous essay, this self-representation draws its origins first of all from the period between the late Enlightenment and the early Napoleonic age, in which for the first time the Peninsula was called to deal with the models imposed by the great European modernization. The paper aims to reconstruct the process that led some of the most prominent political thinkers of this years (Baretti, Verri, Gioia, Botta, Cuoco) to adopt the image mentioned above - and this privileging the approach of the constitutional history

Abstract: The volume is a commentary on Don DeLillo's hypertrophic novel Underworld (1997). Starting from the analysis of the text - which intertwines several plots, locations and point of view -, Nicola Turi retraces the entire production of the author to follow the evolution of themes (paranoia, nuclear threat, alienation, violence...) and textual strategies. At the same times he considers some widespread trends in the contemporary novel which Underworld, narrative tableau of the United States of the second twentieth century, embodies or anticipates: the resumption of the collective novel; the construction of characters drawn from reality; the continuous interaction between verbal representation and image (both static and moving)

Abstract: The transformation of the coastal landscape assumes a significant importance, as far as global changes and erosion risks are concerned. The experience at Capo Mele to stage a new approach to the beach, managed by a smart private agent, allows more readings and new possible strategic actions. The initiative promotes the beach area as an active museum, to test and monitor new mechanisms for the use, protection and narration of landscape values, in the various aspects of adaptability, socio-cultural development and enhancement of the potential of the beach as a treasure chest of biodiversity

Abstract: The presence of the theatre of the Spanish Siglo de Oro in the theatre and literary culture of Germany (or the German-speaking countries) in the 17th and 18th centuries is a multifaceted one, and was influenced by many factors. We have to take in account that in the second half of the 17th century and in a large part of the 18th century Spain had been a terra incognita for the Germanic world. This long lack of basic knowledge led to a decontextualization of the Golden Age theatre and sometimes to an unconditional enthusiasm that was not based on historical realities. The protagonists of the 'construction' of a 'Spanish national theatre' included Lessing, Herder, Goethe, the Schlegel brothers and the philosopher Schelling, the most prominent German intellectuals of the time. Within this 'construction' Lope de Vega, Rojas Zorrilla and, above all, Calderón de la Barca are the three icons that will guide both the theory and the practice of drama during the 'two most Spanish decades' of German literary history (1790-1810), even reaching - in the secularized world of the classics and the first generation of German Romantics - the 'deification' of Calderón as perfect poet and author of modern tragedies (without paying much attention to his comedias in a stricter sense and without taking account of his autos sacramentales)

Abstract: The book presents the correspondence, from the 1950s to the end of the following decade, between the Nobel Prize laureate, Giulio Natta, and a young Enzo Ferroni, who will be then one of the founders of "chemistry applied to restoration". Almost sixty years later, this research has made it possible to recover the memory of Ferroni as an avant-garde scientist also in the field of macromolecules and the possibility offered to him by Natta of a prestigious role as a researcher at his institute in Milan. The archives, even the scientific ones, can reserve surprises of this kind: they are prolific in technical data but also reveal traces of humanity. The volume also includes the joint publication of the two chemists and seven articles by Ferroni presented by Natta at the Accademia dei Lincei

Abstract: Giovanni Boccaccio is quoted several times in Castiglione's Cortegiano, but all these mentions are inserted in two specific contexts: on the one hand, the debate on literary language, developed in the letter of dedication to don Michel De Silva and in the first book; on the other hand, the definition of the joke in book II. Starting from these premises, this essay analyses the meanings of Boccaccio's presence in the Cortegiano. It shows that Castiglione's treatise provides two different and concurrent representations of the author of the Decameron: a positive one, connected to the 'questione della lingua', that offers Boccaccio as a promoter of the usage ('uso'); a critical one, deriving from the theory of the 'facezia', that makes Boccaccio a challenging and challenged model

Abstract: The article deals with the results of the analysis of the Old Russian translation of the First book of Cosmographia by Pompons Mela. Mela's Cosmographia was admired and praised by humanists. The research of the way the text was comprehended and interpreted in Muscovy demonstrates the original features of the perception of the Renaissance traditions, ideas and values by Russian intellectuals. The study reveals that the comprehension of Mela's information was characterized by traditional manner of pursuit of biblical analogy. Thus, even the close acquaintance with the Renaissance culture did not change the essence of the Russian Medieval Orthodox culture

Abstract: The volume Intorno a Boccaccio / Boccaccio e dintorni 2019 was born from the international study seminar that took place in Certaldo Alta, in the House of Giovanni Boccaccio, on 12 and 13 September 2019. The Seminar, now in its sixth edition, is proposed as one of the most solid and significant appointments in the activity of the Giovanni Boccaccio National Organization, and as one of the events that best characterizes its mission. Created to give a voice particularly to young scholars, over the years it has become an important appointment for presenting and discussing research in progress or just concluded, and always open to future developments. With this volume, which includes essays particularly focused on philological, literary, historical-linguistic and lexicographic aspects, a series led by an authoritative Scientific Committee is inaugurated

Abstract: Each one of us in his life has, at least once, smelled the scent of roses, read one canto of Dante's Commedia or listened to the sound of the sea from a shell. All of this is possible thanks to the astonishing capabilities of an organ, such as the brain, that allows us to collect and organize perceptions coming from sensory organs and to produce behavioural responses accordingly. Studying an operating brain in a non-invasive way is extremely difficult in mammals, and particularly in humans. In the last decade, a small teleost fish, zebrafish (Danio rerio), has been making its way into the field of neurosciences. The brain of a larval zebrafish is made up of 'only' 100000 neurons and it's completely transparent, making it possible to optically access it. Here, taking advantage of the best of currently available technology, we devised optical solutions to investigate the dynamics of neuronal activity throughout the entire brain of zebrafish larvae

Abstract: The recent discovery of a dome painted by Antonio Puglieschi in the Mondragone Carnesecchi palace, representing Mars and Venus surprised by Vulcan, offers the occasion to reflect on the symbols used by Francesco I de' Medici and Bianca Cappello. According to an ancient rumor, the clandestine love encounters between Francesco and Bianca had taken place in that very same palace and the depiction of the mythological infidelity may alluded to that relationship. The paper analyses different sources which show that Francesco was often portrayed as Mars and Bianca as Venus: specific attention is given to the detailed description of their wedding celebrations which revolved around the theme of the meeting and love of Venus and Mars. It's possible that the Del Vernaccia family, who owned the palace and commissioned the painting to Antonio Puglieschi, wanted to remember and somehow celebrate events that took place in those rooms more than a century before

Abstract: This study's aim is to deepen and enhance the linguistic dimension in Pier Paolo Pasolini's work, in the hope of restoring to his figure all the fullness of his intense and visceral relationship with the entire universe of languages. In the first part of the work we will investigate the various moments of Pasolini's reflection on different expressive codes, from dialect to the language of cinema, from the 'Language of Reality' to the technological neo-Italian, promptly counterposed by the author's linguistic experimentation. From here a broad lexical investigation starts - this study being the subject of the second part of this volume - with the aim of highlighting the author's contribution to contemporary Italian (as to this day many 'keywords' from Pasolini's universe still echo in Italian language, from «nuovo Potere» to «Palazzo», from «omologazione» to «mutazione antropologica»), thus confirming, once again, the inseparable relationship between reflection and language creativity, giving birth to a new, unique portrait of Pasolini as a 'linguist' and at the same time as an 'onomaturgist'

Abstract: The chapter reviews existing evidence regarding four aspects of economic inequality: relative factor rents, which relate to the factorial distribution of income and also underlie the so-called Williamson index (y/wus), which is correlated with the Gini index of household income; real inequality in terms of opposite movements of the price of consumer baskets consumed by different strata of society; the inequality of pay according to gender and skill, as well as between town and countryside; and wealth inequality, particularly with respect to the access to land. The main result is that, with given technology and agrarian institutions, there is a positive correlation between population and inequality

Abstract: Using the metaphor of the city-text, the volume investigates in a comparative perspective the representations of Istanbul in the works of two pairs of authors: Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar/Orhan Pamuk and Yaşar Kemal/Latife Tekin. The notions of memory and language provide the main hermeneutical cyphers in the analysis of each urban poetics, considered respectively as attempts of (re)writing and translation of mnesic and cultural text of the city in the literary space of high national culture. Moving from the centre to periphery, such an itinerary aims to highlight the intimate relationship between forms of aesthetical appropriation of urban space-time and (de)construction processes of Turkish national canon

Abstract: Building on recent scholarship, this article sketches the development of the Florentine studium of Santa Maria Novella in the thirteenth century, before it became a studium generale between 1305 and 1311. The catalogue of Santa Maria Novella's library and the information regarding works which were conceived there are collected and analysed to outline the core of the ancient library. The first quire of the manuscript Florence, Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale, Conv. soppr. G 3.451 (cc. 1-8) constitutes a notable case study for the learning interests of Dominican friars. Finally, this article discusses the controversial letter written by Nicholas Trevet to the dedicatee of his commentary on Boethius' Consolatio Philosophiae and re-assesses its disputed connec- tion with the Florentine environment

Abstract: Coastal zones are subjected to human pressure and it is necessary to protect and manage these productive and sensitive ecosystems. Artificial Reefs (AR) are relevant tools to overcome these challenges. For nearly a decade they have been used in ecological engineering in order to restore specific habitat functionalities. In the meantime, they are also employed to manage human activities. The review of the latest projects on the French Mediterranean coast shows that apart from the ecological objectives, AR are also social tools that could help to enlarge an integrated approach of an ecosystem

Abstract: Seeking out rare and precious texts, or book hunting, was a favorite pursuit of the Renaissance humanists, but the activity had been practiced with enthusiasm (and often guile) since antiquity. This paper discusses the phenomenon over time, looking at representative book hunters from Aulus Gellius (second century CE) to Poggio Bracciolini (1380-1459), who was probably the most famous book hunter of them all. I will consider the discoveries of Catullus, Cicero's Letters to Atticus, and Apuleius as well as several of the most famous finds of Poggio himself, emhasizing in each case the circumstances and method of discovery, the importance of the find, and the fate of the discovered book. The paper will close with a brief epilogue on some modern book hunters

Abstract: The surge in public debt during the recent pandemic crisis has made high debt a prominent policy issue. Italy is an interesting case study since it has experienced high levels of debt for a significant part of its history. This article revisits the history of Italian public debts in the inter-war period. Italy emerged from WWI with public debt that peaked around 160 percent of GDP. In the mid-1920s a significant reduction of public debt occurred, in concomitance with a regime of fiscal austerity and two restructuring agreements that wiped more than 80 percent of Italian foreign debts. By the early 1930s, the US reaction to the Great Depression that opposed any form of international cooperation, led to an Italian default on war debts in 1934 and a move toward autarky

Abstract: After years of indiscriminate exploitation, the Anthropocene period is giving us back a nature whose reactions make the Earth less and less habitable: reversing the route has now become a urgent priority. The paradigm of ecosystem services is moving a step in the right direction in considering the multiplicity of benefits offered to mankind by the environment, but lends itself to quantitative drifts that risk extending commodification to the world of nature. This book investigates the consistency and usefulness for the sciences of the territory of the paradigm of ecosystem services from multiple disciplinary horizons, advancing the proposal to bring it back within a bioregional approach, with the introduction of the concept of eco-territorial services

Abstract: Plants-Nations have very different characters in different countries or in different ages in the same country; like wines, in every terroir they have a particular taste and always preserve it, though some years are better than others. Everything depends upon the air and its qualities. It is a home air, but it is not always the same. National characters are the product of a (changeable) balance between identity and diversity, permanent general elements and variations in time. Jean-Baptiste Du Bos' Réflexions critiques sur la poésie et sur la peinture, first published in 1719, attempt to keep this balance and present themselves as an indispensable reading for those who want to discuss national characters and their causes even in 1748, when Montesquieu published the Esprit des lois and Hume Of National Characters

Abstract: Bracciolini's contribution to visual materiality, graphical innovation, and the book trade is the driving force in the development of a new philological turn. This essay explores the textual consciousness that marked the passage to scrupulous criteria of editing and writing, which ultimately indicates and emphasizes the historical dimension of hermeneutical tradition. With a powerful impact on readership and authorship, Bracciolini stands behind this groundbreaking entanglement, as we rethink textual transmission and modern scholarship in this digital age

Abstract: The article deals with the national character in Jules Michelet. Michelet supports an essentialist version of the character. According him, it is caused by natural elements: geography, food and the various regions that make up France. These elements are spiritualized over time: it is the history that gave rise to the character of the French. The result is the complete fusion of all differences in a nation-individual: a generous person towards humanity. The French character is contrasted with the English character: selfish, greedy, all devoted to work and earnings. It is precisely because of their different characters that France has given the world the Revolution and England the Industrial Revolution, a phenomenon that mechanizes work, that destroys the body and soul of the workers

Abstract: This article presents the critical editions of two texts: a letter by the Duke of Milan Filippo Maria Visconti (but written on his behalf by Pier Candido Decembrio) sent to Poggio Bracciolini on 28 July 1438; and the response written by Poggio on 15 September. Poggio's letter contains a brief treatise in praise of Florence and of the Florentina libertas. The documents illuminate a crucial episode in the history of Italian Humanism. The article opens with the discussion of these two letters in their wider historical and intellectual context: on the one hand, the characteristically Florentine «civic humanism» which constitutes the background of Poggio's positions; on the other, the political and cultural competition between Florence and Milan during the first half of the 15th century

Abstract: Although the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) revised their theoretical model of food security for over two decades ago, historians have been slow in adopting these new insights to study pre-modern societies. Showcasing the potential of the holistic approach proposed by the FAO, this paper analyses the evolution of food security in the calamitous fourteenth century in Ghent, one the most populated cities at that time. In the long-term, access to food seem to have bettered during the second half of the century thanks to increased wages, wealth and investments into farmland. While these gains can partly be linked to demographic evolutions, we found no evidence of an often-hypothesized Malthusian ceiling before the Black Death

Abstract: This paper offers an overall study of the texts derived from the Spanish classical theater contained in the Orsi collection of the Estense Library of Modena, which has so far not been adequately investigated. The remarkable interest of Giovan Gioseffo Orsi (1652-1733) and his entourage for the Spanish theater emerged, played in the public theaters, private villas, academies and Jesuit colleges of Modena and Bologna between the end of the XVII and the beginning of the XVIII century. In addition, several unknown adaptations and remakes come to light, deriving from Spanish pièces included in the Diferentes autores collection - which had a considerable European circulation -, and some canovacci, long considered lost, dating back to the companies of the professional comedians Giovanni Andrea Cavazzoni and Luigi Riccoboni. The analysis conducted on some of these texts, of which there are multiple versions, allows us to go into the translator's laboratory, greatly increasing our knowledge of the theatrical rewriting methods of the time

Abstract: This paper highlights archival evidence and dramaturgic mythemes in order to reconsider the historiographical issues related to the XVIIth-century theatrical reception of El burlador de Sevilla y convidado de piedra outside of Spain. Among the crossroads of theatrical practices alive in XVIIth-century Naples, Don Juan underwent a rapid process of assimilation and transformation. The chronology of its Neapolitan debut at the Teatro di San Bartolomeo is re-examined in this paper, while unfolding some new and possible scenarios interweaving history and dramaturgy, the stage and the historical political events of the Kingdom of Naples during the first decades of the XVIIth century. This study examines the Mediterranean basis consolidating the myth of Don Juan - the character with «feet made of wind» (Garboli) - and defining its dramaturgic status all around Europe

Abstract: The "FLEX 2018" cruise, organized by the CNR-ISMAR in frame of the ESA "FLEXSense Campaign 2018" and CMEMS project, provided a ground station for several bio-optical instruments that investigated the coastal waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea in June 2018. The field measurements were performed in time synergy with Sentinel 3A and Sentinel 3B satellites and HyPlant airborne imaging spectrometer. Active and passive fluorescence were investigated at different scales in coastal waters to support preparatory activities of the FLuorescence EXplorer (FLEX) satellite mission

Abstract: The study deals with the influence of the classical tradition on Czech literature of the Early Modern Period (Renaissance, Baroque). The article demonstrates this influence through examples of the use of selected motifs from ancient history in all of the main genres of the literature of that era: homily, legend, school drama, poetry and educational literature. The study also analyses the educational background of the authors and readers of the era and their attitude to ancient history; the ways of mediation and making use of ancient motifs in the literature; and the influence of ancient historiography on Renaissance and Baroque culture and interpretation of history

Abstract: Creatine (Cr) transporter deficiency (CCDS1) is a very rare and severe condition due to impaired energetic metabolism. In this work we showed for the first time the following facts: this diseases is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder in which a set of maladaptive compensatory mechanisms leads to a progressive damage of brain functions; cell energy metabolism and mitochondria seem strongly involved in the pathogenesis and they could represent useful potential targets for therapeutic interventions; inflammation seems to play an important part in this progressive damage, and this observation can pave the way to treatment strategies; neural circuits disruption involving inhibitory systems could give a huge contribute to many of the clinical aspects observed in patients, as epilepsy and cognitive impairment, since the excitatory/inhibitory balance is fundamental for the normal function of neural circuits. Factors outside the CNS are important in the pathogenesis of at least some aspects of the disorder, since the conditional KO model show difference in the timing of onset of some cognitive defects and in the presence of stereotypies

Abstract: The thesis examines the dialectic between fact and law in the juridical experience of Rome in the light of the principle of appearance of law. For each of the main manifestations of the principle of appearance (apparent heir, apparent creditor, apparent representative) a possible historical antecedent in Roman law (possessor pro herede, falsus creditor, falsus procurator) is identified, a detailed analysis of which is proposed, taking into account ancient sources and doctrinal interpretations. Subsequently the 'de facto' family relationships (more uxorio relations, matrimonium iniustum and concubinage) are examined, since they can in turn be traced back to the principle of appearance. In its questioning of the reasons of the extension of the juridical discipline to the apparent case, the research identifies a common tendency to the various phenomena that, although heterogeneous, express the same tension between fact and law present in the legal systems of every historical epoch

Abstract: Between 1290 and 1310, two Mendicant friars active in Florence dealt with the controversial issue of usury: the Franciscan lector Peter of Trabibus, who until now has been studied primarily for his relationship to Olivi's teaching, and the Dominican Remigio de' Girolami. In the mid-nineties of the thirteenth century, in the context of his quodlibetal questions, Peter of Trabibus discusses the social role of merchants and he broaches the question of the restitution of usurious gains. Some years later, Remigio also deals with similar issues in his quodlibetal questions and writes a treatise that bears the title De peccato usurae

Abstract: At the turn of the fourteenth century (1295-1301), the Florentine Dominican Remigio de' Girolami produced a collection of essential texts connected to events in Florentine politics that present the testimony of a well-informed intellectual directly involved in the Communal crises. This article proposes to analyze, as a case study, the influence of Remigio's five sermons on Florentine communal life. His preaching in reaction to the crises shaking Florence happened in dialogue with the institutions and citizens of the Commune. It bears witness to the interactions between Santa Maria Novella and the city of Florence and contributes to the development of the political philosophy of its time

Abstract: The innovative proposal is to substitute traditional nourishment and rockfill breakwaters with total submersion energized reef turbines, so as to favor: cost of the maintenance, re-growth of the marine grasslands, sea depollution and landscape retraining. The rise in the beach level and limitation of coastal erosion, consequent deposition of suspended sand for natural nourishment, represents the principal economic benefit. Soft defense of the coasts, in calm inshore belt, mimics coral reefs and floating spinning helix, in an indifferent equilibrium in the water, turns by minimum currents

Abstract: The essay analyses the principle of mutual recognition as a legal technique of coordination of the Member States' legal systems. We examine its ability of ensuring effectiveness of the individual's fundamental rights and of favouring the European integration. The study of the principle is both static and dynamic. From a static standpoint, the analysis attempts to delineate the anatomy of mutual recognition, identifying its legal nature, its distinctive features in each of the three areas of its implementation (internal market, judicial cooperation in civil and criminal matters) and the variable geometry that characterises its application. From a dynamic point of view, the research examines the principle of mutual recognition as a technique for coordinating the legal systems of the Member States, in both its horizontal and vertical dimension

Abstract: Erosive coastal cliffs formed in soft-rocks sediments along the generally carbonaceous Eastern Adriatic are a rare feature. The one from the Vrgada Island gave rise to the idea that local seabed surface sediment may reflect the composition of the cliff sediment. First results of sedimentological analyses showed that sediment samples collected on both sides of the cliff contain material eroded mostly from the eastern side of the cliff. Subsequent longshore drift caused by dominant waves likely sort fallen material, transporting its finer fractions to the northern side and further into the sea

Abstract: Composed between 1448 and 1449, the Vita del beato Giovanni Colombini by Feo Belcari was printed for the first time in 1477 and was destined to growing publishing success over the following centuries both as an independent text and in miscellany dedicated to the blessed. It will be the third edition of the Accademia della Crusca Vocabolario, published in 1691, to increase its affirmation by admitting the entire poetic and prose work of Belcari among the privileged references for the Tuscan vernacular and the Italian language. A recognition that will lead to a Veronese edition of the work in 1817, edited by authoritative scholars of Italian humanistic literature, which will condition many reprints of the work during the first half of the nineteenth century and which will persist even later, when it will be included in series very different, between religious and linguistic / literary interests
